This is a solid sandwich shop that also serves beer and wine. The staff is friendly and the sandwiches are all pretty good. I like to sit at the bar and have a beer while I wait for my food. The Sassy Kat and the Southern Lady are my favorite sandwiches, although I don't think I've ever seen one that didn't look good.
It's cool that they renovated an old gas station to make this place. I like the way the place looks and the general theme of the business.
This place is a sandwich and beer place that is a little bit more upscale than the average sandwich place. Â The management and staff were friendly, and the decor is nice. Â I didn't check out their beer selection at the bar, but it didn't seem like there were many brews on tap.
Got the Left turn at Albeturkey sandwich when the honey bunny and I came here on a whim. Â
The sandwich itself was decent, but nothing out of the world. Â The sandwiches each have their own little flair, but I really didn't taste anything that would separate Bob's subs from the rest (she got the Little Wren). Â It's good, but the sandwiches are a little bit pricey for what you get.
I really don't know what to make of this place; it's sort of a tweener type of place. Â It's nicer than your average sandwich spot, but at the same time I don't see it being nice enough to command the prices on the menu. Â Nor are the sandwiches good enough either. Â In my opinion you can get a sandwich that's just as good at Jimmy Johns for cheaper.
Bottom line, I'd come to try it out to form your opinion, but this place would not be on my regular rotation of spots to eat at. Â Check out burke street pizza for a better sandwich.
My wife and I went to Bob's on a Sunday afternoon and shared an amazing 12' albaturkey sandwich. They have a great atmosphere with a garage door that opens on cool days while enjoying an amazing sandwich with a local brew. I would def. recommend them to anyone looking for a great sandwich shop with an eclectic feel.
Review Source:Really like this place. Good atmosphere to get a sandwich, beer and watch a game. On warm days they roll up the old garage bay doors to the outside. Â The walls are decorated with old pictures of Winston and local artists. There are numerous TV's throughout and they will change the channel for you if you ask. Only reason they don't get five stars is that I wish they made cooked food as well, instead of just toasted sandwiches.
Review Source:Since I'm new to the area a coworker has been taking me to various places that he considers good during lunch. Â This has definitely helped in learning the lay out of the land.
Out of all the places we've gone to this one seems to be quite high on the list and I can't complain. Â The sandwiches are good, fairly cheap and the service is wonderful.
I do wish I didn't just go there for lunch because I'm certain a beer would go down great with one of their sandwiches.
By far this is our favorite spot in Winston (granted we go there at least once a week for trivia on Wednesdays and live within walking distance...). The sandwiches are delicious and unique and you won't meet a better, friendlier staff. The ingredients they use are always fresh (I had to go there one morning to pick up my girlfriend's purse that she left the night before and they were having veggies and whatnot delivered) and amazingly tasty! I'll admit that the prices are a little high, but it's definitely worth it for subs you'll never find anywhere else and an awesome atmosphere! Plus Robert, the owner, is good people.
Review Source:I've only been once (late lunch), and I don't think I'll be returning. For me the prices were especially high for not very good food. The atmosphere was exactly as you'd imagine given the picture - kitshy, high ceilings, lots of booths..very reasonable for a diner.
However, I didn't enjoy my meal and I remember being annoyed at the pricing structure around sides. It was something like the sandwich plates were already very pricey for what they were, but if you wanted their special side of the day you had to pay an upcharge or something.
I'd read several reviews on google and other sites including this one and expected so much more out of this place. I have to say the staff was extremely friendly. I like that you order at the register and they bring it to you and the drink station is self service. They also have cheerwine where most places don't.
DH got the "Sloppy Pete" and he said it was just typical manwich. Other than the fact they add lots of cheese and the bread is good the actual manwich was no different than the canned stuff which he was really disappointed since we'd read such good reviews about the sandwich.
I do like the sub bread they use. It's not like subway or any of the other sub shops. It's got a good crust but not hard at all and it's easy to eat.
I got the "Left turn at Albeturkey". I liked it but I do wish it would have a different type of meat. I would like it more if it weren't deli meat. All their sandwiches are deli meat and it would be nice if some were like chicken strips or some type of grilled chicken or turkey. That sandwich just had so much more potential.
