The burgers are definitely the way to go. Recently had steak and blue cheese salad and would not recommend at all.  Tough steak and hint of blue cheese. This was after requesting rare steak and love for blue.  The onion appetizer amazingly good  (and complemented addition to salad).  I will definitely be back (and staying away from salads).

I don't know whats with me going to places with burgers and bar food.... I must be going through a phase. But its a phase I'm enjoying :) and this place is a part of that. I had been to a hackneys out in the suburbs a few years back. When I saw this one, I had the impression from the art deco lamp shades and old city feeling that this place was the oldest, but I guess its actually a newer one. Either way, I like this one more.
The food here is good and the staff are always friendly and quick, they seem to have a lot of the columbia artsy college students working there and theres always a nice laid back vide there.
We usually just order appetizers and beers, Ive never actually had a meal here, so I can't go into great detail about the quality of a dinner, but everything Ive ever had has been great. just basic bar tasters, but I've never had any complaints with what Ive had.
Im not a big fan of the pretzel bun. Im not sure why everyone else seems to love them, but I think its optional, I don't know because, again,  I didn't actually order a burger, I've just seen them there.
Ive also heard their burger with the cheese on the inside is really good. Again, I didn't get that. But Ive heard from others its worth trying.
I would suggest sitting in the bar room as opposed to the dinning room, for the atmosphere. However I feel the serving in the dinning room is usually a little faster.
All in all great place, particularly if you''re in the mood for a few beers.

Hackney's is a really good bar to get a burger, try some different brews, and mingle with the locals. Best option in the Printer's Row area if you aren't in the mood for anything fancy.

Whatever burger you get, have it on the pretzel bun and, unless you have heart trouble, try the fried onion loaf. A half order can feed 3 people and is some serious greasy goodness.

Soups are solid and the other sandwiches and salad option are always good too. In fact, the strawberry spinach salad with a muffin on the side is spot on. Try it, especially if you have overloaded on fried onions and need to feel better about your intake.

We came here with the neighborhood coupon (buy one burger get one free) and each had the salmon burger with onion, lettuce, tomato, and advocado.  The burger was a little bit dry, and the buns weren't toasted or anything special.  The fries were AMAZING though, they had a crispy layer on the outside that melts in your mouth.  The side of fries are a MUST if you're going to go here.  The frozen house margarita was not bad as well.

Nice little joint. Great service and the food is good too. It has a great neighborhood feel. I had the vegetarian sandwich and hummus and they were great. We've also ordered burgers from here before and they are fantastic. I am a fan

Hackney's is exactly the type of place you want to live down the block from. The food here is consistently good and a cut above your average bar food. There is a tangible quality to the bread and cheese they use in their sandwiches, of which there are many varieties. I've always found the chicken in their sandwiches to be high quality as well - the New Mexico Chicken Melt is a favorite. Their fries are battered, which I am always a fan of.

There are plenty of dishes here that will wreak havoc on your figure, although there are a number of  "lighter" vegetarian options too, if you are into that sort of thing. I do love their cheddar, tomato, and avocado melt. They have a nice carousel of specials as well to keep things interesting.

I could go on about the Fried Onions, Reuben Egg Rolls, etc. but the bottom line is that I've always been happy with my food here no matter what I have ordered. It's always great to have a go-to place close by where you can just go on a whim and be confident that you will enjoy your meal, even if you do walk out feeling like there is a boulder in your stomach.

The beer list is very impressive here.  We were in for just apps and some drinks while watching the game.  The staff was way friendly and let us chill at table for hours.  The boneless wings were pretty awesome. I had a great time even tho my team lost.

I ordered the bison burger for delivery through GrubHub the other day and all I can say is, REALLY good. It's kind of pricey but it does come with some sides and I was starving. Most places don't know how to cook bison but they get an A+ for making it a nice medium. The only slight disappointment was with the mashed potatoes. They seemed kind of weird- consistency and taste-wise. But I would get that burger again in a heartbeat.

I've heard rave reviews about Hackney's, so after living in the south loop for almost a year, I decided to try it. I went with a friend for lunch. The place wasn't busy, but the waiter seemed a little aloof and the food was decent, but nothing special.

