I love this bar. Great food, interesting menu, affordable, good atmosphere, awesome drinks, amazing location. A center city gem.

This place was something else.  It has the look of a dive bar but as unique of a menu as you'll find anywhere.  After reading some of the reviews my girlfriend and I decided to stop in for a quick bite for lunch.  As someone who's been in the restaurant business for seven years I can honestly say that the service was extremely friendly and right on point for the entire time we were there.

The beer list was impressive for such a small place.  Lots of variety in bottles and on draft, and the draft list appears to be rotating as well.  The menu even had a list of upcoming drafts, I thought that was pretty nice.  Long list of bottled beers as well, including larger bottles.

All of the food was unique in some fashion.  We started with the chicken tenders cordon bleu.  Those were flat out amazing.  Sliced chicken breast wrapped in swiss cheese and ham, and then coated in their house breading and fried.  The mustard sauce on the side really completed the dish.  My girlfriend had the fried tomato BLT, which she said was pretty tasty.  Tomatoes and mayo aren't really my thing so I didn't really try it.  I went with the duck quesadilla, which was very delicious.  The duck was plentiful and tasted very fresh.  It was wrapped with spinach, poblano peppers, and grilled onions with two kinds of cheese.  Crispy texture, but it didn't appear to be fried at all.  They covered it with a roasted tomato and dried cherry salsa and a sprinkle of cilantro.  The salsa was unlike anything I've had before.

I just wish we came for dinner so that we could have experienced more of the menu

We finally checked this place out last Friday. We got there around 5 and grabbed a booth on the ground floor, which worked out well because the place filled up soon after. The place isn't much to look at, but the beer selection was great and the food was really good. The hummus was excellent, as were the cheesesteak empanadas. I found the duck pot pie good but too much of the same thing after a while. My wife loved the mac and cheese.

We'll definitely be back. This place a great spot to hang out.

Bad dog!! Perhaps this is just the obnoxious brooklyn-spoiled brat in me, but seriously this was one of the worst meals I can remember in the last 10 years of my life. I think bad burgers should be federal crimes. I don't know who these raters are or where they come from (I suspect places where gimmicks like a cheese-stuffed burger impress even if the burger sucks), but they don't seem to know a good burger from one of those strips of rubber you see on the highway that was once a tire. But that comparison implies the burgers were overcooked actually when they were severely undercooked. We ordered burgers - my girl the good dog burger with the roquefort cheese inside and me with the standard - and oof. We both ordered medium and the burgers came out rare. i mean RARE. Like I was scooping out fleshy red disgust from the center just so I could eat it. And it's not like it was 7 minutes after we ordered. It took them 25 minutes to send us rare disgust. The meat itself was near flavorless.

The idea that places had this rated one of the best burgers in Philly was just sad! So the burgers were under done (and we're half-cutters so we didn't really know until it was too late, can't really send a burger back to the kitchen like that). Did I mention the fries were so unbelievably overdone that they were inedible? I am serious. The hardest french fry I've ever tried to eat. Mixed in were the edible sweet potato fries. At least those were chewable. We were happy we did not get food poisoning.

What a sad overhyped thing! Shockingly bad like whoa.

Really great service no matter how busy the place is, and it always seems stuffed to the gills. Try getting seated upstairs if you want a little more elbow room and a lower volume. The Ceaser salad, meatloaf and duck potpie are all wonderful. It is a great place for a burger and something more interesting too.

I stopped in on a Saturday evening for dinner and drinks, and was pleased with what I found. The Good Dog burger, stuffed with roquefort cheese and topped with onions was delicious. Although I feel like it could be improved with maybe some bacon, or even some greens. The fries, a mix of regular and sweet potato, were a nice surprise as well. They have a couple dozen beers on tap/bottle, so whatever you fancy, there's likely something good for you.

Excellent food + great beer selection + friendly service = winner!

Excellent beer, excellent sandwiches. A little loud, but that's the vibe.

Roquefort burger: perfectly done, juicy, cheesy goodness in a brioche bun. Just needs bacon. (everything is better with bacon)
Sweet potato fries: veggie members of group as well as carnivores loved them.
Great choices for beers. Really, what more do you need to know? Go here and eat well.

