Unfortunately I am not able to give this "cafe" negative stars as this is not an option so i am forced to give it one. While out walking with my fiancee we came across this place and decided to give it a try. While sitting down and looking over the menu we realized there was no vegetarian options this on its self is not a big deal. At this time the most obnoxious waiter in the world walks up to the table after we explaining to him that we are both vegetarian he completely ignores us and proceeds to ask if we would be interested in the specials (all were meat options).  We again explained that we were vegetarian and would be leaving he continues to talk and explain about other dishes they have. He mentions that they would be able to put together a pasta dish with out meat. Once i asked him what kind of pasta they have he acts like he never said pasta and in a smug voice said that they do not serve pasta. After all this they  have the audacity to charge $8.50 for a bottle of water.
Review Source:I have been dining here over the last 5 years, off and on. When I realized I would be dining here on New Year's Eve I decided to take a look at the reviews. I was surprised to see the reviews so mixed and skewed towards negative. Nevertheless, we kept our reservation and went with E&S wide open. And I am glad we did. As has been my experience, the prix fixe  menu held great choices 4, apps, 4 mains and dessert. I had the foie gras torchon, my dining partner had the goat cheese ravioli. I love foie gras but should have ordered the ravioli. Both were good but the ravioli was outstanding, served hot and gooey in a great tomato sauce. For the main course I ate every single bite of my Chilean sea bass with truffle potato, mmmmmmmm........the serving size was generous and I was stuffed! My partner had the rack of lamb with vegetable tian. Although the lamb was tasty it would have been better if served medium rare instead of medium. We had not requested this but neither were we asked.
The restaurant has been slammed for lack of service. Well they were at the top of their game this night. There were an abundance of servers, service was quick. In fact, we had expected to stay through midnight but we finished our meal in about 90 minutes! And it looked as though other diners had about the same timing so that experience seemed consistent.
As for nice touches for the evening, the restaurant was festively decorated, there was  live music, and at midnight there were party favors. We missed midnight but the hostess let us know what we would be missing!
I will continue to go to Cafe Monet. As one poster said, if Wes is in the kitchen the restaurant is at the top of its game. This night, unusually, we did not see Wes but when we inquired we learned he was working hard in the kitchen...and it showed.
I came here last Friday with my girlfriend to celebrate our 2 year anniversary. However, everything about our experience here was perfect and everyone was extremely professional and courteous. I really really like this place! The staff is super friendly and attentive.
We picked the three course menu, and the waiter was extremely knowledgeable about everything on the menu, giving us his recommendations and helping us pick out something for our tastes. The food was very well presented, I almost didn't want to disrupt the piece of art on my plate. We came out of the restaurant feeling very full and happy and impressed with the service and food.
This is definitely somewhere I would go again, especially if celebrating a special moment.
Delicious beet salad. Hanger steak with frittes was blah. Medium rare was medium well and frittes were blech. My husbands duck was good, but came out too rare after he asked for it well with no red. They took it back and cooked some more, but came back out stating this is as much as the chef can do without compromising the meat. I am tired of chefs that insist their way is IT! Give it to a customer the way the want. One member of our party ordered Boulliabase Poor guy left hungry.
Review Source:I am still slightly confused by their menu with the un, deux, trois listing. 1 & 2 are served as appetizer size (aka, bite size) while 3 is half an entree. To make it even more confusing their are two prices next to the 3's, i.e. $17/24. I'm not really sure how to interpret this. I didn't see the bill at the end of the night, but I was never asked while ordering if I wanted a smaller or larger dish, so what does the price difference correlate to?
Salads were delicious. But at $12 a pop for nothing TOO special, or large I was slightly disappointed. I ordered the Salmon as my main dish which was actually phenomenal. Â Unlike my counterparts my Salmon came on a bed of vegetables whereas the chicken and meat were served a top Mashed potatoes.
One person in our group ordered the short rib... you can say short again. Not sure how that one tiny piece of beef can fill anyone up.
We ended our night with the warm chocolate tort which was delectable, albeit small as a shared piece.
Prices: Off the Un list, ~$12, deux list, ~$15-17, trois list ~$20-25. Â And bare in mind that no single dish will you fill up, unless you're anorexic.
Don't forget to BYOB, and enjoy your quasi-French themed food in glorious Millburn NJ.
Plus enjoy nice decor while you stare at the pear paintings and other treats.
I was looking for a parking spot in the Millburn area to grab lunch, where I stumbled across Café Monet.  I've been a fan of this place ever since.  The price is very reasonable, despite the other comments; the owner/wait staffs are very pleasant.  The atmosphere is quiet (great for a meaningful conversation), the food comes out a bit slow, but it's sure worth a wait.  I can't rave enough about the chicken sandwich here, I haven't tried anything else menu because it's that good.  The French baguette is authentic, the chicken is crispy on the outside (with bursting flavors), and moist on the inside.
My Yelper friends, let's give Café Monet a chance when you're in the area.
Very disappointing. The service was slow and somewhat incompetent. 40 minutes between the first two courses, 25 minutes between the second course and the entree. Â My wife spilled her glass of wine on the table, so the waiter threw a few paper towels on top and walked away, leaving it to us to mop up the spill. They never removed the wet towels; the entrees were served on top of the soaked paper towels. Unbelievable.
