So, this place is closed. You wouldn't know that from their website, or from the http://restaurant.com coupons they continue to offer. Just bought one and not sure I'll ever be able to use it. Their voicemail indicates that they may be opening again. Under a different name? Who knows. It's a bit vague. Would've been great to know they were closed before we ventured out there in the torrential downpour.
Anyway, if you're planning on visiting this place, give them a call first.
After playing tennis, my hitting partner and I decided to eat here as our past experience was good. Unfortunately, the "Cyrus" (aka KOBE) burger we had was not the same burger we had months ago. It seems that they recently changed chefs and the menu was a bit revamped. I can't really fault the burger as being terrible; rather average, but don't stick a 16 USD price tag on the same burger I can get from the diner at 8 USD. Our bartenders/waitresses seemed a bit aloof as well. After telling the bartenders/waitresses our thoughts, it seemed that it was communicated to the chef, who came out and gave us nasty looks. My, how easily feelings are hurt. Don't mess with something if it is working.
Review Source:Come here for the decor, leave before you're tempted to order the lobster nachos.
The inside of Dragonfly is what you would imagine the martini bar at Hogwarts looks like. Â It's dark, cavernous with loud dance music at 5pm. Â There are all kinds of mixed drinks on the menu that seemed to spell "HANGOVER" in bright bold letters. Â I steered clear of all of those and ordered a beer. Â I also ordered the $17 lobster nachos to share with a friend and we were both disappointed. Â The nacho "cheese" was reminiscent of Texas queso (meaning velveeta in texture and appearance). Â As for the lobster, there wasn't much on the plate which was a disappointment given the price.
My husband and I took two friends from out of town to dinner here tonight. Â
The food was really good, but while our waitress was very nice she gave us very slow service. Â She tried to blame her slow service by saying it was busy, but she was only waiting on three tables in a already small section. Â We asked for bread twice, and the second time I had to get up out of my seat to ask her for the bread. Â We asked her twice to refill one of our diner's iced tea, which she never did. Â She also rarely came to our table to check on us. And I had to ask the bus boy for the bill. Â We watched the other waiters in our section and they visited their tables very often. Â I will say, however, our entrees did come out fast...so if the kitchen was on time and the bar wasn't crowded...where in the restaurant was it supposedly "busy?"
I understand that restaurants get busy, so if they truly were busy and not properly staffed then that is the manager's fault, not the waitstaff. Â With that said, I called the restaurant after coming home. Â I asked to speak to a manager about the service and the woman on the phone said she would be the one I would talk to but could she call me back because the restaurant was busy. Â Seriously? You can't spare 10 minutes for a call?
It's really a shame the service is sub-par here because the food is excellent, the decor is beautiful, and the jazz band is actually pretty good - and not too loud.
First impression is all about the decor: gothic church meets medieval imagery, with lots of dark corners. Inside the front door is an alcove for the band and the room is dominated by a large bar, surrounded by high top tables, then regular tables and booths, well separated. I didn't notice the downstairs until leaving, so I'm not sure what that is like. Staff was incredibly friendly and watched over our group of 8 nicely. We were eating late night after a concert on a Friday night and arrived unannounced, but the hostess found us a great table/booth and made sure that we fit in. In the meantime, we tried various draft beers (nice variety) and upgraded cocktails, like strawberry mojitos and house concoctions including muddled blood oranges and sour apples. The drinks were strong and good, and $10-12.
The Dragonfly claims to have jazz on the weekends, and there was a band playing, but it was kind of disappointing; covering Van Morrison songs isn't really jazz. The band did play quietly, though, which easily allowed conversation across a table of 8. So, I don't really get the point of the band. Maybe that is part of why the place was so empty on a Friday night. There were 3 groups about our size and maybe three tables of 2 or 3. All in all, the music was a minus and I can't imagine many being drawn to it. There wasn't any audience reaction to the end of songs and I really struggled to remember the one song that I mentioned, but that was because it was so dreadful.