This is one of the dependable spots in center city that you can always get good food and beer.  I love the Good Dog Burger, which has the Roquefort cheese in the middle., and their hand cut fries are always a delight.  My friend recently joined me and was shocked his grilled octopus salad was so damn good.  He hadnt been there in a while and was blown away with the quality.
Im always happy with the service too. I have no idea why I hadnt yelped this before but I eat out a lot and am so glad to have these reliable places to save you when you just dont feel like chancing much.

Great spot - it has a Dive Bar feel but the food and drinks are tops.  Been there at different times of the day and the vibe changes slightly but the constant is a good food and beer selection.  The burgers are great as is the mac and cheese and lamb belly sandwich.  Highly recommended.

The pictures of the dogs lining the walls are great.

My wife and I have been here a couple of times, and their Good Dog burger is one of the best in the city. We had a really good waitress during our most recent visit, and I usually mention good servers by name in my reviews, but I was a bit too "happy" to make note of it on this particular night. If anyone from management sees this, she was working on the night of 4/27, heavy set, possibly with tattoos. We also tried the salted caramel cake, which was outstanding.

I really like this bar. They have a great beer selection and the service is great but the food is way over rated. I had the burger with the cheese in the middle and it was dry. I have the cheese steak things that are fried and they were super greasy. The other day i had the lamb belly sandwich and the lamb its self was really good but the flavor was lost in the whole sandwich.

Come here, hang out and get drinks but pass if your looking for really good food.

I would give it a 3.5, but 4 because I am dog fan, dog pics everywhere and they have a contest every year.  Took a trip to Philly and try to stop at a place on DDD everywhere we go.  Loved the empanadas, good hardy meal and good dive bar.

I've been to Good Dog four or five times since I moved here three years ago, so I would hardly call myself a regular.  That said, I would say I have been enough to opine on this little gem of a dive.  Personally, I am not one of these dive bar junkies, and I prefer a slightly more upscale bar if I am going to be eating food (for drinking bring on a good beer list and that is all I care about).  Good Dog delivers a much better dining experience than the surrounding decor gives off (and if you watch triple D, the kitchen actually looks in good order).  This is certainly not gourmet and I wouldn't compare this to the experience at, say, Village Whiskey, but it is solid.

If I was going to make a recommendation...this place is dark...the first floor may not have any natural light.  Given the rather cave like feeling throughout, maybe save this place for the Winter when hibernation and beer is a perfect excuse for a dinner.

Other notes...great beer list and decent mac & cheese.  Watch out for the upstairs (third floor) where the real locals and insiders reside...I went up there to play pool one night and it looked like I was going to have to sell my kidney for a pool stick.

An interesting dive bar place to drink beer and have a casual meal.  They have a killer burger, and the wings are great as well. The mac n cheese with blueberry cornbread is also delish, and the sweet potato fries are addictive.

This place was on Diners Drive Ins and Dives where Guy Fieri sampled the cheese steak empanadas and the duck pot pie.  I'm not really a fan of those items, personally.

Be careful on the steep staircase leading up the second floor. Perhaps more of an issue after drinking beer than before. The tables feel a little cramped and the night we were there it was freezing because they kept opening the windows despite the fact it was a chilly rainy night.  The service is just OK and the place is loud,  Overall a decent place to go if you are not feeling into something fancy.

Great place to grab a drink. Prices are reasonable and there is a good selection of beers and food. I am actually not a huge beer person but I tried the magic hat #9 and loved it! It was light but still really flavorful. I just finished lunch before going so I didn't eat, but from skimming the menu I'd definitely go back. They have duck quesadillas, TRUFFLED cheese steak empanadas, and shrimp po boys... how could those not be delicious? The staff was also super friendly!

Three levels, good deal of space. Billiards and darts on the third floor.  Good beer selection and great rotating drafts with reasonable prices.  Casual environment that welcomes suits and tshirts.  Good dog burger is good, you have to like roquefort cheese. Comes with ample potato and sweet potato fries.  Lots of food!

Tip: waitstaff doesn't come to the third floor; you have to go down to the second floor for a drink.

Truffle cheesesteak empanadas.  Need i say more?  I mean, any place that comes up with a brilliant combination of two of my favorite things in the whole world and do it well deserves a 5 star.  Ok back to this in a sec.

