Yum. I love a good HB sandwich. My go-to order is the turkey/cheddar, but I have had others that I liked as well. I just can't say no to a sandwich on a pretzel bread. The sandwiches aren't cheap, but they are fresh and delicious. You definitely get what you pay for.
HB used to serve roasted veggies as a side, but now I think you have to pay for them separately. That's a bummer because I really enjoyed them as a side! Oh well.
This location is less crowded than the others, and there always seems to be adequate seating during the lunch hour.
The employees are extremely efficient. On a recent visit, there were five people behind the counter and another two at the registers. It's like a well-oiled machine in there!
I am a Hannah's believer, and I loooooooove this location. It's big and way less cramped than the other locations in the Loop. I have never had a sandwich I haven't liked, but the Parma is perfection! Everyone is super nice, and we make this a frequent part of our weekend routine. They even have gluten free and vegan options that actually taste great. I have picked up several loaves of their gluten free bread for my grandfather because he loves sandwiches and has the hardest time finding gluten free bread that tastes even remotely decent. Hannah's has a great recipe! And if you're looking for chocolate, they have the coolest selection of chocolate bars!
If you've never tried it, then you are definitely missing out. Do it!
P.S. I would just like to address the reviews that say the portions are too small. I am a little shocked actually. I think the portioning is perfect! Plus the ingredients are fresh and top notch. If you're looking for some XL super sized whatever, then stick to fast food. You will definitely be fine with a sandwich and chips or a half sandwich and salad or soup. I actually think their side salads are HUGE! I have a hard time finishing them.
I am completely obsessed with Hannah's Bretzel! Â I've come here twice now, once with my mom and once with my boyfriend, and both times were amazing. Â My boyfriend's reaction was "it's a lot of money for a little sandwich," and while that may be true, it's a real quality sandwich. Â
I'm gluten free, so being able to have a gluten free sandwich that actually tastes good is a really big deal for me. Â I had given up hope long ago that I would ever be able to eat a normal-tasting sandwich again, but Hannah's Bretzel changed that. Â Their gluten free bread is powdery just like real artisan bread, and they keep it individually wrapped in a separate container away from the other breads. Â The staff changed their gloves before handling my sandwich, and they all seemed really well-educated on Celiac disease. Â Both times, I had the pesto and mozzarella sandwich because all the ingredients just seemed like me, but next time, maybe I'll be brave and branch out into the more complicated options. Â They have some really fancy sandwich choices! My mom has had both of the beef options, and she loves them both. Â I swear she goes to Hannah's Bretzel at least once a week for lunch, and if I could do that too, I definitely would! Â
But the best part about this place is how you feel afterwards. Â Their sandwiches don't just sit in your stomach, making you feel obese and sluggish. Â You feel energized and healthy, and there's no need for that afternoon nap! Â I'm not normally one to go for things that are organic, but here, you can feel the difference in the quality ingredients they use. Â Yes, it's more expensive than most other sandwich shops, but Hannah's Bretzel is no ordinary sandwich shop. Â You get what you pay for, and in my opinion, it's well worth it.
Tiny sandwiches, lots of flavors, extremely filling, a little pricey, fresh always. I shall return.
This location is very spacious and clean. While you wait for the sandwich to be born, there are tons of chocolate goodies strategically located on the shelf that you will have a hard time resisting picking up.
You are warned though that it's rather difficult to eat their sandwiches in a classy and elegant way. Things just shift and explode and get to everywhere. You just have to eat this organic baby in an organic way, aka animal style.
I love the one in the loop at West Washington. Â They put a lot into the training/quality and it showed when I went there for years. Â Then, I moved offices and am by the Mart so I tried this one at 400 N. LaSalle. Â I've given it a couple of tries and will not be back. Â Once, there was a bug in my sandwich and I totally let that fly because it was in the arugula and I'd rather come across an occasional bug because it's organic than having to deal with an overabundance of pesticides. Â However, went again today and got the Vegetable Bomb. Â They drenched the sandwich in so much vinaigrette, it literally squirted all over my arm and hands from one bite. Â I had to take the entire sandwich apart and get as much of the vinaigrette off as possible before making another attempt. Â They also left off some of the ingredients. Â The chips consist of about 5 or 10 in a rather large bag. Â This has changed because they still use the same bags but when they first opened, they actually filled the bag. Â So, for this meal, you are basically paying nearly $9 for arugula, vinaigrette and bread....and a a few chips.
