Was here just this past Thursday to see the Twangtown Paramours perform...which is always a good show! Â Cab's does book great music! Â I loved the cream of asparagus soup! Â The bread seemed to be better than previous visits and we gobbled up the new bruschetta type side that accompanied the bread, so much so that we didn't have an appetite for the entrees we had in mind! Â We also filled up on cocktails! Â Our server, Emily, was adorable and on point all night...even though we didn't end up eating anything after the bowl of soup, I wasn't between cocktails for too long. Â Thanks Emily! Â And thanks to Chef Luis and his Wife Lisa, the atmosphere at Cab's is relaxing and inviting and the food is still great. Â I will eat less bread and more real food on my next visit. Â ;)
Review Source:Excellent food! Ordered beer battered calimari to start. They serve with mashed potatoes. Kinda confused me at first, but it was the best calimari I've ever had. I had the paella as an entree. Everything was really good, but the chicken was just unseasoned, grilled chicken. Fiancee got pork tenderloin, which was a touch dry. Extensive wine selection. Building is a little drafty, but it's in an older building, so I don't fault them for it. Great atmosphere, great service. It is pricey, but with it. Will go back.
Review Source:I'm thinking between 3 and 4 stars. Cab's Wine Bar Bistro wasn't bad,but it wasn't amazing.Wanted it to be 5 stars, especially after reading all the great reviews.
Overall, good atmosphere, can get pretty loud during busy times. Don't be afraid to sit at the bar, because not only do you have to usually wait longer for a table. Some of the food was a hit or miss.
My chicken was outstanding. Lightly crispy, quite tender, and when paired with the mushrooms and cream sauce. My husband is not a "steak boy", but he said it was amazing. He had a garlic butter to spread on it, and a little went a long way. So, so good. We also had a glass of wine each, which was just OK.
We'll come back to try the diffrent food from the menu, since the restaurant is close to our house.
It is q decent place, not sure I am going to rush right back but the food is good, the restaurant is very casual inside. We actually rode our bikes along the prairie path from Lombard to the restaurant and then had dinner. Service was quick and responsive they all just wear regular street clothes which I found a little odd. We had 2 appetizers and a salad and a glass of wine total bill was just under $50... a little pricey but so it is.
Review Source:Another Vino Van Gogh event under my belt...I am definitely channeling my inner ar-teest lately.
I didn't order any of the food so I can't comment on that, but Cab's is definitely a cute place. Our event was held in the loft space which had me wondering if there was an elevator that I just didn't see (??). What if someone came to paint who had a handicap that prohibited them from climbing the staircase?
Anyways, I do want to point out that we had a dedicated server and she was excellent. Came by taking drink orders and was very prompt. They also brought everyone water with lime and kept replenishing those as well.
The loft space is positioned directly above the kitchen and the aromas were mouth watering. I think I might have to give this place a try sometime. There is also a nice sized, free parking lot just a few steps away.
Fantastic food! Â Cab's is such a great destination! Â If you are lucky enough to be there in the winter when the chef offers his Cassoulet (the best I've ever had... here or in France), or even one of his specials (the BBQ Korean Pork w/ Kimchi Taco's -- unbelievably great ) you'll always get great food. Â Very friendly, attentive service. Â It's a MUST VISIT.
Review Source:Fine dining at its best with an argentinian flair. Â Warm, friendly & inviting - Cab's does gourmet comfort food! Â The food is beautiful, tasty, and served in an elegant, quaint and friendly environment. Â Fell in love with this place years ago when we first moved to Glen Ellyn and love it still!
Review Source:Well I feel super conflicted about writing this review.
I want to give Cab's 5 stars.
But when I started this Yelp thing I decided that I was only going to write reviews of places as I go to them.
This means that I am never writing a review on my experience last year or based on things I love that I haven't been to in a while...Like Cab's!
I am one of the people that the bartender fawns over. Â
I feel like I am home when I walk in.
My history with Cab's is long.
I have had some awesome meals there and some seriously fun times.
My girlfriend, who had here rehearsal dinner here 12 years ago and I had some seriously not good appetizers when we were here last.
The Brie was burnt and yucky, the sweet potato fries were mushy and the seasoning was off base.
The service was excellent as always and the drinks were excellent.
I will go again and eat again and hopefully up those stars!
Great restaurant in the suberbs.
The bartender was our server. He was hliarious. He had recently shaved some crazy design in his hair for a type of cancer charity. Really cool guy.
The food and drink was great. We were seated right by the window which provided a more quite and romantic setting.
We need to go back to see what cab's has up there sleeve at the moment.
