I bought a yelp deal and used it here for 40 bucks off, It was far from my house so my expectations to be met were high. They had paper menus when for some reason did sit well with me, nor did the almost sports bar like mood the place gave. Only think that said fine Italian dining was the prices. We ordered some regular pasta with some chicken in it. Id go again ....if the food was free or another great deal with a least great date.
Review Source:A friend and mind decided to meet up for drinks and a bite to eat at this bar a few months back and we were both very disappointed with the whole experience. Â First of all, for a bar that advertises that they specialize in wine, failed to fulfill expectations in presenting any sort of a reputable selection. Â Most of the wines you can find at the local grocery store, not to mention, their wine rack was filled from top to bottom with Grey Goose vodka. Â The atmosphere reminded me of some trashy club. Â The ' euro club booty grind' music was cranked to loud, and there were a few guys at the bar wearing an unbuttoned popped collar shirt. Â There was only one waitress, who was obviously over worked for the few tables that were seated, and the hostess was too involved in her cell phone to help. Â Also, there was a noticeable absence of a bartender and the manager- dear god, THAT GUY, was a douche bag. Â He was hanging out with his 'bros' at a booth most of the time, and was rude when we asked to speak to a manager to see why our order was taking too long. Â The food was mediocre at best. Â I was really turned off by the whole experience and will not be going back.
Review Source:My wife and I went to this restaurant when it was called the Theatre Cafe and liked it for the Serbian dishes offered. Though under new management, some of the original menu remained, with off-the-menu Serbian offerings available.
The decor has changed-and is not reminiscent of the Art Deco feel my wife loved-but was pretty, nonetheless, if a tad hodge-podgy, with the different period of styles mixed together.
The waitress was very nice and accomodating, granting our wish to have the meat plate be just Serbian meats, leaving out the chicken and pork tenderloin. Â Though the one sausage was more Hungarian in flavor- as per the manager my wife spoke to on the phone-both it and the cevapcici were quite tasty, accompanied by a Greek-type salad and crusty bread. Very good!
I ordered a dirty martini, which came in a margarita glass. The reason I say this is that the "dirty" part of the martini sunk to the bottom of the margarita glass, thereby not blending in well with the rest of the drink. This is a minor complaint, however.
The music was not too loud, making conversation easy to have. Â
We definitely plan on going back, perhaps to have the pasta dish we had when it was the Theatre Cafe, and the cevapi plate.
Place is cozy and attractive. Staff is attentive but much of the food was mediocre to bad. The drinks and house salad were good but the "hamburger" is a defrosted mess and the items served bear little resemblance to the menu. Please hire a trained chef and focus on some good food to attract people to your lovely space
Review Source:And I thought I'd never get a chance to eat a meal in the middle of an empty Serbian Night club.
Another place I wanted to like. It's no secret that a place is struggling when they have a Yelp deal, http://Restaurant.com certificate deal, and a Groupon deal luring people in. That's about all they are doing though. Once you're lured in, everything else falls short. We were the only ones in the place, and it was Saturday night. The first thing we were told is that we can only sit in one of three booths because everything is reserved for 10pm. Kind of an odd thing to say in the middle of an empty restaurant to your only patrons at 8 pm. DeVine is a cute looking place inside, well, half of it. One half looks like a cozy living room type lounge setting with comfortable chairs and a fireplace. On the other side however they have mismatched booth/table combinations. Plush leather booths that sit you quite high and ill-fitting red, sparkly 50's diner type tables that are too low for the booths. We started with the calamari which was fine, but wasn't served with lemon. Both of us went with the turkey club, which I could have made better myself at home. The music started out fine, sounded like maybe a Passion Pit Pandora station, but then they dimmed the lights and started the dance music. Chairs were cleared from the main floor and club lights were switched on. Speakers were set up right next to our table and we knew it was our time to go. We did have a really good laugh about how incredibly awkward and hilarious it was to be eating a turkey sandwich in the middle of a completely empty Serbian night club. So thanks for the laughs! Hopefully this place can commit to one or the other, because trying to fuse the two clearly isn't working.
