Very solid brunch. Not the best, but the unlimited mimosas are a nice touch.

It isn't awful.  I mean, its not.  Not really.  Not really awful.  Sorta, maybe?  But not really.  You know?

Beer selection is awful.  Service is decent, and they have a train that goes around and around the bar.  So, there's that.

Yup...beer and trains.  Tried the green fried tomatoes.  They weren't awful.  I mean...

Food is mediocre at the very best. Ribs were not even warm when served, potatoes were swimming in butter. Biscuits served before dinner were very good. Wine list extremely limited....

Back in the day, I was a Dixies regular. But then prices increased dramatically and I couldn't justify the expense.

In the past year I have returned. I am very impressed with the menu options and comfortable with the prices.

The soups are wonderful. Perfect for a fall or winter lunch.

The Shack is still one of the best sandwiches in town.

The monthly menu is typically great.

The Sunday brunch is really my favorite. Seriously. Jalapeno grits. Crab soup. Jambalaya. Shrimp. Waffles. Eggs. Potatoes. Hot biscuits with honey butter. Made to order eggs Benedict. And a whole bunch of other things. Not to mention the bottomless Mimosas.

A party of 10 celebrated a double-birthday at Dixie's one weekend, so I was too distracted to put together a thoughtful review. I had the following observations about Dixie's, though:

GREAT: The birthday cake slices they bring out are an event in themselves, the size of small houses with sparklers poked into the tops. Above all else, I don't regret bringing somebody here to celebrate their being one year closer to random hip-breaks and panic buttons around their necks.

GOOD: The Big Bayou Classic is a hot mess of a cheeseburger that you're liable to enjoy hooking up with. Two types of cheeses, bacon, and an egg? Didn't Biggie rap about something like that? It sounds like a great breakfast, but ...

UM ...: It advertises hot sauce but this burger was about as hot as Ja Rule's last single. Oh, you DO know what it was called? Sad. Anyway, at the end of the day, you can get a better cheeseburger for $14 without looking too hard.

BAD: On their menu, they invite you to try some of their hot sauces. I don't remember the exact language, but it's insinuated that you'll be trying some unique hot sauces and having a taste adventure! WOOHOO! no. When I asked for this, I was met by a basket of Tobasco sauces - you know, the same stuff I could have just gotten at Cub if I wanted an adventure that badly.

When that happened, Dixie's southern-charm wig got blown off and it was exposed as a fake-drawling poser. I give it three stars, though, because the birthday cake is truly a sight to be seen and the Bayou Classic is a fungible slab. Just don't buy it to eat something spicy.

I wanted to update my previous review after stopping by Dixies to try a few more menu items. The food was decent enough the first time--a Mother's Day excursion which saw me consume a good shrimp po' boy. Since this is a fairly unique niche in the Twin Cities food scene, I wanted to give it another go.

On this occasion, the server recommended the shrimp & grits ($17.95). I wanted to balance that with something safe so selected another po' boy--this time, the fried oysters. Unfortunately, it wasn't nearly as good as the shrimp po' boy, although the mashed potatoes I got as a side were well-executed. As for the shrimp & grits... Im not entirely sure how a Southern-themed restaurant can screw it up this badly. At that type of price point, I would expect an elevated dish with dynamite flavors while still staying true to its simplistic, comforting roots. The Andouille sausage created an oil slick over most of the plate that was so powerful and salty that it killed any of the subtle flavors the large shrimp had (which were good separately, consistent with what I found previously in the po' boy). The grits had good texture, but that, too, was over-powered. The side dish was a small bowl of collard greens which were so heavily salted they were impossible to finish.

I will say, though, that the server was nice and accommodating, much like the first time I dined here, and the speed at which we received our food was a slight improvement. I also appreciate that they have a fairly sizable parking lot--rare for Grand Ave. But, as Im sure most of us can agree, a dining experience is mostly about the food.

