I have been a patron of Golden Dynasty for many years, even as far back when it used to be China Bull And Bear, and it has remained consistently good for all these years. There are so many local Chinese food take out places in this area, but GD takes it to another level. The restaurant is not tacky looking like some others, the service is great, and all the servers are dressed neatly, some are even dressed in tuxedos, and they go out of their way to make your dining experience a pleasant one.
I have never been disappointed with the food I've ordered and they have the best egg drop soup and steamed dumplings.
Living very close to the restaurant, I can always see how crowded it is, so they are definitely doing something right.
This establishment does not deserve any rating below 4 stars!
Good Chinese No Chopsticks
First, I should say that I have forgotten what good Chinese food should taste like after 10 years living in the South. It is just too hard to recall the heyday of living in the Bay Area. Overall, I found the food pretty tasty and it would blow any Austin, TX establishment out of the water that I have had thus far (the lack of good Chinese in Austin is an ongoing local inside joke that baffles everyone there). However, it seems that the Golden Dynasty caters to its local Northern Jersey clientele in a way that probably makes many of them very happy, but leaves a lot to be desired as well. The first hint of this arises when you notice the place is in an old house. But you are fully aware of how far off the reservation you are when you look all around the main dining room and can't see a single pair of chopsticks. Seriously, how far are we from Manhattan? No chopsticks?!?! Is the Hudson really that wide? Yikes! This is not to mention that I saw more boutique sweaters in the place than a country club gala. I was not surprised then that the food was very mild in flavor. I am sure that is what the clientele expected.
Anyhow, as I said before, I really enjoyed the food and the wait staff was fantastic. We had a bunch of roundy small children with us and staff treated them with outstanding grace.
Never disappointed. Â Our go-to place for fine Chinese food in north Bergen County. Salt and Pepper Shrimp alongside the Sizzling Steak make for a nice twist on "surf n turf". Â Szechuan dumplings are a great appetizer. Â The dumpling is thin - not like most other take-out NJ Chinese that have thick, pasty dumplings. Â Would normally rate this spot in Hillsdale four stars but am giving it the full five stars in the hopes that I can, overall, help tip the restuarant's rating to above the meager 2.5 stars it's experiencing as of May 2013. Shocking. Â I guess this spot get's dinged for being a bit pricey but, hey, it's worth it.
Review Source:Pretty nice place !
Definitely going back again here. I am also a bit surprised by the poor reviews. In fact this place was quite good. It had a nice decor, and was fairly priced.
I tried the Chicken-Shrimp lunch combo. It was tasty. They serve a choice or pineapple or ice-cream as well in lunch. for less than $9 per person.
generic average chinese take-out in a shiny, mid-residential, wrapper!
Anyone ranking this as one star without violent food poisoning is clearly biased, as there is no such range of Chinese food in America. You are either average or amazing. Although pricing is a different story based on the specifics of the restaurant, this place is average.
What a shame. I really wanted to like this place. It's just bad all around.
Spare ribs were dry, dry, dry. Won tons were utterly bland and forgettable - not to mention the tasteless salted-water broth. Roasted pork with broccoli was also inexplicably dry, with a vain attempt to cloak with a cloyingly-sweet brown sauce. Beef with garlic sauce was also far too sweet, and had a predominant taste of water chestnuts. There was far more by way of shredded onions, bean sprouts, and water chestnuts versus beef. It was all swimming in an unappealing, loose, watery sauce.
I wanted to love it, because it's the only sit-down Chinese place locally - but next time, I will stick to local take-out - which is also painfully mediocre, but at a far lower price. Oh well!
I really wanted to like this place!  Dine in Chinese is hard to find but there was nothing good here. Piña Colada  had  no rum., Vegetable dumplings had an off taste,  the dipping sauce was bitter instead of the tangy sweet taste I am accustom to.  The Generals chicken was horrible, watery brown cornstarch-one bite was all it took- yuck!  The waitress never came over to see how it was. Unfortunately I have to stick with takeout-Bamboo House in Ridgewood or Hunan in Waldwick-both are excellent.
Review Source:I am very confused by the negative reviews. This place is wonderful. My family and I used to come here years/decades ago (it's so good it's been around at least 20 years). Since I have since moved out to Manhattan, it's been quite a few years since my last GD meal. This past weekend my family patronized this fine establishment once again and I remembered why I liked it so much growing up.
First of all, this place is must more elegant and sophisticated than your run-of-the-mill Chinese food restaurant. The service is wonderful and the restaurant is run efficiently and professionally. It's a great place for a family get-together or even a special occasion.
I love their spare ribs. I similarly love their shrimp trio (my favorite thing on the menu). Watch out, one of the three shrimp styles is a bit spicy, which I enjoy. The sesame chicken is average but not bad but the chicken and broccoli is wonderful. In addition, I am not a fan of sweet and sour chicken - anywhere. However, this sweet & sour is really really good. My boyfriend, an avid S&S fan, thought it was some of the best he's ever tried.