My roommate and I came here because there was a groupon $20 for $40 worth of food and drinks. First of all, the inside of this place is great; very cozy and inviting. When we got there, there was no one there. It was just the bartender and what seemed like a friend of hers hanging out at the bar. Five minutes into being seating she pumped on some polish club music or something. It basically sounded like the crap music they play on Jersey Shore. It was so obnoxious and we could barely hold a conversation without saying "wtf?" every time a new song came on. Second, the menu was lacking options - I got the Caesar Salad and my friend got the Cheese and Tomato Panini. Honestly my salad wasn't terrible, but it was $3 extra for the chicken, which they barely gave me any of. My roommates sandwich looked PATHETIC to say the least. It was wheat bread that was toasted with literally just a slice of american cheese and a tomato and that along with some terribly cooked fries. Please stay away from the panini options.
Just wait... it gets worse. This restaurant has the title "wine bar" in its name, yet they have about 10 options of wine...... what!?! this is a wine bar, give me some selection!!! I tried a chardonnay and a reisling, which were both luke warm temp. It was nasty. I then switched to a Merlot, which was not bad. The best part of the night was that after 5 glasses of wine, I FINALLY got a buzz.
I honestly have never rated a restaurant under 3 starts until now because I am not hard to please but what the hell kind of establishment is this? Pathetic.
We love Devine Restaurant & Wine Bar! The food is extraordinary, the staff is awesome, and the ambiance is cool (very modern/upscale with a stone fireplace). Thursday they now have Live Jazz, featuring my band The David Floodstrand Trio. The music starts at 7:00 pm and goes til 9:00. Make Thursdays your romantic date night! ; )
Review Source:Another one bites the dust.
I despise new management. A beautiful intimate bistro became a 1990's Czechoslovakian discotheque that served food. Conversation could not happen because of the blasting music.
Being under new management means the menu was truncated to about a fourth of what it used to be. Gone are the scintillating Eastern European dishes I loved, replaced with one generic version each of the following: pasta, lamb, chicken, pork, a steak and a burger. That's it. Everything we tried was incredibly salty.
The presentation was nice and the bread was excellent. We were urged to add chicken to the pasta for an extra $3 because the portions were small, and they were not kidding about that. Without the chicken, it would have been about half a bowl of chewy pasta for $11. Instead, it was 3/4ths of a bowl of fatty chicken and pasta for $14.
At least the wine list hadn't been hacked to death when the new management took over. We drowned our sorrows in a bottle of very nice pinot noir and ended the evening with a nutella crepe sugar rush for dessert.
We went there on a Thursday night right after Christmas. Â Started with the meat and cheese platter, which at $12 is a great deal. Â They also brought out bread with some delicious butter.
For dinner we had the chicken, pork tenderloin and the burger. Â The pork came out on a hot skillet (think fajitas w/o the tortillas). Â The chicken was fantastic. Â The burger was good, and came on a pretzel roll.
The bar seemed to be out of a few things - probably due to the fact we arrived just after Christmas. Â The martinis were great. Â My dad spilled his, and the wait-staff were quick to come over and clean up the mess - and gave my dad another martini at no charge.
The waitress helped my dad on with his coat and gave him a polite goodbye. Â Overall a very good experience.
BTW - on this particular Thursday they had a trio performing, who were good but quite loud for such a small restaurant.
I really wanted to like this place. My husband and I are always looking for new places to go to for date night. I made reservations based on a friends recommendation, it was in the area of where we were planning on being that night and from some reviews that I had read, it seemed like this was a great place to go. Someone compared it to a 5 star restaurant that you would find downtown. Hmm...that's a stretch. When I pulled up DeVine on yelp, there was even a yelp deal HELLO!!! that's hitting the lotto right there! Our waiter was nice enough, but when it came to paying with the yelp deal, he didn't want to honor it, called someone and spoke another language to them as he read them the deal off of my phone and said that his boss said that he could take it, but that he would have to charge 18% gratuity because of the deal. I told him that it doesn't say anything like that on the deal but he wasn't hearing it. I bartend and I am not a cheap tipper, I still gave him double that but it seemed ridiculous that he was making his own rules for the deal.