Overall, this was perhaps my most disappointing dining experience of 2013. For $40, I think there are numerous other places in the Twin Cities you can dine and have a high quality culinary experience. For example, you could drive just down the road to Brasa and have some of the best collard greens youve ever tasted.

One way or another it seems I find myself in Dixie's when visiting St. Paul. My experiences have mostly been terrific but have experienced hiccups at the door and once in a while in service. Food is typically good but I stick with standards such as Country Fried Steak, Coconut Shrimp, ribs and crab soup (never said my visits were designed to improve my health!). Of course I'd always recommend a local beer to complement the food (Summit is my favorite).

Stop in and enjoy the place with friends or business associates. I'll be back soon.

I am a St. Paul native and just returned after several years to visit friends.  How lucky for me they took me to DIXIES ON GRAND for lunch.  Everything was fabulous, including the crab soup, coconut shrimp and strawberry salad.  We could not have had a better waitress or service.  The overall experience was incredible and I cannot wait to return on a future trip to St. Paul !!

I think this place does Southern food very, very well and in a sophisticated atmosphere that you don't usually get with Southern food. I can say that pretty much anything that I have had on the menu has been very good, but I can say that most people from my northern homeland might be a little bit lost with this menu. Never fear, all you have to do is bring along a southern gentleman to translate. Or ask the waitstaff, you know, whatever. Dixie's has some of the best crab cakes I have ever tasted so I would definitely recommend getting those as either an appetizer or entree.

My friends and I stopped in at Dixie's on Grand after an afternoon of sledding at Como Park. We were chilled to the bone and were looking for a place with hot drinks that would warm us up. We were thrilled to find a seasonal drink menu on the table when we were seated!

We ordered the "Soul Fries" to nosh on, which were described as "crispy fries topped with Cheddar and bleu cheeses, bacon and ranch dressing." They weren't kidding about the cheese - these fries were seriously drenched in a layer of cheddar that was  quickly congealing as the dish cooled. They were still delicious, but I would have liked to see it come out of the kitchen a little hotter, while the cheese was still melt-y.

We also ordered ordered the "Cafe Du Monde Beignets" from the February monthly specials menu, and while they were not as good as the original (a bit chewier inside), I have yet to find ANY beignet outside of Louisiana that lives up to the original.  It was a treat enough to see these offered in the Twin Cities and we inhaled them.

After perusing the menu we see many things that we'd like to try, so I think Dixie's is on our list for a return visit - but we'll probably keep our eye on the tab because it seems that some of the menu items could add up quickly!

This used to be my birthday place every year!  It's been a while since I've been here but what better time to come back then for a Fat Tuesday celebration!

Even though the website didn't say anything about it which is a bit of a surprise, they did have a band and even a blues / little bit of Zydeco band and they were pretty good. The food was the same way, pretty good southern flair and not bad.

It's been so long I was expecting the same menu but is has changed and change is always good. The prices are a little on the high side but I must say the food was very good for what it was. I had the shrimp with grits.  The shrimp was pretty fresh, this is mn in Feb and the grits were great!  Tried the coconut shrimp as well and they were very good!

I've always loved the feel of this place but I need a regular time to try it again, see what it's like on a non-Fat Tuesday things. Good thing birthdays coming up!

This place considers itself a southern food restaurant and I can cook soul food and grew up on it and it is not traditional soul food.  I think they explore a few items they consider to be from the bayou or the south and try to fancy them up.  But the beauty of southern cuisine is you don't have to jack it up like that...I will say that the mac and cheese is very very good.  I find them to be a bit pretentious and overpriced.  It is a shame too because the twin cities needs some good old-fashioned southern food....

Stopped by for their  chicken wings and I love their soups and sandwiches as well.

This is all about the wings, but I gotta say... Dixies has some outstanding food especially their gumbo and crab soups! About that wing... Their southern sauce wings are awesome and I forgot to ask them to do extra crispy and I wouldn't have even had to do so, so that's a plus right there. A nice tangy flavor with just a lil' heat will have me going back for more that's for sure!