I got the blue cheese burger, which I am usually always a fan of, but I wasn't impressed. They did have a large number of craft beers and microbrews, so it would definitely be a better place for dinner than it was for lunch.

Not a fan of the atmosphere, but they make a good burger. When I lived nearby, it was a good place to grab dinner/drinks with friends. It gets busy on weekends.

    AWFUL BLACK BEAN BURGER
The "house-made" black bean burger was a bland, flavorless mass with a gummy texture and strange aftertaste.  Fries were decent, fried onions were kinda soggy and we won't be back.  Shame I couldn't send it back as we got it delivered from Grub Hub.

It's a bar in the South Loop.  There's a lot of beer on tap and a pretty large menu of regular 'ol pub food.

My experience at Hackney's definitely isn't the most memorable ever, but I know the beer was cheap and they had a really good selection of local microbrews.

There's soups, burgers, etc. etc.  The restaurant is pretty small for the crowd that shows up, so plan on waiting if you're with a group.  The bar is also small, so it's hard to just stand around and wait for your table.

Snarkiest host ... ever.  Arrived on a week night, place was obviously busy.  When we asked the host how long it might be for a table of 4 to open, he answered "depends on when the people already here leave". We get it, restaurants can't kick out their patrons.  But it seems like he could have attempted to gauge the tables and the waiting time.  Pity -- we were craving their burgers, but went to a delicious -- and gracious -- alternative down the block.  Called restaurant to complain and the woman who picked up the phone told me I sounded like her son calling to play a prank.  Strange outfit.

Always a joyful go-to! Any of their burgers are sure to please, but the infamous inside out burger will blow your mind (and your arteries, but it's totally worth every calorie). Add an order of fried onions - in glorious tower form - and you'll see why such a dish has won numerous awards. If you're still hungry after that, indulge in one of their ice cream sandwiches. Any of them, all of them, it doesn't matter. Take an order of Mac n Cheese to go - you'll thank me later.

FANTASTIC. My boyfriend and I came here on a Tuesday, no wait a few people and half off bottles of wine, FANTASTIC, but I had a pumpkin martini (don't knock it, I LOVE pumpkin) The inside out burger was great and so were the fries. My boyfriend did not like the onion rings, I like them especially with the spicy ranch sauce they give you with them. I had a side of black beans, equally great. Elise, our waitress was great and made great suggstions. She suggested I get the burger medium and the black beans, I did and they were both great. Thanks.

Their touted Hackney's Original Fried Onions ("voted one of the top 3 in the USA!") had a hair in it.

    Gross.

Their beer list wasn't as good as Kasey's Tavern a couple of doors down and my cosmopolitan was just okay. After the hair-in-the-food, though, nothing we got from that point on made us feel any better.

If you like to be publicly humiliated i would highly recommend this place.  First of all.   The food is fare at best.... to me its all about management and this where the problems lie.  They reprimand there staff to the point were they are in tears in front of customers.  So mean.  And the new manager at night.... the heavy set girl is so rude.   I think her name is julie.  My finance and i felt like we were back in high school being bullied.  Bizarre

I can't stop thinking about Hackney's. It was on my mind all night after dinner, and the first thing I thought about when I woke up this morning.

THIS PLACE WAS SO GOOD. I don't get why it only has 3.5 stars! Yelpers, please come here! The stars don't do it enough justice!

This place is a cool English pub that was poppin' even on a Wed night! There's tables near the bars as well as it's own dining room, so take your pick!

    I got their:
    1) Famous French Fried Onions: YUM. I never had onion rings so good before! It was not drenched in batter. Rather, each onion slice/ring was lightly dipped in batter/fried. What was even better was that each onion slice was SO SWEET. The sauce was nice too - some kind of chipotle aioli with CAJUN spices! Yummay. But seriously, these onion rings were bomb. You actually taste the onion and don't feel too gross from all the oil afterwards! No wonder they're the TOP 3 in the nation!

    2) Tex Mex Quesadilla - I'm from LA, so I'm so used to bomb-diggity Mexican food but Hackney's can definitely hold it's weight! Again, it was NOT oily - it had mozzarella cheese, corn, black beans, red & green peppers, tomatoes. The quesadilla tastes REALLY fresh. The tortilla wasn't too flour-y, and was crispy upon each bite. I really liked the corn because it made the quesadilla have a nice crisp crunch and tasted very summery. It even came with sour cream, guac, and mild salsa on the side in it's own cups so that it wouldn't make the quesadilla all soggy!

