Went here for lunch today and this place sucked in every way possible.
Service - As I gazed at the menu, the woman at the counter said, "Can I help you "rapid-fire" style to me 5 times in 5 seconds until I said I needed a minute to consider. Â There was no one in line behind me. Â Then 2 women both simultaneously took my order with an attitude and both of them giggling with each other and whispering at me in such low voices that I had to ask them to repeat themselves several times. Â
Price - A tuna sandwich and a cup of soup came out to $12 and some change. Â EXTREMELY over priced for what I received.
Food - The tuna was not white albacore; definitely the cheap stuff and it tasted terrible. Â Mind you, I LOVE TUNA! Â The chicken noodle soup had 2 or 3 noodles and zero chicken. Â It was a cup of broth. Â Subway's chicken noodle soup is 10 times as good (and that's not saying much).
EVERYTHING ELSE - I had an urgent and unpleasant experience in the bathroom 1 hour after eating here. Â Also, although the seating area was indoors, 2 sparrows flew past my head as I ate. Â It was very random, kinda cool and a little nasty. Â Anyway, there's no reason for anyone to go here, ever.
Terrible experience. Don't waste your time. Rude people, long wait, bad incorrectly prepared food. NEVER AGAIN. The food was bad, not prepared correctly and the long wait is unacceptable. It's remarkable that this location is in business.
There were 5 people waiting for their orders and no one in line in front of me when I arrived. I waited 10 minutes for a cold sandwich during lunch. 10 MINUTES FOR A COLD SANDWICH!!! A wait that long is absolutely unacceptable. People who ordered before and after I did were asking where their food was. The staff acted as this is normal and acceptable for lunch time.
No one should their waste my time going to this Corner Bakery when there are faster, less expensive, healthier and much better tasting options around. By the time that my food came up, I could have walked over to Pastoral at the French Market and left with an amazing sandwich with FRESH ingredients for a dollar or two more.
The sandwich was not made right. I ordered a Chicken Pesto sandwich. It came with no pesto and instead it was swimming in a bland Italian dressing with a few brown basil leaves and 3 slices of tomato. It was horrible.
The woman that handed me my sandwich didn't apologize for the unacceptable wait or even say thank you.
I feel a 1-star "if I could give zero stars I would" Yelp! review is appropriate in this situation. I'm not even going to waste my time calling to complain or offer them a chance at redemption.
Service here is hit or miss. If you order anything larger than a soup, you'll probably have to wait while to get your food to go. Â
Corner bakery food menu is the same. Good sandwiches and soups and the best whoopie pie I've ever had in my life. Â I usually get a cup of soup so I don't have to wait terribly long for my food.
If you're looking for the coziness of the typical Corner Bakery you won't find it here. It's in a building with glass windows and it feels cold. On the flipside it's in a train station and right there when you get off your train.
I came with low expectations due to the reviews that indicated a long wait time. This location is a solid 3 stars. Lunch hour wasn't half bad- my order took 5-7 minutes. In comparison to Panera, Corner Bakery is not as tasty, slower and misses the mark on the "bakery" feel, but you know what? They give you a pickle wedge with your sandwich. And that deserves a kudos.
Review Source:This restaurant came in very handy, when I was in Chicago for a conference. I was able to stop here for breakfast then make a short trip to where I needed to be. I have never seen this chain until this week but they seem to be the Frick to Panera's Frack.
The staff wasn't exceptionally rude or dim, but perhaps in too much of a hurry at times. I know everyone wants to get where they want to go, however it's not the end of the world for me to take the time to put my money back in my wallet. If someone loses a train because I took ten extra seconds at the register, that's not my problem.
The food made for a fantastic breakfast! I enjoyed the bacon and cheddar panini on more than one occasion. It was typically at my table before I brought back my coffee. Granted the complexity and quality could be higher, but it was at an acceptable price and didn't taste awful. I can only expect so much out of a chain.
This Corner Bakery isn't the best Corner Bakery in the loop. I find the Corner Bakery on washington/wells to be superior in quality. Perhaps this Corner Bakery is too busy, but they do not put as much love in the food. The sandwiches aren't crafted carefully. They're just kinda thrown together. Anyways, I eat here on occasion. I normally order the DC chicken sandwich, or I get soup. The loaded baked potato and broccoli cheddar are great options on days when you're feeling like you're already fat so why not load on some more fat...very tasty. On days when you're being good, the chicken noodle soup and the tomato soup are good options. However, corner bakery really excels at the fatty dairy based soups, like the loaded baked potato and broccoli cheddar. They also have some nice lemon bars. On days when you just don't care if your clothes fit anymore, get a bowl of the loaded baked potato soup, a bag of chips, and a lemon bar. That's the trick.