Just a visitor to St.Paul I went to Dixie's for brunch... A tad bit hungover on Sunday. I initially thought the all-you-can-drink mimosa/Buffett price was steep at about $26 per person; however, it was totally worth it. The southern-style brunch included made-to-order Benedicts & omelettes, seafood bisque soup that was heavy but to die for, amazing scallops potatoes, perfectly seasoned/poached salmon, spinach strawberry walnut blue cheese salad which was so refreshing.... That is just to name a few of my favorite items.

Based on other reviews, I can only assume Dixie's is one of those restaurants where you need to choose carefully to ensure not being disappointed.  So, let me help you out with that.

My Kentucky Bourbon pot roast served over mashed potatoes was stellar.  Perfectly cooked to melt in your mouth and so huge that I'll be eating the rest for lunch tomorrow.  Jambalaya?  My Pa loved it and he'll be eating the rest of his portion later this week.  Ma picked the seafood pot pie topped with crab cakes.  Rich, filling and comforting means she did her admirable best, but she also has a nice portion to finish because it was impossible to chow all that down in one sitting.

Side of southern green beans was ok.  Flavor good but dem beans were a bit mushy.
Nice wine selection, the root beer float kept the younguns happy.  Given portion sizes, I'm not complaining about the size of our bill.

Solid, reliable BBQ in the Twin Cities.  Best biscuits in Minnesota (so far).  And their meat platter is one of the best food deals you can find anywhere.

Ok, so Dixie's on Grand is not the most authentic, amazing, gotta-have-a-TV-special-about-it BBQ in the world.  But it ain't bad, either!  In fact, it's consistently very good and  covers a nice range of meats and styles that will satisfy just about any craving you've got, with their St. Louis-style ribs being particularly well-executed.

Once you place your order, the server will bring you a little basket of heaven, wrapped in a napkin.  I'm talking about their biscuits with home-made honey butter.  Hot, fresh, fluffy and tender, these biscuits are fantastic.  My mom makes amazing biscuits, but she dips hers in butter before baking them, which i think is kinda cheating, and hers are cut whereas these are drop, so I can't directly compare them.  I'm sure there's plenty of debate on the Internet about the comparative merits of drop versus cut biscuits, but no matter which way you shake it, these are magnificent.  You can also order them a la carte if you're just in for a drink and need something to soak up the booze.

Lastly, the meat platter.  For about $40, you can get enough food to serve about four starving, teenage lumberjacks or you can do what my wife and I do and order it for the two of us and not cook for an entire week.  It comes with four sides, plus the aforementioned biscuits, too.  Last time, it took two to-go boxes to haul away the goodies and a quick check on my kitchen scale showed an excess of 20 oz. just for the meat box.  I do recommend steering away from the mashed potatoes, as they don't really taste like much, but the fries are quite good.

As to one comment about the dry ribs, every now and then, something slips past the expediter.  It happens.  Just let the server know and they'll be happy to whisk you over a replacement.  We've been here many times, and only once did we get something that wasn't up to our expectations, and they quickly resolved the matter to our great satisfaction.  Go soon and bring your appetite.

Parking can sometimes be tricky in the lot that's about 10 spaces too small and the streets that are packed with local apartment dwellers' vehicles.  So make sure you leave enough time to find a space or bring a buddy who can jump out and get on the list or claim your reservation.

Used to be very good!  However this placed has slipped a lot.  It is dirty and the food is over priced.
I have to commend our waitress because she was very good, but it was like eating in any tgi Fridays.  The lights were bright and there was no music and all you could here was the clanking of plates.  The food was was okay but not worth the price.
Dixies used to be a very fun and energetic restaurant and now it is a place that probably won't be around in a couple of years.

Btw, I am guessing the hostess should not be walking around with a coke in their hands when they are seating people?  A little too much of the I don't care and nobody else does either attitude.

