This place is one of the few that you give three stars only because theres nothing else in the area that serves up OK breakfast 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Â This place comes in handy when you're looking for 4th meal on a party night. Â Everytime I come here its after a night of fun or mischief. Â I suspect many people in Chi have had similar stories. Â It's decent food, decent service. Â It's 3 stars.
Review Source:I think this was the location we went to at midnight after listening to a band at the Green Mill down the road.
Classic late night diner. No frills. Clean, well-lit, kept up. Old school with a huge sprawling menu that had photos of food.. that actually looked appetizing and exactly like what it was. I didn't see any annoying constraints on what you could have at what time other than daily specials on different weekdays. I went for a breakfast burrito, but the waffles and french toast looked amazing and slathered with everything. Will go back sometime for those.
Waitress was nice, prompt and refilled our beverages in a timely manner. Food was served on those giant white platter plates, and I'd asked for no hash browns and sauce on the side, and both were done without complaint or mistakes. Breakfast burrito was exactly what I expected and wanted. Added a side of biscuits and gravy.. and it was also exactly what I was craving-- huge white fluffy lumps of dough covered in tangy gravy, they broke apart under my fork and tasted buttery. Probably the best biscuits I've ever had.
Exactly what I wanted. Prices were reasonable.
Spent Thanksgiving morning here and was very impressed with the service and the food. Everything looked ans tasted delicious. I was so happy with my stuffed french toast. Finally my craving for sweet cheese stuffed inside of a golden batter-dipped toast topped with warm apple compote and whipped cream had been satisfied completely.
The service was beyond excellent as well. Maybe bc it was Thanksgiving? Who knows. Either way, I have no complaints about anything except the prices which, for a little diner I thought were on the steep side. But that's just me. Will definitely come back again!
It's 2am...you're leaving the bar. Doesn't a diner just sound perfect?
Out of the abyss, you spot the Golden Nugget Pancake House.
Do yourself a favor and turn around now!
What an awful experience. A friend and I ended up here for a late-night meal, and because we took the Metra into Chicago, our stop was in Ravenswood. We had 2 hours to kill, so we stopped in. I've always seen this restaurant on my way into Chicago, so I was excited to finally try it out.
The atmosphere is a mid-century diner style, slightly run-down. We were seated right away, and we both started with a cup of coffee. Now, Golden Nugget has a disclaimer at the top of their menu stating that they carry the best coffee!
I've never had a terrible cup of coffee until that day. It tasted like hot water. There was no coffee flavor whatsoever.
My friend ordered some strawberry pancakes and I ordered the biscuits and gravy. The wait was average, not too long. The waitress was attentive and constantly refilled our water, as we had not touched the coffee.
When the food arrived, it was a huge portion. I was excited to dig in! Boy, what a terrible decision. The food was absolutely bland. You couldn't even taste the sausage in the gravy. The portion was huge, but I barely touched it. My friend was dissatisfied with the pancakes, which were also bland and covered in some sort of processed strawberry sauce.
Please, if you are even considering a meal here, think again. Your money will be better spent on something worth stomaching.
It's a diner. It serves a purpose of food, convenience, something for everyone. My crepes were tasty, husband's skillet big and happy. Biscuit was huge and looked delicious but tasted like soap.
I'd eat here again tho. Service good, coffee kept getting topped off. What more could you need for breakfast?
This is my near the neighborhood anytime breakfast place!!!! My family digs in the french toast, eggs and bacon and staff is very attentive and friendly! My coffee cup is constantly filled and the price is great. With three small children, the child friendly menu and coloring page definitely comes in handy especially on those mornings when you just want to enjoy getting served. It's my break on weekends!!!! :)
Review Source:This is our go-to breakfast spot. The pancakes are true stand-outs: tons of butter on top, just the right fluffy texture, rich, rich flavor; probably the best pancakes I've ever had (sorry, mom). I usually go with the four deuces or a weekday 4.99 special: a little bit goes a long way, especially with a couple pancakes in there.
Since the pancakes are so dynamite, I find it tough to forgo them entirely, but when I have, I've been pleasantly surprised. I've really taken to the chili and the south of the border items.
This place just never seems to disappoint.
The pancakes are *crazy* good. Â Delicious batter, texture that's dense and fluffy at the same time, and something magical happens when syrup touches them. Â Lots of options like blueberry and banana. Â Good fruit compotes, chunky and not too sweet. Â Their waffles are also very good, but I haven't yet had more than a bite of one.
