I'm a "frequent flyer" here.  This place is probably older than I am and the decor is proof!  But, if you are in the mood for some catfish, this is definitely the place!   Upon being seated you are served a big bowl of coleslaw and a basket of hushpuppies.  I love the hushpuppies!  (Note: If you like spicy stuff, ask for a side of the cajun cocktail sauce for dipping your hushpuppies)  I always order the 2 piece fried catfish filets with a side of grits!  My husband opts for the two piece blackend filets.  No complaints.  This is my "go to" place for my catfish cravings!  Love, love, love it!

I ordered the grilled snapper and my buddy ordered the all you can eat catfish. My snapper was OK but not overcooked. I have had so much great seafood during my 2 week stay. Mine was the seafood combo and came with large scallops and shrimp which were pretty good and much better than the snapper. The catfish was just OK and was over cooked. Tried hush puppies for the first time as they were supposed to come with the meal but were forgotten until we asked for them at the end of the meal. No Tatar sauce or lemons came with our food but it did come to others with the same  order as us.

I really wanted stone crabs but a single order was about $40 & all you can eat was $84.  Too bad there wasn't a sampler as maybe an appetizer. I come from Dungeness crab area (SF) and find it hard to believe there is any better crab and now I will never know.

An annoying air fresher that sprays periodically was mounted above us which we did not immediately discover. It left a bad aftertaste that stayed with us through the next day and was probably all over our food too.

We really enjoyed this place.  Yes, it's loud, and yes, it's a little divey, so if you're looking for a quiet or romantic place, this clearly isn't it.  We had the fritters (conch I think?) and they were outstanding.  I had broiled scallops & they were pretty good, but not  phenomenal.  My BF had the fried catfish, which was terrific.  Entrees came with a salad and a side, which were good.  I would definitely return.

ALL YOU CAN EAT STONE CRABS.

    That is all.

Not really - this place is a dive, so expect a dive. Decor and carpet seem to be the original from the 70s, but who cares? AYCE STONE CRABS!!!

I've been with people who have gotten the fried catfish and rave about it, but I can honestly only tell you about the stone crabs - fresh, pre-cracked, and they do keep them coming out.

Make sure to check their stone crab blog or call ahead to make sure they have enough crabs for AYCE - other than that, ALL YOU CAN EAT STONE CRABS!!!!

I'm going to violate a couple of my own rules of review for this one, including writing this after a first visit.  In fact, I just returned from my All You Can Eat stone crab gorge fest at Catfish Deweys.  I went with a buddy, and I had called ahead this afternoon to make sure they had stone crab.  I'd been reading about shortages in the catch lately (apparently octopi love them as much as we do), and Truluck's, my other go to place for AYCE stone crab (Mondays only) has recently discontinued the offer based on the shortages.

I got lucky when I called today and Dewey himself answered the phone (actually the son of the original), and I received a short course on the vagaries of the "catch", and when Dewey determines he can offer AYCE of these precious morsels.  I met him tonight at the restaurant, and talk about a really nice guy.  And I can tell you, the medium stone crab claws were delicious.  Ice cold (as was the beer), sweet, perfectly cracked, and served by a terrific server, Diane, who was clearly concerned about our dining experience, and keeping those wonderful claws coming.  And coming.  Almost as soon as we had pulled the last one from the plastic bowl, a new bowlful appeared.

    Here's why the 5 stars:

    1)  The stone crab - our raison d'etre for being there tonight.  Described above.  Great.
    2)  The decor - we loved it.  This "joint" does not pretend to be anything other than what it is - bright, clean, 50's wood paneled, paper napkin, plastic plates and bowls, hustle and bustle joint.  Loved it.
    3)  The service - Diane.  Enough said.  She really did care.
    4)  The food - We were also able to sample the fried catfish and fried shrimp.  Outstanding.  Even the sides we chose, the hush puppies, coleslaw, onion rings - all finger lickin' good.  Better even.

