I visited on a Monday night and I was the only person in the place. Â That's somewhat scary. Â But I wasn't feeling all that well and needed a few cups of hot tea and something for my belly. Â The two rolls I ordered were fresh and good. Â I think I had the Crunch Roll and the Red Dragon roll. Â The sauce that acoompanied the Red Dragon roll was super hot... in the way that you remember it the next day. Â But it was good. Â They bring it on the side so you can measure your pain. Â I just poured the whole damn thing over the sushi.
Review Source:WOW, this place loves Mayo....
I'm not a fan, there I said it. Â I went once, tried three rolls and two were VERY dry and one was covered in mayo. Â Yea, not a fan.
Nice place, decorated well, clean, etc.
But for me, it's about the sushi, and this place did not do it for me, I'm sorry to say. Â I'll head back to the other place down the road....
WORST SUSHI EVER!
I wish I could rate it negative stars. What kind of sushi restaurant doesn't serve raw sushi?
White tuna tataki....to my surprised it was seared. AWFUL
White dragon roll....the white tuna on top was baked/smoked. ABSOLUTELY GROSS!
SERIOUSLY, I CANNOT EXPRESS ENOUGH HOW AWFUL IT WAS!
I have eaten twice at Caviar. The first time, I had noodles, and I was desperately hungry after learning some meat-eaters stole my catered veggie meal at the Seelbach during a meeting. I got all uptight and left to go eat at Caviar. The noodles were good. It was also good to get away from my meeting.
I just ate there again this past week. This time I went for the sushi. I realized we might have a problem when I noticed the latest menu has a heavy reliance on fried and cooked sushi. I had the cucumber roll, the futomaki, and the spicy tuna roll. The spicy tuna roll was the best, and it has quite a kick. The cucumber roll and futomaki roll were ok. Meh. The futomaki was not very well rolled.
The selection of cooked sushi for people who don't really do sushi is really good, but if you are feeling a little traditional, this is not the place for you, unless you're next door at a hotel and are sick of the bar food on 4th.
The service is polite and prompt.
This is my FAVorite sushi place in the city. If I know I am going here for dinner, I will not eat during the day, it is *that* good.
Their Caviar Special Appetizer is amazing: tempura fried avocado with crab and awesome sauces.
And the Kamikaze roll (another of the specialties) is something so good...I won't even let you try a piece of it. It is on my list of foods I would HAVE to eat today if I knew I was going to die tomorrow.
The service is great, the staff is friendly, and I think they are in a great location, though a bit hidden, as many people I know don't even know where it is. I highly recommend this place!
Being a big Japanese cuisine fan, it is a disappointment trying this Sushi restaurant in downtown. There are much better place in Louisville for Sushi.
Start with the curb appearance, the location of the restaurant is not too bad as it is so close to Four Street Live, but the front door is dark. There is only a small sign from the street side, and I missed it twice driving by. The deco inside is actually ok, but I'm surprised that there are only very few table with dinners, NOT A GOOD SIGN.
For the food, the biggest problem is the raw fish they use is not that fresh. I tried the rainbow row as the waitress mentioned it's one of the best. From salmon to tuna, it is not fresh at all, and it makes a big difference when eating sushi. Even the Eel (Unagi) is not that tasty, as this is one of my favorite, and almost all restaurant can do a good job with this. Â For dish presentations, there is much better restaurant in town like Hiko-A-mon or Maido, and their sushi taste way better.
The service is not that good either. I arrived restaurant past 8PM, and the waitress seems in a hurry to push me ordering. Maybe the chef is closing the kitchen soon? The waitress asked me (3) times within (5) minutes whether I have decided what to order after just sit down.
Overall, please try some other good ones in town if you plan to pay full price.
I love sushi. It loves me. Â My love affair with it began years ago at Caviar, and it continues to hold the number one spot reserved for sushi in my belly. Â It is hands down the best place for sushi in Louisville, and the fact that it is always easy to get a table and always provides speedy service are added bonuses. Â Spicy crab calls my name when I am there, so I typically get the Crunch Munch Roll and the Cardinal Roll--very meaty, and you can't go wrong with tempura! Â
Side note--do not, I repeat, do not eat the skin of edamame....this might sound silly to you, but I learned that the hard way when I was still a Japanese restaurant virgin. Â Luckily the waitress was very polite about it and brought me extra water to aid in the digestion process..bonus points for excellent customer service!
What a great place for sushi. Â We stopped in on a Saturday night and parked right next to the restaurant in a garage. Â Other people have complained that they were slow on Saturday night but that was perfect for me. Â I don't want to wait an hour for dinner. Â We walked right in and were seated immediately. Â The atmosphere was very nice and classy. Â There were no screaming kids or loud drunk idiots, just a nice restaurant for adults, FINALLY! Â We ordered a bunch of sushi since that was the reason we went there and everything was wonderful. Â The heaven roll was our favorite, maybe the best roll I've ever had anywhere. Â The Texas roll and the big mouth roll were good too, but once you've had the best its hard to eat anything else. Â Our waitress was fast and polite and everything was as it should be for a nice dinner out. Â The menu is pretty big so it looks like I'll have to go back soon.
Review Source:Went here for dinner on the Friday before Derby. We didn't have reservations, and no tables were available, but we were more than happy to grab the last two seats at the sushi bar. Being pretty hungry, the wife and I decided to order five sushi rolls with some Asahis. Overall, I was very impressed. Even with the crowds, the sushi guys were very quick. Everyone was very friendly at the restaurant. Of our five, the Sunday Morning roll, deep-fried with salmon and cream cheese, was a favorite and a bargain at $6.95. I wouldn't get the Kentucky Derby Roll again, at $13.95. The Banana roll was a special roll with fried bananas and functioned nicely as a pseudo-dessert roll. The other two rolls were the TNT roll (pass) and the Greengrass roll (highly recommended).
Being new to downtown Louisville, there are several other Sushi/Japanese joints we want to try and compare, but so far Caviar is definitely looking like a place I would frequent.
Sushi was great. After a slow start, pouring a glass of wine from the bottom of an open, warm bottle that was left on top of a heater, the waitress apologized and returned with a fresh glass from a newly opened bottle.
Good options for sashimi and nigiri as well as some speciality rolls. Although there were more cooked and fried rolls vs raw. Would definitely eat here again.
I admit to being a somewhat new sushi convert. Â But in that time, I've gone from ZERO to SUSHI in full force! Â During my workdays spent in Louisville, I've continued the search for good sushi and came to Caviar.
Overall, 3 stars, for indeed being A-OK, but nothing spectacular. Â The unnoticeable facade on the street side almost fits the sushi, which is nothing special. Â Though less traditional, I admit to really loving the specialty Caviar rolls, which essentially come out tasting like candy. Â But if you're downtown for work or at a hotel like me, definitely a good stop for your sushi fix.
Ate dinner here tonight. Nice lil place located in downtown Louisville, KY. Not very noticeable when driving by, but glad we stopped in. Was craving some sushi and was pleased with this place. It's not very big, but the atmosphere was very nice. I ordered the Philli Roll and the Double Shrimp Tempera. It was very good. And served very quickly. It's hard to find a good sushi place whereever you go...I was just glad this was a pleasant experience with just picking it from a hotel guestbook! lol.