I had their huevos a la mexicana which I thought was very good and filling, but the pancakes and waffles are why I go back.
PANCAKES.
My 5 stars are mainly for the pancakes. Â Other non-breakfast food is just ok and the last time I ate the fries they were changed from delishus to mealy.
The other breakfast items I have had are also delishus. Â Such as the 3-3-3-3 (three extra large eggs, three pancakes, three strips of bacon and three sausage links). Â It's not very filling so get a side of toast or get a side of English muffin. Â Of course I'm joking, VERY filling yet I like to make egg sammich with my English muffin. Â Great value for the price. Â Tip your waiter/waitress well! Â They work hard.
I went here to treat myself for breakfast before work at 5:45am on a Sunday. There were, surprisingly a few other people eating. The service was great and I was brought out coffee right away. I love the variety of creamer flavors, chose caramel mochiato. Yum!
I ordered 'very berry French toast' with blue berries. It was very good, the French toast was a bit soggy for my taste though. Served promptly and with a smile. I also ordered a jr. blt sandwich to go which came with my check. Total was $18. Not bad.
I will be back, it's right by my new place the servers are friendly and they have something for everyone on their menu. Oh yeah, 24 hrs so when I work WAY too much over the weekend I can have a pick me up whenever. Love it.
I came here after a drunken night of debauchery with Maria F. and my friend Mike. This wasn't just a regular night of mayhem, which I've been known to have on occasion. This was after a BYOB dinner, closing down Atlantic, C&S, St. Pauli's, another bar I can't remember and a karaoke bar. THAT kind of night. And you know nights that epic call for something to soak up the suds before bedtime.
I'm not sure how this was chosen since Chicago is pretty well known for having places all over open at all hours of the night, but I think there is something to be said for your "bacon 'n' eggs" breakfast diner. I love breakfast foods at all hours of the day and this hit the spot without leaving a hole in my wallet. I ordered a huge omelette with hashbrowns, other sides and a juice. It was less than $10.
Is it the greatest breakfast place of my life? No. Is it even top 5? No. But it gets the job done and I walked away quite satisfied with my choice and the price. Our waitress made sure our orders were correct, we had plenty of refills and they didn't mind us sitting there forever holding our heads.
If IHOP and The Waffle House had a baby, it would be the Golden Nugget. Â I have walked by this neighborhood greasy spoon several times and finally decided to give it a shot for breakfast. Â
On this visit, I went with the Breakfast Burrito. Â It was huge and actually tasted pretty good! Â I also tried some of my wife's pancakes, and they were also surprisingly good.
We received excellent service which moved my review from 3 stars to 4.
I am sure I will return for a breakfast in the future.
When I was a kid, our school bus would drive past a Golden Nugget Pancake House (no idea which one) and I always wanted to go in and eat there. Â I loved that the windows were always decorated according to the season and you cant go wrong with the word "pancake" in your name. My mom of course, would never take us kids there. Â So how fun is it that 25 plus years later, I'm taking my mom here for a late breakfast.
My bro lives in the area so I've visited this place a few times and most recently with Mom. The food is solid. I always order breakfast no matter the time of day. Â I love their waffles--fluffy with a nice crisp edge. Â I love their cheese smothered hashbrowns too. Â Gooey cheese topping on the crispy potatoes. Â And bottomless coffee is an added plus. Â
This place is no frills. There are definitely busy times but they seem to turn over the tables quickly so there's never been a wait for us and the food is always good and hot. Â Good service, not overly friendly, but prompt.
I'm scared.
Hold me.
I. Actually. Like. This. Diner.
holy crap!
(what is wrong with me. I don't like diners! wahhh, make it stop)
I ESPECIALLY should not like THIS diner, with it's 1970's porn interior (lots of gold and brown reflective and scrubbable surfaces) and depending-on-when-you-go questionable clientele.
BUT I DO.
I suppose, after living here 11 years, some Midwestern values would eventually rub off on me, but diners? A place called The Golden Nugget?
-going to hide under the bed now.
A quote from Yogi Berra comes to mind when I think about the Golden Nugget. "It is, what it is". Golden Nugget is a place to get your grub on when you have a hankering for some good old fashioned diner food. It's nothing fancy, just decent food at a affordable price.
I have ordered quite a few different items at this location. The omelette's, club sandwiches and wraps are the best things in the menu. The service has always been good, and they have a knack at keeping my coffee cup full. Â
If you are looking for a high class dining experience, please look elsewhere. The G.N. is for people who want to get tie on the feed bag and enjoy massive amounts of food without putting a dent in their wallets. It's your typical diner, nothing more, nothing less.