    3) Talapia Burger - PLEASE GET THIS IF THIS IS ALL YOU GET HERE. I've never had a Talapia Burger before, but oh my god, it was heavenly. The talapia was blackened, and had some cajun spice in it. It was so freaking good. It was very crispy on the inside, but the fish was very tender and fresh! The pretzel bun made all the difference, because the extra dough on the bread complimented the fish. The fresh onions and tomatoes also gave the burger a nice freshness. There was also a cajun sauce on the side, and you need to spread it onto the burger! It gave the burger more bite to it, but not too spicy or anything, just more flavor. The french fries were also fried perfectly, with the crispy on the outside yet still very potato-y on the inside.

The best part was this whole meal was less than $30!! What a steal!

SERVICE was amazing as well. They were very crowded, but our server came by multiple times during the meal to check up on us and make sure we were okay!

TIP: WEDNESDAYS: 1/2 pitcher of Hoff, 1 brat, 1 apple streudel for just...$10!! Because of Oktoberfest! Happy drinking y'all!

Great beer selection and good service for a bar.  Many beers priced excellently, but still some overpriced (the rarer beers seem to have an above-average markup for rare beers).  Often great beer events like "Stoutuary".  I would recommend to anyone to come in for a beer.

What's lacking is the food -- I've eaten here several times, and each time the food sounds and looks great, but the taste just isn't there.  Hummus appetizer, for example, is very bland and oily at the same time.  Burgers are overcooked every time (probably 5-6 burgers between me and my wife).

Improving the food would make this place great.

Tried this place for the first time yesterday....

    Service was good.

The Riesling was very nice. :)  I had the cobb salad and it was a good salad.  It wasn't disappointed, but I wouldn't race back to have it.  It was good.

My friend said the people love the burgers, so that may be worth trying.  He had tilapia tacos and loves them!

On my last review of Hackney's I joked and said, "It's the type of place you would take your parents." Well, I brought my mom to Hackney's and she loved it! I've taken her to probably every restaurant and bar in Chicago in the last five years, and she absolutely loves Hackney's.

First, you have your choice of patio seating, sitting in the restaurant main floor, or at the bar and each section has a different atmosphere. Hackney's is famous of it's great burgers, but please don't pass up on the Lamb and feta burger, because it is quite an experience.

Second, During soccer, basketball and football season Hackney's attracts a crowd of enthusiastic respectful sports fans that just want to enjoy the game, their food with no pressure!

Third, parking will not be an issue with Hackney's since, street parking is readily available for a reasonable fee.

Fourth, the bartenders are top notch!  The drinks are poured perfectly every single time! Although, I've given up drinking recently, I enjoyed having drinks at Hackney's with my mom and friends and it has become my favorite neighborhood bar

Hackney's has a pretty simple gastro-pub formula to follow, and it does it very well.  The beer selection always impresses me; there always seems to be something on draft that's just not available elsewhere.  Food is satisfying and is typically good to great, with a nice selection of options (but seriously, the burgers are awesome).  Don your steam-punk goggles and ride your electric carriage on over for a great time.

Hackney's was listed as a good place to take out-of-town visitors on Eater-Chicago so having recently moved to Chicago and having friends in town to visit, we decided to give Hackney's a try.  Let's just say that it's not a great place for out-of-towners or locals.

Service was decent.  All the staff was very friendly and prompt which usually goes a long way but when the food is just so boring, bland and dry, no level of staff niceness can help.  I had the chicken pesto sourdough sandwich. It was almost bordering on a being a panini.  It looked decent but there was just no taste. The chicken was flavorless and the pesto wasn't noticeable at all.  A small tomato was on each half but was only in one bite.  Fries were decent though.  Other members of our party said their sandwich buns were dry. Overall, no one liked their meals.  They weren't terrible but they were good either.  Although I didn't have them, friends did like their chicken wings.

As I said, I'm a new South Loop resident so I can't say yet if there are better choices in the area but I'm sure there are. Heck, even Bar Louis across the street would be better. Least when you go there, you know it's going to be bland and boring.

