When you specialize in a dish (ie grass fed beef) and offer few options outside that specialty, it needs to be amazing... Or at least really good. Unfortunately, the steak at Grass Fed isn't even average. It's boring and flavorless. I repeat, their signature dish is underwhelming in every way. Â Feel free to stop here... The other details are relatively meaningless. Â
On the bright side, we opted for the fixed Valentine's Day menu which included a decent appetizer, excellent carrot soup (bizarre that we found a steak place's vegetarian dish to be its strong suit), and mediocre desserts. Had the bread pudding been served hot, I imagine it would have been incredible. Sadly, it wasn't.
Grass Fed falls short in a city with dozens of excellent steak houses. Can't wait to see what restaurant takes their space...
Went there for valentines day, had a 9:00 reservation. Â Took us to the back, bad move.
Wait staff does not have a clue.  Very un- organized.  We had just sat down and some server with plates of food tried to serve us, then the next table.  Only to realize the food was for a different table.  Was about to spend $65 each for me and my date.  Waited another few minuets no water.  Bad vibe, place looked bad.  Got up and left.  Went to a bar across the street..  Seated right away, attentive staff great meal, played trivia  good meal.  Happy date.  This place is not a destination for sure.
Very disappointed. Had lunch and ordered their grass fed burger, medium rare and first, it was well done. Second, there was absolutely no seasoning! Come on! That's just unacceptable. Also ordered the steak salad medium, no cheese, no aioli, with balsamic and the steak was med rare to medium, a bit tough, but the pickled red onions were very good. Overall, the salad was good, not great.
Definitely would not go there again.
Went to brunch today and wasn't impressed. Â I had green eggs and no ham. Â The egg whites were scrambled WITH avocado. Â The taste wasn't great and the presentation was poor. Â I would rather see the avocado separated from the egg, or made as sauce poured over. Â The potato was really tasty though. Â My husband had the breakfast burger which was tasty. Â The doneness of the burger was a bit off. Â We ordered medium rare, but seemed to get medium doneness. Â Be warned: Â the menu was confusing. Â It said the breakfast burger has the grass fed burger plus other stuff. Â Since the next item on the menus was the grass fed burger, we took it as whatever that is in the grass fed burger is included in the breakfast burger. Â That is not the case. Â However they did bring the extras out for us upon request. Â Also the burger came with biscuit buns. Â They fall apart easily. Â No way you can pick up the burger to eat.
Food is average, but the staff is nice.
went to brunch here over the weekend. the interior and ambiance were the best things about the place. the food was super boring and bland. we had the waffle and fried chicken and the egg white dish. the egg white dish was the blandest breakfast I could hope for...it lacked creativity, taste and spice. everything was luke warm and the potoates were also boring and tasted like they were cooked an hour ago. the waffle was good but the fried chicken very average and no big deal. the service was also pretty lame. we were there around 2:00 and there were only 4 tables full so there really was no excuse. all in all it was such an average experience...with so many places to go to i wouldn't bother going back. everything left average taste in my mouth and i left totally unsatisfied.
Review Source:Want to love this place, but it was just ok.
Big, open, clean layout with super high ceilings and white-washed walls. The atmosphere, menu, and name of the restaurant all lined up for me and I was digging it.
The food: Green salad was boring, but tasted fine - focaccia was good. Brussel sprout salad was also tasty, but nothing new. Mussels with chiles, chorizo, and wine sauce was delicious - the broth was amazing and perfect for dipping. The steak was tasty... ordered medium but came out medium rare which was actually for the better. MAIN ISSUE I have is that the steak portion was TINY and no where near the portion size seen in the numerous pictures posted on yelp. Our steak was literally half the size - sad, and I totally feel gipped. Fries came as sides for both main courses, and they were just ok. A little limp, for lack of a better word. Meh. Pecan bread pudding was for dessert and was tasty, but definitely should have been served warm.
Drinks:
Old fashioned with their house made orange infused rye
Smoked black manhattan
I liked both drinks, though preferred the old fashioned.
Service was great. I could see the waitress and other wait staff checking on us, and did a great job sensing when we needed water, plates cleared, etc and when we were fine just hanging out.