Review Source:My first time at this location, and it was waaaaay less crowded than the one I went to down in the Loop. Â I got the Thanksgiving sandwich which was pretty darn tasty - it comes by default on whole wheat and they had already spread cranberry chutney on it before I realized I wanted pretzel bread, damn, so I missed that delicious opportunity. Â Great flavor from the cranberry and brie combination, and lots of fresh tasting smoked turkey! Â I was bummed that the sides were only almonds, or soy nuts, or chips. Â I think the Loop location had a roasted veggie side option - maybe they've all changed now. They had roasted veggies for purchase in a larger portion that was about $3. Â I really wanted them but the sandwich itself was $8.50 and it's not that big - getting anything else besides the sandwich just makes the lunch pretty darn expensive. Â But they do have soups, salads, and a crap ton of delicious looking fancy chocolate.
Everyone's all "the sandwiches are so tiny!" and I think we're just cultured as Americans to think we should have massive portions. Â I like being able to finish my food. Â I think it's about the same size as a Subway 6 inch. Â Only, you know, higher quality and organic and fresher and actually good. Â But it's pricey, so it wouldn't be my everyday lunch spot.
In much the same fashion as the ever-unpopular Ann Sather remains on the Michelin's Bib Gourmand list, someone from Chicago Magazine must owe Hanna's Bretzel a bag of rent. Â There is nothing impressive about the #31 Serrano Ham and Manchego Cheese sandwich on their top 50 list. Â I suppose the conscious effort to state multiple times on the website that everything is organic, green, sustainable, steroid free, environmentally friendly and so forth is commendable. Â In fact, my sandwich was stated as 48% organic, leaving the other 52% as meth infused pesticides and bovine tranquilizers. There was nothing exciting about the combination of ingredients. Â Usually a rockin' sandwich is more than sum of it's parts, but this sandwich was exactly the sum of it's parts. Â
Being a typical non-German speaking American troglodyte, I figured that Ãœber meant large. Â On the website these sandwiches look like titans, reaching nearly end to end on my 22" screen. Â I thought I was going to need a wheelbarrow to roll my leftovers out the door. Â That is just not the case at all. Â The skinny 7" pretzel roll was barely enough to make a dent in my ravenous hunger. Â The assembly line preparation style is eerily similar to a Subway except every additional ingredient costs me extra freedom. Â The website does do an effective job of articulating the definition Ãœber as forward thinking and industry leading. Â Whatevs, I just wanted a sandwich with moderate to severe thyroid problem. Â
I will return and undoubtedly enjoy my next experience. Â I did appreciate the freshly cut meat and all the fresh ingredients prepared in front of me. However, just because a sandwich comes with an extra large helping of sustainability, doesn't make it a top sandwich contender.
3.5 Â
I had a free hour or so in Chicago recently and wanted to grab a slice of authentic deep dish pizza, but apparently it takes an hour just to make the pizza & they don't sell by the slice . Â So I came here instead after seeing this local chain was rated highly on Yelp. Â Their thing is "bretzel" aka pretzel bread. Â I'm not a big pretzel person so I wasn't wowed by the bread but I thought it was fine. Â The guy pointed out to me that they were still offering breakfast around 1 pm on Sunday so I decided to have an egg & cheese on the baguette shaped bread. Â They scramble the egg in front of you, which is awesome. Â So many restaurants use those microwave egg patties. Â Unfortunately, the cheese was freezing cold and didn't get properly melted so the sandwich didn't have the gooey texture it should have had. Â It was still good though, and I appreciated that they had a low sodium option for the bread. Â It seems a tad pricey (my egg & cheese was $5 and not huge) but it was fun to try and the guys working there were really nice so I'll round up to 4.
Love this place and the original at Washington & Wells. Â Only reason it's not 5 stars is that it's too expensive for a regular lunch place.
I get the Sergio's Special every time. I'm sure the other stuff is good, but this sandwich is great...madrange ham, gruyere, mango chutney, jalapeños - great combo. They also have great soups...the gazpacho and corn/quinoa are my favorites.
The LaSalle location also does a nice breakfast. Â They cook your egg sandwich to order or the pretzel bagel with cream cheese and preserves is also good.
Their sandwiches are really good, albeit pricey. Â I usually go for the Spanish Serrano Ham + Manchego Cheese. Â The reason I'm giving this location 2 stars is because I've seen flies hovering around the food. Â I've saw one land on a banana bread and it grossed me out. Â I've gone back since and they have now covered the bread with saran wrap.
Review Source:Wow... I want to try EVERY sandwich you guys make.
I popped in here for lunch one afternoon and decided on the Portabella & Goat Cheese sandwich (also including: roasted red peppers, baby arugula, rosemary-infused asparagus and white truffle oil on organic whole grain baguette). All of that is a wonderful 460 calories! To the tune of Flavor Flav: Whoaaaaaaaaaaa!
I was also lucky enough to snag a bite of a Bavari-Asian which is organic grass fed sirloin, broccoli and carrots tossed with fresh ginger and sesame oil, housemade edamame avocado spread and hint of sriracha chili sauce on organic bretzel baguette. It was delicious and all for 490 calories.
