Well we came to the Dubh Linn Pub hoping to sample some of their beers, but on the day we visited, their tap was broken -- we could've ordered other more commercial beers, but their own house brews were inaccessible. Talk about a disappointment. So unfortunately, I can't tell you anything about the beer here.
We were starving, so we decided to stay and eat. It was average. I ordered a cheeseburger. Safe option, right? It kind of irked me that I was not asked at all how I wanted my burger cooked. Sorry, but unless you're doing fast food, a restaurant should ask how you want your burger cooked. Came out medium well, no pink in the center. I do like the crusty exterior that was developed -- kind of reminded me of a Culver's Butterburger, just thicker. It was OK. The fries that came with it were not great -- they were the kind of fries that are coated in some kind of think powder or batter before they are fried. Not necessary and actually detracting from the fries because you can't really taste the potato as much.
My husband ordered a salad, which he said was fine. As we didn't order corned beef or anything specifically Irish, I can't really speak to their authenticity as an Irish pub. We were underwhelmed. And even though it was completely dead when we visited, I would say that our waitress only did an OK job of keeping tabs on us... she clearly did not want to be there and it showed.
One more note, the stalls in the bathrooms are really narrow, which means that if you're a girl and you're sitting down on the toilet, your leg actually bumps into the toilet paper holder and you have to kind of sit at an angle. Weird. But on the plus side (depending on your preference), the bathroom does smell a lot like corned beef.
Big and spacious inside, feels a little cavernous even when full. Ordered shepherd's pie and some Irish stew and it was pretty passable. Hard to muck up hearty Irish food, but this was certainly better than expected for a place that's essentially a bar. Good tap selection, and like many places in Duluth has jumped on the microbrewery bandwagon. A sampler flight was reasonably priced. Some of their beers are okay, others I wouldn't drink again. Spare the few extra bucks and try all of them before deciding.
Review Source:This was my favorite restaurant we visited during our stay. Â The Irish car bombs here were amazing, as was our food. Â The service was great - our waiter was attentive and prompt. I had the shrimp and chips and my boyfriend had the Jalapeno burger. Â Packed with flavor and panache, I would recommend a visit to this pub if you find yourself in downtown Duluth,
Review Source:Business brought me to Duluth the other week and while I was wandering around the downtown area in between meetings I saw a banner for "15 minute lunch guaranteed or it's free". I thought perfect, I'm hungry and in a hurry, so I stopped in to check it out. I was quickly greeted by a friendly server who sat me in a booth. I asked about the 15 minute lunch that I read about outside she informed me that sure enough, 15 minutes or its free. Â I ordered a sandwich and fries. Â It was promptly brought out in 10 minutes (I timed it just to be sure ;) ) Â The sandwich was nice and the malt vinegar on the table was nice to see. Quite impressed with the overall experience and it's hard to complain about a lunch served in less than 15 minutes for under fifteen bucks. Cudos to Dubh Linn Pub!
Review Source:I wish I could say they have a wide selection of drinks, good food, or excellent service. But, the truth of the matter is we never even got that far. We walked in around 7pm on a Saturday night, the place was dead and we were seated in a corner for drinks and dinner. The hostess gave us menus (no drink list) and said our server would be with us shortly. So we waited. There was a server who came and chatted with a table a few yards away, twice! And they still didn't come over. We probably waited 15-20 minutes without even getting a glass of water. So we left. The chatty server from the other table said "Thanks, have a great night." Yea yea, buddy, no thanks to you.
Review Source:Horrible service and false advertising, they offer a free lunch if you dont get itin 15 minutes, the first time i didnt get my lunch in 15 minutes they said it was because more than 2 people at my table ordered Panini's, The next time it was because she told me the timer doesnt actually start until the cook sees the ticket, the last time I was told that the offer was only Mon - Thurs allthought the advertisment tent was on the table with nothing about mon - thurs....The last time I asked about the free lunch the manager came over to my table and began to yell at me telling me he has explained these rules before. I had to tell him to get out of my face.
Review Source:Had a great time here on a Saturday night not long ago.
We didn't stay for the comedy show, but peeked in the room where it was going to be held. Â Small! Â Cozy and intimate. Â Maybe too much so? Â
The room was being used for a private party of giant rugby players before the comedy show. Â As their time in the room ended they emptied out into the pub changing the atmosphere... Â It was a party!