In summary... with some small adjustments I think this place could be great. It felt like a new restaurant that doesn't quite have all the details worked out, and I was surprised to learn this place has been open since last July. May try again on a weeknight, will hope for a while steak this time.
I was fortunate enough to attend one of their tastings. Â In a nutshell, this place is amazing. Â I tried their steak, carrot soup, brussel salad, chicken and salmon appetizers and their bread pudding dessert. Â It was some of the best food I had in years! Â I already made a reservation for a return visit and can't wait!
Review Source:Was so excited to come here for a friend's birthday and was just left with, eh. Â The decor and restaurant itself is an open layout with a fresh, clean vibe. Â So I got there before my friend and we had a reservation for 2. Â I'm waiting and waiting and about 15 minutes go by so I get up to find my friend sitting at the bar waiting for me as the hostess couldn't put 2 and 2 together that we were for the same table. Â Really, the restaurant was empty except for 4 whole tables being occupied. Â
Drinks, the Beso Rojo - Basil Infused Vodka, Cranberry, Lime, Prosecco was delicious and while we were there a portion of the sales were going towards a charity. Â Food, so it's a 1 price deal for salad, steak and fries. Â However, it's a bit odd b/c they do have other dishes, but our waitress failed to tell us this and we had to ask. Â We decided between the 2 of us to try one steak and 1 fish which is actually mussels and were impressively good. Â For an additional side we got the butternut squash. Â The mussels & squash were the best 2 things we had all night. Â The steak was just okay, I can cook a better steak at home. Â So if you're going to call yourself a steakhouse and only offer a couple things, please make them PERFECT!!
The main attraction (steak) is very poorly executed. Â Even if properly executed, I imagine that it would be a very mediocre dish.
This place opened up in my neighborhood, and I went with my fiance with no expectations. Â The ambiance and service was good -- nothing spectacular, but nothing to complain about. Â
The problem is the steak that we ordered. Â We ordered it mid-rare. Â When it cam out, it was cooked extremely unevenly. Â Some parts were medium, some mid-rare, some outright raw like jello.
The most unappetizing issue, however, was that the steak was poorly cleaned. Â I had a great deal of sinewy silver skin that was inedible. Â Because the steak was partially raw, it was like I was chewing on one of those thick broccoli rubber-bands. Â The steak is pre-sliced and, frankly, 20% of the pieces were inedible for this reason. Â
The steak was bland. Â I've heard that the restaurant attempts to cater to a healthier clientele. Â If so, great. Â But, this is not the place to go to get a juicy, delicious, steak.
Just had a nice lunch here on a business meeting. Â Lovely white barn exterior and interior. Â It feels expansive in the restaurant..very airy.
I ordered the steak salad and my friend ordered the brussel sprout salad w grilled chicken. Â I got try my friend's salad - it was great. Â Not overly done with dressing, but good nonetheless. Â Better for you obviously without a heavy dressing.
Both were really good and very healthy. I also had a bottled coke from mexico. Â YUM
I REALLY like brussel sprouts, so I took home that salad with chicken as well. Â
I would definitely take a friend here. Good service as well. They are only open to 4:30pm so it's a definite lunch spot. Â I will have to go next time for the burger since I love my meat.
I left happy..thank you Grass Fed. Only thing missing is the actual cow in the window :) Â lolz
Walked in for two at 830 on a Friday and were seated easily. Â The wait staff was friendly but our waitress seemed to have enjoyed a lot of Valium. Menu is limited which is part of the schtick - steak, fish and chicken pre fixes. Â However the fish of the day was actually mussels - I would expect a filet of something, mussels doesn't cut it.
We had the steak tartar app which was very good, but a bit hard to mix the egg with the steak in the small 'jar'. Â Salad with pre mix was good quality greens, nice kick but simple dressing. Â Entrees-wise the steak good, not great, but the chicken was rather lacking in flavor - well cooked but the veggies had more impact than the seasoning.
The staff did bring us an unsolicited bonus sweet potato and veal bacon side which was great. Â So of five items, 2 were great, 2 were ok, ands 1 was eh.
It's close to home so may try again. Â But won't go out of our way - just not sure it's worth the money.
