From the outside, the location looks like you will be murdered. Â Do not fear! Â Best sushi and hibachi in the suburbs. (Must call ahead for the hibachi). I've had friends come down from the city specifically to eat here. Friendly service as well, which can be rare in a suburb sushi restaurant. Excellent plum wine, perfect traditional rolls, interesting chef's rolls, and the best miso soup I've ever tasted.
Review Source:Love this place so much, they have so much great positive vibes and family ties, it reminds me of the restaurant my parents used to have in DeKalb, IL called Thai Pavilion.  We've since sold it but it's forever in my heart because I grew up in the restaurant, it was a family business and well let's just say we cared more than the usual wait staff and owner would because it was a representation of our Thai culture.  Though they are of Korean, who cares they make great Sushi!  They have such creative ones that are my FAVORITE and I know Sushi!  The have the rolls you cannot find anywhere else but there!  I tell yah, my favorite Emma and the wonderful family  knows is the Flamingo roll and Grand Canyon roll!  I love it so much I had a dream I was there ordering a Drum roll = I made this up in my dream and told the Sushi Chef and the family about it.  Please go there, support the local mom and pop shop, they are good people deserving of this attention.  Tell them Anne from DeKalb sent yah and Emma should know LOL!  Go visit the pig no their counter I gave the lady as a present.  Koreans love their pigs, it's a sign of wealth!  We must have gotten the piggy bank from them.  Repeat:  Grand Canyon Roll, Flamingo Roll and Lobster Roll if you have enough room!  The first two are a must as they balance each other out!
Review Source:This is absolutely one of my favorite casual sushi spots in Chicago. The reason I enjoy Edo Sushi is that it is a smaller restaurant and everything is always extremely fresh and delicious. The prices used to be lower and after menu changes they raised them, although not by too much. I like the paper lanterns, friendly waitresses and intimacy the restaurant offers. Great place for first dates due to the reasonable prices and it's super quiet for getting to know someone. I often would go and sit at the sushi bar by myself and felt totally comfortable.
Review Source:I used to work across the street and would come here for lunch at least every couple of weeks or so. Â I got to be friendly with the owner and one of the waitresses. Â The sushi was okay, maybe a little overpriced for something so unremarkable, but it was Lincoln Park and I only got a half hour for lunch, so I didn't complain. Â I got bibimbop once and it was okay, not super authentic, but full of nice veggies.
A couple of months later, I saw my friend the waitress working at New Tokyo. Â I asked what happened. Â She said that there was some sort of shakeup and the guy who owned the place (I guess he was co-owner) advised her for her own good to quit and find another job because things were about to go really bad there. Â She told me to avoid the place. Â I haven't been back since.
The bf and I stopped in here on a whim on a Sunday night. It was empty and it seemed like a nice place, so we bellied up to the sushi bar hoping to get our sushi fix.
It was not the best sushi I have had. Our rolls were not rolled tight enough so they kept falling apart on that short little trip from plate to mouth. Also, the descriptions were not 100% accurate about what the roll was, we had a deep fried roll by accident?!
The sashimi threw me off the worst. The chef had to shave several layers off of the super white tuna to get to something fresh enough to serve. When I took my first taste of it I politely spit it out into my napkin, it was not fresh at all and had a very poor taste.
We all agreed Edo had the poorest sashimi we've had since moving to Chicago. Not that we've been to more than five or so places so far, and not that it was terrible or anything.
Titi's comment: "It tastes like it's from a lake," said it all. Sashimi has to have that taste of the ocean or it's just not ... whatever, doing part of its job? Fujiko and I agreed. And don't you hate that yucky over softness some old sashimi has? Two of a certain 'whitefish' were like that, so I had to eat them, quickly.
On the not at all compensating bright side, it's a comfortable restaurant with friendly service.
Big fan - as far as neighborhood sushi spots, this place tops the list. Fresh, tasty rolls, extremely inexpensive, and cute, trendy decor. Beats the seedy feel of Nohana and the often overcrowded New Tokyo, even if it does require a bit farther hike from the familiar Lakeview environs.
Review Source:YUM! Edo has great sushi and great service. The restaurant is great for dates or groups. I've ordered out a couple times and they let you use their internet while waiting which is pretty cool. The prices are reasonable and they have interesting rolls. The dragon roll is awesome - the portion is big and it's filling as well!
Review Source:The sushi is very fresh and the staff is friendly and prompt. In addition to the usual rolls, they also have some great inventive ones, such as the the Santa Fe, consisting of shrimp tempura, Boston lettuce, cucumber and avocado with spicy mayonnaise. Delicious! They also have sake and other drinks, as well as bubble teas.
Review Source:Until pretty recently, I did not care much for sushi as a dining option, not so much because I disliked the cuisine, rather I was put off by the too-slick/too-snobby atmosphere of most big-city sushi spots. Â I walked into Edo on a whim some months ago and was very pleased, the sushi was tasty, the wait staff was friendly, and the dining room was small & pleasant enough for a nice low-key dining experience.
Review Source:This is a wonderful japanese restaurant!! The staff is always polite and cheerful, greeting everyone with an "Irashai!" when they walk in the door. Very nice environment, always clean and not too noisy. They serve noodle, rice, and other traditional dishes in addition to a great sushi selection. Good portion sizes and reasonable prices. My favorites are the Caterpillar and Dragon rolls! ^_^
