Saw "Wee Snuff" there on a Thursday night. Besides the wonderful atmosphere and incredible music, I had just about the best Vodka-7 I've ever tasted. Actually, I had two! Great place. Highly recommended for something out of the ordinary--and brother, this world is swimming in ordinary.
Review Source:How many times has somebody told you that KC is a total jazz town? Now, how many times have you actually gone to a jazz bar? That's what I thought.
Anymore, it seems that the jazz scene in KC is not much more than a living museum. Sure the musicians are talented, but (at least in MY opinion) there's not much soul there. Much of the jazz scene in KC is akin to being inside a museum exhibit. I don't want to hear some guys version of an old Count Basie number. Safe and sterile. Snuff Jazz smashes that to pieces.
Housed in an alcove above Grunauer's Wunderbar, Snuff Jazz is an occasional event, held most (but not all, so call first!) Thursdays. For a $5 cover, you're not going to hear a single standard. Instead, you're going to hear incredibly talented musicians from both home and around the world play the hell out of some experimental jazz. Some is still quite accessible, but other night's it's going to be avant garde as fuck. How many other jazz experiences involve looping tape-recorders, miniature pianos, and un-named instruments created in some mad scientist's lab? You might love it, or hate it, but you'll have a reaction. And isn't that what art is all about?