We were excited to try a new local restaurant, even though we hadn't heard great reviews.
The restaurant was much more casual on the inside than we expected, which was fine. We sat at a high top in the back. We met a bunch of friends and started with cocktails. All were really good - off to a good start. We ordered the steak tartare for an app and that was pretty good too.
For the mains, you get a choice of steak, chicken or fish. Surprisingly, the fish choice was mussels. We all ordered different things so we could try all of the choices. We also ordered the squash (excellent) and cauliflower (ok).
My friend got the steak medium and it came out medium rare and my husband got it med rare and it came out really rare. I couldn't even eat it. I also couldn't eat my chicken. It was bland, just not good. Contrast that to the mussels, which were excellent. Best thing anyone had.
If you are going to have three things on the menu, they should all be excellent. 1 out of 3 isn't good. We were disappointed and probably wouldn't return unless we knew mussels were the fish choice.
My boyfriend and I celebrated New Year's Eve here last night with their Prix Fixe menu and really enjoyed ourselves! Â We had a 9:30 reservation, showed up a little early and they sat us immediately. Â The decor took me by surprise, for a steak place it was really bright and airy with white paneling and cute topiaries. Â
The meal let us sample what looks like most of their regular menu. Â The first course were the brussels sprout salad, black kale & dates and steak tartar. Â The brussels sprout salad was so good my boyfriend didn't even know he was eating brussels sprouts. Â The kale was by far the MOST amazing thing I think I ate last night. Â The flavor was so delicious I could have made a meal on the kale alone. Â The tartar was also delicious but a little stringy. Â
The next course was their house salad which was ok. Â Mine was a little over dressed but the homemade bread was delicious. Â
As a palate cleanser we were served Prosecco sorbet which was a nice segue into the main course.
The main course was their sirloin with a plate full of fries, curry cauliflower and romanesco. Â They were unfortunately out of the butternut squash we were expecting. Â The meat was good, my only complaint was that they cut it for you and it was REALLY salty. Â The fries were crispy and warm. Â The star this course was the curry cauliflower with chickpeas. Â It was seasoned really nicely i loved the curry flavor. Â
To finish the meal we were served apple pie with salted caramel ice cream and fresh berries. Â I was so stuffed by the end I could barely even take a bite of dessert. Â The salted caramel ice cream was my favorite part of dessert and I would definitely order that again.
All in all we had a really nice time. Â I saw other reviews that they felt it took a very long time to get their food and we actually witnessed a few people complaining about this while we were enjoying our dinner. Â It seemed that the kitchen was unprepared for a full house and they were out of something on their set menu which was disappointing but we will probably return to try the squash. Â I think the owner was there and I wish he would have worked the room a little bit more. Â He went up to the tables on either side of us to ask how everything was but didn't acknowledge us and I would have loved to tell him how much we were enjoying his restaurant.
I have been to Grass Fed for their burger and their salads. They did not disappoint. The burger was delicious and featured even more delicious fries! I am a HUGE fry fan and they really great ones. They are thin and cooked to perfection. Love! The burger was very tasty, tender, and overall great!
On a different visit, I had the steak salad which was also just as great. It came with arugula and a side of bread. The portions were bigger than what I normally eat, but still perfect for my dinner mates. Still delicious and now I suggest Grass Fed when meeting up with friends!
CORRECTION: Grass Fed offers a full bar for your pleasure. They do allow you to bring your own wine though for a small corkage fee.
Great place. Â Probably one of the best burgers I have ever had. Â You can't beat the location, and the decor of the place is very fitting for it's name. Â I love the fact that everything is made in-house here. Â I'm not a huge foodie, but this place makes you appreciate all the little things they do to differentiate themselves from the usual dining and restaurant experience. Â Definitely worth checking out. Â
Oh, and the staff is extremely friendly and knowledgable about all items on the menu.
We came here for Sunday brunch and couldn't resist ordering the Chicken & Waffles (yes all three of us did).
The waffle is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. It comes with delicious sage butter and maple syrup on top. In hindsight, I should've gotten the syrup on the side. The syrup made the waffle soggy and a bit overly sweet. The chicken was crunchy and moist, so I was a little disappointed to only get two pieces. You MUST ask for hot sauce. At first glance the green sauce seems a bit weird (I was thinking tabasco), but it's so tasty that we asked if they would bottle it up and sell it to us.