First of all, I have to thank Erik A. for watching "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" and strongly suggesting I check this place out.  So upon arriving into Philly and google mapping this place, it was one block away from my hotel.  AWESOME.

So walking up to it, from the outside, nothing special.  Like any other pub or bar down any regular street as you would in Manhattan.  Same as you walk in.  As if you are walking into a bar, full of patrons, and thankfully, I was able to get a seat all the way at the end.  I thought "Packed...Definitely looks like a happening happy hour place".

Once seated, a bartender came up and I asked for a Guinness.  NO Guinness.  Ok...the option for a stout like beer?  Dark Horse.  TRY IT.  I became a believer.

Then, I also got an order of the yummy aforementioned empanadas.  As I was salivating at what was going to come my way...I couldn't help but see that this place has a bustling clientele.  Definitely my kind of place.

And within a jiffy, the empanadas were served.  Crispy on the outside.  Succulent, delicious, heavenness on the inside.  WOW.  Fireworks.  Explosions of flavors.  Bravo.  YES!  YES!  YES!  To a point I couldn't stop posting on Facebook about it.

What?  YES, I am going back tonight.  Another thing I must try is the "duck confit pot pie".

    Stay tuned!

HOLY BURGER! Absolutely amazing place! Cool atmosphere. Has three floors and the top floor had a pool table if  you wanted to just hang out and have some drinks. My gf and I ate at the bar on the second floor and the lady bartender was extremely nice!

I had a a good dog burger and the burger had carmalized onions, cheese, and bacon! It also had some roquefort cheese inside the meat which was just an amazing suprise!! It came with half sweet potatoe fries and half regular fries with a homemade creamy chipotle sauce which was the cherry on top of the meal!!

Highly recommend if you want an amazing burger! They have good beers too btw

I feel like I might be the only person reviewing Good Dog who isn't a fan of the Good Dog burger, but I still really enjoyed my first visit here. Maybe I'm just not as big of a fan of Roquefort cheese as I thought I would be, but it didn't help that I asked for my burger to be on the medium-well side and it was medium at best. I thought I could power through it but I really can't take too much pink in my food. The service was great despite how crazy busy it was, so I am sure I could have asked for the burger to be cooked more but I didn't want to be a pain, especially on such a busy night.

Great beer selection and some awesome mashed potatoes, along with many other menu items that look great will certainly bring me back despite my disappointment in  the burger.

If this place isn't super packed, it's one of my top pics for food & drinks in Philly. (It's so good, everyone wants to come here.) The food here is of the highest bar-food caliber. If you're here for dinner, go with the Good-Dog-Burger which is stuffed with roquefort cheese and is utterly delicious. (It also comes with a mix of regular & sweet potato curly fries. NOM!)

This place also has a 3rd floor lounge with a pool table, darts, and digital touch-screen games.

First of all, I want my dog to be a Good Dog! Now I just have to cook up a scheme to get her on the wall. Seriously, though, I 'm going to start out this review with decor. This bar is your typical cozy hole in the wall with wood paneling and three very narrow floors. I love that there is a bar on the second floor and bar games (darts and pool) for cheap up on the third.

Drinks: reasonably priced beer list with a respectable selection. I can't say too much about this because I have really only drank here once (the first time I visited Good Dog, I wasn't 21 yet). The upstairs bar is much tinier than downstairs, but I think the coziness really helps the camaraderie with the bartenders, who I found to be very friendly.

Food: Nom nom nom. Get the Good Dog burger. I would say it is the best burger that I have had in Philadelphia, including those made at Village Whiskey. I love that the burgers are stuffed with Roquefort cheese-- it oozes out and makes for a delightful drippy, juicy, and messy meal (or maybe I'm just a pig...?). Very flavorful, a buttered bun, and an all-around fantastic burger. The fries come with it and are a mix of sweet potato and regular potato. Now I am not a big fan of sweet potatoes, so it's a good thing the boyfriend likes them-- I eat his regular fries and he eats my sweet potato. However, I find the fries to be a little too crunchy for my taste.

Overall, Good Dog is a great place to get a burger-- but beware that it gets very crowded very quickly. So call ahead or be prepared to wait... for an AWESOME burger.