Review Source:Friendly service and warm ambiance. We came here for dinner last Thursday when it was cold and windy, walked in the fireplace was lit.....it was such a treat.
The food was good although we were a bit disappointed to see that they changed their menu taking off the Serbian dishes. The owner did let us order the "off the menu" Serbian dishes, so if that is what you desire coming here, just ask....they were more than happy to oblige. Everyone was thrilled with their dishes. Everyone in my party ordered Serbian dishes with the exception of the salmon which is on the menu....this was a tasty fish- I was pleasantly surprised as I have had many bad experiences ordering Salmon in restaurants. The meat & cheese appetizer plate was wonderful....a perfect combo of salty meats and creamy cheeses.
Check in on yelp if you come here, we got a free glass of wine!!
Yum, yum, yum, although entirely not what I expected. I live off of Irving Park, so I've driven by Devine a million times since its opening, and always thought it looked like a cute little place. So last week I was out with a friend and we decided to try it - I was under the impression, however, that it was an Italian restaurant - I don't know why - the name, the grapes on the sign, the fact that it's a wine bar - all made me think Italian, definitely not Serbian. Oh happy day! Any day I get a chance to eat cevapcici is a good day for me. We were the only ones in the restaurant except for a few guys who seemed to know the waitress and were probably Serbian themselves, which is always a good sign. It's beautifully decorated with huge comfy booths and marble table tops. The wine selection was great, the waitress was very friendly, and the food was delish. They had traditional Serbian dishes like the cevapcici, and stew, but they also had a variety of other things, like pesto chicken pasta (which they made vegetarian for my friend), bolognese, and much more. My meal was great, and was actually enough for two meals. We had a crepe for dessert, which was yummy as well - you can't go wrong when Nutella is involved. I hope this place can stay in business - it's in a kind of out of the way place and not really in any neighborhood per se - but with its reasonable prices and huge portions of great food it would be sad to see it go. Â
Oh, and, having spent 3 weeks in Croatia, which is very similar, I can safely say that the food is quite authentic.
Ziveli!
Meh.
I'm Serbian and wasn't too impressed. Â The only two items that I will ever crave are the hot bread and their take on a Serbian Salad -- Rustic = Cherry Tomato, Cuke, Onion, Feta, Oil. Â I could've stuck with those two.
We ordered a variety of plates to get a good idea of what their specialty really is, considering the menu is all over the place. We ordered the Mediterranean Shrimp (with risotto), the Mixed Meat Tray which includes some Serbian Meats including Cevapi -- a fan favorite. Â The "pepper steak", not steak - but pork, comes out in a sizzling skillet, & Grama got the Chicken Soup. Â We finished off with Crepes - an apricot, a strawberry and a Nutella.
The shrimp was decent, but the risotto was swimming in a vat of oil.
The mixed meat platter was mostly dry - the best part was the chicken. This was disappointing because like I said the Cevapi is a favorite amongst most Serbs and Americans, but not here. Blech.
The "Pepper Steak", but not steak, was ok -- good flavors, but a bit burned and charred from the skillet.
Chicken Soup - fab.
We wanted to order the Veal Soup (our favorite) -- they were out of it. Boo.
Crepes - decent, could've been thinner. Â The Nutella crepe was too rich. They fill it with Nutella then drizzle more chocolate and crushed biscuit all over the top.
Decor inside was comfortable, big booths, cozy - I can see this being a popular joint amongst young Serbs in the neighborhood to see the live bands and drink the night away. We sat outside on the sidewalk patio, that was lovely.
The waiter was the only server there that day (Sunday afternoon), so service was was super slow.
We've passed Devine quite a few times on the ride home from work and decided to stop and try something new. The inside is breathtaking, comfortable and the staff is very friendly. We were the only table for an early weekday dinner, so it felt a bit awkward. There was an awesome $6 pasta special, and the portions were generous. Otherwise it may have been a bit pricey for us. The Greek salad was delicious and fresh. We aren't wine people, but it looked like a nice selection. The cream pasta was very heavy, but very good. The rigatoni was very good!