We also ordered their house made sausage and their bacon. Both are extremely salty, which went well with the waffles once we ran out of chicken. If you're picturing really crispy bacon, you'll be disappointed. What you get is thick, fatty, and meaty, but not crunchy at all.
Overall, I'd come here again for brunch and MAYBE try ordering something else.
I went to grass fed for a meal with my dad.
I had been a month or so prior and enjoyed just some drinks while I was waiting for my seat at hot chocolate to become available. Â
The drinks are all really neat and come in a little 8oz bottle.
I had a campfire cocktail with a marshmallow kinda flavor in it.
Delicious.
It seems like there's only one choice! The steak! However the waitress did advise us that we had option of chicken and there are also sides and starters for $6 each.
We both ended up getting the steak which was cooked PERFECTLY.
I had read some of the reviews on yelp and was slightly concerned about the timing or wait being too long but everything seemed to be timed appropriately with no long wait between the salad and the entree.
I would like to go back. Â The ambiance is really open and bright. Â Much different than you'd expect from a place where steak is the primary option.
They get points for their ethical food stance, but I can't manage more than three stars here.
I came here tonight for dinner because I had a Scoutmob and was really curious about the difference between grass fed and regular steak. Â I was very surprised to realize THEY ONLY OFFER ONE CUT OF STEAK and it's the sirloin which I've never been super partial to. Â More of a ribeye guy myself.
It would have been nice to be able to pick the cut that I wanted. Â Or have any choice at all really.
The salad was good though! Â Arugula and figs, mm.
$25 for a few rather small slices of steak, ok fries and a small salad was way too much to go back without the Scoutmob. Â If you go for the steak, go because you support the cause, not because you want to be wow'ed.
I was the first of my party to arrive so I sat at the bar. The bartenders were shy - which is not an desirable trait for that position. I got one of their signature drinks which donated a portion of the proceeds to charity - YAY!!
The friends arrived and we sat. Our waitress was sweet and attentive. We got their staple meal: salad, steak and fries. Which is a steal for $25.
Salad: fresh mix of several greens, light dressing with this amazing grilled bread.
Steak: perfectly cooked medium but a bit tough. Nice sauce but very little of it.
Fries: Fresh, thin, but a bit soggy.
I do love grass fed beef and thought their steak didn't do it for me, I may go on a Monday night for burger night.
This is my boyfriend and I after biting into our food at Grass Fed:
<a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2F2nJkE.gif&s=f68b50fc6510f287c0639a6a7327624e9c69a04acff846985ca8e57887abef08" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://i.imgur.com/2nJkE…</a>
He ordered a pour-over coffee and the fried chicken and waffles. Â I ordered steak and eggs with toast and potatoes. Â Everything was delicious, though next time I will be getting the chicken and waffles (and probably a pour-over coffee too) for myself... I had order envy. Â Everything tasted fresh and was properly seasoned. Â For condiments, they had fresh ketchup, honey butter, apple butter and I think some raspberry jam. It was awesome.
I think my favorite thing about this place was that the prices were reasonable for brunch (though I previously lived in NYC, so I could just be massively jaded) and that the place was not at all pretentious when it easily could be. Â It was clean-looking and bright and was a pleasant place to sit and enjoy a meal. Â Staff was also very friendly.
We'll be back.
Chicago has always been a meat town and a destination for anything steak related. What's been happening recently too is that new ways to eat and enjoy meat have also been popping up in town. Grass Fed is one of those as it brings a very small and simple menu (one choice!) to a cool and classic country feel to Bucktown. I really liked the setting, long and narrow with high ceilings, white everything - wood paneled walls, tables, chairs, a nice curved bar in the front with the menu on chalkboard. I hear there's even a patio in the back. There are no paper menus as everything is on the wall (and on other smaller boards throughout).
Speaking of menu, we went on a Monday which is burger night, so in addition to the $25 steak meal (with salad and fries) they offer a burger for $12. They have three sides and three starters listed on the board that change frequently. I don't remember everything that was available but we decided on the spaetzle, cauliflower and brussel sprout salad to start. Brad was the lone steak order as Kate and I did the burger deal.
