The food at the Blue Gibbon is consistent and reliable-GOOD. the management is accommodating and ever present to watch over diners and staff. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that most recent visit  was marred by a server who seemed to be overwhelmed by crowd (it was busy, but he could have smiled).  Surely wont keep me from returning, though.

The pork Pad Thai was delicious.  Will return for sure.

For the price and location (it's near where I work), I don't complain about going there to eat if others want to go. However, this place is not particularly a location where I would recommend going. It sadly doesn't even satisfy my American-Chinese food cravings.

On the plus side, the inside is clean, spacious, and can easily accommodate a sizable group of you and your friends. The staff is friendly and the food comes out quickly if you're in a time crunch!

Overall, it's not terrible, but definitely is the generic Americanized Chinese food that still is on the mediocre level of the scale.

A Doctor I had the pleasure of working with took me here. This place has been open for 36 years, same location. Beyond longevity, the service is as amazing as the meals presented to you. Definitely have the steak, I prefer medium, the flavor is beyond good.
Good prices and great choices on the menu.

In San Diego I was spoiled by a wealth of delicious and authentic asian food. Much to my surprise I was impressed by Blue Gibbon. I recommend ordering dinner-sized portions for family-style sharing off the specials board up front. Those are the tastier dishes unlike the boring sweet and sour chicken (bleh!). The owner gave us a tip: order the beef ha fun (thick rice noodles). Also try the Szechuan asparagus with shrimp or chicken.  You can't go wrong!

I'm confused by all the other Yelp reviewers because I had a great experience and will definitely go back. FYI: most authentic asian restaurants don't focus on service because their food speaks for itself.

I tried it tonight based upon prior reviews:  uninspired, but generous portion satisfied what I wanted on a drive home.  The lightly steamed vegetables, in my opinion, were spot on.

Cons, I arrived about 20 minutes after placing my order, and it was not ready (read:  they hadn't started it yet in case I was a no-show).  Secondly, at ten dollars for supper, I could get better quality elsewhere without much effort.

I'd like to try a second time with something other than the american menu.

Have been an occasional, long-time customer because the food is okay. But last night my husband found hair in his takeout food, removed it, ate the food anyway (ick), and suffered a lot of intestinal distress all night afterwards. A double-whammy of bad experience; we won't be back.

The blue gibbon is a generic american chinese food restaurant. No frills and inexpensive. As a foodie I would never come here for dinner but lunch is am entirely different sorry. The venue is huge so it is perfect for large groups. The lunch specials are large and include both soup and fried rice with your entree...and they are cheap. My meal was $5 for lunch.

The thing about Blue Gibbon is that it looks like it might be kind of a hot spot, but really, it's not.  The owners have actually spent some time and money on remodeling the outside, and that does even more to make you think you're in for some fancy shmancy (American) Chinese food, but no.  Don't get me wrong-- Blue Gibbon is fine when you want cheap, filling Chinese.  Just don't expect bells and/or whistles.

That being said, I've lunched with Blue Gibbon on several occasions.  It's close to where I work and the lunch specials are a superb value.  For around six bucks, you get a soup and a generous entree portion served with plain fried rice.  I never leave hungry.  The service is quick, albeit not the most friendly, but we usually do a call in and carryout order, so I get to avoid this most times.

I don't know if things at the Blue Gibbon are different during the dinner hours, but I like Blue Gibbon for lunch, and I look forward to lunching with them again.

From the outside, Blue Gibbon looks like a place that was once a jumping spot to eat but has since fallen on hard times. Inside, it's all cold tile floors, cafeteria walls and surly wait staff.

I can overlook that stuff, especially for an old-school Americanized Chinese joint. But our pork dumplings and hot and sour soup were generic as they come. My kung pao chicken came out barely lukewarm with a syrupy sauce and a strangely bland aftertaste. I declined to take the leftovers home, which for me is pretty rare.

My wife's General Tsao's was decent, but not good enough for us to consider going back.

I have been to the Blue Gibbon on multiple occasions. This Chinese restaurant is an ideal lunch spot. Not only is the service and food spot on but the price is very reasonable. I have tried a variety of dishes and never been disappointed. The food always comes from the kitchen in a short period of time. This actually makes it possible to have the 30 minute lunch.

Sadly, I do miss the nugget ice machine which has been recently replaced with a newer cube machine.  Besides that, I can't complain with anything about the Blue Gibbon.

Note:  I have several coworkers who swear by the hamburger on the menu. They state it's got a great taste and reasonable price.  I personally haven't tried as I am too focused on the Chinese items.

I found Blue Gibbon through Yelp. I was looking for a close yummy takeout joint. I was sorely disappointed by what I got. I ordered the pan-fried dumplings & the sesame chicken. The dumplings were doughy & had next to no flavor. The sesame chicken (while it smelled delicious) had been fried to death. It was hard to cut & the breading kept falling off. The sauce was gooey-thick & strangely spicey while tasting very little of sesame. I was glad to see my order came with a side of steamed veggies but when I put my fork in a piece of broccoli i could see it was still hard. Overall not a good experience.