Fun and delicious, that's why the 5th star.  Are they the same 5 stars I would give Alinea in Chicago?  Of course not.  But this is a 5 star, delicious and fun dining experience all the way.  I'm going back really soon.  Maybe tomorrow.

Very mediocre, from start to finish.

The service although personable, was absent for long stretches.

No value to the meal. I would try other places before returning.

After much hesitation I decided to try this place with my future mother in law and her bestfriend.

The Place:  Kinda dingy looking.  If I have any complaints this was it.  They need to makeover this place.  I mean the chairs arent even comfy.  I think most people eating this food probably arent the fittest in the crowd.  So having small tiny chairs that are really uncomfy isnt good.

    The Waitress:
She was a doll.  She was attentive.  I didnt like that our salad came out 3seconds before our main dish though.

The drinks:  I ordered a Long Island Top Shelf no sours sub OJ. -Great
The other lady at our table ordered a prickly pear martini.  She said it was great.  It came nicely garnished.  I think the price of domestic beer is high here.  And well the bar area could use a makeover..looks like its stuck in the 70s.

    The food:

OMG OMG OMG this is why I am giving this place a 5.  I came for the food and that well they did deliver.  I ordered the scallops.  They came out on a HUGE platter.  ( I posted a photo) PERFECTLY cooked.  I could tell they sauteed them.  Awesome flavor.  The other ladies ordered the catfish.  One had the whole fish while the other had the fillets.  Both loved it.  The nice thing was the waitress offered to upgrade them for $1.00 to all you can eat if they wanted more.  They did not.  In fact they had to take home some because it was so much.

Parking:  The place is kinda in a shady area.  However there was a parking director outside in uniform.  Maybe that is why he is there?  I mean parking wasnt a problem at all.  So I dunno.

I LOVE this place.  I want to go back and try the ALL YOU CAN EAT crab.

My family and I came to this restaurant the day after Thanksgiving for a family style dinner. No one wanted turkey and ham, LOL. Coming from Miami to this Oakland Park location can seem like a trek  yet the food is well  worth the trip.
From the all you can eat scallops, to the lobster tails and crab legs, to the frog leg and gator bites appetizers. The food is really good here plus they make sure that you are well fed with large portions. You definitely get what you pay for. My  family had an assortment of dishes with fried, baked, and broiled fish (salmon, tilapia, and mahi mahi), fried and broiled shrimp, along with all the regular sides that you would expect from a seafood place. ( they were good too, but I was more focused on the seafood).
My aunt and cousin ordered the frog legs and gator bites. ( tasted like chicken) LOL.
The place has the set up of any restaurant. They are able to accommodate any size party, just call ahead to let them know what size party you are bringing.
They have a full service bar that can please anyone's taste. They also have specialty drinks on the menu that you can choose from.

Awesome night... Great waitress..Kelly, super friendly..food came out super fast..I had the sea scallops.. They were huge and there were 15-18 of them.. I was only able to eat 5...also had raw oyster here.. They were muh..just ok.. But can't wait to take family back for stone crabs and snow crabs...also tried fried pickles.. I guess you really can fry anything and it tastes good... Got a free sample of fried catfish and shrimp... But with the hush puppies, salad, theres no room...need to diet or save room to eat at CD... Saw a few people take doggie bags. :)  will definitely be back.

Been here several times over the years . . . the food has always been good for what it is.  Fried Catfish, shrimp, clams etc.  I recently went here for All You can Eat Crab Legs and mannn were those crab legs the business.  Reasonable at $29.99 and they tasted EXCELLENT . . . hell you didn't even need butter if you didn't want any . . . they were hot and sweet tasting.  Our waitress was bomb, she noticed we had cold crab legs on the table and brought out fresh hot ones without us saying a word.  Hell I'm not sure if you get Catfish with the Crab Legs or not . . . because I just stayed with crab legs.

We also had conch fritters and they too were fantastic.  Free Appetizer coupon on the website.  I have been to other places that offered more options, including crab legs, at the same price, which is why I'll leave a star off.  I mean the salad was a joke but you don't come here for that, but a nice salad with compliment everything.  The hush puppies are dangerous lol, don't fill up on em.

