I've only been here for the booze, not the food, and I only go once every two years when I visit my family (I'm a west-coaster) but my beers have always been cold and crisp, the selection is great, and I've made some fine memories here. Like my little sister's 21st birthday way back in 2002... SHE doesn't remember that night, but I sure do, and I have the pictures to prove it happened!
Review Source:I had high hopes - the place looked fun. Â Unfortunately my shrimp po'boy was sloppy - the bartender commented "the shrimp usually aren't this fluffy, good luck eating that."
When he saw my ID was from CA, and I confirmed that I'm from San Francisco he told me he "felt the need to drop a gay joke." Â He proceeded to give me his best feminine voice and said something about fire....? Â
Dull mind to match a dull sandwich.
I've always loved going here for a drink. In the fall, the Cottonwood pumpkin ale is my favorite drink and I've only had it here. This time, I came here for lunch with a friend when I was in town. We both ordered burgers (mid-rare and medium respectively) and they both came out medium well-well. That was slightly upsetting but I was actually amazed at how well it tasted. The side of pasta was covered in pesto and it was disgusting. I normally love pesto but this one was missing something. I had several glasses of Malbec and my friend had Chardonnay (I know, she ordered it before she knew she was ordering a burger). The wine selection is extensive as is there beers on tap. I'm always amazed at their drink selection and I urge anyone in Winston-Salem to go there for beer out of the ordinary Bud Light and Miller Light.
Review Source:Totally cozy little joint with a great curated draft beer list, a promising looking wine list, and a solid bar menu. I had the 'three little piggies' and it was just as meaty and cheesy as I could have hoped. Great place to relax after a stressful afternoon trying on pants at the mall down the road.
Review Source:This place is great! They have beers you can't get just anywhere. Plus the food is DELICIOUS. I had the salmon burger with dill mayo- so good! The horseshoe bar is really neat- it has tables attached so you feel like you're sitting at a bar without actually sitting at a bar....if that makes sense.
Review Source:I like this place. It's everything that I look for in a brew pub. A interesting selection of beer, a simple menu with tasty grub and a friendly bar staff.
I had the fried asparagus to go along with my Uinta IPA. Both were quite tasty. I especially liked the horseradish dipping sauce for the asparagus. One other cool thing is that the music wasn't so loud that I couldn't carry on a conversation without screaming.
First off, the five star rating is just because I love this place. If I wasn't a regular, I'd probably only give it four stars. Â We've been going there for years - usually for lunch during the week. Â As the name might suggest this is a bar, but their lunch fare is as good as any place in Winston. Also a really neat facility - a real throwback.
Try the appetizers - they'll usually do a half portion, if you ask nicely.
Great assortment of beers on tap - some nice and often uncommon microbrew options.
Personal recommendation: order the chicken finger appetizer. Â It's as big as any entree, and you'll probably have trouble finishing it. Get the buffalo sauce (lots of flavor, not just heat) and blue cheese on the side. Â
Other favorites - Bourbon Street (pizza or sandwich), Creeper Wings, Chips and Salsa (ALWAYS GREAT FRESH SALSA), Pork Sandwich, and my wife's favorite - the Thai Chicken Wrap.
Not the best place for kids as there aren't high chairs, but if your kids are willing to sit on barstools, they WILL enjoy the food (although there's no kids menu).
Great beer selection. And it's served nice and cold too. I'm a big IPA fan and they have several to choose from. Â Only 2 TVs, but HD and at least one is easily visible from anywhere in the place. Interesting set-up with 4-person tables jutting out from the bar on one side. I'm guessing that's to make it easier for the bartender to wait on and serve them.
The food menu is large, complete, and modestly priced. Everything from pizzas to burgers, wraps and sandwiches to soups and salads. Â A nice selection of apps too.
Definitely would come back for the great cold beer at least.
3 stars for ambiance, the beer, and the wine. If I was rating on food, it would be 1 star.
This place is super chill, and a fun patio. You would never guess that based on location. It's basically under an overpass and adjacent to the hospital. For some reason it's just cool. :)
The food blows. The most tolerable thing is the nachos. I've had several sandwiches and the chicken strips (how the heck do you screw up chicken strips?!) And all were boring, bland, and over cooked.
BUT I would def go back, just not while hungry. Save those calories for a liquid dinner. ;)
First Street rocks.
Great tap selection. Above-average pub food. Interesting horseshoe layout. And of course, a most excellent outdoor patio.
No surprise - it can get crowded and they don't service the patio (very often if at all). But still, my go-to joint for a neighborhood beer and burger.
Beneath the interstate just down Hawthorne hill is a place that we at the Medical Center love, and take interviewees, vendors and each other to for lunch. I have never actually been there in the evenings where i could judge the bar, but the food and service are excellent, atmosphere is relaxed. I scratched my head for reasons to not give it a 5 star review and cannot think of any.
Review Source:First Street Draught House is simply amazing. I'll go negatives then positives...
First, understand what you are getting into. While they do have terrific food, this IS a bar...a bar that happens to have really good food. So, unless you go on a nice day and are sitting on the patio, you are sitting at the bar. Personally, considering the size of the bar, I don't look at this as negative. Some people may, so I feel it is worth noting.
Second, this place fills up quick especially after 5. If this place is anything, it is small. I prefer to think of it as cozy. Just be prepared for a crowd. Again, I don't see this as a negative, but someone else may.
Now...on to the positives...
Beer selection is decent, which is something that is hard to come by in various bars around Winston-Salem. They have many of my favorite stand-bys and usually a couple things that I may want to try on a whim. No matter my mood, the selection of draught beer is tough to beat in these parts.
The food, while not new and different, is well crafted. I love their sweet potato fries. After several different menu items, I have yet to pick a favorite because each time I go here, I am inspired to try something new. The crab cake sandwich is decent for this not being a coastal cuisine-type restaurant. The rueben and cuban are both full of flavor. When I go back, I will try something else as I really expect everything to be just as good if not better than the last thing I try.
I haven't frequented this restaurant at night (due primarily to the crowds they draw) and usually hit up First Street for a late lunch on the weekend. When I am here, the bartender is usually very helpful with selections. As previously working as a server, I can say they tend to be as attentive as you would want without being intrusive.
I usually don't praise bars this much in my reviews, but First Street Draught House definitely deserves to be one of the highest-rated bars on W-S Yelp in my humble opinion. I am shocked that I am the first to review it!