Stay hungry, my friends.
Oh, the Nug'. Â I'd never been to one of these establishments before a few months ago when I started dating the bf. Â But when he's there in the morning and he wants me to *gasp* feed him??!! Â What choice does this non-cooker have but to make a bee line for the closest, most reasonably-priced diner type place I can find? None at all. Â And that's fine by me.
We've gotten a variety of items here, all from the breakfast menu, if I'm not mistaken, and they've all been satisfactory, if not excellent. Â The waffles are yummy, the coffee is flowing ... the last time I was there I got the skillet with the smoked sausage in it (can't recall it's name) and I liked it so much that I actually brought the rest of it home in a doggie bag. Â
The servers we've had here have all been perfectly acceptable, save for last time when it seemed we were forgotten for a while during a busy period. Â Understandable, but all I wanted was to ask for a doggie bag so I could get out of their hair.
One small warning, though ... bring some baby wipes and a Tide-To-Go if you plan on ordering anything topped with the strawberry compote. Â That stuff latches onto anything it touches and will NOT LET GO!!
My friend Phil is a persuasive guy. I was ready for some fast Mex at Super Fast Burrito but after asking me if I had ever actually consumed their burritos sober (well, no) and scratching his head over the awkward name, my mind was effectively changed. I'm a pushover, eh?
I was also schooled on how to order well at a diner. Sometimes, my aspirations for late-night eating are a bit high and I order something like a Reuben. Or a quesadilla. All poor choices, according to Phil. But eggs and bacon are a good choice. Club sandwiches are usually solid. And you can't go wrong with a burger.
I opted for the Somerset English Breakfast: Two eggs (over medium, thank you) with sausage and home fries smothered in sharp cheddar cheese, with a side of English muffin. It's somewhat DIY if you will... a deconstructed spread which is conducive to taking a heap of cheesy potato and egg and smashing it atop the muffin, open-face style. Nom nom nom.
The coffee is probably Folgers, so don't expect java nirvana. This is how you walk out of a greasy spoon happy: Smart ordering!
Friday night some gal pals and I ate a massive platter of sushi and consumed our fair share of various adult beverages. Â Very adult, one of the wine bottles had an illustration of a naked lady on a bike on it. Â Apparently it's been banned in Arkansas... anyway, back on topic.
Saturday morning, we came to The Nug to do some damage control. Â This Nugget is like all the rest, but on this occasion it was fun to see all the staff in various Halloween costumes. Â Halloween fun can help cure your hangover, you know. Â For the health conscious, there are egg white omelettes, on the weekends they have eggs Benedict on special, and the corned beef hash is a notch above what you'd expect at a greasy spoon. Â There are also a variety of options for sides with the egg dishes. Â French toast? Â Unheard of. Â
The ladies room is trapped in the 70s and the coffee is far too weak, but if you need a post birthday party breakfast, the Golden Nugget is here for you.
Your standard greasy spoon breakfast fare.
I ordered a cinnamon apple waffle and it tasted only vaguely cinnamon-y, apple-y or waffle-y. Â With each bite, I kept wondering whether I'd suddenly developed a cold or some sort of taste bud-nullifying disease. Â But I think the truth is that this is just a bland, bland restaurant.
The server was nice and friendly, but I'd be hard-pressed to recommend Golden Nugget unless you were in a late-night munchie mood. Â Spend your money elsewhere and fill your belly with legitimate food.
I have been meaning to try this place out for a long time now (from seeing it driving by all the time)...and when my friend said they have awesome breakfast...I was soo in to experiment another place I can get grease after partying all night...
And there we were (and if the weather was nice, I would have walked it!). Â And surprisingly...as crowded as it was on a Sunday morning, we were seated instantly!
No fancy syrups or table cloths...no gimmicks...just good ole hearty and aorta clogging goodness! Â
Service...spot on. Â They were very attentive and friendly.
Food...You MUST have the Country Fried Steak...served with eggs (cooked your way), hashbrowns (or pancakes) and toast. Â It's been such a long time I have had such a deliciously fried steak!
Yup, I was in heaven...and saving this one for those mornings when my stomach is craving for some grease!
Love love love!
- They're open 24 hours.
- It is very clean.
- Parking lot!
- The waitresses are super sweet and friendly.