The one real reason I don't think we will go back is the parking lot. It only has 6 parking spaces but they have add'l parking up the street but it's not really much parking and honestly it's not the part of town I want to go walking down the sidewalk at night. I don't think it's a bad area but it's not very well lit and I wouldn't go there at all by myself.
The inside is really cool though. You can tell it really did used to be a gas station. There's a garage bay and everything.
It does look like a good place for young people to hang and have some drinks and watch games or something.
BTW I'm NOT a picky eater. I'm typically very lenient with reviews and rate things a little higher than the average person. I just think I had too high of expectations before we went. I wanted it to be so much more since I'd never been before. I'm not saying I will never go back but it doesn't look promising.
I met Bob, he was super friendly, and a nice server (Carley) was the best.
I heard they have fun parties sometimes, and for Halloween "zombies" will infest?
So come by Bob's- it's got a fun vibe, and a nice location near-ish to Wake.
Have a beer, watch a game, grab a bite to eat, just try it for goodness sake!
Great setup here - a retro gas station exterior, all shiney and white; a nice roomy dining area with tables, and a separate bar area with more seating, and big screen tvs. The interior is plain and functional. Food is ordered in the typical fast food style - go to the counter, give the nice lady your order, pay, and wait for your food.
Sandwiches come in 4", 6", and 8" sizes, which is kinda neat. There are 10 menu sandwiches listed, they usually have a daily special or two, and you can build your own sub from thelist of meats and cheeses. And they offer four or five side dishes like pasta salad, fried pickles, etc.
The "Sloppy Pete" is their version of the childhood favorite "sloppy joe" with munster cheese. It contains a thick, meaty beef mixture with some definite heat from the added item, Texas Pete, thus the name. You can get a side of pepper relish, but this thing doesn't need it. This is indeed a wet, sloppy sandwich, and if you choose to eat it in the traditional fashion, I would suggest a raincoat or go at it nake in the shower, with the curtain pulled. I chose a knife and fork approach, and escaped with only a small spot on my shirt, and an even smaller one on my pants leg. Good sandwich here, worth the effort and planning.
The" Left Turn At Albeturkey" is sliced turkey, pepper-jack cheese, pico de gallo (which has plenty of nice cilantro in it), lettuce, black bean spread, and guacamole. Lots of nice tastes here, although the turkey is of the paper thin, deli variety, and loses itself among the other , stronger flavors.
The "Southern Lady" is IG's Pimento Cheese, peppered bacon, and avocado. Again, some nice flavor combinations is this sandwich. The pimento cheese has some spice to it, but the whole combination benefits from a nice dose of salt and pepper.
All in all, this is a nice choice for a solid sandwich that is a little off the beat track. The sub rolls are nice, crusty and flavorful. The service is quick, and the prices are reasonable - we got 2 4" subs, and 1 6" for just over $14. The parking lot is very, small.
This place has some character and the food is decent. I wouldn't say it's anything to write home about if you're looking for vegetarian fare, as it only has one vegetarian sandwich on the menu (the Bellini). Otherwise, veg-seekers will have to build their own sub/salad or get something off the menu converted to a salad (everyone has this option anyway) and have the meat held (not sure why anyone would do this).
As it stands, I had the Bellini and it was pretty good, though, really, it was little more than a cheese sandwich. My dad had the Sloppy Pete (a take on the Sloppy Joe) and really enjoyed it. From the looks of it, it was basically a glorified plate of meat, but considering that's really all my dad looks for in a meal, he was pretty pleased.
Try the fresh fruit side, as it actually is fresh, not canned. I'd be more impressed if the fruit were the seasonal local/regional selections, but I don't know if this is the case and did not think to ask.
Bob's is worth a try, especially if you're looking for something casual and relatively quick, but it might not blow your socks off. I'd give it a 2, dad would probably give it a 4, so I've compromised on 3. Since it's walking distance from my house, I'm sure I'll be back.
This is one of my new favorite places!
Poppy's Pesto Pollo sub is superb. The pesto is terrific. My only comment is that it would be a little better if they did not use thin, lunch-meat-style chicken. Regardless, the bread and the pesto more than make up for that. I only get the 4 inch. While I didn't think that would be enough, it is more than I can eat when I get their fantastic breaded pickles along with it. They are not what you would expect with a breaded pickle spear (see: Big Shots fried pickles) as they are much less greasy. Furthermore, they come with the dipping sauce that ranch dressing wishes it could be. I suppose it could be described as a chipotle ranch dipping sauce.