I really like this restaurant. I came here while it was very busy and so the food wasn't as great as it's been but its still stellar. Drinks are good, too. Its close to the red line and I've even walked from the orange line.  It's a great place for a good sandwich or burger and a beer.

Came here last night for dinner with some girlfriends.

I hadn't been to this location in about 7-8 years, and was reluctant to go to another Hackney's since my last experience at the location on Lake was really, really blaaaaaaaaah.

So, it seems nothing has changed in this place in all this time, with the exception of the flat screen TVs at the bar. While reviewing the menu, I was surprised to see that the selection here was different than at the other locations in the suburbs. I ordered the spinach and strawberry salad and it was pretty good, and filling enough with candied pecans and a hard boiled egg.  I like the fact that they have a (more) diverse menu (than the other locations).

Not sure how often I'd come back but if for some reason we are in the neighborhood, this would be a good stop for a casual meal.

We arrived for a late dinner on Friday night.

Our server, John, was friendly and knowledgeable. There were plenty of craft beers on tap and we tasted some. We ordered the fish tacos and a pretzel burger. The fish tacos were a pleasant surprise. There was a generous amount of delicious fish. The burger cooked medium rare was also good. However the bottom bun ended up being soggy (from the juices of the burger). The fries reminded me of burger king fries and I could pass on them.

Overall, Hackney's is a solid restaurant and bar with comfort food and great beers.

Nothing attracts me more to a restaurant than the term, "World Famous Burgers". While taking a day trip to Chicago, I had to check out Hackney's. In addition to their reputation of delectable burgers, they also hold a bragging right of saying they were featured on Diners Drive Ins and Dives. I wouldn't go as far as to say this place is a Dive but it is quite cozy. The warm atmosphere mixed with friendly staff makes this place worth visiting.

I decided to try the Regular Famous Hackney Burger on a Pretzel bun. Cooked perfectly and juicy, this burger was quite delicious.

What really is interesting about this place though, is the 29 craft beer taps they have. For such a small place, it was quite impressive. They have at least 2-3 selections based on the different type of beer (IPA's, Pale Ale, Stouts, etc). I decided to pair my burger with a nice Oatmeal Stout. If you sign up for their email list, you'll receive a coupon for $10 off a $30 purchase on your first visit. So for around $25 ( with the coupon and tax/tip) you can get two burgers and two beers. Not bad for Chicago prices.

Surrounded by cute little shops, it's a nice walk and a nice block to spend an afternoon on. The burgers are good but I honestly believe its the small eatery Chicago essence that really gives this place it's true character.

If we were able to give half stars, Hackney's would be getting 3.5/5.So if you're visiting Chicago and have already hit the top Chicago Pizza spots, try checking out Hackney's for a good burger with a side of coziness...and beer.

My family has been loyal Hackney's Printers' Row fans pretty much from the beginning. But we wouldn't keep coming back if they didn't deliver.

    1. Their food is consistently delicious, on-time and satisfying.

    2. Their menu offers a variety to please any taste.

    3. Their beer and wine selection is amazing.

    4. Their service is friendly, personal and fast.

    5. Prices are very reasonable for what you're getting.

There are so many other reasons I could list, but you should just go and find out for yourself! It's the best that Printers' Row has to offer, in my opinion, so get on over there!

Nothing stays the same ... and given that Hackney's on Harms was my favorite family restaurant when growing up in the burbs, I should have known better. The original Hackey's has a quaint charm that is lacking in all the other locations.

The food was acceptable but not remarkable - there was nothing extraordinary about the Bison burgers. But the primary complaints I have are twofold - the wait staff and the noise level.

Our waiter and nearly all the wait staff, for that matter, looked grungy and dirty - perhaps SAIC or Columbia art students. My daughter is a graduate of SAIC and told me about the hip grunge look of many of the students there. Although we had a male waiter, this ditzy waitress carried my daughter's house salad all over the restaurant looking for the table that ordered it. I tried summoning her as she walked away, but to no avail - she delivered it five minutes later after the salad had toured the place.

We had to ask for silverware and napkins. We requested doggy bags for our leftovers and made it clear that my daughter wanted her broccoli and onions. When she got home she discovered just the Bison patty in the container.