It's sad when the best thing you can say about a restaurant is that the waitress had a good personality. The second best thing was the nachos. That's never a good sign for a barbecue place.

Our group of eight dined there on a Thursday night and it was dead. Maybe that should have been a sign for us to go elsewhere. The menu sounded promising, but was executed poorly. We dined family style, ordering two orders of the BBQ feast sampler. Both the St. Louis style and baby back ribs were bone dry. They were overcooked and charred beyond  belief. The sampler included every type of chicken imaginable: BBQ chicken, grilled chicken, pulled chicken, and chicken chili. The pulled pork may have been the best item on the platter.

We tried all the sides and none were memorable, although the fries and mashed potatoes were decent.

Dessert was equally bad/forgettable. The chocolate cake was like something you would get from a grocery store, topped with way too much whipped cream. The pecan pie was lacking pecans and had a weird, dry pumpkin-pie texture. I can easily make a better pecan pie at home. At least the waitress provided some laughs and the company was outstanding.

This is my carb heaven. I order a small salad (to counter my poor eating) soul fries, biscuits and honey. Yum!

My kids get burgers and corn on the cob.
    Husband gets meat or fish.

What's strange though, is that almost our whole meal was happy hour food and drink and it came to $70. Yikes

Went here for brunch. I am giving this 2 stars instead of 1 because I think I am a bad brunch eater, so I am being generous here as I would much prefer to just order off the menu and get one item that I like, like an omelet. I did order an omelet and it was good, however I didn't get what I ordered on it.  In fact most of the omelet orders at the table were wrong. Service was sub par, if not bad.

The best thing I can say about this place was that I asked for hot sauce and it was the best array of hot sauce I've ever seen.

    Probably deserves just one star.

Would definetely eat here again, everything was delicious and atmosphere and service was great! I had the Cajun Chicken Sandwich and my Friend had the Cajun Pork Chop! I think anyone would like the sandwich that I had, highly recommend it! My Friend loved the porkchop and the extras that came with it!

This wasn't the xtreme spicy Cajun food although I'm a fan of that also but I know that makes going to a Southern Food or Cajun Place a hesitation for some! We also loved the aroma of the House Made BBQ Sauce that was being made at the time, I'm gonna have to try thier ribs next time that sauce smelled amazing!

We had my mother's 100th birthday celebration there and it was very near perfect. The food was excellent. We offered a choice of 4 entrees and charged our guests $20 a plate.
Including gratuity, taxes, staffing, setup and clean up we paid under $30 a head so the costs were in line with other less competent operations.

We had barbecue ribs that were lip smackin' good, well smoked, juicy and tender. We had 1/2 fried chicken that seemed to have just the right amount of spice. We also ordered the catfish which was possibly double breaded for a crispy outside and moist and flaky inside. The salad we offered was the Caesar with choice of shrimp or chicken. We had fresh fruit and biscuits for everyone and soft drinks. They cut and served the cake for us but allowed us to bring our own. The guestbook said 53 people but people were coming and going all night. We were demanding and they were accomodating. We were nervous and they were self assured. We expected a lot and got more than we expected.

A number of guests said: "I didn't know it was so nice in here!". Well, now ya know.

Great atmosphere where you will not go home hungry!  You can get a full, down home meal here or just hang out at the bar and have a few drinks.  I actually love the portobello mushroom sandwich - delicious! Great selection of beers too.  Just a fun place to go!
Parking can be difficult on the weekends but worth the walk if you have to park down the street a little.

    ICK, ICK, and ICK.

I hadn't been to Dixies in about 15 years, my pre New Mexico days and wow, have things changed. The menu hasn't changed but the quality of the food sure has! I really didn't want it to be this way and I even went here twice before writing a review in hopes that my second time around things would be better but unfortunately, not so....