I have found few Chinese restaurants in the city (Grand Sichuan on St. Marks being an exception) that are as good as this place! Keep shining, Golden Dynasty!
My family ate here for Easter lunch. We saw all the newspaper clippings in the front  saying how good the food was...we were sadly very very disappointed. Not authentic at all. They drowned the dishes in the same gross sauce. My father had stomach pains immediately after eating.  We will never go back here again. Do not go here.
Review Source:I'm a little confused by all the bad reviews but this place is pretty good. It's difficult to compare though because all the local sit down places have shut down. Peking House-Closter and Hong Hing (back in the day) were the only places I remember.
This place, in my world, is considered a treat because it beats some of the run of the mill Chinese take out places. So this review is based on just that...take out.
The tiki bar is pretty small when you walk in, and the main dining room seems kind of bland. It definitely seems crowded.
My favorite dish from this place aside from the egg rolls is something called Gemini. This is sliced steak chunks that breaded and fried, much like how Sesame Chicken is prepared. Gemini though is tossed in an orange brown sauce and it's delicious. It's served with Chinese crepes and sauteed green beans.
I do sometimes stop in for a drink before my order's ready and they are heavy handed with the booze....there's a surprise!
Excellent food, with 1 MAJOR problem: The same sauce drowns 90% of the dishes. While it is really good, it kind of defeats the purpose of returning (if you like variety). A big exception is the (appropriately named) amazing chicken. It uses some of the tastiest sauce I've ever had. Also, the lunch specials are amazing values (everything else, not so much).
One last thing: the egg rolls are practically entrees on their own and are very tasty.
While it was nice to find a Chinese restaurant in the area that had dine-in services, the prices were up to twice as much as local take-out places and the food quality was not nearly as good. My sesame beef was awful - grisly meat and a strange flavor left after eating. Supposed spicy dishes were not at all spicy. If you stick to the hot and sour soup, you'll be fine. I will not be returning to this over-priced, under par restaurant.
Review Source:I want to LOVE Golden Dynasty, but I just can't. Â Let's start with decor. Â I've been told that for years G.D. had an amazingly kitsch look and feel...However, they tore out the dragons and red velvet wallpaper and made it look like every bad stripmall Chinese buffet.
On to the drinks...Holy Mother of God! Â If you're in Jersey and are jonesing for good tiki drinks, G.D. is the place...Heavily-alcoholed drinks in classic tiki glasses...The bar is as good as Otto's Shrunken Head in Alphabet City...
The food is the issue....I ordered two Chinese restaurant mainstays, hot and sour soup and General Tso's chicken. Â The soup was bland, there's not much more to say than that. Â General Tso's chicken, a good barometer of any Chinese restaurant was problematic. Â It was fried (a plus), but the sauce was watered-down with too little flavor...go sweet and thick or spicy and thin...do something! Â For God's sake, I was rooting for you so hard. Â Where the bar stepped up, the kitchen didn't deliver. Â You're killing me!
Golden Dynasty food is somewhat pricey and average for a Chinese restaurant. Â Service is absolutely the worst that it could possibly be. Â 4 of us had dinner there the other day and we had to ask the waiter to do simple things, such as take our order, give us water, and the finally the bill. Â They are not friendly at all and do not know the meaning of customer service. Â I have tried this restaurant 4 times in the last year and a half, always the same. Â Other friends have confirmed the service is awful.
Review Source:If you like authentic Chinese food and fast service, you will NOT like this place.
If you like fake, Americanized Chinese food that is drenched in soy sauce (NOT the way we cook everything), where every single dish is flavored the exact same way with no distinct flavors, then you will like this place. My American co-workers love this place, but I just feel sorry for them as they haven't tasted real Chinese food.
My Chinese co-workers and I have been here a few times and each time we have noticed this trend where the lunch specials are all drenched in the exact same soy sauce/ sugar/ salt combination (whether it's vegetables, chicken, beef, pork, seafood. You name it). Also, as we're often coming here during our limited lunch break during work, a meal for 8+ people regularly takes two hours. This should not be the case when the restaurant is NOT crowded by any means and we're all ordering lunch specials which are simple, standard three course meals.
The one good thing I can say about this place is that they have a really good deal for the lunch special - with tip you pay about $10 for soup, rice, an entree, and ice cream dessert. I guess they can afford to be that cheap for the low quality of food (though the green tea ice cream's pretty good).
POSITIVES:
- good lunch special deal. The green tea ice cream's not bad.
NEGATIVES:
- Americanized, fake Chinese food. Everything is flavored the EXACT same way.
- Slow slow slow service! Bad for large groups coming during lunch break from work - your lunch will take 2 hours!
I've been going to Golden Dynasty for over 10 years now and they are still some of the best Chinese in Pascack Valley. The only things that keep them from getting 5 stars are how crowded the restaurant is on weekends and how limited the menu is. While the food and drinks are delicious, you're looking at a lot of chicken/shrimp/beef plus brown sauce and mixed vegetables. If you're looking for more adventurous or authentic Chinese, I'm afraid you'll need to look elsewhere.