This store is clean. The employees are super friendly. Â I can't wait to come and conquer the rest of the menu...one sandwich at a time!
I'd eat here every day if it was about $2 cheaper. Â They definitely separate themselves from the rest of the sandwich market with their pretzel bread (I guess that's what a bretzel is?), and quality ingredients. Â Plus it's a much more European style sandwich than what you find at other sandwich chains. Â Different meats, cheeses, spreads etc. Â Really surprising for such a casual lunch spot in the U.S., especially considering it's a chain.
Also, the sides are small, simple and a break from what everyone else offers. Â It's great to have a couple of options like different types of nuts (I went for the almonds), when every other sandwich chain just offers the usual cookies and chips. Â I mean seriously, you're not that unique just because you're offering some hipster upstart specially baked potato chips, do something different. Â And that's what Hanna's did.
The line was much quicker than I expected, and although the sandwich looked a little undersized at first glance, it filled me up just right (and I'm no small person). Â
Only downside is I kinda wished they had fountain drinks. Â On the other hand, I'm trying not to drink pop anymore so I guess I'm a big hypocrite.
Anyways, definitely recommend it, especially so if you're looking for a change of pace. Â Also, I know most people in the city don't like walking more than a block or two for lunch, but I'd say this is worth taking a little daytime treck if you have to. Â (unfortunately that trek is through Chicago weather).
I really like Hannah's Bretzel. Their food is really good and always very fresh. The only drawback is the price. Hannah's is expensive, but I guess that should be expected when ordering organic food.
My two favorite sandwiches are:
1. The Hannah's Club
organic smoked turkey, nitrate-free bacon, Swiss Gruyère cheese, avocado, vine tomatoes, red onions and romaine hearts on organic bretzel baguette
2.Organic Grass Fed Sirloin
with Swiss Gruyère cheese, vine tomatoes, organic field greens, caramelized organic onions and horseradish aioli on organic bretzel baguette
If you want fresh great tasting food I recommend checking out Hannahs, just note that it isn't cheap.
Alright...They won Kenmore's "Best Sandwich In Chicago" contest http://www.facebook.com/… and I think I get it a little more now. Still small but their Italian Parma is delicious even though you might have to eat two of them to get full.
Review Source:I have been trying to place an order for pick-up for a client meeting I am having, and have not had a good experience. Â I understand the policy of placing an order for 5 or more items within 24 hours for catering. Â However, I needed 4 items, that I was arranging to have picked up, and they would not accommodate that. Â The location is close to businesses that have difficult schedules and they would not accommodate a simple pick-up order. Â Jimmy John's, here we come!
Review Source:A good option if you're in the Merchandise Mart/River North area and want a fancy sandwich. Â A bit pricey but a nice way to treat yo' self with healthier, organic ingredients. Â All the sandwiches are pretty good, but I have a special place in my heart for the Thanksgiving 365. (Put cranberry chutney on anything and I'm there!)
The sando portions are tiny though, so order a soup. Â The corn quinoa is damn good.
Line moves fairly quickly even during the busy lunch hour and though I usually take it to go, I've been able to find a seat if I'm dining in.
Would give a better rating if the portions were bigger.
I heart this place. Â
I don't think you can go wrong. Â This location gets a lil crazy at lunch time and finding a seat can be an issue = but I am usually getting to go.
I love the club, and I always get the roasted almonds as my side. It's more expensive then other lunch places - but I understand they use better quality food and you are getting a side. Besides, pretzel rolls are awesome.... I could eat them all day long!
Hannah's Bretzel is slowly becoming one of my usual lunch spots. My favorites are the pesto and mozzarella or the Italian Parma Ham + Goat Cheese, both of which are pretty hard to mess up, right? Sometimes the pretzel bun is okay and a bit tough, but usually I find it to be soft and oh so good that I could eat an entire loaf of it. I tend to get here post busy lunch time (i.e. 1:30-ish), so the line and wait time not that bad. Oh I applaud them for placing the chocolate bars in the center so you can view and drool while waiting in line. My favorite is the Green and Black's Organic Dark Chocolate (70%). It's quite delicious and is a great treat after my sandwich.
Review Source:Having just come back from Germany not too long ago and as a result, constantly craving bretzel, I was SO excited to see this place. Maybe my standards, then, were too high. The bretzel was expensive and dry, with not enough salt or flavor. Itty bitty packet of nutella to go along with it, which slightly improved the dryness, but not quite enough. Redemption came in the fact that they stocked lots of German chocolate, so I stocked up on the Leibniz and Ritter sport. I wish this place was better!
Review Source:Staff now works as a team. Â Willing and quick to assist.
Sandwich looks like photo.
Able to telephone for pick-up order.
Preparation is now quicker if there is no mishap.