We had a decent dinner at Cab's last night with another couple. Unfortunately our initial encounter there was not the best.....the hostess was very scattered and ineffectual and quite flustered. We had 7:30 reservations and they tried to seat us at a table in the back and up a flight of stairs, sandwiched between two large parties, one of which contained a hideously loud cackling woman. Â We asked for another table and I happened to spot a 4-top just opening up downstairs. Anyway...we eventually were seated at the better table. But really...we shouldn't have had to jump through hoops like that. Â Bottom line: Front of the House = FAIL!
Our server was a bit better. Â Friendly, laid back. Got the job done. Kitchen cranked out some decent food, although lacking in any sort of presentation. Â I felt as if I was eating at someone's home, and not a restaurant. Â Keep in mind, this is not necessarily a bad thing, but when one is shelling out $$$...you expect things to be a bit more "professional."
I had the beet salad and then the scallop appetizer for dinner, washed down with a glass of sauvignon blanc (decent pour size...could have been a bit more chilled)...our friends had steak and shoe string potatoes and my husband had the paella. Â Everyone seemed to enjoy their food.
The atmosphere is lively and I really enjoyed the live music that came on around 9:00. Â Bottom line...think this is a place I would return for drinks and appetizers with friends. Â Hear some live music and kick back. As with all neighborhood joints...I wish them all the success in the world. Â It's a brutal biz and I always like to support the little guys. Â Cheers :)
I've eaten here plenty of times, and I can't say that I've ever been disappointed. My husband and I had our wedding reception here as well, it was small with about 50 people and they accommodated us with exactly what we needed.
Decent wine selection, small but tasty menu, and an excellent wait-staff. I would highly recommend this restaurant. The escargot is definitely my favorite appetizer and the green bean goat cheese salad is just as delicious!
I recently joined a large group of friends for dinner and to see a two-piece band, the Twangtown Paramours. This is the first time I've dined at Cab's. They accommodated our large group nicely. The service was prompt and fast but the food is a little disappointing. I ordered a Chicken Cesar Salad as my entree which was just slightly bigger than a small dinner salad and it was priced at $12 which was out of line. Â
I will say they have decent wine specials. Â I will return for wine and music but will definitely dine elsewhere beforehand.
I don't know what everyone else was eating? Their prices are very much out of line with the food being served. I had the shrimp and cork screw pasta. I haven't seen this type of noodle in a restaurant in quite some time. But that doesn't really matter. As I smelled the dish coming before I saw it. The shrimp were big and very over cooked. No doubt to cover up the fishy smell. It came with a salad that was pretty wilted and DOA. My friend had a salad as an entree and it was the same size as mine. But he was charged $12 bucks not including the cost of the cardboard cut out chicken strips. The band was great though. I would come back to see the Twangtown Paramours. Just hit up the White Castle on your way.
Review Source:We've been to this place twice now and all I can say is, it is WONDERFUL! The chef is a genius. An interesting menu and everything is prepared and seasoned to perfection. The wait staff is not only friendly but very helpful. The only reason I hesitate to give it such a good rating is, I don't want it to get so popular that it's hard to get a table when we go there. But they deserve all of the business they get and I hope they're there for a long time to come! It is a little bit on the pricey side but in this case you definitely get what you pay for! I HIGHLY recommend it!
Review Source:Love it, love it, love it! Went here with the husband because I am a huge fan of wine flights. I got the "other whites" which had 3 great wines. We split the charcuterie, the cheese plate special, and the duck pate. It was sooooo good. Probably some of the best pate I've ever had. The service was great and we weren't rushed at all. I will definitely come back and order an entree and more of the pate!
Review Source:I'm a big fan of Cab's. Â Even if it didn't serve good food (I like the crab cakes, salads, and fish dishes), I'd still like it for the fact that unlike so many places in the Western suburbs, they don't start mopping the floor, turning the lights up, and stacking chairs when it's about 9 p.m. Â You can just sit, enjoy your meal, and chat while regulars (think a dressed up "Cheers," seriously) wander in to sit with their friends late into the evening. Â They have a great wine list and last time I went I couldn't decide what to order and the very friendly and patient waitress brought me tastes of 2 or 3 chardonnays until I happened on the one I liked. Â I like the artwork, the cozy feel, and everything I've ever ordered there has been very good. Â I wish there were a few more seafood and/or vegetarian options, but I do have friends who like to go for some of the odd/exotic meat dishes they serve.