Here goes: The first time, we had some type of crab cake dish which wasn't too bad if you could get past the temperature (barely hot). We also had the smoked chicken nachos as an appetizer and again, they were not hot and not as I remembered. Also eaten at our table was pecan chicken which was chicken breasts with a honey pecan sauce, served with a side. For 20 dollars, you would expect more than a few pieces of dried up chicken breast with a mound of sticky pecans on top...

So glad we had a living social certificate as I would have hated to pay regular price for this mess of a meal. The waitress was OK but not attentive enough, not refilling drinks, etc...

The second time we went the appetizer only route. We ordered some cornbread, chicken wings, the nachos again (had to try them again since they used to be so so good, my fave thing to eat there), and baked mushrooms. Oh...I almost forgot, it took the waitress about twenty minutes to even acknowledge us and get our drink order.

The mushrooms were not what the menu said they were, it looked like they opened up a few cans of mushrooms, threw a little cheese on top, MAYBE a little Marsala wine, and threw them in the oven. They were served with some baguette bread which was OK but only because I am sure they did not make that...

The nachos were horrid, so so sorry I tried them again. Even worse than the first time.

The chicken wings were good, thank goodness because that pretty much was all we could eat out of this mess. Oh, and the cornbread was good too. Thank goodness or I would give this place a one star. I think it might be another 15 years before I come back to Dixies again.

Went to Dixies because the wife had a coupon. Food was mediocre at best.  For an appetizer, we got fried green tomatoes and their "world famous" beef jerky.  The tomatoes seemed undercooked, and the jerky was dry and beyond tough, to the point of being leather-like.  I've gotten better beef jerky from the bins at convenience stores.

For the main course, I got a burger (overcooked) and she got some ribs (nothing to write home about).

Going there with a discount made things easier to swallow, but I don't know if I'd go back, even with another coupon.

Let me start off by saying, I really love brunch.
The idea that you can combine breakfast and lunch! Maybe I like Brinner better... but for now I will only comment on brunch.

My family thought it would be a nice treat to go out to Dixie's while we had some of our out of town cousins here, so Dixie's seemed like a cool place to try as we had all heard decently good things about it!
Welllll... we should have followed our instincts on the unknown and gotten Egg Mc'Muffins from McDonalds. Yeah... it was that bad.

My review begins in the parking lot where my vehicle was SLAMMED into by the same person who ended up waiting our table. Not awkward or anything. Like you just severely damaged the side of my car, but now you are serving me... just give up the table?!

    Onto the food.
    Effing. Sick.
The only redeeming thing about this brunch was that you got all you can drink Mimosa's to drown out the sour taste left in your mouth by the soggy food that has been left in a warmer for FAR too long.
Now, I have been to brunches, and I understand the importance of pre-cooking SOME of the food, but this was ridiculous. It was like someone had this bright idea that you can under cook the eggs and throw them in a warmer and it will somehow end up on the plate okay. Or in the case of the meats, you can burn the outside of it but leave the inside drippy and pinkish. (And I like my meat medium-rare, this was uncooked, salmonella pink).

I pretty much stocked up on all the shrimp and smoked salmon as I could because apparently they can still do this right... They don't touch it AT ALL. They take it out of the Sysco box it came in and put it out for consumption. Thank God.

Annnndddd onto the desserts. The part I had hoped would make up for the lackluster service, and the horrifying food. I was wrong again. The desserts were DRY. Like North Eastern Sahara dry. Any of the baked goods were burnt on the bottom and flavorless on the top, the pudding had a crust from being out too long, and the chocolate mouse in a champagne flute that they had out seemed like a decent concept if anyone in the back knew how to make it. I can stir together Cool Whip and Hershey's Chocolate Syrup myself thank you.

Needless to say, I will not be returning to this establishment... If I could have gotten my $20 back I would have, but I suppose the buzz I had when I left just meant that I had drank it rather than eating.

I hadn't been to Dixies in years when a couple of friends and I decided to go therer for dinner last night.  When you walk in you see a pretty nice looking restaurant, much nicer than i remembered it.  That's where the good part of the experience ended.

