**This review is only on their catering**
I have never had a problem catering from Corner Bakery. Â Their online ordering system is user-friendly and even when I order over the phone, customer service is always excellent. Â Love the Corner Classic package! Â Sandwiches always arrive fresh and delivery is always on time. Â Their desserts are delish! Â I highly recommend Corner Bakery for your catering needs.
The Corner Bakery Cafe is such a warm and inviting looking restaurant. Â I passed it often, and I couldn't wait to sit down and have a bite to eat there. Â I ordered some pastries and two gourmet coffees. Â The coffees were both too sweet and the pastries looked so much better than they tasted. Â It was too cold to dine outdoors in their lovely, inviting patio so I stayed inside. Â It wasn't as comfortable or as good as I thought it would be but it is a lovely cafe.
Review Source:I walk past this Corner Bakery at least once a month since both my sister and I see specialists in NWH. Finally, after years of walking past it, we went in because it was a Saturday, it very cold and we were both really hungry.
It wasn't super busy but the way the line formed to place your order was a little off. The line stared at the entrance of the cafe so people were bumping into those who were already in line as they were walking in... weird. The tables were also really close to each other so it was definitely tight to walk in between since there were no aisles, you would have to walk all the way down to the west end of the dining area to come back up to sit by the east windows... downtown, to be expected.
Food was pretty good. Was not thrilled that there weren't enough vegetarian options. One soup (tomato, why does everyone do tomato?) and a veggie sandwich. Sandwich was very tasty and crisp. Didn't try the soup. Sister had the chicken noodle soup and she was pleased.
Staff was pleasant enough. I would consider going again provided it's not a vegetarian day for me since I do 'vegetarian or vegan only' days each week. Not sure if they have Wi-Fi since I logged onto the hospital's signal.
I like Corner Bakeries but this location has the worst service.
I order a nonfat latte and she rings it up as a pumpkin spice latte...really?
Mass confusion behind the counter...lots of staff but not super busy.
I make my way over to the espresso area to pick up my drink and no one is at the machine. After about 5 minutes, I ask someone if this is where I pick up my latte. He glances over to his order print out and there's my order! Â While waiting ten minutes for my latte, I had the pleasure of watching the nasty take out girl give everyone attitude as she called out order numbers. Customers that did not immediately come up to the counter after she mumbled their number were given major grief by this person and then she would carry on with her coworkers. Â This place needs an entire new staff in my opinion.
The food was great, love the chocolate muffins. So why only 2 stars? The Barista needs to be sent back to barista-boot-camp! He was AWFULL. So slow... So disorganized... He lost our order and then continued to ignore us and make drinks for others long after the error was pointed out. The deeper the line of people waiting got, the snippier and slower the barista was.
Review Source:I didn't know what to expect from this place as I have never been to a Corner Bakery before. Â This location is a tad bit confusing and busy with people going to work nearby, tourists (due to the proximity to hotels), people who travel for their jobs (again probably due to the proximity to hotels), etc. Â There are two register areas. Â It's important to be aware of this since one area could be mobbed and the other could have no line at all. Â The first area is right in front of you when you enter, and the second is to the right. Â If there seems to be a line right when you enter, duck, dodge, and dive to the right and go to the other register area. Â
Now, I got to the register and ordered a pumpkin latte and panini sandwich. Â Here they give you numbers and then they deliver it to your table. Â What they do not deliver to your table are coffee/hot beverages. Â The cashier did not tell me this and again how was I supposed to know since the space is big and confusing. Â When my food was delivered, I asked the server where I could get my latte. Â She told me that I was supposed to pick that up at the far right counter of the space. Â I mentioned that no one told me this. Â Now, this one act turned me from a disgruntled customer to a happy one. Â She said that she is very sorry about that and asked for the name of the cashier (which was on the receipt). Â I loved how my issue was acknowledged and addressed. Â I then went to pick up my latte and ate my panini. Â Both were delicious. Â My original review was going to only feature the food and bad service, but the server's genuine concern with my issue meant a lot. Â I will definitely return again due to the act of one kind employee.