We enjoyed the starters though the cauliflower was by far the best dish with a nice dose of spice. I bounced back and forth between the spaetzle and brussel sprout salad trying to figure out which one I liked more or which one I wanted to eat again. The shaved brussels were nice and clean and refreshing but kind of lack a lot of flavor punch. The spaetzle was more fun with various textures and flavors. But I find it hard to eat an entire dish of spaetzle and feel good about it. The side salad that came with Brad's steak was pretty bland and uninteresting but did provide a few greens for the table to go with all the meat. And the greens served with the burgers were equally disappointing and had way too much dressing.
But we came to eat meat and that's the most important. The star of the meal was probably the steak (the one bite I had) but right behind that was the fries and ketchup. The ketchup was so good (infused with jalapenos) that Kate had a buy a bottle (not offered) to bring home. I liked my burger but it wasn't anything to write home about or make a trip for. It was definitely juicy, and probably too much so. Nice meat and flavor but way too messy.
I liked our time and meal at Grass Fed. It's a cool spot in the heart of Bucktown doing something a little different. The food overall was good, with the best dish being the steak (thank goodness) and fries. The concept is interesting but I think they recognize they need to expand the menu options in order to appeal to more people (they have a really good looking brunch and lunch menu so it might already be in the works). It's fun and affordable and cool place to have a meal.
I have wandered past Grass Fed many times on my walk to the bus stop, but never had a chance to go in until this past weekend, when I was looking for a brunch spot with friends. All the usual places you'd expect were booked for at least an hour, so we kept walking until we happened upon this cute little place!! I was really surprised that there wasn't a long wait at 11AM on a Sunday - especially after experiencing their delicious menu. I have a feeling the long waits aren't too far behind once more people get wind of this place.
I initially just wanted to try this place because the decor was so fresh and cute, and at least most of the time that's a pretty good indication that similar attention will be paid to the food as well.
I got a cappuccino to start out, and it was made perfectly. Then came my "green eggs and no ham" omelette, which was amazing. The toast was made with homemade bread with sea salt granules on top - SO GOOD. Â It's always nice when the vegetarian options aren't just sloppy afterthoughts to the rest of the menu. Especially for a place that's themed around beef.
I'll definitely be back for more!
Holy cow, this place is totally, wait for it, wait for it....Mediocre. Yup. Just that.
Went on the first burger night, it was good, whatever, it was a burger but the service was weird and they didn't tell us it was burger night but when I asked were very excited we knew about it.
Nothing wrong with it but with the abundance of truly great places in Chicago, there is no need to go back.
i wanted to give this a 5 star reveiw but I can't , I was so looking forward to this restaurant becuase I only eat grass fed beef. Â I went there with my lips watering waitng for a steak that would resemble Morton's or Gibson's but better for you, instead I got a bland cooked, I guess what you would call prime rib very bland and not anything what I was expecting. Â PLEASE PLEASE get the owners to step up the grass fed steak selection , whole foods has great grass fed steaks, most people would be happy to pay 35 dollars for a great steak dinner!! please
work on the meat and they will come.
The accounts in my post are completely accurate and true and I have photos to prove it. Â I will begin by saying it DON'T GO TO GRASSFED. If you're interested in the horror story that is my dining experience continue reading...
For starters, the décor is lovely and whatever restaurant comes in after this forsaken place closes will have a good start - that is if the place isn't cursed.