The food was mixed, as well. The small plates concept is fun and particularly fun for a large group. Many of the small plates were expensive, though. The balance between serving size (generally too large for a small plate) and price needs some attention. It would be easy to order 2 plates for $30, costing too much and providing too much food. Cut down portions and cut the price, is my rhyming advice. Also, the menu is confusing. Were the "favorites" still small dishes?
The personal pizza "favorite" included 6 slices, and was way too big for personal. That usually isn't a problem for me, but the pizza was kind of meh. The eggplant fries were terrific, though and the salads were delicious. The accompanying hangar steak was disappointing, though, so a mixed verdict for that. I'd need some suggestions on what to order, since I really wouldn't order anything I tasted again, except maybe the fries. All in all, the food was a little like the music, bland.
I really wanted to like the Dragonfly and went with a group looking to have a good time, but would probably only go back to enjoy the bar and the decor. I certainly would chose a night without the "band." Â Now, I'm rhyming paragraphs!
This lounge is SO cool. It has such an atmosphere that will no doubt make you feel as if you're in another place in the world entirely. Very renaissance/gothic meets...hunchback of notre dame ? hah. (you'll hopefully understand what I mean when you go in). I gave it 4 stars because I only went in for one drink and it wasn't even a house-cocktail or anything. I just got a Stella. So the next time I'm in (which will happen, and it'll happen soon) I'll be ordering something to eat whether its an entree or dessert and an actual cocktail. I'm sure it'll be great.
HOWEVER- despite the great theme and vibe and overall beauty of this lounge (plus super comfortable seating) I, along with the rest of my group, was not in the slightest crazy about our waiter. He looked at us like we deserved to walk the plank or public humiliation when we came in for only 1 drink each and not ordering food- I understand he living is to make money as a waiter- but we were a group of 6 and wanted to sit together and not in a line at the bar. Which is not a crime..so that waiter was basically a creep-loser that I could very well do without forever- but surely I'll be back and I'm sure i'll have another great time (as long as that punk isn't our waiter)
sorry ole chap. shouldve smiled or something..
Oh ! as far as music- they had a lovely live band playing but I guess took a break every once in a while and the lounge awkwardly played house music in the mean time ? they should avoid that if they are trying to present a certain tone to the evening..hah we laughed about it.
This is one of my favorite bars in Stamford. They have a great beer selection and the decor is awesome. We asked a bartender, and she said that the cost of renovations was over $2 Million and that everything was reclaimed from old churches. It is really cool inside and the attention to detail is great. Cool place to have some drinks.
Review Source:Just came back from the dragonfly lounge...
Must say it was an interesting experience.
First off, they had the Ithaca flower power IPA on tap...which is a good sign, so already a plus. (4/5)
The live "jazz" band? They had a guitar, bass and drums. NO vocals. That does not make for a live band...rather background music...still better than nothin (3/5)
Ambiance: Gothic, nice lighting, real potential to be a hip spot...except there are a bunch of 50 year olds tryin to get with 30 year olds...and the pocket groups of 20 year old frat boys loungin around crowding the entrance....truly a mixed crowd...interesting scene (4/5)
Service: Apparently, our waitress (early 20's) misunderstood our queries of "how is this dish" as "I want to order this dish." So we ended with 6 small plate dishes rather than the 4-5 we intended. No worries...we were famished and finished off nearly everything. Â The portions are decent but not enormous. Also when they saw my wife spill water on herself, they immediately attended to her and resolved the issue. (4/5)
Now onto the food:
1. Sautéed Beef: highly recommended by other Yelpers. Highly disappointed. Beef was tough, prob stew meat, veggies ok, sauce weak. (2/5)
2. Chicken satay: chicken was tough, sauce accompaniment decent. Â Nothing special. (3/5)
3. General tso's calamari: one of those dishes that's not THAT good but u keep reaching for cuz it's sweet and fried. Â Would be a decent party dish (3/5)
4. Herb Roasted Eggplant: Great dish. Eggplant and reggiano combo worked well without being too heavy and was truly a success. (4/5)
5. Spinach Noodles: Pretty good. Manchego cream sauce made it yummy. (4/5)
6. Smoked Gouda Ravioli: Best dish of the night. Gouda cheese and garlic cream sauce? That's decadence right there. (4/5)
Bottom line: The food overall is prob 3 to 3.5/5. Â But the vibe, service and beer selection on tap bump it up to a 4/5 on Yelp.