All in All, great place if you are fiending for some crab legs at a restaurant setting.

Huge servings of fried food, not my usual items of choice.  I tried the fried catfish, and it was delicious, the first piece anyway.  However, the large quantity seems to take away from the need to savor each bite, so the experience degenerated in a Kaufka-esque way after a while.  Interesting crowd, kind of reminded me of Nashville.  Definitely a good dea with decent food, if fried things are your thing.

On July 22nd 2012 decided to take 3 friends to CD's after I had a good experience in April.  The fried food was good, but the crab legs were not seasoned.  They did not want to honor the on-line coupon. Buy one dinner get one free. They said it was only one coupon per table.  It did not state that on the coupon.  They discounted an order of crab legs.  All cooks should seasoned the food the same way.  If I get back I might visit again depending on where I am staying in S FL.

What can I say fried anything is good..but they get it right every time...there blue cheese dressing is amazing..It's like crack for foodies...dip the hush puppy in it & it adds a whole new dimension... but  get the blackened catfish (watching the waistline) & it it very tasty...ribs are the only thing I would stay away from...like everyone says IT'S A LOW KEY PLACE..flip flop & Short's ............NO boca crowd here...I love it.....

Carrot here. Visited there last week.

Not sure who is reviewing this place, but the food and service was of low standards. I had catfish and I had one piece undercooked and the other overlooked. The fries were terrible, the tea not good. The server had an attitude when I presented their online coupon on my iPhone. I told him that their website said I could show the coupon and I would receive the discount. Thank god they accepted it, because the food was bad.

For those reviewers who have had good food here, I guess your lucky, but I don't see how that can be.

We attempted to have dinner here tonight.  We were seated right away, however, that's about as good as it got!  It took about 20 minutes before someone came over to acknowledge us. After about 10 more minutes, they brought the salad, hush puppies and shrimp cocktail. The shrimp cocktail was warm and the shrimp were slimy. There was a gnat in our salad as well.  After about 40 minutes, when our main course still had not arrived, we decided to leave.

We ate here for a late lunch on April 19 after some friends recommended it. This is a local place, and not fancy. It is packed during the evening and lunch hours.  The restaurant specializes in all you can eat fish and sea food which varies from day to day (the menu notes sharers will be charged appropriately).

The meal started with coleslaw (slightly vinegar) and hush puppies. Wife, who grew up in Texas and lived in New Orleans, thought the hush puppies were good and traditional corn meal batter. The coleslaw was very good.

She had the combination catfish and shrimp (fried of course) which was cooked perfectly in a light batter that was flour with a touch of cornmeal.

Now comes the reason for the 3-stars-- the stone crab claws. We went to the restaurant for the stone crab claws, even though it was not all you can eat. The stone crab claws are pricey (as they are everywhere, but probably about $20 less here).

The stone crab claws are served cold, and did not have the truly sweet texture of fresh stone crab claws. They were almost frozen in the center, and tasted as though they had been cooked sometime previously and then placed in water to thaw out. The claws were served with a mustard mayo sauce.

Side salad was a large portion with fresh vegetables (tomato, carrot, some cabbage) and a good blue cheese dressing.

Ice tea, both sweet and non-sweet was very good.

Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. Manager was nice as well.

If you like seafood and fried food, this is the place.  There is always all-you-can-eat something at Catfish Dewey's.  On Sunday's, it's Alaskan crab clusters.  You can also get some friend catfish to go along with that, but hey, why would you, right?  Dinners come with 2 sides and they will bring baskets of hush puppies to your table, too.

We all know crab clusters can be a lot of work, but the reward is worth it.  Because we gorged on so much crab, there wasn't any room for dessert and their key lime pie is supposed to be legendary.  Try this place and you will enjoy it!

A friend took my husband and myself for dinner, as I had never had Catfish before...I have to say the food was good... But the place was dirty and run down. The womens bathroom was totally gross. They say us like in a separate room they had with tables, too many people together do close.  I will not be back. They need to improve in appearance and cleanliness !

