Stopped here on our way up to Boston for the weekend. Â Randomly pulled off the exit, pulled up Yelp, and picked a place out of the list that sounded decent! Â
We definitely enjoyed the meal and the atmosphere. Â I got excited when I saw my fave CT beer on the menu, I hadn't had it since my college days up in CT. Â We ordered and the food came fairly quickly. Â Everything was made correctly and tasted great. Â Burgers were great and the cobb salad looked good, although my friend said she wished it was a little bigger. Â
And then our other friend came to join us and that's kinda when the wheels started falling off. Â We couldn't get our waitresses attention at ALL. Â When we did get her attention it still took her a few more minutes for her to stop by. Â The bill took a bit longer after also so all that extra waiting sadly had to drop this place down a star. Â
If I'm ever in the Darien area again I'd def stop back though.
The Goose is a great casual family spot. I went here  for a quick dinner before i saw a movie last Saturday. My boyfriend and I had the lobster sliders which were amazing (came with three sliders). We also got the fried calamari which was not to my tasting, it came with two very spicy sauces that i didn't care for. The best item on the menu that we got was the clams casino flat bread... It was delicious! It had huge pieces of clams on top of it and thick cut pieces of bacon. The service was great and i would certainly go back again to try more on the menu!
Review Source:I almost always enjoy coming here! I have only been here for lunch and happy hour, but the food is consistently good. The cobb salad is a great go-to. Other recommendations? The calamari, the flatbread pizzas and most of the specials.
The downside? The staff (depending on who you get) can be very slow and a little snotty.
After last night's meal, I came to update my review (likely downgrading it) and discovered that I'd never made one yet... at any rate, the best way to describe the Goose is that it's "so close" but always lacking SOMEWHERE.
Last night the french fries were awful, almost like they'd just been dunked in grease long enough to make them warm. Â They were soggy / limp, and my guess is hurried for some reason.
Other than that, and perhaps my waistline thanks them for keeping my fry intake low, the meal was really good. Â Great burgers, very nice shrimp, vegetables done right, terrific bread basket, etc.
The service was also really solid, and the lovely and talented Teah made a good beer recommendation for me - but on that note, a draft is a spendy $6 (last I checked this wasn't Manhattan rent we have to pay)...
I have never been totally disgusted with this place but then I've also never walked out of there thinking they nailed it. - in fact usually I'm upset about one little detail... Â It's good for a casual meal once or twice a year when we get burned out on our other places, and of course it's a great spot to meet somebody for (pricy) drinks.
I'm going to give them another shot, if only for the truffle fries, but the Goose clearly needed some work on our second outing. The servers could not pour wine to save their lives, it was constantly dripping. It took a while to get our plates cleared.
I sent the creme brulee back and told them to take it off the bill. It tasted like cold scrambled eggs. The manager came over and talked to us, and we let her know that this wasn't the best experience. Most of the food was excellent, the wine selection is decent.
I hate to see so much potential go to waste. One more shot, Goose, or the rating drops again.
I really enjoy this place...have been twice and will go back again!
Love the atmosphere, and we were seated quickly even at 7:30 on a Saturday night...good beer selection, and the cocktails are well poured.
Hubby and I shared the calamari, which was very tasty, maybe a little overlooked...large portion as well.
I got the linguini with clams, half portion...a TON of clams, and less pasta than the whole portion, and it is delicious! My husband had the lamb chops special which he really enjoyed.
I had the root beer float for dessert, which made me happy and feel like a kid, and my husband had the crime brûlée which was decent.
Nice staff, and very good food, for fairly reasonable prices given the area of CT it is in!
Did a late Friday night dinner here. For the price, I felt dinner was a bit overvalued. Great atmosphere and live music, seems like a solid place for a couple of beers after a long work week. The dining experience gets three stars because coffee and desert made up for the underwhelming dinner.
Review Source:I love the bar scene. Â If were just reviewing the bar, I'd give it 5 stars. Â Love it. Â Great place to go for a beer and to catch-up with friends. Â The food is ok. Â Some dishes are hit or miss. Â The gnocchi was amazing. Â The service was ok, not incredible. Â For food, I still prefer 1020, but I'll definitely keep phitting up The Goose for drinks!!
Review Source:The food is good and the service has always been good as well on my multiple visits. Â I've tried the salmon, the lobster sliders and various salads which are all good. Â My companions have enjoyed the burger as well.
We've eaten in the restaurant and the bar and I prefer the more casual ambiance in the bar. Â I've not experienced the issue with children as others have complained of, but perhaps that's because we're in the bar.
My only complaint is that the bartender is a bit stingy with the alcohol in mixed drinks.