We will probably go back.
So I ate here. Â WTF? Â It's awesome! Â How did I not know? Â This place makes me forget I'm in Stamford. Â No offense Stamford. Â :-)
I had (and don't judge, this wasn't all in one seating):
Kobe beef kabobs - meh. Â Lacked any real flavor, it was odd.
chicken satay - sooo moist and juicy, perfectly done.
Sauteed beef - I'm not kidding when I say I could eat this all day. Â Every day. Â Just get it. Â Seriously. Â I'm done talking about it.
Tilapia ceviche - ridiculously good, light and refreshing.
Green pea hummus - love the new take on hummus. Â If you don't like peas...don't eat this.
Herb roasted eggplant - This and the sauteed beef....heaven. Â Perfectly seasoned.
crab n' veggie pizza - umm...i wasn't looking forward to it when we ordered it but it surprised me. Â The bar was pretty low though. Â I enjoyed it but wouldn't get it again.
Overall, love the vibe and now I can say the food kicks ass too.
I love the ambiance here for a date.
They used to make the best pom martini, but it depends on the bartender you get.
I only come here for one thing and one thing only (besides, their jazz - very nice). Â Everyone I've brought here agrees they absolutely love it.
That one thing is General Tso's calamari. Â Delish!
This place is amazing. Â The gothic decor immediately sets the mood and makes you feel like you're in some kind of swanky vampire nest. Â The food and the drinks were awesome and really reasonably priced. Â I really like how their online menu lists descriptions of things and the prices (including the drink prices!), so you can plan out what you might want to order ahead of time. Â I had the "Mortal Stain", and a Shirazi salad with grilled chicken. Yum. I also tried some of my friend's ravioli and it was delicious. Â Their food portions are pretty small but really well-priced and surprisingly filling. Â This is the perfect place to go if you're in the mood for a few drinks and tapas/appetizers.
Review Source:This place is sweet. Went here for the first time tonight, which is sad to say as I've been a Stamford native for quite some time now. Courteous staff, great decor, and a damn-good-live-band-that-plays-mostly-jazz makes this place 4-star worthy.
Since I only went here for drinks (G&T and a Stella), I can't give it a complete evaluation, however I enjoyed my time here as I injured my liver for yet another night. Can get a bit loud when it's busy, but that's expected of all bars. Also off the "main" strip of bars in stamford, but only by about a 3 min walk. Good though. I don't want all of Stamford piling into Dragonfly while I'm trying to enjoy my cocktail in a plush red velvet seat. No thank you. This is more of a place to "chill" rather than to get rowdy and "super crunk." As you might be able to tell while I write this review I am still a little buzzed, but I was inspired enough to sit down at my computer and write it, instead of passing out in The World's Comfiest Bed.
Visit Dragonfly. You won't regret it. Reasonably priced, and with just the right atmosphere. At first I thought it was a shame people didn't frequent it more often, but as I write this review I'm starting to think that I should keep it as my own secret...
Cool indoor decor, although I only saw it for a moment then went outdoors (outdoor seating, big plus.) We had tapas: kobe beef skewers, chicken satay, lobster ravioli and traditional fried calamari. Everything was good, all exceeding my expectations.
Dragonfly is downtown, but a bit further off the busy area of Summer St. that I don't think it'll get overcrowded. It'd be a nice place to go for a "chill" evening, light meal and some drinks.
Not overly pricey, but did end up running us about $40-45 for four small plates, so that'd be something some might want to consider.
I have been to DragonFly about 5 or 6 times and each time is a wonderful experience. The restaurant seems to be somewhat unknown and it's a shame more people are not aware of it, however my most recent expereince was the busiest I've seen it been so hopefully word is spreading about this fantastic restaurant.