The food is fairly pricey, so two of us ordered BBQ Chicken sandwiches and one of my friends ordered a BBQ pork sandwich.  The sandwiches were 13 bucks so you'd expect something of fairly high standards.  I see a few reviews here commenting about the slow service, but the opposite was true in our case.  We got our food within like 5 minutes of ordering it.  To me that just screams heat lamps and microwaves.  Not something i should be paying 13 bucks for.

The food itself was mediocre at best, definitely overpriced.  Taht wasn't the bad part though.  The bad part was when i started eating my sandwich and found out we had all been served pork instead of two of getting the chicken we ordered.  Not a big deal for me.  But had i been Jewish or Muslim their careless error could have condemned me to spending an eternity in hell and damnation.  Good job Dixies!

Then we asked for our check and that's when the waitress decided it would be time to make some dumb smartass remarks.  We asked for three seperate checks even though we all got the same things and her remark to one of my friends was, "What, you don't know how to divide by three?"  When she came back she even continued her awful "joke" by commenting about my friend's phone,"See, that has a calculator on it, you could use that to figure out how to divide by 3."   It's one thing to make a light hearted joke, it's another to belittle your customers claiming they can't perform simple math.  Maybe her poor tip will get that through to her.

All in all, i don't see myself returning to Dixies for a long time, if ever; especially if I convert to Islam or Judaism.

I went to Dixie's on Grand for Sunday brunch, which was $19.95 for a buffet brunch and all-you-can-drink champagne and mimosas. First off, the ambiance of the place was very nice, service was fantastic, and we were lucky enough to get a really grand table with nicely upholstered chairs and a lazy susan...it felt like a Southern dining room...although the only Southern dining room I've ever seen is from Paula Deen's show. Thankfully, I was with a few Southerners who pointed out what Dixie's got right, and what staples seemed to be missing from the buffet menu.

Notably missing were fried green tomatoes; I've never had them, but I think they have it a la carte. What they did have were waffles, smoked sausage, bacon, jambalaya/beans/rice, bread pudding, and shrimp, among other things. Even though I don't have much experience with Southern cuisine, I can assess (just as a human being with tastebuds in general) that I've had better quality food. It wasn't bad or anything, but was it worth $20 for the brunch? Meh; maybe partially from a quantity stand point (which is why my dad had an inexplicable love for Hometown Buffet; "It's cheap and you get your fill!"). The desserts were OK, too; they had cheesecake which was good, but they ran out of the chocolate mousse during a key lunch hour! They did have a very tarty key lime pie, though.

So, I'm not sure if I'll make the trek back to St. Paul to give Dixie's a la carte menu a shot. I feel that buffet food has that notoriety of not being as good as a la carte dishes, but then again, for people like me who were introduced to Dixie's during brunch, it doesn't really help them to serve anything but good, "authentic" Southern comfort food.

I was looking for a decent restaurant to take my girl friend for her birthday. I happened to see Dixies while on Grand Ave. It looked like it had a nice atmosphere. I decided to check them out on the internet.
After reading the reviews and checking the menu. I decided to see for myself. I love southern food and wanted to see what they had to offer. I opted for the brunch.

We didn't need reservations. We walked in and was greeted by a pleasant and friendly host. We sat down to a booth that gave a lot of privacy. That was a plus. The waitress came right away and told us to help ourselves to the buffet and offered us a selection of drinks. She failed to mention the bottomless mimosa's and champagne.

I would say the food was all right. I would not consider it southern-style. There was eggs, scalloped potatoes. cornbread benedict or something. Then the fragrant but tasteless jambalaya. I would agree that it is compared to canned soup. The bacon was good, not to thin, not too thick, nice and crisp. The smoked sausage was more like hamburger patties with onions. Then some sort of chicken pieces with some crunchy batter. It was good at first but left an after taste that reminded me of liver. There were soggy salads, cold waffles and fruit. Tasteless shrimp and some varieties of desserts. I thought it was $14.99 but it was $19.99.