I ran 12 miles on Sunday and I wanted meat. Â I was hungry at 11:00, so I went home got fancy and walked to Grassfed. Â The hostess said the wait would be 25 minutes and although my stomach was grumbling I was excited to try it out and I waited... waited, until 30 minutes later we sat down! Waitress came over and took our drink order we also asked for the cheese platter. 10 minutes later she comes back with drinks, spills it on my dress and says the cheese plate is only for dinner. Â We then decided to order the Steak Salad - MEDIUM steak and the Scrambled eggs, medium well steak and potatoes. The waitress said, "we're a little backed up so give us extra time." I've worked in restaurants and my boyfriend actually managed one for years so we understood and expected to wait some time. Â
ONE HOUR LATER... no jokes, no exaggerations ONE HOUR went by with no food. Â The waitress came by and apologized and my boyfriend and I made jokes because what else could we do. Â Then my boyfriend said "another round please" and the waitress brought him a beer... my drink was nowhere. I thought she misunderstood so I asked for my drink specifically. Â Which took 7 minutes (yes I made notes at the restaurant what else was I going to do for an hour?) Then a man dressed in khaki shorts and a shirt came to our table and said "sorry guys we're backed up we'll make significant changes to your check though" Â He didn't introduce himself, didn't get his name, nor did I care I wanted food!
FINALLY I got... something...food maybe? *Look at the photos I posted and let's play a game - where's the meat in the salad? Do you see it? And if you do is that Medium? Okay, now look at the next photo are those scrambled eggs? No. Is that Medium Well Steak? No. *
I know food. Â I love food. Â I have volunteered at a soup kitchen and gave better service and served better food. This place is terrible. Â In Chicago, only the strong survive. Â Too many mistakes and serious ones. Â Here's the end of the story - our bill got changed 3 times. First, they took off my meal. Â Then my boyfriend pointed out that he refused to eat a fried egg and rare steak so they took off his meal. Â Then we just paid for drinks, but the waitress didn't know how to use the iphone credit card machine properly so we got charged - TWICE!!!
Again, look at the photos, feel my irritation, and do NOT go to this place. Â This location needs something better.
Here's a joke I came up with while waiting for an hour - "This place is called Grassfed because you'll wait so long and have such bad food that you'll want to eat grass..."
While paying for my Dailey Method class across the street I saw the sweet white scalloped banner of Grassfed. With their pretty topiaries outside I was immediately wondering what this place was.
I hopped on down after class to check it out....great space inside. Very light, spacious, huge ceilings, bright. The owner was there and was also my waiter this afternoon. He was very gracious and accommodating. I had the grassfed burger with fries...I was a bit thrown off by the oddly tasting ketchup...but what we get everywhere in America is Heinz so we're used to the red 40 stuff. The fries also seemed undercooked and too hard in the middle even though they were hot...I don't know what this was all about.
He noticed I took the gouda cheese off the burger and felt bad so he made sure to bring a pot de creme over for me. I am very picky about deserts and rarely like anything very much....I did not care for the texture of the pot de creme, but the ice-cream on top was totally amazing. I don't know if it was carmel, or chocolate, or espresso but it was fab.
I love places where the owners are present and he did it for me. The food wasn't the most out of this world but I believe in giving places a few trys when you can tell their owners are around and they care. The latte was amazing by the way, I had it iced. Simple and delicious.
It does seem odd to me that most of the reviews that are one star or two all barely have reviews....and to the lady who said this was a knockoff of some French place. Welcome to America, without competition we would be stuck with only McDonalds, Starbucks, and Comcast. If L'entrecote the ONLY place that is allowed to serve steak frites? non.
This place is great, if your expectations are properly managed. Grass Fed is to Gibson's as Big Star is to Frontera. Like Big Star they make a lot of compromises to deliver great food in a neighborhood environment, cramped space, and at a serious value. But they offset those compromises by excelling at everything they do. Don't go there unless you want steak. That's pretty much all they serve and there is only one on the menu. It is Steak Frites or grass fed sirloin and a mound of fries. all dishes come with a salad and crostini. They have a few appetizers which all feel like creative vegetable side dishes.
The steak, fries, and salad are great. The steak has been properly prepared every time I was there. It's often a tad underseasoned, but if you ask they will serve you a little ramekin of flaked salt to sprinkle on top. They really should just bring the salt with every order because it is so good this way. They also serve a nice little wine sauce that reminds me of earth and flowers. The sides... er appetizers... are creative, lovely, and yummy.