One of the highlights is the amazing Jazz band that plays on Friday and Saturday nights. They add so much to the dining experience. I recently was there with a group of 5. The ambiance is an old english/irish type castle and is quite rustic and beautiful. The service was quite attentive and polite. We ordered several American "small plates" which were plentiful and quite satisfying. You can go from exotic, to a burger and fries and the pricetags are not steep at all.
I encourage everyone to try this incredible restaurant.
Me and my fiance were up in Stamford to see his co-workers play, so we yelped this place and it looked interesting so we decided to check it out.
We arrived around 6 and were just planning on having some drinks and tapas at the bar.
Their happy hour sucks.. just bottles of shitty beer (no drafts), house wine and a cosmo. Â Boo. at least include drafts of some decent stuff, come on.
Huge cocktail list. I had the cosmo (typical) and the "lap of luxury" (nasty). Â They had a nice champagne for $7 which was very good.
We got the tuna tacos (very good), steak cube thing (not terrible, wouldn't recommend though) and the sweet potato fries (awesome).
Someone on here said the food was adventurous.. it's not.. it's significantly less interesting and adventurous than pretty much any tapas bar I've ever been to.
All in all.. really nice atmosphere, decent food, lackluster cocktails, very expensive for what you're getting, shitty happy hour.
It reminds me of place in Huntington, NY called Honu.. except honu is about 700 times better.
the end.
I went with my fiancee (she reviewed it below). I found it to be decently worse than she did.
First, the service. We went in at around 5:15 PM on a Friday. No one else was in the place (I guess it isn't much of an after work spot). There were a couple servers, a bartender, and someone who I am assuming is the manager. With all those people, I had to still try to catch someone's eye in order to get them to come over to us. They seemed more interested in hanging out off to the side together than actually serving. It was annoying. When we did get service, it was amiable enough, though not overly helpful. She listed off the happy hour specials (4 dollar domestics, cheap cosmos and house wine), quickly and walked away to let us decide. What does 4 dollar domestics mean? Apparently bottles of bud, bud light, michelob ultra and other such crap. Do they realize that those taps and bottles of smuttynose come from the US too? Apparently not.
This is a cocktail place clearly, and their cocktails left something to be desired. Why have such a crappy happy hour that doesn't let people explore the numerous drinks you list? The ones we did have were eh. She had a Lap of Luxury, which was not very good (champagne, cognac, grand marnier?, and a sugar cube, in a tall glass on the rocks). Either the champagne was flat or everything else overtook it, but there was no fizz. The cognac overpowered everything, and the sugar cube settled at the bottom not mixing into the drink. A peach mojito was passable, as was the cosmo she also had. Beer selection is pretty good (Delerium on tap [poor pour though] and bottles of La Chouffe).
Food was okay. Tuna tacos were pretty good, sweet potato fries we very good, sauteed beef was way overcooked and dry (the sauce saved it) and ultimately mediocre.
Decor was ok, I get what they are going for, but I don't think they fully pull it off. Oh, and the oversized fake bottles of kettle one and stella glasses are weird (I never got the appeal of these, why include them in a bar going for a semi-gothic architecture them?).
Price wasn't cheap. Not horrible, but I would expect much better for what I paid.
Wow that was long. I wouldn't go back here, and I wouldn't recommend it to people. It's a shame, I had decently high hopes, I just feel like pretty much every aspect of the place is mediocre.
TL;DR: Good beer selection, large but ultimately meh cocktails, food is decently edible, overall overpriced. Pass.
The decor here is a bit weird, its very English manor / Gothic church. I don't think the decor compliments the atmosphere they are trying to create here with their menu of specialty drinks. They do have some well priced martinis that range from $8 - $10 depending on if its a specialty drink or not. They have a live jazz band that plays through out the night. a bit slow paced for my taste.
