This stylish bar, featuring 1890s upscale decor and jazz every night, is located on Grand in the Crossroads Arts District. Â Although primarily a bar, rather than a restaurant, they do have a few food choices. Â We had the cheese tortellini with a side salad along with the hummus plate and the cheese and crackers. Â With a bottle of wine, it was an enjoyable dinner --- better than we had anticipated. Â But with so little food variety, I would not want to have dinner there often. Â Other fine restaurants are nearby on Main St. Â Dinner at one of those restaurants conveniently can precede an evening of jazz with snacks and drinks at the excellent Green Lady Lounge.
There is a parking lot next door and behind the restaurant. Â Unfortunately those lots are not owned by the restaurant. Â If you choose to park there, you do so at your own risk. Â But there is an easy on-street solution to that problem. Â If you walk out the back entrance of the restaurant and then through the parking lot behind the restaurant, you will get to McGee St., which has diagonal angle parking along the street. Â We arrived for the jazz performance at 5:30 pm, and there was plenty of parking on McGee. Â When we returned to our car later in the evening, there was only one free space left. Â If you get there early, McGee is a good parking choice. Â Otherwise your best bet might be over on Main St., where there are some lots (but be careful to avoid the private lots).
Everything about the Green Lady Lounge, including the excellent jazz and elegant atmosphere, reminded me of the days when I lived in much larger cities. Â Thanks to the other Yelp reviews for alerting me to this wonderful addition to the Kansas City nightlife scene. Â The evening we were there, the jazz was by the Lambert Trio. Â They are impressive, serious jazz musicians.
Sexy, Swanky, and Sophisticated. Â That's how I would describe Green Lady Lounge. Â Red walls and copper ceiling, the bar on one side with round red booths on the other, and some tables in the back. Â The layout is great because you can sit closer to the front where the acts play or you can sit further to the back, which is what I like to do because I want to enjoy the music, but still hold a conversation. Â The musicians seem to be legit.
Service was top notch and seems to be a group effort amongst the cocktail servers. Â Al were friendly and efficient. Â I browsed the cocktail list, but opted for a glass of wine. Â I thought the list of wines by the glass was decent. Â
I think Green Lady Lounge is a great spot in Kansas City. Â It's a great spot to unwind with some friends, enjoy some drinks, sit back and enjoy some live music. Â If you love atmosphere as much as I do, then this is the place to be.
Things that are awesome at Green Lady Lounge: The music. The service. the atmosphere. The prices. The crowd. I really don't know what you could ask for beyond that.
The newest jazz bar in town, it still manages to feel like a well established institution. From the look, It could have been here for 100 years instead of the maybe 6 months they've got under their belt. I think that speaks volumes.
Though you can certainly stick around in the front and sit directly next to the musicians and really soak in their sound, I'm more likely to be found in the back, Â letting the tunes create a great soundtrack for a night of getting rowdy with my friends. That's not to say the musicians aren't talented, because they are amazing, but more my personal tastes. I'm not one to just sit and listen to music. It's great that this spot accommodates both options.
I've been told they have fancy drinks, but I've stuck to beer or whiskey. I'll have to go back and scope out the craft cocktails.
I feel urbane, sexy and sophisticated while drinking at Green Lady Lounge, and I never want to stop. It's skyrocketed to one of my favorite bars in town. Check it out!
I had the pleasure of visiting this joint on a late Saturday night. The lights are dim so it made it difficult to keep my eyes open after a long day, but that's my problem :( I order a Moscow Mule, the drink was great, probably dangerous if your feeling thirsty. The waitress we had was very bright and lively and took great care of us. There wasn't any music but I would imagine a solo piano would add to the environment perfectly. Overall a good place, I wouldn't mind going back when there is a piano player.
Review Source:I love secret locations! Little places that no one knows about. Sometimes I tell people about it and sometimes I don't. I will this time.