- Look at all those sides! Do yourself a favor and get the biscuit with sausage gravy. Yes, on the side. Do it. You'll love me forever.
- Delicious crispy hash browns. I didn't even need ketchup or hot sauce.
- Thick fluffy pancakes. Gimme that butter and syrup!
- The Philly wrap was meaty and greasy and just what I was in the mood for. The Denver omelet was huge, with lots of ham chunks, peppers and onions.
I had a lovely time here and the menu is so enormous that I feel I'll be back within the week to try more items. Stay gold GNPH!
"It is what it is"
I hate using that phrase, but that's pretty much what it is. But it's open 24 hours and they have coffee and breakfast all day, so who can complain about that? It's the perfect conclusion to a night out drinking and having fun. The food is average, but they have the best French Toast. They make good coffee, too.
This particular location always plays 80's music. Eating a grilled cheese sandwich or waffle while Take On Me is playing is quite the experience!
I like diner food. Â If I ever want some comfort/diner food I will go here if I'm in the area as it is close to my work.
Big plus, they have a free parking lot.
I've dined here quite a few times already. Â Service is pretty decent (fast and friendly) and portions are large. Â So far my favorites are their waffles (so fluffy and yummy) and their baked ham (juicy, thick, big, and tender). Â SO good. Â I also tried their baked ham sandwich which was delish. Â Onion rings and cole slaw are awesome too. Â I usually spend around $10-15 there with tip for a drink and entree.
Our waitress was amazing! Even though they aren't supposed to split the bill, she was nice enough to - that probably had to do with the fact that we were a party of three.
I didn't have much of an apetite, so I got this chips/salsa/bean combo for a cheap $2. It was a hefty amount of beans for the price I paid and the salsa must have been blessed by a priest because it was something serious.
My friends got pancakes accompanied by the thickest slab of ham ever to be carved and cole slaw.
The service is nice, as is the food. Check it out.
One of the great mysteries of Chicago to me is the fact that you are hard pressed to find any restaurant serving food past 11 pm. I mean, really - WTF? It's the 3rd largest city in the U.S. - not podunk Upper Peninsula MI.
So when my beloved and I left the wonderful Catalyst Ranch Elite Party and were starving, we were in a quandary. It's 1 a.m. - where to go? We finally settled on the Golden Nugget. Years ago we had gone to the Golden Nugget but I couldn't recall our experience - was the food good? Was it clean? Good service? Â We decided to revisit it and I am happy to say the answer is YES to the aforementioned questions.
Our sweet waitress Jessica was attentive and kept our Cokes and coffees flowing. The short stack pancakes were light and fluffy and oh so tasty! My eggs were just like I like them - over medium, hard whites/dunkable soft yokes = perfect! So hard to find places that make good over-medium eggs.
And as if my arteries weren't already going to get enough cholesterol, I asked Jessica, "Okay - be honest - how are the biscuits and gravy here?" Â She said they were good and thus, I ordered them - I devoured them - I would definitely get them again.
For what it's worth, the place was so clean - even the bathrooms were spotless. I have found our new late night eating home - in our own backyard.
Anything you want to eat for 10$... pretty much!
The nugget is the nugget- don't expect gourmet truffles, brie cheese, etc. But do expect lots of filling, enticing, wonderful carbs. In fact, your days worth of carb load will be consumed in one sitting!
Personal fave... when I need grease- the patty melt works wonders! Cheap, tasty, artery clogging food.
"Looks like the price of gold is going up!'
- My mom, today, lunch
Golden Nugget used to be a standard stop for me as it's right around the corner from my house, open 24 hours, and the food is consistently fine. Â I've never found anything on the menu to be remotely exceptional, but the food has always been solid, predictable diner fare. Â This is my go-to place when my parents visit me and I connive them into taking me out to lunch because I know we can all find something we like and it's unpretentious and comfortable.
I hadn't been to "The Nug" for a few months and stopped in this afternoon with my parents only to find to our displeasure that they've gotten a new menu and upped the price of every menu item by $2 or so. Â I understand that Ravenswood/Lincoln Square is getting increasingly yuppified and therefore more expensive, but the prices Golden Nugget is charging are now way above what I'm willing to pay for a greasy spoon - I mean, $9 for a hamburger and fries? Â Eight dollars and change for some eggs and sausage? Â These prices are on par with what I paid at Broadway Cellars for brunch last week and that food was of far higher quality.
Sorry Golden Nugget, but you've grown too big for your britches. Â AND you subjected me to an hour of my parents bemoaning how Mayor Daley is somehow making everything more expensive. Â Next time I'll guilt them into taking me to Garcia's.