I say the burgers here are great- thick, juicy patties of meat between buttery buns. Everything else was not up to the quality of the burger.

Even the fries- mixture regular and sweet potato fries is a great idea, but they are dry and most of my fry population were short and stubby. I'm not a fan of the aioli that comes with it, either; too me, it's just so bland, I feel like I'm dipping into fat.

The truffled cheesesteak empanadas that were featured on Triple D was unremarkable. Your standard, satisfactory cheesesteak stuffed into an empanada with a hint of truffle. I felt like it should've been stuffed with more meat. I ate one, but didn't care to finish the rest.

The wings- good, but also nothing special. I feel like a bar should be able to throw down fantastic wing fare, but this was just alright.

They only have a server or two on the second floor, and so sometimes you have to flag down the waiter for refills and check.

This is a cozy bar that seems to be quite popular as it was pretty busy on a Thursday around 8pm. They have small tvs, so don't come to watch the game, but you can watch the game if you can see it. The beer selection is tasty, but they could use more on tap. It was limited. The food was excellent for bar food. I had the lamb belly sandwich. Delic.

The hostess may turn you off from entering the building. She has a hautey attitude, which my friends who had been there before say she always had. Instead of saying "There's no tables available", she says "Yeah, that's not going to happen". Really? How do you speak to your customers like that? I took off a whole star for that. Hopefully the owners realize she's not made for front of house work, but until then, just try to ignore her poor attitude and get in the bar.

Very laid back bar.  I was just there for a happy hour and had a good time. Points for: good burgers (really good), good beer, and a pool table on the third floor.  Points against: its kind of on the small side downstairs and you have to be eating to get a table... also while there is a bunch of space on the third floor its is kind of annoying that you have to order from the second floor bar.

Its a good option for a small group of people... and get the burger, its really good.

Went here for dinner one night with some people when I was craving a cheeseburger. We started with the pulled pork sliders as an appetizer. They were good, the pork was tender. We also had an order of the blueberry cornbread which was great.

I had the good dog burger which I thought was good. The roquefort cheese was not what i expected so I was a little disappointed but the caramelized onions were good and the meat was good. The people I was with had the fried tomato blt and the shrimp po'boy. I had a taste of the fried tomato blt and liked it. The bacon was very smoky which I am a fan of. From what I heard, the shrimp po'boy was good but nothing special.

I would say this place is good but I wasn't blown away by it.

Good Dog often ends up being one of our go-tos on an evening in the city.  The downside to this place is that it's small and generally pretty packed, but on the upside, you can put your name in for a table.  For us at least, the wait hasn't ever ended up being that long.  You'll get bumped around a fair amount by the servers and passersby if you try to stand behind the bar stools, but it's a pretty tight place, so there's not a lot you can do in that regard.

So, I guess that started out kind of negative, but really, aside from that minor set of issues, this is a great place.  It's smallness makes it cozy.  They have a decent beer selection and their bartenders are attentive.  The servers at the tables are able to offer good suggestions for beer, food, and beyond (we were ready to move on after dinner and asked the server for a recommendation of where we could go next and he even helped us on that front -- it's the friendliness and helpfulness that's among the reasons we keep going back).

My husband and I absolutely love the burgers there.  I would say that if you enjoy the burgers at Village Whiskey, Good Dog gives them a real run for their money especially considering the Good Dog Burger comes with fries included (and that all of the goodies on top are included as well rather than a la carte).  We haven't ever had an issue where a burger wasn't cooked to our order and the combination of flavors is awesome.

Finally, if you're a dog lover, you can sit there for hours looking at all of the great black and white photos of dogs that adorn the walls.  They help to make each visit unique!

The pictures of puppies might be the biggest thing that keeps me coming back here.

That and the beers on tap. The draft list at Good Dog literally never disappoints and the location is perfect. Smack dab in Center City and close enough to Market to grab a quick lunch during the week.

The burgers are their claim to fame. HUGE, juicy mounds of beef sometimes stuffed with a spicy cheese, other times just topped with cheese, lettuce and tomato. I might have tried 8 other dishes on this menu but none of them seem to compare to the burger. Their fries are awesome too. A mixture of sweet potato and regular served with a hit or miss aioli.