We had a nice lunch at the Corner Bakery Café in the middle of a long day of conferencing and sight-seeing. I ordered the Santa Fe Ranch salad, without the ranch dressing (yuck!), and my beau got the Poblano Fresco on Poblano Cheese Bread, with chicken and no avocado. My salad was okay. It was very watery iceberg lettuce with chunks of chicken, corn and tomato salsa, and strips of tortilla, which I systematically picked out one-by-one (I should have asked them to hold the tortilla strips too). The chicken was not very flavorful and neither was the lettuce, but the salsa was very fresh and delicious. The poblano fresco was finished before well before the taste could be appreciated the way he scarfed it down, but it was a good, solid sandwich.
The prices were reasonable and our waiter who brought us our food and cleared our dishes was very friendly. It was a nice pleasant stop during a busy day, and I would recommend it.
I walk by this location every day on my way to work. I like Corner Bakery, I really do. But THIS location is the pits. Its always crowded, there's always a line in the morning, and on one occasion in particular they forgot my cream cheese for my bagel. On that day the restaurant was a mess, there was a giant puddle of spilled coffee at the drink station and I saw two managers standing around, chatting, while the staff frantically tried to deal with the morning rush.
I wrote Corner Bakery an email complaining about the mess and the lack of cream cheese (the worst part was that I didn't realize I had no cream cheese until I was sitting at my desk at work and it was too late to do anything). I NEVER got a response. Seriously?
Um, take your money elsewhere. Its unfortunate their food tastes so good, because its very overpriced and clearly the company doesn't really care what their loyal customers think. I used to stop there several times a week. Now, no thanks.
I'm amazed at how quickly they can burn through the breakfast and lunch rushes here, and the prices ain't too bad considering the location. Â Eating outside is relaxing, also surprising considering the location. Â I fueled up here before my bar exam, so if I fail, I'm rewriting this review and taking away all Corner Bakery's stars.
Review Source:I love their food, but the service leaves a lot to be desired at this location. The layout is confusing, which multiple places to queue, most of which are blocking some form of access (to the door, coffee machine, etc.). On one occasion, I reached the front of the queue, when the cashier disappeared for 5 minutes, only to reappear and open a different register, leaving me so bemused I walked out.
Still, it's one of the few options in the area, and the food has never disappointed. The new Smoked Turkey Cobb is a great sandwich. Turkey + egg + bacon + blue cheese. Mmm.
I hit up this Corner Bakery location about once every two weeks or so... it's become a staple on my weekday lunch list.
Yes, this location is almost always busy and it's hard to get a table at times, but with the warmer weather & the outdoor seating, it's much easier. They're fast, efficient, friendly, and I always enjoy my meal. The new salad combo thing is freaking awesome, and a bargain for what you get. Corner Bakery has tons of options, and this location prepares them all fantastically.
Restaurant review
Corner bakery hits the spot for breakfast, lunch, and early dinner. This is the perfect location situated right next to the hospital and northwestern outpatient clinics. Around lunch time it is bustling and the lines are very long. For the breakfast, I have no compalints when they cater morning breakfast. The granola and yogurt, cinnamon bagels are delectable and fresh. The coffee is always hot and bold flavor, however I have not tried it at the store itself. For dinner, the pannini are okay a bit small but the Chicken Pomodori on Sourdough is my favorite with a bag of the kettle crunch chips. All and all a great location when you are looking for sweets or a hot sandwich. I would have to agree with the previous reviewers that the staff here do not appear excited about their job and it brings down your experience here
Pro: excellent breakfast items, wide selection of bakery, salads, soups, and sandwich
Cons: long lines around lunch time, employees are not enthusiastic and detract from the experience
Hidden gem: sign up for the online e-club, lots of free coupons for coffee with breakfast items or sweets with sandwich purchase throughout the year
Came here to pick up a lunch to-go. Â Was a little confused at first b/c there's one side with a long line of customers waiting to order. Â But, you can also go to the other side (that had no line) and order there...that wasn't clear thought to a first-timer like me.
I ordered the turkey on harvest bread - a great basic, no frills sandwich. Â The bread was really good. Â But the roasted tomato basil soup I had was really delicious! Â It came with delicious crunchy croutons and a yummy breadstick.
I didn't order dessert, but boy did I want to pick up a cookie, or brownie, or bar...or all of it! Â It looked great and I'm sure they are delish.
Was conveniently located next to my hotel and lots of things on their menu look really good. Â If I get a chance, I'll try their honey banana oatmeal for bfast.