If I go more than one weekend without breakfast (be it morning or late at night) at the Nugget, I'm not myself. Have been coming here for years, and it just feels right. Yeah, the newer menus and pricing make it a bit less of a bargain, but you get really good comfort food here.
Delicious pancakes made from scratch, with homemade compotes if you'd like - love the Little Boy Blue! Eggs always taste like real eggs, not from a jug or milked down. The ham is seemingly unprocessed. Soups are always yummy. I even try out the dinner specials from time to time, and they're surprisingly good compared to how their sample counterparts look in the plastic display case when you first walk in.
Pair the good comfort food with 24/7 hrs and prompt, friendly service, and this is my diner of choice, even if it's not right in my neighborhood. I never leave disappointed.
(actually a 3 and 1/2 if i could.)
I've been to a lot of breakfast spots (being that it is my favorite meal of the day at any time) and hands down golden nugget (ANY golden nugget) has the BEST FRENCH TOAST (just plain french toast). Â It doesnt need to be "stuffed" or dripped and covered in some sort of sweet topping or fruit. Â It is good as it is straight off the plate (no syrup please). Â Is it Texas toast that they use?? Â Maybe add a little butter and a little more powdered sugar but it is just SIMPLY THE BEST!!!!
I also occasionally have their BLT Club, I don't even like bacon and I don't get BLTs anywhere else, so I dunno what it is about GN's blt.
Service is always excellent.  My bf grew up eating with his mom at this one so a few of the waitresses recognize him and bring him his Cholula sauce right away  with his meal.
Could someone buy me one of the blue golden nugget fitted polos the waitresses wear? Thanks!
Best Brunch of Chicago as voted by the Reader. Â Really???
The Golden Nugget on Lawrence has a comforting down home diner vibe. Â Coffee is neverending. Â Portions are enormous. Â The food is served quickly. Â I had the Huevos a la Mexicana (eggs scrambled with onions, peppers and tomato, served with refried beans and rice - though I substituted the rice with hash browns). Â I think I had eaten barely 1/3 of my plate before I was stuffed...that's how big the portions were. Â
Not bad, but I would hardly qualify it as the BEST. Â I draw a fine line between "delicious" and "fulfilling". Â While both are individually very redeeming qualities, a combination of both is the best way to go. Â So, while The Golden Nugget served to satisfy my hunger pangs in a relatively enjoyable way, I would hesitate to eat there for reasons of palatability. Â The food was not disgusting...it was just nothing special. Â I biasedly think that's typically the case with most fare that is distinctly American.
After being a faithful Ravenswood-goer for many, many years, I needed to switch it up. We started hitting the Nugget for our weekend brunch. I love the monster butter waffle and the husband loves the omelets. I'd give them 5 stars but the coffee sort of sucks. As does most diner coffee though, so you can't get too down on them for that.
Sometimes I work nights and like to eat breakfast before I go to bed. I have sat in a booth, looking over estimates many a night and watched the interesting turn in the night. It goes from drunks to blue collars like me around 4-5am. One minute someone is telling their girlfriend to keep their voice down and the next there's two cops at the counter and folks in paint splattered clothes (me).
Those faux stained glass flourescent light covers are HILARIOUS too. I hope they never redecorate.
GREASE!!! Â The ultimate remedy for drunk tummies, the night of, or the morning after! This place puts the miracle cure on a plate and gives you syrup to pour all over it!
But even when completely sober, this place somehow delivers great tasting BREAKFAST food (I've never tried any of the lunch/dinner meals they offer, so I cant comment on the quality of that stuff.). And the price fits in the calorie splurging budget. In other words THEY ARE CHEAP! I'm a HUGE fan of the hash browns, which are crispy and great tasting.
The big negative is, sometimes don't feel like I'm totally in a clean environment when sitting in the teeny-tiny 2 person booths. I think its just the atmosphere, very cafe, very outdated (in a tacky way) but ..hey...the food is good. Ill just shut my eyes when eating :)
I would not normally give out a 5 star review for a greasy spoon, but after what happened today, the Golden Nugget gets an extra star.