Kansas City has known to be a place that is apart of jazz history. It is nice to go to a place and feel like you stepped in time in all the right places but keep some modern conveniences. When you walk into the door, it's like stepping back into a speakeasy. There are original 20-50 velvet lamps with gold accents everywhere and red everything - the walls, the seats, and floor. You almost feel like you are taking a step back into time. There are electronic candles all around and great lighting. I like the electric lighting too. It looks real, and I don't have to worry about setting myself on fire wile drinking. Then, there is all of these spectacular sounding speakers hidden  EVERYWHERE. The band is typically plugged in and they use these old chrome microphones. It is pretty cool.
The Moscow mule and dark and spicy are my favorite cocktails. It has a pretty fabulous single malt selection and great specialty crafted cocktails. The stuff on tap is pretty good also with a large nod to local breweries.
I say with no cover charge, great music, pretty atmosphere, and good drinks. I will continue to go - forever!
This place is tight. The story? I'm flying solo in KC on a Thursday night. It's Big 12 championship week (not why I'm there) and I asked the hotel bartender, what's worth checking out around here? He recommends two places in walking distance, and the bartender at the first also recommends this place. So, I had to check it out. As soon as I walk in, I just loved the vibe. All red walls, red carpet and red velour booths with low light. Good live 5 piece jazz band in the corner. This place just oozed old skool swank and comfy. It's fairly large for a lounge and was busy but not packed. The bartender was quick with the drinks and poured 'em stiff. I think they serve food, but I had already been to Jack Stack and was just there for the scene. I wasn't dissapointed. This place is defninately worth a visit.
Review Source:From the outside the place looks nothing. When you get in, it reminded me of a mafia red restaurant. The waitress let us sit wherever we wanted, which I appreciate. The highlight of the place is the jazz. A piano, drums and a bass were playing when we got there. Unfortunately the drinks weren't as great as we expected. Mine was an acid and tart martini and my couple's was a strange drink that came in a tin cup.
Loved the atmosphere
This is what Kansas City is about; sitting in an unassuming bar that you might not even notice just driving by, but open those doors and you are greeted with some of KC's best jazz. Â The music is great and the drinks are strong enough to give it 5 stars. From a Kansas City native, this is the place to go if you are looking for a great, easy going time. None of the snobby pretentiousness you might find on the plaza, none of the frat boys you might find at westport or Power & Light. Just good people having a great time and listening to good music
Review Source:This is a sophisticated and well decorated establishment. Â The few times I have been in the jazz is almost as excellent as the clientele, neither overtakes the a conversation, but their presence is felt. Â I found the bar staff to be friendly, intelligent, and to have a good sense of humor.
I always look for a bar that has good drinks and good people and this is it. Â I could spend hours at the Green Lady sipping cocktails and talking with people. Â If you are looking for a place to recharge and relax this is it. Â Thanks Green Lady.
Swanky not snobby. I really enjoyed my evening out with a stop at the Green Lady Lounge.
It is incredibly spacious. I love the decor, dark red walls with soft lighting and a beautiful tin tile ceiling. Â I can see coming here on a "date" with my hubs or like we did out with friends. Â There is plenty of seating for groups and smaller booths for couples.
The cocktail menu seems to have a drink for everyone, including me. I usually drink whiskey and/or beer but with my friends ordering cocktails I buckled and ordered the Green Lady. It was kind of a "girly" drink as it tasted like apple pie in a glass but nice nonetheless. Â
Our server was good. Â She tried her best to answer our questions regarding different drinks and what they did or didn't have in stock. Â I appreciated that she kept the water glasses filled. Â The music that evening was really good. Â We could hear the trio well in the back of the place. Â But it wasn't too loud that we couldn't carry on a conversation. Â
All in all, my husband and I were talking about the place after we were home and agreed it is a must visit again. Â We were impressed with the decor, the service, the prices and the overall relaxed atmosphere.