When you walk inside you might think you're entering the recreation hall of a trailer park as it sort of has a semi-shacky looking, kind of an old time Southern red neck décor about it. However, it's clean, neat and overall orderly.

It has a full bar and a very complete menu with every thing from farm raised frog legs (which is sort of a turn on for me), either blackened or served with garlic butter, fried oysters, clam strips, tilapia, grouper, dolphin (but I think they call it Mahi Mahi), barbecued baby backs, steak, stone crab (when in season), lobster tails (but only the Florida spiny back types), mud bugs, and down to their specialty being farm raised catfish which you can get either boneless or whole; headless with the bones. Myself, I've found the catfish to be more flavorful and moist when prepared with the bones left in the fish.

Overall is a good place and very enjoyable which is evident from the large crowds trying to get into the place for dinner, particularly during the Florida's "on season" periods.

They used to have later night entertainment they referred to as hoe-downs but when I inquired about it, I was advised that the entertainment had been discontinued; no reason given.

How could we have overlooked this place for so many years? You know you are in the right place when you are greated warmly by the hosttess and within minutes of being seated a basket of complementary hush puppies arrive. The menu has something for everyone. Not to worry for all of you health conscious folks, my wife raved about the grilled catfish which was moist and flakey.Ordered the grilled scallops and was equally impressed. Usually when I order scallops there not enough to satisfy my appetite. Not so here. Must have had a dozen and a half on my plate which, I shared with everyone. Rave reviews by our friends for the fried catfish and fried oysters. Tasted them and wholeheartedly agree. You get two sides with your meal. I opted for the collards and a  sweet potato which were terrific. No room for dessert!
    Thank you Yelpers!!!!!!!

The decor leaves something to be desired (think dirty fish shack chic with furniture that's a little worse for wear and plastic checkered table cloths), but the food is top notch.

I got the all you can eat stone crabs which came with all you can eat snow crabs and catfish as well. I tried the two freebies they threw in, and they were good (especially the catfish!), but the stone crab claws were the stars of the show. I ate a ton of them (4 or 5 lbs? ... yes I'm a fatty) and had some hush puppies as well (also great). The price is right, too.

Drinks were overpriced and weak (if I'm remembering correctly). Shoulda had beers.

A hidden gem found off the tourist track.
Catfish Dewey's ambiance creams down home Florida comfort with its red-checkered table cloths, dim lighting, chalkboard specials, and one-stall bathrooms. The place is so comfortable you don't want to leave, and due to their all-you-can-eat specials, you don't have to;). They have all you can eat specials 7-days a week, ranging from $15.00 -$34.00, and which include Snow Crab, Catfish (bone-in fried or boneless), scallops, mud bugs, clams, and shrimp.

In addition their normal menu has some of the best seafood platter options ever, you can get the grouper, shrimp, scallop seafood combo and decide which items you want deep-fried, blackened, broiled, or grilled. Not to mention that they serve basically everything with hush puppies and melted butter!

I was in the mood for some seafood and decide to go to Catfish Dewey's. I been there when I was a little kid, and now wanted to try it again with my adult taste buds. The food was Very Good! I went with my parents and my big sister and everyone really enjoyed the food. My mother order the Lobster and Snow Crabs. The rest of us decide to get the seafood combination platter which includes fish (your choice of fish), shrimps, scallops, and your choice of side. You can get the platter fried, grill, or blacken.

I only gave it three stars because the service was not the best. Our waitress took a long time to bring out our food. Other tables who got there after us received there food before us. When we needed our waitress to ask for napkins or drink refills she was nowhere to be found.

They lose a star for shady service that night.

The food is great for what it is. The menu is simple and seasonal.  The snow crab legs are very good and the florida lobster tail are very tasty as well. They have these hush puppies that are some kind of wonderful. They're so crispy and buttery it's brilliant! I can't wait to go back. Thanks for taking me Lacey!!