The noise level was the loudest I have ever encountered in any restaurant. There were quite a few people who were unwinding after work and I think they had imbibed a bit too much. People were laughing hysterically like hyenas - my daughter and I wondered if the room had been filled with nitrous oxide to elicit such hilarity. The only ones not laughing were the young parents with a crying newborn and the poor folks seated next to them.

I've been coming to Hackney's for many years now, and while it doesn't quite live up to the very memorable first two years, it still doesn't disappoint.  I have been to Hackney's for dinner as well as brunch, and I have never been disappointed.  It was where I was introduced to my now-favorite beer Stella Artois, and where I have always had the best grilled cheese sandwich and fries a girl can ask for.  The prices are fair and the ambiance even better.  There isn't even a slight bit of pretension here and I know from the familiar faces that Hackney's is definitely a place for regulars.

The staff has undergone some changes since I first started going there, but the level of fun hasn't changed.  It's definitely a place to go for some good conversation with your pals, and definitely a place to go if you want to start your night off right!

    Thursday night first dates.

Where to go?  I want to impress, but not come off as pretentious.

    Hackney's.  7:30pm.

I got there a little early, and put our name in.  By 7:30 a table for two was set, ready and waiting for us.

While I'd like to digress about my doe eyed adorable date, this is a review about my dinner experience.  Even though you'd all probably like to know a little more about my private life.  Ya pack of nosy jackals.

Hackney's on a Thursday night is bustling with a full range of clientele.  Old, young, pretty, NOT so pretty, families and singletons.  People eat and drink right at the old style bar, as well as tables all around the place.  Its has sort of a pub slash diner thing going on.  I really liked it.

High ceilings seem to assist in dissipating the chatter that is inevitably going on all around you.

After being seated at our wooden table, with matching wooden chairs - we reviewed the menu (in between staring at each other.  He was way cuter than his picture).  I opted for the pretzel burger, and he had a plain Hackney's burger.  Both of us were pleased with our meals.  The fries were tasty - and the on tap beer I ordered was perfect.  He opted for a neat vodka.  Hmmmm. Where WAS this date going?

I never felt rushed, and our waiter was more than friendly.  We cleared up the tip after a good hour and 15 minutes.

Thank you Hackney's for helping make this first date picture perfect.

Fries were good, but the burger was a bit dry. It could potentially have had some awesome flavor but it was really just too dry, hard to get past that. Service was great, good selection of beer, reasonable prices for the most part, but could have given more condiments to make the burger a bit juicier or something!

Recently they started sending out get 1 burger get the other free coupons, so we'll probably go try it again soon. The pretzel bread though that sandwiches the burger patty though is pretty darn good - gotta love butter.

Atmosphere though is great - if you're getting together with some friends or going on a casual date, great ambience.

I live in the neighborhood, and love cheeseburgers. The original Hackney's is amazing-- the pinnacle of old school burgerdom-- and I thought that would transfer to the Printer's Row location.

But it doesn't. The staff is nice enough; the servers are fine, but the last time we went, the buns were stale and the burgers were overcooked. The onion block is still amazing, thank god, but it was just really disappointing. It's a discredit to a great brand.

Oh, man.  The boyf and I were in town for a philosophy conference, and I could have eaten here each of the three nights we were in town.

The atmosphere is delightful: the high-ceiling dining room was beautiful and the close-packed nature of the tables made it cosy.

The food is delicious: the boyf was pleased with his plain burger and I found the inside out burger scrumptious.  Although, let's be real, there's hardly a bacon and cheddar burger I'll turn down.

The beer list is extensive, filled with lots of craft brews.  I'm a cider woman myself, and was pleased to see a Michigan pear cider that was large and inexpensive and tasty.

Hackney's has a great dessert menu, which includes the boyf's and my favorite item: plain ol' chocolate cake.  We got a huge slice for $4.95.  Word to the wise: they share desserts with Flaco's Tacos, where one can get the cake to-go for $3.95.  I devoured a slice of their red velvet all by myself another night we were out in the south loop.

The boyf wasn't as impressed with Hackney's as I was, but in my book there's no question that it merits the five stars I'm gonna give it.