First i must say, this place has the best bartender in town. She may be a close friend of mine, but she's great! I love the decor and the ambiance of this place. It is such an improvement from what it used to be and Maxx Groove knows what he's doing on the piano. The drinks are reasonable and last night they had Cupini's lasagna, meat or vegetarian for $4, dine-in or carry-out. They are working on their new menu but in the mean time, Cupini's is a great choice! I'm not sure if this is availabel every night so if/when you go, know this may not be available but I'm sure what is will be delicious!
Review Source:I usually like to visit a place two or three times before awarding the coveted "five," but I just don't see how Green Lady can screw it up based on my one visit. Â Unless they hire a DJ and begin serving natty lite and vodka crans in plastic cups, they can't lose any stars. Â
The atmosphere is pretty sweet! Â Dark, candlelight, swank, tin ceiling, space, romance. Â The bar is long . . .so if the jazz duet is playing at the front by the door, you and your boo can go sit in the back and carry on a nice, quiet conversation with no interruption from the band and vice-versa (I hate it when people are loud in a music venue). Â
Servers are extremely professional and attentive!  The beer selection is pretty good, with several yummy tap selecitions.  As well, they offer some kind of deli-type food and appetizers.  I guess if I had to say ONE negative thing, it would be to  move the kitchenette to the back . . .but I don't think there is a back.  It just kind of puts a glitch in the perfection of the overall aura. Â
This reminds me of R-Bar (sniffle).
I have driven by this place dozens of times and never knew from the simple exterior that there was a great little Jazz club hidden in there. Â The decor is upscale, somewhat elegant and even a little eclectic. Â Service was great, the server was quick and responsive although we were at a table at the very end of the room. Â There is a good selection of specialty drinks along with a decent selection of various beer. Â The live Jazz band was great, it was loud enough to hear but not so loud we could not have a good conversation over drinks.
The clientele is a good mix of well dressed business professionals from Downtown along with the Crossroads crowds in jeans. Â I would suggest checking the Green Lady Lounge out, great for a date or just meeting friends to enjoy the Jazz.
Wow. Â Just wow. Â I can't believe this is where Balanca's used to be. Â It looks so much better now! Â This establishment has been on my to-try list for a few weeks and after trying to go to Anton's Taproom last Saturday and finding out there was a 2.5 hour wait, my friends and I moved Green Lady Lounge to the top of my list. Â Since it was fairly early in the evening, there was absolutely no wait. Â The decor was a beautiful surprise transformation from the bar that was housed here previously. Â It was dark with a speakeasy vibe and a house band playing. Â We picked out a cozy little booth in the corner and were immediately greeted with drink menus. Â The prices were comparable to other bars in town, not too low, not too high. Â I went with the Dark & Stormy, it was very refreshing. Â We also ordered off The Good You's food menu. Â I got the Kansas City's Best Burger with warm potato salad. Â I have to tell you, it was the best burger I have ever had! Â Serious! Â I'm not pulling any punches, it was downright delectable! Â I would definitely recommend this place to others. Â I love the atmosphere, the pricing, the food and the drinks. Â Plus, John Scott (formerly of Scott Fitness) has a hand in this, just with that information alone you know it's a great place to be!
Review Source:I LOVE the Green Lady! A bunch of girlfriends and I went here for a Saturday night and we were all blown away by what a hidden gem we had uncovered. Felt a lot like if Czar bar and R Bar (God Rest it's Soul) merged together into one fantastic spot to listen to great live music, enjoy stiff cheap drinks, enjoy fabulous people watching and feel like a cool jazz cat in the sexy red interior. This place attracts a really interesting mix of people, definitely something for every one, with a really friendly laid back vibe where everyone leaves any pretentiousness or attitude at the door and shares $4 dollar cocktails under the dim lights enjoying really some stellar live jazz performances. Lot's of comfy booths for canoodling with your sweetie and a really great long bar makes mingling and meeting new friends a breeze. Check this place out! You will feel and maybe be a little cooler after you do.
Review Source:We popped in for a drink Sunday evening on the way to dinner. There's was good music flowing from the Piano Man and excellent cocktails flowing from the bar. We didn't eat but we did take a look at the menu. GoodYou is hard at work and Ms Daniels is up to her yummy-looking tricks again. Drinks and eats were all wearing very attractive price tags.