They have decent wine by the carafe (its zin from a bottle). But skip it and go to their really great little wine list - 5 whites, 10 reds, all well-known smaller California vineyards and priced attractively. We had the Saldo Zin last night but were excited to see Turley, Paul Hobbes, and Chateau Montelana on the list as well. (note: if you don't know Chateau Montelana, see the movie Bottle Shock)
The trouble is still the service. The steak oddly comes out in two portions - you get one small individual portion and then a large family style portion a few minutes later. This system has problems including managing the expectations of diners and delays between servings. I don't understand it, and I think they should ditch it. It doesn't seem to add much value when done right and it's likely to turn diners off who don't know how to process it (an experience shared by most first time visitors). This is the reason I am giving it 4 stars and not 5.
Finally, what I love about this place is that it is a simple steak restaurant with a formula that really should work in a neighborhood. I hope it succeeds and the quality stays high. If it does, we will be regulars.
Grass fed offers a $25 steak, and as far $25 steaks go, it's well worth the price. But the service was iffy and that really bothered me, especially since the place was nearly empty on the night we dined there.
Let's start with the positives. Grass fed only sells one thing, Steak. And the Steak is delicious. The $25 fixed menu includes a delicious salad, and Sirloin steak that is served with fries. The salad was incredible. Everything was fresh and delicious. The Steak was cooked to perfection. It wasn't the best cut of meat I've ever had, but what do you want for twenty five bones. They serve the steak and fries in two servings. Our server said they do this to assure you get a steak that's hot and fresh. It was a different take that I kind of enjoyed. No complaints about the food.
The service? Well that was another story. It was a Friday night and after a hellish week of work, I was in the mood to get my drink on. I started out with a tasty dark stout and I had a hankering for more. Unfortunately, our server was hanging out by the kitchen our entire meal. Between the inside and outdoor patio area, four tables were occupied. It looked like the entire wait staff was having a wonderful time kIbitzing with each other by the kitchen while my wife and I stared at our empty glasses. It's disappointing. I really enjoyed the food and I would have loved to give Grass Fed a more positive review.
Here's the bottom line: Grass fed has the makings of a great eatery. I can't think of anyplace else that offers this kind of quality food for the price. The level of service was unfortunate. As you can tell from most of my reviews, it doesn't take a lot to make me happy. Well over half my review's are three stars or more. All I ask is, good food, fun atmosphere and a full glass. Is that too much to ask?
I am kind of confused by this restaurant. The meal that I had was phenomenal. I am a big steak fan, as was my date. When I found out that they also had steak tartare as one of the starter offerings, I immediately jumped at the chance to have even more meat during the meal. It was served with quail eggs in a nice warmly toasted ciabatta (?). Excellent flavor, for real.
The salad that came out as part of the prix fixe was totally refreshing. It had some mint and maybe fennel? It was a perfect summer salad served with another piece of warm focaccia that my date stole from me. Well actually I let him have it since I'm cutting back on the carbs.
When our steak arrived, we were very excited. The only option for steak here is a 8 oz Sirloin. There is also a half plate of nicely prepared French-style frites. The steak has a greenish Bearnaise sauce that complemented it nicely. The only beef (excuse the pun) I have is that there really isn't much of a choice in terms of your cut of steak. In fact, there is no choice. It's nice to be able to choose additional starters or sides (which all sounded delicious, by the way), but overall I would have loved to have been able to pick a filet over a sirloin, or just have more choice in general.
The funniest part of the evening was that my date and I were looking at our small plates of steak and fries and thinking that we'd like a little bit more for the $25 we were spending. All of a sudden, our waiter came out with another plate of...you guessed it...steak and frites! It was a kitchen miracle. And by the end, we were stuffed for sure.
Overall I loved my experience. My champagne and wine were both excellent. And the steak was outstanding, which is good because it's the only thing on the menu!
As the name suggests, Grass Fed has amazing grass fed steaks. Â The steaks are served pre-fix style with a salad and fries. Â The steak and fries come in two equally split portions so that it does not get cold while you are eating. Â One of the people in our party was a vegetarian and really enjoyed the starters too. Â
The drinks are very good. Â I had the watermelon with jalapeno infused tequila. Â They infuse the tequila on the shelves behind the bar in the restaurant.
For desert I had the Rhubarb crumble with asparagus ice cream. Â Both the ice cream and the crumble were perfectly done. Â
The atmosphere is great and would be a perfect place to go for a date or out with friends.