Review Source:Corner Bakery, since it was sold by Lettuce Entertain You several years ago, has gone steadily downhill but this location just could be the worst of the worst. I stopped in for a late lunch (I don't know why!) and I don't know when I have ever encountered ruder service in my life. The woman behind the counter did not even say hi, she just looked at me, defiantly. She never said "thank you" when I paid, refused to answer my questions and acted the entire time as though she were doing me a favor. I will never, ever be back to any location after this experience and wish people would stop accepting this poor excuse for service anywhere, especially when the food quality is so subpar. Back to Jaffa Bakery, where I wish I would have gone today instead!
Review Source:This Corner Bakery blows my mind. Â I suppose since I have problems every time I go, I should go to another one, but alas-- it's closest, so I run over here on a quick lunch break. Â Every time I get my order to go, there is always something wrong. Â I know the lunch rush is busy, so I'm typically not that offended if I get the wrong soup (which is usually the issue).
Today, I ordered a 1/2 uptown turkey and a baked potato soup. Â When I got back to my desk and opened it up, the soup was right (for once), but the sandwich had one piece of turkey, the smallest slice of avocado I've ever seen, the bread was mushy, and there was no bacon. Â Ahem, bacon is one of the ingredients of the uptown turkey sandwich!
Oh how I've tried to overlook the mistakes.... I think this location is off of my lunch time spots for good.
This was the first place I ate at when I rolled into Chicago. I had checked into the Hilton (posh!) up the street and was told by the front desk that they didn't offer free wi-fi but to check at Corner Bakery up the street. I thought the service was great. The person helping was nice and actually smiled. Plus, they had baked goods and hot coffee. After driving half away across the country in two day, I was grateful. I even had breakfast here the next morning before continuing on my road trip to NYC.
Review Source:When I'm crabby coming off the train in the morning, the people working at Corner Bakery are always kind and courteous to me when I place my order. Â They are quick to fill my order, and make the line go quickly. Â The coffee is always as fresh as it can be, and I've always had my order come out correctly. Â
The people working here really help my morning be a little more pleasant.
Corner Bakery is a taste explosion with simplicity as it's main ingredient. Â I love the Corner Bakery sandwiches and salads. Â Sure, it can be busy during lunch hour chaos, but what place isn't? Â It's downtown Chicago! Â Home to my favorite sandwich ever: Ham on Pretzel Roll! Â It's the best. Â A simple ham with havarti cheese on pretzel bread. Â Their mixed green salad is small but delicious vinagrette dressing. Â I've waited for sandwiches before, but this place is worth it for me.
Review Source:One star for the one friendly person who took my order, and one star for the clean bathroom where I went while waiting a really long time for my food. Â
Now, like the other person to review this place has observed, it is a chain. However, it's an upscale chain, so presumably it isn't a total mecca of mediocrity. I was WRONG to presume anything about this place.
I was in the Loop waiting for a phone call before a morning meeting. I was starving. And, I was frustrated that all I could find to eat in my immediate vicinity was pastry type stuff. Except, I saw, Corner Bakery. Â Hmm, oh yeah, I can get scrambled eggs there. That is all I wanted.
As I said, the person who took my order was a nice person. Then the wait and wait and wait and wait. I didn't want the food by the time it came. And, the way it was served was classless. The four gigantic pieces of barely toasted rye bread were piled on top of the eggs and potatoes, with nowhere to put them. What did they expect, that I should pile the toast on the table while eating the eggs? Would a bread plate be too much to ask? How much bread do they think one guy can eat? And, did anyone around here ever wonder why it's called TOAST....because it is supposed to be TOASTED.
The eggs were bland. I looked around for salt and pepper. Nowhere to be found; not on the table; not on anyone else's table; not at the service station with the butter, jelly, forks, knives and napkins.
I had no time to ask for help because it was so late. So, I ate the bacon, a few bites of the tasteless eggs, and I was out of there.
As of recently Corner Bakery Cafe is now owned by California.- based Il Fornaio Corp. and New York City-based private-equity firm Bruckmann, Rosser, Sherrill & Co. LLC. In a recent article about Corner Bakery, the Vice President of food and beverage, Ric Scicchitano, claimed the recent ownership change has been all to the good, "...Corner Bakery Cafe was the small fish in a big pond. Now we are THE fish in the pond."
Note to owners: Â YOU REALLY DRAINED THE SWAMP WITH THIS PLACE WITH ALL THE SHUFFLING MCDONALD'S DROPOUTS WHO WORK HERE. And, oh yes, with this place, you guys are getting a bit too obvious about your magic combination of a smart theme with mediocre food.

I always wondered why people reviewed so many chain restaurants. Â Seriously, why are you reviewing Taco Bell? Â By design they are exactly the same! Â If you haven't read Fast Food Nation, please do.
Anyways, I'm making an exception here because the folks at this Corner Bakery are exceptionally friendly and provide great service. Â So I wanted to point out that beyond the expected excellent food (minus the pastas - stay away from those), the warm greetings are an added bonus and make the experience that much better. Â I'm there several times a week for a good reason. Â Hooray for service!