I've tried the grilled cheese, fried tomato BLT sandwich, veggie burger and veggie meatloaf (I think meatloaf) and the duck quesadillas. All of them were just OK. I recently visited for Philadelphia Weekly's holiday party and the appetizers were actually pretty good. Mini pork sliders and the chicken cordon bleu bites were awesome. I also tried my first Crispin there... and my 2nd... and 3rd and 4th.

The upstairs is awesome and if you sit by the window has a great view of 15th. The downstairs gets packed but the tables are huge and they finally removed that awkward bar preventing you from sliding in and out of the benches.

Overall, pretty solid bar with average food (besides the delicious burgers)!

I've died and gone to heaven with Good Dog Bar. A serious home run in a city flooded with fantastic restaurants and bars. I would never go to Philly without having a Good Dog burger or a Dinic's roast pork sandwich. These are two unwavering facts of life.

First, Good Dog is just the perfect bar. Three levels, unassuming, phenomenal draft selection of varied microbrews, unobtrusively placed tvs, three floors, a pool table, sweet graphic design, laid back but buzzing. The perfect bar for hanging out with friends and enjoying a few pints if you ask me. So there's that.

And second, the food is just fabulous for a pub. Duck pot pie? Oh it's marvelous. The french fries - a mixture of regular potatoes and sweet potatoes - are addicting and will be gone in seconds. The burger is a masterpiece that will keep me coming back everytime. Stuffed with runny, gooey Roquefort cheese, topped with sweet carmelized onions and hoisted onto a soft hot brioche roll, it's certainly one of my favorites anywhere in the world.

Pair this creative, consistently well-executed fare with a downtown bar that has an impressive selection of craft beers and you have a not-to-be-missed bar...if you're into the whole gastropub-craft beer thing!

OMG the food was effing DELICIOUS. The aioli for the fries - droooooool.

The drink was a little expensive for what I'm used to, but then again I'm from a podunk little town in Connecticut and I do realize this is Philly. However, that root beer (whatever the fancy little name was) hit you like a train.

Our friends who live in the burbs that took us here say they have never been disappointed with anything they've eaten here - we'll be back when we come visit them and slowly eat our way through the menu ;)

Good Dog is a delicious little spot, but be prepared to pay a bit!  They have a wonderful draft list.  The decor is what makes this place with pictures of puppies everywhere!

you should get the cheesesteak empanadas, they come with a chocolate sauce that will rock you.  The chicken cordon bleu bites are good, but can be a little dry.

You should also get the mac n' cheese.  It comes with cornbread and has cornflake topping...it's amazing and one of my favorite mac n cheeses.

Have dogs, will stare. And Good Dog has tonnes of them, on the wall of course.

Sometimes I just want someone to pour me some delicious beers afters beer and leave me alone with my conversation. Thats when u go to Good Dog! I am rating this place solely on ambience and drinks, I haven't had food here yet. But from what my eyes have observed intensely while others were being served, food looked solid, smelled legit.

After a long time, as i grabbed some beer and went upstairs, played pool while  Nirvana was playing on the background, I gotta say, I had a pretty damn good time in here. I just wish they had a sour ale hiding somewhere in there for me.

I like Good Dog Bar and Restaurant because I like dogs and I like food.

The decor of Good Dog is relaxed and unpretentious and the food is good. Not "really good," not "very good," just "good," which I suppose is why they didn't name it "Very Good Dog Bar and Restaurant." Good Dog reminds me of a bastard love-child between a high-priced gastropub and a neighborhood bar. I mean bastard in the literal sense and not as a negative reflection on Good Dog. The high-priced gastropub is already married and was merely "slumming" because it's marriage had become a loveless and passionless.

I went to Good Dog for the burger since it was rated as one of Philly's best burgers in by Philadelphia magazine. The Good Dog burger is reasonably priced ($12.5) and delicious. It's "1/2 lb of house ground sirloin stuffed with roquefort cheese & topped with caramelized onions, served on a toasted brioche bun." That's right, it's stuffed with cheese! The roquefort cheese is soft and creamy with a distinct tanginess that goes well with the fattiness of the burger. The burger comes with a side of fries (half kennebec (normal), half sweet potato). I was hoping for steak fries with a distinct flavor but instead got thin and bland fries. They were underwhelming.