Review Source:Went with my girlfriend for a light late evening meal and was not disappointed. Â The drinks, particularly the martinis, were very creative and strong as well. Â I cannot comment on the entrees but their tapas menu was great. Â Huge flavors, fun presentation, satisfying portions. Â
The service was fine, though nothing fantastic or memorable. Â The interior was quite interesting as well- a strange mish-mash of velvet curtains, neoclassical architecture (or so my girlfriend told me, I'm not the one to ask!), and rainbow stage lighting... all accompanied by a very enjoyable live jazz trio. Â I'd definitely recommend making a trip!
Went for dinner and drinks on a weeknight... it was 8pm so I guess we missed the happy hour crowd. Â I wanted to try their mojitos but they were out of mint (...ook i guess?) so I got sangria instead. Â That was no big deal, but you would think they would knock the price down since I didn't get what I wanted, right? But nooo, still $10. Â Grr. Â The sangria was a good sized portion in a full glass though, so that was nice. Â I wasn't that hungry so I ordered one of the small plates, the gouda cheese ravioli. Â Really yummy! Â But.... it was $9... there were THREE raviolis... not the big ones either, but medium sized ones. Â wtf really? Â So I don't think the prices for the food were reasonable. Â My friends got salads and said those were good and reasonably priced. Â Next time I go I might just stick to cocktails, or at least be mentally prepared to pay a lot for a little... Â Another good option might be getting 5 of the small plates for $45 and splitting with friends.
Inside looks cool though... gothic decor sounds like it would be cheesy, but it feels really cozy.
I like that this bar is called Dragonfly. It's nice to sit at a bar with a buddy or at one of the rounded booths with a big group of friends. Service is decent, bartenders are always friendly...you think you are going to have a relaxed night when you get there...always turns out into something altogether! Always fun. Unfortunately not super close to the other classy Stamford haunts, such as the Dirty Turtle and Hula, but doable for sure. I'd say this is a post pre-game, pre-get crazy place.
Review Source:Two of my gf's and I went out to Dragonfly one Thursday night and we all had a drunken merrily fun time. Â There was some kind of UConn Alum party the first 30 minutes we were there so the place got really loud. Â When everyone left, this immaculate-goth-like place was nothing but peaceful. Â The cocktail menu was phenomenal. Â I think we ordered every single martini on the menu. Â My fave was the Lychee Martini! Â The menu is really inovative and fun. Â Must try the Eggplant Frites, fried eggplant tossed with shaved grana padano served with smoked tomato aioli. Â
There's a lot of great joints in Stamford, this place is on the top of my list.
Unfortunately, Dragonfly is considered by most as an off-the-beaten-path bar.
But it's only a hop/skip/jump down the road from 'downtown'.
The interior is decorated with lots red suede fabric and dark cherry oak accents.
Upstairs is mostly for dining [though there is a large bar crowd]--they offer a tapas menu with a funky spin on classic American dishes.
Downstairs houses another bar that's mostly for "dancing" and whatnot. They also have outdoor patio seating.
This place is good for groups and it's also a good choice for a more upscale bar experience.
This is one my favorite bars. Â It has everything. Â Great decor and ambiance. Â A bit of a gothic feel to it but it's not overwhelming to the point you can't enjoy company and a drink. Â It has some great drinks, like the purple haze which are not common at other bars. Â It also has food, some unique options a little better than chicken wings. Â The prices are reasonable and it's never crowded. Â They sometimes have live music too.
Review Source:Dragonfly is a relatively new bar/lounge that is worth going to. Â It has a "gothic" motif that kind of reminded of a Disneyland ride (sorry, just being honest... it's not as bad as that sounds). Â I have been there twice and enjoyed it both times. Â In particular, I really enjoyed the live music. Â The lounge wasn't crowded (kinda nice in my opinion) but had enough people inside to give it a "cool factor." Â The staff was friendly and the service was quick.
Dragonfly is a good place for a first date (or any date) where you can have fun and hear what the other person is saying. Â You can also order food to snack on, such as lobster nachos, Swedish meatballs, short ribs, Â and spicy tuna sushi rolls. Â Large downstairs area to host larger parties as well.
Overall it's worth checking out... you'll probably be pleasantly surprised!