Gross. I did not enjoy this restaurant at all. Unfortunately, I was on vacation and this was the first restaurant I dined in for lunch. The place smells molded & our waitress was not personable. Maybe it was because she was a much older waitress than i've ever had before. The catfish isn't all cracked up as it's supposed to be. The fried chicken was soggy. The only thing that was somewhat decent was the Shrimp Linguine.

You won't catch me dining here again. Sorry!

Wow, maybe it was a bad day but I did not have a good experience here. First of all as soon as we walked in there was an odor of like dirty dish rag. We were then led to tables covered in red and white checkered tables that you know were just wiped down by the hostess who is holding it in her hands while asking our drink orders.
Anyway, getting to the food, being named catfish deweys, you would think there would be catfish, well not that day, apparently they were waiting on the delivery of the catfish but they were frozen so we would have to wait. I'm sorry, did you say frozen? Yup, you got it, not fresh. I settled for the fried shrimp because at this point I figured it was the safest thing and just wanted the experience to be over. Anyway, I do not recommend this place.

If your gig is quantity over quality then by all means, come to Catfish Dewey's.

It looks like everything is fried...deep, deep, deep fried and then kept under a heating lamp to make sure it all comes together.

Their fresh seafood items are (or taste like they are) frozen. Their side dishes are flavorless and feel as if they've been on the stove for weeks.

They specialize in all-you-can-eats of their fried dishes and they are very reasonably priced...if you're into lots of less than fresh fried food.

This is a place I would not recommend to anyone.

Zagat rated. My Yelp rating: 3.25

Fried catfish: Meh. The breading did not have much flavor. (3)
Blackened catfish: Tasty - although it was more "black-peppered." (4)
    Ribs: Tasty. (5)
Collard greens: Eh. Not so good. (1)
House salad with raspberry vinaigrette: Meh. They ran out of cole slaw. (2.5)
    Fries: Meh. (2)
Hush puppies: Decent. Some were more cooked than others. These are seasoned fried cornmeal balls. (3)

Verdict: Come here for blackened catfish or the tasty ribs. The catfish were very tender and not overcooked. Did not try the grilled catfish - it did not come recommended by our waiter. Lunch prices are good deals - $8 to $12. Dinner and all-you-can-eat look a little too pricey for this type of food. All-you-can-eat deals are also good if you plan on pigging out (and this is available everyday - and on days when a dish is not available for all-you-can-eat, it's a dollar more).

    Ambience: Southern fish shack

We ate here our second night in Fort Lauderdale on vacation.

To start off, the hush puppies were fabulous.  My daughter took a whole basket to herself and we had to ask for more.

We then followed it with some stone crabs... very reasonably priced, although it was a bummer they were out of the large ones (only medium and jumbo were available).

Sides were okay... I am not a coleslaw eater, but the grits were good.  My lovely husband got them to leave out the iceberg and only use mixed greens in my salad, so that was nice too.  My daughter had fried shrimp but was really too busy with the hush puppies (see above) to eat much.

I'd certainly go back for more stone crab.

Always consistent food and good, friendly service.  Never know who'll you see here.  Was once in the bathroom at the same time as Bobby Brown after he was in Lauderdale for some court case (shocking!).  Heard a strange snorting sound coming from his stall as I was washing my hands, but Bobby wouldn't do drugs.  Whitney was in the restaurant too and looked really bad.

Enough about the bathroom paparazzi (boy, that sounds bad), on to the food.  The AYCE is always good value no matter the season.  They have some of the best fried shrimp around, as they're not heavily breaded, just a light dusting (maybe that's what drew Bobby & Whitney there, sorry) of flour and eggwash and a nice fry on them.  The Stone Crabs are always good.

The only slight downside to the place is sometimes you have to wait a mighty long time to get to partake in the glutony, but there's a bar to imbibe at while you wait, so it's all good.

I met one of Miami's finest yelpers, Maria A, for some grub here last night. She suggested it as a halfway point between her home in Miami and my parents home in Boca Raton.