Review Source:My sister and brother-in-law who are Glen Ellyn residents brought me, my boyfriend, and the rest of the fam here on a Saturday night and we all LOVED IT :) We all split the fried calamari and crab cakes as an appetizer (both were awesome). I ordered the seared halibut over some rice and veggies (a seasonal special) and my brother-in-law ordered the grilled mahi-mahi with asparagus over some mashed potatoes (also a season special). We realized half way through scarfing down our amazing entrees that the waitress had switched them but we had both been too hungry to notice. To correct the matter, part way through our supper we switched the meals back, so I got to try both :) Each dish was so phenomenal that we didn't even care about the mistake. We just took the mix-up as a sign from the gods that we must try both dishes ;)
My boyfriend got a regular menu item. I think one of the seafood concoctions. He let me try one of his tasty little scallops and they were mouth watering!! Even though we were all happy and stuffed we ordered dessert (phew...good thing I watched my diet over the week). Four of us split the chocolate cake and I got to try my dad's fruit cobbler. Both were excellent, but I personally preferred the cobbler w/ ice cream :)
The only thing I wasn't super crazy about here was my Riesling, but I can't hold that against them b/c I know nothing about wine or their proper pairings...next time I think I will ask for a suggestion....
Also, two thumbs up for service (even with the entree switch). It was a busy night and our waitress was still pretty attentive :)
I came to Cabs with a friend later in the evening to have a glass of wine or 2... they had a live band playing, and my only complaint is that the band was super loud for the small space, but the atmosphere of the whole place was great! the wine we had was also really good. I would love to come back for dinner on night where they don't have a band playing.
Review Source:cab's used to be my dad's go to place. before he met his future bride, he would take a different lady from yahoo personals here at least 3-4 times a week! this place is perferct for that kind of thing, as it's very small and intimate, and the owners are super friendly (picture my dad schmoozing the ladies with plenty of "i know the owners here" type stuff. PLAYA PLAYA)! side note: this is also where he proposed!
anyway, i've had dinner here a few times over the years, and the food is always superb. fairly reasonable prices for the quality, above average drink selection (i'm not a wine person, but they have some nice whiskey and tequila), and great service in a cozy little space.
but what i just learned this weekend is that they have live music on the weekends after regular dinner hours. and guess who just happened to book a show here? none other than my homies, Clifton Roy & Folkstringer! it was a great, intimate venue for a show, and we had an awesome time sipping drinks and relaxing.
finally, they have some great artwork in here! almost all of it is for sale, and the standouts for me were the fresh oils of rock legends upstairs(jimi hendrix and johnny ramone were sweet), and the jazz series done by the owner's brother. check this place out!
this is a cute little place! my friend and i had a bottle of sparkling wine with mussels and veggie fondue appetizers. The atmosphere was cozy and initimate (great for a date i guess ^^). The mussels were good, but there were several in there that were a undercooked and the dish itself came out lukewarm instead of hot. The fondue isn't the typical dip-in-cheese fondue, its just veggies covered with beschamel sauce and goat cheese which was good too!---the portions were fairly larger than i expected :)
The prices for the food are reasonable, i think the only thing that will get you are the drinks~ next time i'll some of the entrees
great place considering there is no where to go in burbs...
I had a great meal here. Â The menu was very eclectic, and I ordered a sausage and mushroom risotto which was creamy and delicious. Â The service was fantastic - maybe due to the fact that most of the staff knew my friend, but fantastic regardless. Â We had the calamari appetizer which came with mashed potatoes (!) and a balsamic sauce - super duper yum. Â The waiter also gave us fried green beans because I had mentioned that those sounded awesome. Â And awesome, they were. Â
The desserts looked great, but I was wayyy too full of deliciousness to try. Â Thanks!
Cab's in is in downtown Glen Ellyn conveniently located not far from a public parking lot. I'm assuming it's in one of the original downtown buildings because the restaurant space is long and narrow and the ceiling is covered with tin (original?) tiles. The walls are painted a sunny yellow and the floors are of wood. Overall it's a comfortable space.
The one oddity in the decor is the railing around the bar which isn't much more attractive than a wood and chicken-wire fence and reminded me of the same. While we were eating, one of the customers knocked her wine off this railing and onto the floor next to our table, splattering my husband some and just missing me. The staff checked on us and apologized but didn't strike me as too concerned.
I ordered a roasted duck breast with mixed potatoes (sweet, russet, and red I believe), braised cabbage, and roasted asparagus. Everything arrived in a pile on my plate with the sauce for the duck freely mixing with the braised cabbage juices and completely smothering the potatoes. It was kind of a mess. The roasted asparagus was perfectly cooked. The duck itself was delicious having crispy skin and moist meat. However because the poor duck could not escape the plate of sauces and juices, after a few bites it became just another in a series of too many too sweet mouthfuls. By the end of the meal it seemed every bite tasted the same.
We ordered the creme brulee with chocolate for dessert. It was very disappointing. It did not crack! Creme brulee  must crack when you first breach it with your spoon. That is its finest moment. Apparently Cab's had refrigerated the creme brulee after caramelizing the top. In addition, the chocolate on the bottom was extremely hard and cold. If I'd had my wits about me, I would have sent the creme brulee back when I noticed the top was soft.