Furthermore, they have great draft beers. I was pleasantly surprised to see Shotgun Betty on draft.
The renovation of this place is neat with the big garage doors remaining. A previous reviewer noted that it would be neat if they opened them up for live music. I would second their thought. If that does go down, I'd really love to be there. There is a general "fun" theme about the place, often with people playing baggo in front of the restaurant. The employees are extremely friendly. All around, it is a good experience, and I cannot wait to go back.
I'm digging this place so far. I love a good sandwich.
I've tried a few and have really liked them. The Sloppy Pete is quite good (be sure to make Pete angry), but is... well... um... sloppy. Very sloppy indeed. Get a big one so there's no need to ask for sloppy seconds.
(Sorry, I had no choice.)
Make your own is a great option, except that there's no list of ingredients anywhere to be found. Instead, one must peruse the menu and just pick out anything that sounds good in any of the other sandwiches. The Southern Lady is also tasty, but I'm not crazy about her (do Southern Ladies give sloppy seconds?). Granny's Hammy is nothing like I'd typically order, but I gave it a shot and enjoyed it, except that they seriously skimp on the ingredients on this one. It was all bread and little else (the sloppy seconds gag will not be used when speaking of Granny. But that reminds me... I think I saw a video once called Gagging Grannies).
Sweet potato fries are worth skipping. I tried them once and they just weren't very good; limp and a bit burnt.
I bought their "tomato bisque" once and was slightly disappointed, though it tasted OK. First, it arrived at my table cool. After having them warm it for me, I tasted it and then set my spoon in the bowl as I continued to eat my sandwich. When I pulled the spoon back out, it was coated in cheese. That's right - their bisque doesn't use cream, but cheese! Good, but unexpected when I had asked for tomato bisque.
I love what they've done to this building. I hope the bay door still functions, because with spring & summer upon us, this would be a killer location for a little weekend food & music venue. Pull some tables into the parking lot, set up the equipment inside, open the garage door and let the party begin...
Oh, and about that parking lot - there are 4-5 spaces. I am not joking. Four or five parking spaces. They also share the lot next-door, and it's always full when I go for lunch or dinner at a normal time.
Service is attentive, if not always helpful.
("So what are my options if I want to make my own?" "Uhhhh... Anything on the menu.")
Overall, 6/10.
I had my second trip to Bob's over the weekend. Â My party was able to sit outside and enjoy a beautiful Saturday while enjoying our really good food.
I ordered the Granny's Hammy. Â The sandwich was turkey, ham, apple slices, goat cheese, honey mustard, and cranberry chutney. Â Sandwich was really really good. Â The bread was AWESOME. Â The salty ham paired well with the tangy honey mustard and the sweet cranberry. Â The apple slices proved a great crunch. Â If anything the turkey and goat cheese got lost in the other big flavors. Â But over all: Â really tasty.
I also got  cup of the Queso Pavo.  It was turkey and cheese soup with some southwestern kick.  It was good.  VERY thick and cheesy with a hint of spicy.  Again, the turkey got lost and probably wasn't even necessary as it was a nearly non-existent flavor profile.
They've got a great beer selection and the service was good as well.
I'll definitely return to Bob's.
P.S. Â Others have mentioned, parking can be an issue but shouldn't keep ANYONE from trying out Bob's.
You would think with a name like Big Gas that the food would be disgustingly greasy but it is not! The sweet potato fries are baked and they are awesome. I had a salad and it was okay. I ate here because of peer pressure and because I didn't want to appear to be a snob (though I am). I learned something the day I ate at the Big Gas, don't judge a restaurant by its name.
Review Source:Walked by tonight with my daughter, Emily, and our dog, Buddy, and was greeted by the owner, a very nice guy. Â They hope to open in late August for business (although they are taking part in the Downtown Winston Salem Bar Crawl on August 9th; they plan to set up tents in the parking lot and offer tours of the interior). Â In any event, the interior is about 3,700 sq feet if my memory serves from our brief conversation. Â They plan to have six beers on tap, a large selections of bottled beers and wines, as well as the subs. Â Can't wait!