We did try the food along with the maple ale. Â We loved everything! Â The food was better than I expected for a bar type place. Â The burgers seem to be their specialty with different topping choices. Â The neat thing for a non cow eater like me is that you can get all the same toppings on a house made veggie burger! Â Sweet! Â I had the spinach and artichoke topping on my veg burger and the fries. Â The fries were soooooo good. Â Beer battered and seasoned. Â Husbo had the Logan (pork, ham, & mozz chez) with the potato salad. Â The potato salad had a great dill dressing on it and tasted so fresh. Â Wow!
I would visit this pub again to play some pool or darts next time and maybe take in the comedy show. Â Fun place!
Always loved Dubh Linn Pub. I had started going there when they first opened years ago and made many great friendships with the staff and owners of the pub. My buddy and I were normal regulars here for years and still get a free drink or two here and there if we stop in. Always nice to walk in somewhere and have people happy to see you. If i ever needed anything or wanted to use the back room for something they were always happy to help me out. I don't get here as much anymore because i moved to superior years ago and don't live as close as i used to. A lot of the staff has since changed but i still love stopping in and thinking about all the great times i've had there over the years. It's also the place i met my soon to be wife.
Review Source:The service was great. The beers were terrific. We didn't have any food, but it looked like everyone was enjoying what they ordered.
Why only three stars? When I arrived, there was a person who was poorly dressed, staring at us from many places around the bar. This person had no beverages, no food and would walk up to people and chat with them out of the blue. This person required the attention of numerous employees and seemed to intimidate new customers with glaring and rude looks. This person spent time walking about and was more focused on his cell phone than the surroundings (which could have used attention; the door frames could use a coat of paint, the shuffleboard tables need to be balanced, the restroom stalls required attention, etc). We addressed our concern that this person was a derelict off the street, but unfortunately we learned that this was the owner. While we did enjoy the place, the owner was unprofessional and self absorbed. While talking with my wife, the word creepy came out a few times. I noticed the owner sprawled out in booths and on couches (this prevented many a customer without a seat or service). And this lack of concern by the owner forced his staff to make up excuses for this poor and unprofessional behavior. I also noticed that there were as many managers as servers. Really?
I would have no problem with rating this bar higher, but when the owner could care less about how he wants to be perceived and is that self absorbed, sorry but that's just sad. But since it is Duluth, I guess this is something that he can get away with because the locals find this acceptable. Oh well.
I would be happy to raise this to a full five stars if the owner would just stay out of sight in a back room and let his staff do their job. I believe it is an enjoyable place to visit, but the one thing that needs improvement is the owner's behavior and how he wants to be portrayed.
I will encourage you to visit and enjoy yourselves at this fine establishment. But as you have read, beware of the poorly and unprofessional person, who is the owner.
This is a 3 star rating only because I did not try any desserts. Normally a dessert makes / breaks a rating for me, but this one falls in the neutral zone although could well be higher on another visit.
Being a Irish pub, I tried the local microbrew. This one was called Double Hops IPA. Made by the pub themselves. Very good. And while I'm not a beer drinker or claim expertise, this beer was not bitter, but had a pleasant, earthy flavor. And it was cold!
I had the Shepard's pie. Which was spiced minced lamb topped with a heaping serving of mashed potatoes (insert Irish potato joke here). Very very good dish. The spices really hint at the clean flavor of the meat.
My wife had the shrimp & chips. This was the ok part of the meal. Nothing much to write about.
This was a week night, so we did not see any stand up comedy, but a good selection of classic rock kept my 2 year old entertained!
I really enjoy going to Dubh Linn's. They have a plethora of fun games to play; darts, shuffle board, pool, and big buck hunter. The bartenders are always nice, attentive, and quick with reasonably priced drinks. Also on the weekends they host comedy shows in their back room which they have a few different comedians, some are pretty funny while a few are not, but a good time overall. When I want to grab a drink when I'm in Duluth, Dubh Linn is high on my list of places to go. The crowd I would say is in the 20's- mid 30's and they typically have a pretty decent turn out.
Review Source:I love this place. Â Free peanuts, cheap beer, friendly bartenders. Â Felt like a traditional Irish pub, although a little cavernous. Â They make a heck of a Long Island Ice Tea! Â They have a home brew stout but were out of it the night we were there. Â Staff made us feel at home. Â Food was very good pub grub. Â Best Irish bar in Duluth!