I was beyond excited when I read the Yelp reviews...all you can eat stone crabs for $40! Stone crabs may be just about my favorite thing in the world; just ask my husband who's always quite entertained watching me devour more stone crabs than he thinks is humanly possible whenever we go to Joe's Stone Crab.  However, there would be no stone crabs for me at Catfish Deweys last night because I realized stone crab season was still 3 weeks away! Oh, the tragedy...

However, I was still in seafood heaven when I arrived at this extremely laid back restaurant. Shrimp, scallops, clams? What's a seafood lover to order??  Definitely no catfish- ick! We settled on the coconut shrimp as an appetizer and then I got a plate of grilled scallops as my entree, which also came with a sweet potato- sweet! The coconut shrimp was a very tasty and while the scallops were cooked to perfection I gave up after eating 1/3 of them. Unlike stone crabs there's only so many scallops this gal can eat!

The real winner of the night....the complimentary hush puppies! Both Maria and I were embarrassed to admit we didn't know what hush puppies were, but I'm quite a fan of these little fried balls of goodness (i think the goodness may actually be bread).  Fried bread= genius!!

Our slice of keylime pie for dessert wasn't anything special- save your calories and $ for the keylime pie at Joe's instead.

During my next trip to Florida I'll be back during stone crab season and I'll be making my way back to Deweys.  Get those stone crabs ready Dewey!!

PS- Word in yelpland is that the hush puppies are made out of cornmeal. Learn something new on Yelp everyday...

We passed up stone crabs at Joe's Stone Crabs on Miami Beach the night before because we were planning on Deweys the next night...hmmm $45 for 7 or 8 claws at Joe's or $39 for all you can eat stone and snow crab at Deweys???  Duh!

7 of us ate here on Thursday night.  We were seated quickly and well taken care of.  The stone and snow crabs were awesome...and just kept coming.  One of the guys had the catfish and said it was delicious.  Don't waste your time (or appetite) on the included side dishes...it's all about the crab!!

This place reminded me of a panhandle seafood joint...laid back atmosphere with great food.  Joe's Key lime pie was better...but Dewey's was pretty good.

Went on a Tuesday night and you'd think they were giving away free money - maybe thirty people waiting ahead of us.  And still, it only took twenty minutes to get seated.

This place is a "joint".  You're not here for the decor, you're here for heaping piles of fried goodness like shrimp, clam strips, catfish, and hush puppies.  Went for the all you care to eat Stone Crab claws and it was worth every penny of the $40 bucks.  Try it, you'll like it.  All you can eat shrimp was amazing and only cost $18 (the shrimp, clams, and catfish come with the stone crab deal).

Only thing that sucks is the parking situation - be prepared to circle the block to get a space.

First of all, the free hush puppies are sooo frickin' good.  They are the perfect combination of a crisp outside and a soft inner texture.  It's sooo difficult not to fill up on them.

This is a southern seafood joint.  I enjoy the clams, the snow crab, the catfish here... everything is blast-from-the-70s decor, but I like it.  It feels like the real south in here, which is hard to find in South Florida (you have to go north to go 'south').  And it's so inexpensive compared to restaurants of comparable quality.  It's so "down home".

Beware of the all-you-can-eat deals though.  They're only priced a dollar more for a reason...because unless you have a really really huge appetite, all you can eat is the regular sized entree.  Portions are huge here, and come with lots of sides.  But if you can handle it, go ahead, try the all-you-can-eat stone crab legs.  Where else can you find someplace that offers AYCE stone crab?  But my boyfriend and I failed to eat much more than 2 lbs each; we about died.

Check their website for the specials of each day.  At night it can get crowded at prime time depending on the special of the day.

Pass the grits and collard greens!

Excellent downhome local restaurant , with the accent on CATFISH.

Service was great with complementary hush puppies and slaw, although the menu is big on catfish, there is also other seafood and burgers. I had the lunch special fried shrimp - delicious and moist.

Definitely worth gettting off I-95 on the way up or down to Miami.