I was disappointed in my chopped salad. Â It wasn't tossed. Â It was kind of thrown together. Â I asked for it To Go. Â It was close to closing time, so maybe they had already put the ingredients away. Â On top of it the service wasn't really friendly.
I am putting the entire experience down to it was closing time (about 7:45pm). Â I will potentially try it again when it is in the middle of the day.
I used to work in a building that had a Corner Bakery inside. I got a little burnt out on Corner Bakery, especially after eating it all winter longr. However, I do have fond memories of the time there was a glitch in Weightwatcher's computer system and for a week they claimed Corner Bakery's sugar cookies were only 2 points. Â I had lots of tasty sugar cookies that week even if it didn't do much for my weight loss plan at the time.
These days I'm eating my fair share of cookies again, but this time my excuse is the baby in my stomach. Â My hubby and I have visited this Corner Bakery several times over the past few months during frequent visits to Prentice for newborn classes. Â Since turkey and many other sandwich options are out thanks to pregnancy, I've been opting for grilled cheese sandwiches. Â While it's certainly not the best grilled cheese I've ever had, it certainly hits the spot. And for dessert a sugar cookie...2 points, right?
I have mad love for the Corner Bakery chain, but this location is always disorganized and the service is never friendly. Being that this location is connected to a hospital, you would think that the employees would be a little nicer. On a recent visit after an employee had rolled her eyes at me because I didn't know what flavor muffins they carried, I actually had to say "I have more important things on my mind than the types of muffins you carry."
Review Source:We popped in for a quick breakfast at 10:00am on a weekday, and it was packed. It took a few circles to find a table, and when we did, the table busser promptly cleaned it.
In about five minutes, our food was delivered: an egg and bacon croissant sandwich, and a couple of scrambled eggs with toast and fruit.
My wife opted for a Coke, but one sip let her know she had more fizz than syrup, so she had to get a different drink. She also ordered her dish without tomatoes, but it was delivered chock full of them. Rather than return it, she just picked them out.
My eggs were fine. Meh. The toast was hardly toasted at all. Meh.
I can't vouch for the other items, but the only thing I'd try if I ever went back would be one of the fresh pastries. Their cooked breakfast items didn't impress at all for our first time here.
The verdict? I didn't hate it, but I was wonderfully underwhelmed.
"Aren't all Corner Bakery's the same?"
NO! Â This location is better. Â I promise. Â The Corner Bakery on St. Clair is always kept extremely clean, has fast service, and you never are told, "sorry, we are out of croutons and cranberries, you should order a different salad."
With outside seating in the heart of Streeterville one block from Michigan, this Corner Bakery is the perfect place to begin a day of shopping along Michigan Ave.
I haven't been to the Corner Bakery in a while. Been there, done that and just looking for different varieties of food when I'm in the area.
The menu selection is pretty much the same, with a few changes. It still has pretty decent and affordable desserts. I love the chocolate bunt cake and cookies are still great.
The lunch crowd was large but not as crazy packed as I remembered years past. I suppose it is showing its age and is no longer the go to restaurant it once was. Competition in the area must now be fierce.
Still, the sandwiches are still pretty good and the soup is not that bad either. Â It may be a chain but it is probably more affordable than many of the new restaurants in the area. Forget TGI Friday's - not on my life.
I actually really like Corner Bakery cause they have yummy chai, sandwiches, and kettle chips. Their pesto pasta's all right as well, but Panera is probably better when it comes to soups. Their vegetarian panini with artichoke is pretty great, as well as one or two other sandwiches I've tried. This place is good when you have a limited amount of time but aren't super rushed either. I like this place a little better than Panera, though I like the setting of Panera better.
Review Source:I really love the food at Corner Bakery. The soups are perfect on a cold winter day and the salads are perfect on a hot summer day. I do a combo when I just can't decide. I love the fresh and healthy ingredients they use. And watch out for the Cinnamon Creme Cake. It is highly addictive!
Three stars because the tables are always filthy and the workers are pretty brainless.
Sit on the patio during the hot summer months and grab a free tan!
Every morning while I was in Chicago I'd walk right out of my hotel and right into the Corner Bakery. While there isn't anything extremely awesome about this chain coffee shop/restaurant they managed to help me get going every morning which deserves at least 4 stars in my book.
I did try a banana bread muffin once that had whole slices of banana baked into it and was pretty tasty. Other than that it was strictly coffee for me. Satisfyingly caffeinated coffee at that.