The food was mediocre at best, with several dishes not coming out as described in the menu. "Bouillabaisse" was a few pieces of seafood in lemon juice. "Cassoulet" was a piece of chicken on top of beans. My "sous-vide" lamb had none of the texture that sous-vide should impart, and was served on a bed of cold couscous. The escargot was dry. (Shouldn't a French restaurant use butter?) French fries tasted exactly like Burger King: starchy on the outside, mush on the inside, and overly salty.
I'll overlook a few mistakes, but this place did nothing right.
This was a great surprise in a road filled with lame choices for brunch. Â The portion sizes were good since we were starving. Â If you are really hungry, don't go here!
The salmon in pastry was great. Â The steak frite was great as well. Â
Service was a bit slow, but friendly. Â A nice quiet spot on a lazy sunday.
We actually enjoy that there is a place that is BYOB and offers small to large plate options. We have usually enjoyed every meal, I have brought several out of town and local friends here. We ate here as recently as January and again really enjoyed the short ribs, one of our favorites. I also love the beet salad. It has a nice atmosphere and its lit as you would expect a nice french cozy bistro in the evening. Many evenings its only got a couple tables at a time filled -so usually not a problem to get seated. We usually still reserve via open table.
Review Source:Café Monet was an over-priced disappointment. My fiance and I went for Valentine's Day. We were seated promptly which was nice. However, the service proved underwhelming. Given the prices on the menu, one would expect better service. For example, the waitress was unsure which knives to give us for each of our entrees, and stumbled over telling us the specials. In addition, there was a long wait in between the appetizers and the entrees. The food was also a disappointment. The bread served at the beginning was tasty, but should have been warm. My parsnip soup really needed salt to taste anything, and the foie gras my fiance ordered was served in huge, unwieldy slices with a tiny piece of bread to accompany. Not only were the proportions off, the pate itself had too strong of a taste to be truly of high quality. For the main I ordered the rack of lamb, which was actually a well done entrée, saving the cous cous side, which was lacking any interesting flavors. My fiance ordered the braised rib special. This dish lacked flavor and did not have the soft consistency one looks for in a rib. Not to be repetitive, but due to the waitress' lack of knowledge on knife selection, he had to work through the ribs with a butter knife. Dessert was close to disastrous. The lemon meringue tart was clearly defrosted out of the freezer, and did not have real meringue. I ordered "chocolat chaud", which was most definitely Swiss Miss at $4 a mug. To harp on the service again, his espresso, our tart and my Swiss Miss were not served together, but instead awkwardly  minutes apart. I would give this experience a C minus. Also note, the crowd is a bit older, we didn't see any guests in the 20-35 range.
Review Source:Went on a Tuesday night at around 8pm, we were the third party in the restaurant that evening. Â Ordered the 'tasting menu' option and we really liked the option, food presentation and taste. Â The service was attentive. The decor is very nice and comfortable. Â It might be noisy on a Friday or Saturday night but on an off night it was peaceful. It is a BYOB. Â Apparently, a couple of nights a week they have live music, jazz and a harp player. Â They also do breakfast and lunch but do not take credit cards for those meals. Â They do take credit cards for the dinner meal.
We will go back, no doubt.
My mom and I decided we were going to catch up and have a girls afternoon. Â Decided to go to this french restaurant we've passed by several times.
We split the trout omelet special and the pear & brie arugula pistachio salad. Â Â The salad was quite good although it could use a few more slices of pear to justify title. Â The trout omelet was not good at all - we joked that the trout must have swam away because we could not find it. Â It was also under cooked so inside was runny. Â My mom & I actually both became somewhat ill 1/2 hour after eating it. Â I would also recommend that they add ice to the tap water that they serve to make it a bit more refreshing on a hot day. Â
Overall, we have several other places that we like more and maybe this place was just having an off afternoon but we won't be back.
Tiny menu seems to guarantee wonderful food prep and full flavor with each choice. Â After several visits I have found this tiny cafe to be consistent and worth every moderate penny. Â Though dark and clubby, I wouldn't quite call it romantic. Â To the extent you might actually feel as if you were in a small Parisian cafe, it's romantic. Â Noise can be harsh, though not always - depends on who's coughing up the guffaws. Â Coq au vin is better than most and must take more than a day to develop the flavor. Â It needs some flaming French desserts to top off an otherwise nifty night.
Review Source:Tried this place once for lunch. Besides the watercress soup(which was amazing), i was disappointed,
I had salmon - it was overcooked and not fresh. Salmon should not feel chewy and heavy. I still don't understand the bed of parley salad it came with. Who eats parsley salads. The parsley definitely was not meant to be a garnish, but served salad style with a vinagrette dressing....weird.
Maybe dinner would be better. The menu looked like it might be.
Pros: homely, french feel. Excellent service - did feel like being in a real french bistro (which I have been to)
Cons: small menu selection
Tried this restaurant for the first time, and overall I'd give it three and a half stars. It's a very small, white-tablecloth place, nicely decorated. The food was tasty and well presented, but the service was slow and inattentive. There was only one waiter, who inexplicably disappeared for long periods of time. He was also lacking in charm, which didn't help. Considering he had only a few tables to deal with on a slow weekday night, I expected a bit more in terms of service. Cost was reasonable, especially since it's a BYO.