The boyfriend and I have been going to "the Nug" for ages now. Â After a night of drinking, nothing makes you feel better like a pile of pancakes and French Toast. Â They make their cakes from scratch here, and man, they are good. Â The bf loves the french toast and it's the only thing he ever orders. Â And the coffee is really, really good and always fresh. Â
The reason the Nug gets an extra star? Â Today, my boyfriend (who is an epileptic) had a seizure in the restaurant while we were having breakfast. Â They handled the situation beautifully. Â They called 911, the hostess grabbed a busboy and they came over to offer help (we had to kind of drag the boyfriend up off of the floor as he had fallen mid-seizure), and they helped clean up the mess that we made with a sympathetic smile. Â The hostess was great - she sat on the floor with us until the boyfriend was able to get up and did not make us feel like we were being a bother. Â I was honestly about to break down crying, and she kept me from doing so. Â
I already really liked this place - but the way they went above and beyond today to make a tough situation a bit more manageable really moved them up a notch in my eyes.
Dear Mr. GN -- Granted, I've never actually visited you completely sober or not at 3 a.m. (the busiest hour), but you make a meannnn Denver omelet. Â I appreciate you for the lovely neighborhood grease joint that you are. Â My coffee is never empty and you are consistently satisfying. Â Oh, and your waitresses all have good attitudes, especially when people come in starving and stupid (me), so hip hip for that!
PS: thanks for always making my hash browns uber crispy - the only way they should be served.
We went in on the Saturday before Halloween....in costume. A little tipsy. Shocking, I know.
Our waitress was fun, dressed as a girl from "Grease." The movie Grease was playing, and the soundtrack was playing over the PA. It was cheery and fun and I got a kick out of it.
The food came super fast, the cofee refills were quick...and our waitress was very nice and had a good sense of humor.
A good greasy spoon, the service gets it an extra star...
What can you say about a Golden Nugget? I've been here a number of times, but never reviewed it because, well, what can you say about a Golden Nugget?
This outlet is certainly one of the better ones. It's certainly head and shoulders above the nasty GN down at Clark and Diversey. This one is clean, with friendly service. The food is what you'd expect from a GN -- decent, fairly priced, nothing special. Though the pancakes are always light and fluffy, which is a plus. The hashbrowns, on the other hand, are usually hard. Good with the bad, my friend.
There's no reason to go out of your way to eat here. But if you're in the hood and in the mood for some Golden Nugget chow, this place will more than satisfy you.
I've eaten here quite often in the last couple of months, as it is just a block away from my apartment. The value of a decent, 24-hour diner near one's home cannot be overstated.
First thing's first: the coffee isn't bad. It shouldn't offend anyone who is eating at a diner in the first place.
The menu is quite extensive, offering a variety of sandwiches, burgers, Mexican-American items, and diner staples like meatloaf. The food on the general menu is pretty average; everything seems to be made with the same five or six ingredients. However, the Nugget distinguishes itself with its breakfast menu, which is served at all times.
The eggs are typically done quite well, with the quality improving in inverse proportion to the number of customers in the restaurant. The best eggs are served at approximately 3:30 on weekday afternoons. Scrambles fluffy and delicate, cooked just enough to be firm without being runny. The breakfast sausages are remarkably high quality. Unlike the hard, turd-like kind you get at places like Clarke's, the Nugget's links are large, plump, and taste like sausage. I can also praise their buttermilk biscuits and compare them favorably to those which Southern grandmothers make. The pancakes are also excellent, as other Yelpers have pointed out--a couple of notches above IHOP's best. The weak point in their breakfast offerings is the hash browns: typically they're a little burnt and a sloppy, with that melted plastic crust they get when overcooked. Once in a while, however, they are perfect.
Tip: Unless you know what you're doing, avoid the biscuits and gravy. They'll go through you faster than Olestra through an irritable bowel.
My favorite plates:
* Pigs in Blankets, which are three or four of the aforementioned delicious sausage links wrapped in a pancake each. They don't look like much on the plate, but three will definitely sate me, and I can put away more than most.
* The "Dealer's Special": a plate of three eggs, four pieces of meat (sausage, bacon, or ham), hash browns, and a bread (biscuit or toast). I like to get scrambled eggs with sausage and a biscuit and eat it like a piecemeal sausage and egg biscuit.
The servers seem to know me by now, but even on my first visit, they were kind and attentive and they remain so even at the end of a busy shift. Orders are taken and filled promptly. Coffees get refilled before they're even empty. Extra napkins are always brought with the food. The tables are clean and nothing's sticky with spilled syrup. Another plus is that they do not charge a minimum for credit cards.
One star off for mediocre dinner menu plates, but that still makes the Golden Nugget at Lawrence and Ravenswood one of the best diners in the city.