The biddy I was with got the mussels. They are "sautéed with capers, shallots, garlic, chipotle peppers & fresh herbs then steamed in magic hat #9." They were also "good." The sauce they came with was pretty flavorless and bland. The sautéing and steaming dulled (and destroyed) the sharp flavors I expect from capers and smoky-heat I expect from chipotle peppers. I would not recommend this dish.

I will go back since I live 2 blocks away, like the decor, and they have a salmon reuben and a lamb belly sandwich on the menu which I want to try. The burger gets 4 stars and the rest of the food gets 2 stars.

This is always a solid Center City spot for great food and a good beer selection. It has that relaxed, no-frills atmosphere that is hard to find in CC, yet it delivers on really quality gastropub style food and great and friendly service.

Three floors of awesomeness, yet this place is still packed all the time. If you go at peak times, expect to wait if you want a table, but generally there is always room to chill on the 3rd floor or surrounding the bar on the 2nd floor. It is a little annoying that there isn't a bar on the 3rd floor, but if you hunt down and server and don't mind waiting a little bit longer you can get drinks via them.

I love their vegan sloppy joe, the cheesesteak empanada, the blueberry corn bread, the beer hummus, and the thai style chicken sandwich. Actually, don't think I've eaten anything here that I didn't like. Always good drinks and drink specials, and it's always better to drink when you surrounded by photos of awesome dogs.

Cheese stuffed burger - yum! Although I must have really built it up in my head, because the thought of it tasted better than the actual thing. Still good, though!

The truffle cheesesteak empanadas were okay - kind of weird. There was too much dough and not enough filling, and I'm not sure that it went with the fruity sauce. There was just a little bit too much going on, but they were interesting to try.

Shout out to the bag of donuts that I had for dessert - you little guys were awesome! So light, fresh, and not overly sweet.

What I really loved about this place was that I wanted every single thing listed on the menu. I will definitely be back to try a few different items.

Walking into Good Dog always puts a smile on my face! Despite it being dark and divey, it always has a great vibe and the bartenders are friendly.

The pooch portraits alone put me in a good mood! The  bone shaped chalkboard beverage specials is always a nice touch.

Our group sauntered in on Friday night to pre-game before a pre-game party., thankfully we were able to snag a seat.  We ordered some food and pints, which set the wheels in motion for a great evening out on the town.  The bartender wasn' t too chatty, but she was quick and knew her beers.
My husband had the traditional burger, which is always a crowd pleaser, the side of sweet potato and regular french fries was a separate order in itself! It was huge!!
The Good Dog burger is my usual  go to order when I stop in. (Actually, all of the burgers here are top notch!) I was torn between the GD burger and the grilled cheese. I ended up getting the latter and was not disappointed, it was more of a tomato mozzarella panini than the 'traditional grilled cheese', but it was delicious!

A great spot for after work drinks and eats! I will definitely be coming back here for years to come! I believe they still have Quizzo on Wednesday nights, I haven't been to it a few years, but it is aways a good time!

So a road biker walks into the bar for a burger. Promptly gets told that bikes are not allowed in (even on an empty floor). This is surprisingly unusual for a city pouring with cyclists of all kinds. Orders a classic cheeseburger with bacon to-go, but can't get a Sprite and has to order it from the deli. Biker is forced to wait outside. Biker eats burger. Biker gives fine, fine establishment a 5-star review???

This usually wouldn't happen in real life. But these guys were exceptional. While bikes weren't allowed in the building, the wait staff did all they could to find my bike a seat. One of the managers watched it for me while I went to the deli to get a soda (which worked well since I landed up getting something better!). I presume they can't give to-go drinks to adhere to Philly's alcohol laws. Ryan (the guy up front with a beard LIKE A BOSS) was really cool to talk to, and everyone was pretty cool in general. Especially for Pearl Jam/Jay-Z weekend.

But the burger. And the fries. MOTHER OF GOD. I think my taste buds were electrocuted while eating this thing. SLAP YOUR MOTHER TWICE quality; nukes normal bar food out into orbit.

They might have laced with crack; I'm addicted and will be coming back.