Our waitress was friendly and was helpful when selecting the wine. I was surprised she did not seem more concerned about us after braving shards of glass and soggy creme brulee. I would have offered free dessert or coffee at least.
Though it's nice to support a local business and not a chain, Cab's is overpriced for the quality of food they serve and their service. With the competition in the area, I would think this risky. I would consider returning for wine and appetizers as perhaps wine is where they shine. However, I'll spend my fine dining money elsewhere.
Had a fantastic meal there last night. Â Not only was the food outstanding, but the waiter gave everyone in our part a free glass of wine because due to a large party the food was taking longer than usual. Â (we never even complained and in reality it didn't bother us) Â Just a very nice gesture that shows they really care that their customers have a positive experience dining there. Â I had the crab cakes, my wife had the risotto, and our friend had the salmon. Â We all loved our meal. Â A great restaurant to get away from the suburban chains. Â Can't wait to go back!
Review Source:I've never been here, but I bought my parents a gift card from here one time on a whim because my parents are wine fans, and I thought they might enjoy it. Didn't know anything else about the place.
My experience buying the gift card was pleasant, and the woman who sold it to me was very helpful.
So i can't vouch for the food, but ever since I got them that gift card, my parents come back for their anniversary every year. It must be good.
This place was ok. Â The other reviews got my hopes up. Â It's a very small place, on Main Street in Glen Ellyn. Â There is a parking lot to the south which is where you need to park unless you get lucky and find a spot on the street.
As far as inside goes, think long and narrow with tables on your left up against the wall and the bar on your right separated by a fence-like contraption made of wood a wire. Â Although they have wood floors, it's pretty quiet in here except for the noisy people at the bar. Â There was a "bigmouth blondie" who was talking SO LOUD it was really annoying.
The food here was ok, but took really long to get. Â We had 2 appetizers, calamari and wild mushrooms. Â They were good and so was the wine we had with it. Â Then when it came time for an entree, I held out since I wanted dessert. Â Hubby ordered crab cakes which took about 25 minutes to get. Â They weren't busy and when you're paying $10 an hour to a babysitter, that seems kind of long. Â Anyway, the crab cakes weren't seasoned much at all and they were thermonuclear. Â I like my food hot, but this seemed like microwave hot. Â After he was finished eating, we waited and waited and finally I flagged down another server and asked her to find our server. Â I got my cake and it was a pretty skimpy slice. Â I don't like those huge desserts, but this was the "I'm on a diet slice". Â I skipped my entree for this???
So we were there for about 1.5 hours and it was ok. Â Just another place on the list that you can go to.
I love this place.
I have been there twice and it is fantastic. The atmosphere is very intimate and lively. The staff is always happy to explain a menu item, make recommendations and constantly looking to satisfy. The wine selection is outstanding.
I'd recommend this for a nice dinner out for a special occasion or just to get out.
great place to hang out and enjoy some wine and apps, or stay for a very good entree. Â it's a very honest place, with no pretense, straightforward ingredients, and a solid wine list. Â the owners are there most nights, and are very concerned for the patrons enjoyment. Â one night, the chef even came out and gave me a few cooking tips, and bought me a glass of wine (that i sure didnt need :)
overall, i highly recommend it, i think it blows away whatever that place is called across the street for a full service dining experience.
the best little spot in the whole darn town to get your eat on. Â the wine list is very reasonable and quite extensive. Â the entrees are exquisite and unique (i had the pork glazed with apricots and jalapenos). Â as far as presentations are concerned, it's nothing outstanding, but the taste makes me forget the lack of creativity. Â i will be going back very very soon!
fyi: Â make reservations on the weekend, this place is tiny!
Cab's is a quaint little restaurant with lots of personality and style. Â It is in downtown Glen Ellyn and if you did not already know, downtown Glen Ellyn is really growing and is really cool.
The staff at Cab's was very friendly. Â They make you feel at home as soon as you walk in the door.
The wine selection is excellent. Â In fact the name, Cab's is short for Cabernet's.
The menu is unique and fresh.  The meal presentations are beautiful.  Fish, chicken,  beef, pork and KANGAROO.  Yes I said Kangaroo.  I had never seen Kangaroo on a menu before.  At first I thought it was a joke, but  no mates it was Roo on the barbie straight from Down Under.  One of my dinner companions was even brave enough to order it.  I tasted it and  to me it tasted of wheat.  Yup, some sort of wheat type product.  Who knew?   Needless to say, I will not be eating Kangaroo again anytime soon, however I would for sure eat at Cab's again in the near future.  It was a great dining experience. Â
Innovative menu
delicious food
friendly staff
good service
KANGAROO
what is not to love?