One of those cincinnati lifers told me one day that Blue Gibbon was just the bees knees some unspecified amount of time in the past. I'm not sure what happened, but I think its fallen to, oh i don't know, the bees ankles?

Actually, how does the 'bee body part' ranking system work anyway?

You know I guess that's not important.

So eating in is kind of strange. The decor looks like they were either going to go lunch-time fast food, or classy dine-in evening, but couldn't make up their mind. So there are some softer furnishings and occasional drapes, but also bright lighting and sterile-white floors (not that sterility is a bad thing at a restaurant, you just don't want it to 'feel' that way).

The servers and cashiers have never really blown me away with their kindness. No glowing warmth, but also no coldness, just to the point.

The food is really pretty meh. I'm really not a picky eater, so i'll plow through a plate here without much complaint, but i'm not really excited about it. Honestly. It's not terrible. Not at all. Really.

I come here about once or twice a month for lunch. But I come here because it's less than $5 for a plate, it's fast, and I never leave hungry. I want to give it three stars because its really not terrible, but yet those little 'meh i've experienced better' words are staring back at me as truth.

Reasonably authentic Chinese cuisine if you ask for it in Chinese; would imagine it's not much less authentic otherwise. Loved the large portions and the fact that they didn't skimp on the meat in my noodle dish (a wide rice-noodle thing stir fried with beef). Dish was slightly over-salted, but it was probably the best Chinese I've had in Cincinnati. Service (on a Thursday night) was fast. Would definitely go back.

The food was well above average.  But the character of our server was beyond compare.  A rare treat to have been attended by this elderly gentlemen who held a delightful balance of both crass and charm.   I left well fed with a smile on my face as if I had spent time with an old friend.  Your next fortune surely awaits at this fine establishment

I ate here for Chinese New Year 2011.  The place was empty except for a few late-evening eaters.  The service was straightforward and satisfactory--no frilly friendliness but efficient.

The hot tea wasn't great to begin--it might have been Lipton's.  But the Egg Drop Soup and Egg Roll were great.  I had the Shrimp with Lobster Sauce.  It didn't match the description on the menu; it was soupy and didn't have pork.  But it was tasty and very filling.

My boyfriend ordered from the Cantonese menu and his entree was delicious.  Thick egg noodles were accompanied by tender beef.

Try this place--the atmosphere is nice and the food is good.

I don't love Chinese (American) food, but do I like quick cheap lunch. Blue Gibbon is just that. Lunch specials are in the $6 range for soup, rice & entree item which is simply amazing. Service is quick and friendly.

BG is a family run business and I always enjoy that. The menu has a pretty strong variety. but in the end, it's pretty standard American Chinese.

Two dining rooms are quite spacious. I've never had to wait for seating. Larger groups can be accommodated, as well. They have a liquor license, as well.

Take out is pretty good. Call and in 10 minutes, your bag of $6 lunch is ready to go.

There is better Chinese food in Cincinnati, but their might not be better value. If a quick and cheap lunch is your goal somewhere around Xavier, Blue Gibbon is a solid choice.

I found my way to Blue Gibbon after a search for restaurants open on Christmas evening.  I started out with their signature drink, The Blue Gibbon.  It was a fruity blue concoction that packed quite a punch.  The food itself was sort of your standard Americanized Chinese fare.  I don't know that I'd drive out of my way from Northern Kentucky to eat there again, but it hit the spot on a cold Christmas evening.

This place is near my mom's, and we usually go here when we are visiting from LA. We recently had a family dinner here for my son's first birthday, and it could not have been better. They gave us a big round table in the corner and made us feel welcome for the 2.5 hours we were there. They refrigerated our cake while we ate, provided plates and a knife, and did not even charge us for it (restaurants in LA charge $3 a plate for that service). Everyone enjoyed their food very much, including the egg foo yung, the singapore noodles, the fried bean curd, some sort of roasted chicken, and even my nephew's gigantic double cheeseburger. We have also eaten here or gotten takeout on Christmas and it is a great option. Sure, there is more "authentic" Chinese food out in LA, but if you want some good comfort food with fresh ingredients and very friendly service, I highly recommend it.

I completely agree with Katy - it's mediocre - all around. The place isn't the cleanest, the staff isn't that friendly or attentive and the food is mediocre at best. If I want Chinese - I'd rather have the buffet in Pleasant Ridge and if I want Oriental food - I'd rather have RuThai's in Mt. Lookout...

I eat here from time to time because it is close to my work and has vegetarian options.  I am not a big fan of generic Chinese food to begin with, so I may be a poor judge.  This place is like most other Chinese places as far as that goes.  Heavy on the bland sauces, dried out fried rice, boring selection of veggies in most dishes.  You can get steamed rice, but make sure to specify and don't expect it to taste that great.  The Hunan bean curd is fairly tasty and a touch spicy, but the veggies in it are uninspired. I had the special the other day of szechwan asparagus with tofu and it wasn't bad.  The sauce was a bit heavy and not spicy, but the asparagus tasted fresh and wasn't overdone.
The food is mediocre, the service isn't that friendly or helpful, the prices are ok.  If you like generic Chinese food, give it a try.