I am not going to promise that I would never go back. It is nothing that left an impression on my mind to make me want to go back any time soon.

I heard that they make fried green tomatoes. I am curious but I make them myself. I think I will stay home and cook my own "brunch". It was more like breakfast and trying hard to be a southern style restaurant but failed. If it was $14.99 I might return but for $20 bucks...NOT.

I am not too fond of the south, and being in Minneapolis, I want even less to do with the south than I ever have.  Sure, I appreciate a spicy bowl of gumbo here and there, but that's about it.  I don't know, I just don't have the same amount of appreciation for deep fried everything swimming in gravy as southern people do.  Call me close-minded (or open-arteryed), I just don't want to partake in that.

Also, at least a star and a half is docked for having karaoke, on a Thursday night.  I'd rather listen to head banging music while my arteries are getting clogged by whatever this dish is deep fried in, than listen (while sober) to people sing awful songs, that I've never even heard.

What this place also lacks is an identity.  Is it a restaurant?  Is it a bar?  Is it a karaoke bar/restaurant?  Who knows!  But someone decided to make it all those things.  And while  a toy train would usually add charm to any place, in this case it was just one more thing I hated.  And you know what?  I've been to restaurants in the south, and this place does not do a good job transforming people to the south.  It felt more like an TGI Fridays trying to act like a southern restaurant.

Sorry Charlie, but me no likey!

After having an end-of-year team banquet here 6 years ago I was confident I would never go back.  The food was awful - over fried, under spiced, and barely warm.  However, when a friend and I were looking for a place to have brunch in St. Paul this restaurant popped up on our radar.

With a hesitant heart I entered the Cajun-style restaurant but we were immediately greeted with a large smile and professional service from the host.  Getting better...

We were seated and within two minutes our server arrived and offered us champagne or mimosas (since it was a bottomless feature with our brunch) - okay Dixie's, now we're talkin.  Our server was attentive, professional, and polite and wasn't babysitting our table like some can when restaurants are not busy.

The food offered for brunch was satisfying, but mainly of the breakfast fare.  The only dish offered that could have parlayed as lunch was a soggy salad off to the side of the main plates.  Other than that, Dixie's offered fresh waffles, mini quiches, bacon, sausage, au gratin potatoes, and fruit.  There was also a chocolate fountain to dip strawberries in as well as other dessert pastries.  Brunch also offers an option of build-your-own omelets and jambalaya, to keep with the southern theme.

Brunch is $14.95 + tax and is worth the price for the amount and quality of food offered...not to mention bottomless mimosas!!

I have not been back for any other meals but will venture out to Dixie's after dark one of these nights to see if they have shaped up from back when.

Southern transplant here (south central Mississippi, to be exact, which means I know Southern as well as Cajun/Creole cuisines), so I may be unduly harsh.  As a general restaurant, I strongly disliked the place's food (though I did enjoy the atmosphere).  As a "Southern" restaurant, I absolutely detested the food.  1 star there.

Fried "green" tomatoes that are just greasy, battered, deep fried red tomato slices? A gumbo with a watery roux?  Fried "catfish" that, like the tomatoes, correctly used a cornmeal batter, but somehow managed to make it disgusting?

Atmosphere and decent service make me want to give second star, or rather a half star.

This is a very poor representation of even simple comfort food recipes of the South.  Not recommended unless you want to ruin the appeal of Southern cuisine for yourself.

If you want Southern cuisine, Cracker Barrel is far superior to this.  There are also some good Southern dishes at Brasa as well as at Whitey's Saloon (particularly the Mexican corn bread).  Shorty and Wags makes a few good Southern sides like fried okra and collard greens.

I LOVED this place. I was nervous about going because of the mixed reviews (including a comparison to Denny's?!?!!!) but the bf, who lived in the South for a while, really wanted to go, I gave in. So now I have learned an important lesson.