The service here is iffy at best. They are almost always low/out of the coffee I want. They run out of cinnamon rolls by 8:30a.m. (before I get there). And the past five times I have been in, there has been an old guy who smells like urine. I'm not sure if he's homeless, but he's always there. It's hard buy food from a store that smells like piss. Don't get me wrong, I pee myself as much as I can, but I wouldn't expect to be able to hang out in a cafe without getting kicked out. Kick the guy out!
Review Source:Yep, it's a widely distributed chain. Â I do sorta like the concept though, order at the counter and have it delivered to your table. Â The prices are a little high, but not shocking.
The Cinnamon Cream Cake is to. die. for. Â The tomato basil soup is pretty dang good. Â The chop salad is one of those great big bacon and bleu cheese covered "salads". Â
The oatmeal (get all the fixins) is great. Â The morning scrambles are so so. Â
I'm not putting a ton of effort into this one because it's a chain. But I'm also anal retentive and must have it on my lunch list because I run there for food a few times a month (hey, it's across the durn street! a girl gets tired of scouting fresh new businesses occasionally). Â
The coffee is totally average but the black currant iced tea's pretty good.
I have a love/hate relationship with Corner Bakery. It may be just this particular Corner Bakery though. I don't know if I've been in many others. It's a total hit or miss when walking into this establishment. I used to never enjoy going on my lunch hour because of the employees. When you walk through the winding stantions and make it to the front, it feels like an assembly line as the cashiers holler "NEXT CUSTOMER STEP UP". Robots could do their job better. But really, I'm not giving this cafe enough credit. My last couple of experiences (the past 2 days in fact) have been pretty pleasant.
Before I forget to include this - their hazelnut coffee is the best coffee I have ever tasted.
It still baffles me how, when your food arrives, the servers don't bring you anything but your food...no napkins, no silverware (even having ordered soup). I've finally remembered to grab these items when getting my coffee before finding a table. Every time I go though, I see people get mildly frustrated having to get back up and retrieve these items so they can enjoy their food. The servers never offer to get customers silverware either. Also, the tables are usually pretty icky and have crumbs all over them.
I used to order the chicken pomodori. I can't bring myself to get it again after being served a cold, greasy ill-tasting one. I had the grilled ham and cheese today with a side of chicken noodle soup. It was quite tasty. I also had my usual hazelnut coffee and a water.
Yesterday, I witnessed a girl who, upon receiving her order, got up and yelled at the server saying she didn't want whatever kind of potatoes they brought her. The girl who brought her food asked her to come to the counter to fix the problem but this wasn't acceptable to the outraged patron. She said "No, stop talking to me and have a manager come to my table." I LOATHE this kind of customer in any situation. When the manager came over, the customer was a notch calmer and ended up getting a full refund for her meal. The manager handled this extremely well and professional. I was glad to see someone like her employed there. The staff at the registers needs some coaching from her (on how to be friendly!). She did such a good job of customer service, I wanted to go up and compliment her myself but refrained.
I'm not sure why I feel so passionate about this place. I really really want it to be better. It's so close to work and with some slight adjustments and a clean-sweep of hand picked new hires, this place just might be consistantly satisfying.
"This place is like Panera on steroids, but not as err... "ritzy" as Cosi. Â It is crazy busy in here, but I like it - fine selection of sandwiches and soups, and look at those desserts! Â
I like the idea that they use the number system to serve your food to you and they bus your tables too...something you don't get at either Panera or Cosi.
I had a turkey sandwich with avocado and a fresh lemonade and it was all very tasty and again, reasonably priced.
UPDATE 8.1.07:
The Rugelach is amazing. I'm a big fan. Other than that, I pretty much stay away from this place. Crowded at breakfast and lunch, and the food, as noted below, bores my tastebuds.
One thing I forgot to mention, if you can hold off until noon, muffins are Buy One, Get One after 12pm. Booya!

I don't know what they do to their cinnamon--but GEEZ! My knees start shaking when I think about anything of theirs with cinnamon. It's just too damn good. If you haven't already, you must try their Cinnamon Creme Cake and Cinnamon Crunch Muffin--but get their before 10am for this one because it's usually the first to go.
Their lunches are usually good, but their sandwiches get pretty old after a couple times. I much prefer the breakfasts...and the salads are delish, too.