Great local watering hole with above average food. Â Bartenders always friendly and the beer selection is extensive enough to satisfy all beer drinkers. Â Seasonally changing menus keep the food exciting. chef Giorgio is always throwing down his authentic italian /international fare. to make things even better, Brandon the Exec Sous loves to spice up the menu with some phenomenal southern comfort food.
In the year that the goose has been open it has already become a darien staple, Â im positive the goose is there to stay for many years to come.
I went to dinner here on a Friday night at 8. Â There were 6 open seats at the bar yet it was a 20 - 30 minute wait to sit at the bar?? Â
The food was mediocre at best. Â The Gnocchi was extremely mushy. Â
The dining room was filled with tables of kids running around and screaming, knocking over chairs. Â The manager said the large group with 4 kids sitting to our right would be leaving in 5 minutes after we sat, the group never left.
I don't need to go back.
A very typical mildly upscale bistro on the cute strip in Darien. Â The scene was quick business lunch with our team (half of whom is in Darien, the other half in NYC):
- Excellent service
- The place is hopping at lunch -- is this a sign of how good it is?
- Solid menu with SO many choices!
- Nice atmosphere that leans more toward bistro than it does toward bar
- Everyone at our table (five folks) love their food....my burger was outstanding
We'll be back!
Yumm.. I literally declared this place my "new fave" while eating here a couple weeks ago.
Lobster sliders (mouth watering thinking about them), steak frites, goat cheese salad, and a menu that left me feeling like I could have had one of everything.
Cannot wait to go back, and am especially excited to try the brunch...
Went back! Tried the calamari- DELISH and a few more salads. Everything is great. Also tried a pom mojito- yum!
I wish that I could get more granular with the rating here. Â The inside of this place is actually pretty nice, what I wasn't happy with was the false advertising that this is a place to watch NFL football. The food is also overpriced. Â
They advertised outside that they get the NFL Sunday ticket, I showed up with a buddy to watch the games and there were two larger TV's and one tiny one. Â Someone with a larger party arrived after we did and they changed the channel from the game we requested. Â The bartender then turned the game back on every few minutes. Â We asked what the hell was going on and he said, "I'm trying to be fair to both groups". Â Sharing is cool in many places, but it ain't cool to share a TV when you came to watch a particular game. Â WTF! Â I think the better idea would be to get more TV's yo! Â Don't advertise as an NFL bar when you can't show all of the games. Â There are just too many other places to go that will play them all.
I'd give this zero stars, if possible. My friend and I had dinner there tonight and they seated us in a small room at the end of the bar, rather than the main dining room, which was virtually empty.
Our waiter seemed to be unfamiliar with the menu, claiming the onion and mushroom soup had a cream base, when it was nothing more than French onion with some mushrooms.
The soup, ordered by my friend, arrived quickly. A few minutes later a waitress came by to see if we wanted bread. Good thing, because our main courses--a salad and a burger--didn't arrive until about 45 minutes after my friend finished her soup.
As we waited for our meal the hostess seated a large, drunk, and very loud party next to us. Another table of diners left shortly after the large party was seated, once they heard the obnoxious and vulgar things these people were shouting. I don't know why the owners allowed these people to harass other customers with their sexist and bigoted comments.
When our food finally arrived the owner apologized and offered free drinks--useful but for the fact that neither of us wanted to drink. The salad looked good, but my burger was over cooked and, as another reviewer mentioned, the bun was far too large (more like the burger was too small). The fries were burnt, and it took about five minutes from when I asked for a refill on my water to when I actually received the refill.
We ordered dessert, which wasn't bad, probably because it isn't made there. I say it wasn't bad, because it tasted fine, though the chocolate cake was a bit dry, but then my friend found a hair in her cake. Not on it, but in it.
Our waiter was ignoring us, so I got the owner's attention and his reaction was more subdued than expected, as though this wasn't the first time it happened.
When we finally got the check, dessert and everything was still on it. Again, we had to get the owner over who took the check and, five minutes later, brought another without dessert. I think they should have comped the whole meal.
As we left, the owner said "I know you guys didn't have a great time, but please come back!"
There is no chance either of us will step foot in that restaurant again, and I will be telling everyone I know to stay away. I missed Black Goose when it closed, but I'll be happy to see this place go.
Much anticipation for the Goose to open, but sadly it didn't deliver. Â I suppose if you come with your friends to drink, it's great. Â We came with our kids and it was less than accommodating. Â The burger was surprisingly poor - too overcooked (asked for Med Rare) and the bun was too big. Â The salad was ok. Â I wouldn't recommend taking kids.