SO AMAZING. Even the next day, I was thinking about how amazing it was. The decor is really nice, well-lighted, nice ambiance. We got the fried green tomatoes to start, and it probably was suited to feed 4 people better than 2. We also got warm biscuits, which the boy rated up there with the genuine Southern biscuits. For our entrees we got Country Fried Steaks and the Bleu Cheese stuffed chicken. I guess the CFS was a little tough, but my chicken was great, and the mashed potatoes were delicious. Nice amount of gravy/sauce.

Everything arrived promptly, we were checked on often, and everything was as it should be. It was more expensive than we usually like to pay (it was a special occasion) but I didn't feel like it was over-priced. It actually came out to a lot less than I expected (~$60 for the two of us, drinks and tip included).

For some reason there was a bunch of little kids while we were there, and the music selection was strange. The only complaint from the once-southern-dwelling boy was that the sweet tea was not sweet enough. So all in all, a resounding success!

(I noticed they sold their beef jerky by the pound, but didn't try it - sounds interesting though!)

Not bad.  Loved the dancing on Friday night.  Food was average.  My wife's dish was very bland.  The Louisiana Gumbo was very good.  I had Seafood Pot Pie which was not bad.
Like the atmosphere and the decor.  Nice bar.

The start of the story - my husband's parents, sister, brother-in-law and niece were in town in October 2007 and we thought that since his mother is from Arkansas she'd get a kick out of Dixie's. Oh boy were we wrong.

We decided to order fried okra as an appetizer. It was so freakin' grody. The seven of us didn't finish an order and we were starving when we sat down.

I had the Fried Gulf Shrimp Po' Boy with a side of succotash. The sandwich didn't have any flavor (and I looove shrimp and Po' Boys) and the succotash tasted like an ashtray. Seriously. I am a smoker and it grossed me out, so just imagine if you didn't smoke!

My husband remembers ordering The Shack sandwich (Lean pulled pork simmered in Shack BBQ sauce, topped with cabbage and onion) with a side of succotash. He said that the sandwich only had a very sweet flavor and nothing else.

The other people in our group didn't comment AT ALL about the meal, bad or good. I am guessing that they didn't want to offend the in-laws that were paying for it.

My 3 year old niece (who has the appetite of a frat boy) wouldn't eat her chicken fingers. She took a bite of one and refused to eat more. What kid wouldn't eat deep fried chicken strips?!

    I won't go back. Ever.

Quit naming restaurants with enticing southern names and then serving bland Northern-ified food!  I ate breakfast at Dixies and was hoping for grits or at least good biscuits.  The biscuits are better at Magnolia's in St. Paul (also fake Southern but at least they have the excuse that they are on a Magnolia street).  I had an egg dish which was OK, but nothing to compete with Al's or the like.  I had a cornbread muffin that was nice and big, and probably the best thing on the table.  I ended up giving most of it to my kid who was unimpressed with their efforts at pancakes (not necessarily their fault, he is picky) My husband had the half Cajun which was comparable in quality and size to the same dish at the Dinkytowner.  It was also $3 more.

It is a very big restaurant and it was insanely busy so I didn't expect the service to be much and it wasn't.   Maybe lunch and dinner are better, but I don't have hopes of finding an authentic fried chicken or catfish after the disappointing breakfast offerings.  I think it's funny that the last few reviews have mostly been about the age of the customers who frequent this place. Perhaps if the food were a little better our reviewers wouldn't care so much about people watching?

    Three words:  biscuits with honey.

Sure it's kind of sterile as far as decor goes, but the food more than makes up for it.  I'd stay away on the weekends only because I loathe crowds and it seems like everyone and their grandma (literally!) packs up the SUV and drives in from the suburbs.

    My name's Emily
    I'm 30 and quite flirty
    Meet me at Dixies

(I have never understood why this place is always so busy.  The food is pretty good, and it's great for people watching, but I wouldn't call it anything special, personally.  It's also pretty funny how it seems to specifically attract the younger-middle aged crowd.)