Just before we left, a lady from the audience joined the Piano Man. This chick was channeling some serious Billie Holiday and hitting every note. Thought for a moment we had stepped into a time warp, and enjoyed every bit of it.
My holidays were spent drinking...
From Halloween through New Years, I hit every bar in town, living it up and gulping it down, from Manifesto to Harry's to Charlie's to Tanin. January became the Blue Monday after The Lost Weekend of Thanksgiving through New Year's Eve. Â Had I really exhausted my resources? Â Was my "lush" just too much for this town, anymore?
Then I heard about Green Lady.
"We're heading over there, tonight," my accomplices informed me. "Lowry's playing, they've got food, and we want you to join us."
We met near the KC Star building, it was a warm night for January, and the city lights were crisp and bright in the (not so wintery) air. Â And we walked in to one of the coolest rooms in the city...
"I think they have decorated this place to match the inside of my brain...", I wondered, aloud.
Red walls. Â Dark carpet. Â Low lights. Old-school booths that weren't too deep, weren't too private, and allowed viewing of the whole room. Â Dark metal tin on the ceiling, and every lamp had a shade older than my own vintage (late 60's).
"I want to live here..."
"Well, you can stay as long as you need," was our server's reply, "At least until closing time..."
She took our drink orders. Â Accomplices and I had our drinks in hand in no time.....and I certainly enjoyed the strength of my Old Fashioned.
But, we were starving. Â And what's this? Â Best Burger in Town? Â Actually, yes. Â 3 of them, devoured off of the neatly presented plates.
Lowry shows up and starts tickling his ivories, so to speak, and around that point, the place starts filling up : A varied crowd of young urbanites, aging jazz-scene appreciators, couples on dates impressing each other with their taste, groups of folks seeing what the fuss of the place was all about. Â It was crowded, but not impossible to move, not impossible to people-watch, not impossible to flag down another drink....make it two.
"We need to do a video here," I mentioned about my band. Â "It looks like a set that was built for that very purpose : retro, yet modern, with all sorts of sexiness, yet comfortable."
"You should write a Yelp review," said Female Accomplice.
"It's been awhile since I've done a good one," I agreed. Â "This one may be the one that brings me back..."
"You need to earn that Elite Badge," said Male Accomplice.
"I know...but I've been in a haze, as of late...this place is reminding me why I started writing them in the first place. Â I really don't want to leave!".
But, through the music, the laughter, the dark glances and lively conversations, we made our way out, exiting like a modern Rat Pack of Three, shaking hands and saying goodbye to folks on our way out, all to the question of : "Why are you leaving so soon?"
"I'll be back, believe me." Â And we were off into the night.
Great relaxed ambiance; it's more speakeasy-ish. Â And they do a great variation of a Dark & Stormy.
Mark Lowrey was doing his solo piano performance on Friday:
<a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/green-lady-lounge-kansas-city?select=XtykkWiT5NafhN1XUoUGlQ#V-vkOwi7Elz_ME7DdBIWgw">http://www.yelp.com/biz_…</a>
Which was good, but the acoustics were not so great: The piano sounded "muddled." Â They might want to experiment with some amplification. Â Also, Mark's Solo felt recited: I think he's better when he's forced to improvise more, like when he's sitting in on a trio at The Majestic.
Sleepy bar, even on a Saturday night.  It looks like they'll have some good live music. Prices aren't too bad.  I've giving it a four on potential. The space is a nice set up. There aren't enough places where you can hang out with your friends without loud blasting music and still have a decent vibe  (that isn't romantic).
Review Source:I think this place just recently opened and I'm glad I made it in so soon! Roomy, classy, and quiet, this bar is open until 3am everyday except Monday. I like the beer tap selections, which include Boulevard's new Rye on Rye, and the prices are very reasonable. There is a piano towards the front of the bar so I imagine there will be live jazz music in the near future as well. Come check it out!