Thank you HB for the wonderful improvements and making my life easy. Â
In addition to the Works, I am addicted to bragel with cream cheese and berries.
MMMMM!
Pretzel Buns. Gods gift to man.
I showed up at Hannah's at around 12:30 on a weekday and there was no crazy lunch line. Hooray! +1 for no waiting.
Very sterile environment inside. It's like they are preparing for sandwich surgery or something.
They make your sammich in a Chipotle-style-assembly-line fashion. I ordered the turkey cheddar, so they rapidly piled on the aioli, turkey, cheddar, greens and apple slices onto a fat, sassy pretzel roll. Fast and easy.
I got to go and ate it later today. Delicious! The sammich tasted fresh, healthy and delicious (they also display the amount of calories in each sammich, if you're into knowing what you're eating). Another good lunch option for the River North area.
The soup was seriously amazingly homemade, I even found the lucky bay leaf in my bowl! Â Not overly salty & so fresh. Â I got the combo of 1/2 sandwich & soup & the sandwich was just as great, how can you go wrong with a pretzel bun? Â I do love good bread. Â And the innards of the sandwich were so good too & so many choices to make it a healthy lunch! Â Â
It was my first time here, and sometimes when I go into a new place the staff is impatient, but they were super helpful, even gave me a taste of each of their soups so I could decide which I wanted!
YUMMMM! I was a little skeptical just because a pretzel sandwich didn't really sound like something I would love. Â I was wrong. Â The difference is that these pretzels are fresh, and the sandwich ingredient options are great. Â The staff even let me make up my own sandwich (they weren't very busy at the time - so they were very accommodating). Â I had turkey, cheddar, tomato, and avocado on a bretzel. Â The ingredients were all very fresh and I ate every bite. Â It came with a side of house made chips. Â Lunch perfection!
I also purchased 1/2 dozen bretzels to serve with fondue that evening. Â They cooked the bretzels fresh for us while we ate our sandwiches.
Wow, I definitely had quite the opposite experience from Abby Z. As a gluten free and organic chef I was thrilled when Hannah's opened up outside the loop. Since I don't work smack dab downtown I rarely had the opportunity to enjoy their food until now. Uh-oh. I'm there a lot.
Because of my profession I am pretty picky and have a difficult time finding healthy, calorie conscious and environmentally aware restaurants. But whenever I go to Hannah's I know a lot of thought has gone into the quality, nutrition content and organic accessibility of the food. To have nutritionally sound ingredients AND to be hyper aware of gluten allergies. Fantastic!
And by the way, you don't need to get a sandwich that is measured in FEET people. Wonder why Europeans aren't as obese as Americans? Portion sizes!! So those of you who are having issues with the size of the sandwich maybe just think about what a real portion size is and that good quality ingredients from sustainable sources will cost a bit more than a McDonald's burger.
And that's why I love Hannah's and why they are getting 5 stars from me! I wish more fast casual restaurants would be more like them.
This was the worst sandwich I have ever had. Period.
The texture of the bread was terrible - chewy and dense with no flavor - and the produce on the sandwich was equally flavorless and of the lowest quality. Sure, they slice the turkey breast to order but who cares if everything else on your sandwich is bad and inedible? The "Hannah's Club" for nearly $10 with tax made me wish I'd walked the extra few blocks to Grahmwich for an actual sandwich with flavor and fresh ingredients. And to the man walking around and hanging out on his computer in the chefs coat (Im assuming the "chef" of these bad sandwiches) - maybe spend a little time improving the quality of your ingredients to make people want to come spend money at your shop.
AVOID.
If you eat enough lunches in the city, sooner or later you get sick of every sandwich place. When Hannah's Bretzel opened, I wasn't very optimistic about yet another fancy sandwich place and it took a couple visits for this place to warm on me. It wasn't until I tried the Sergio's special that I realized that Hannah's is making some damn fine sandwiches. I'm not the biggest fan of the side choices, and I'm not going to pay $5 for some fancy pants chocolate bar. But I will continue to pay a staggering $9 for the Sergio's Special because, yes, it is that good.
Review Source:So I have heard many, many mixed reviews about Hannah's and finally they opened this one that is right by me.
Here is the word on the wiches at this place....
I think that honestly the veggie sandwiches are probably some of the best sandwiches I have had. Â The portabello goat cheese was phenomenal! Â Plus, the bread is great, the ingredients are fresh and different. Â I think its totally worth it. Â The other sandwiches, while good, I dont think they are fantastic. Â I also had the Hannah's Club. Â Yes, it was good, but pretty much the same as everywhere. Â The ingredients are fresher and probably healthier than other places.
The sandwiches are expensive, however, they are somewhat organic (they even tell you the percentage) and they give you the nutritional info....so I guess you get what you pay for. Â
If your looking for a cheap sandwich, you should probably stick to the $5 footlong from subway which is probably not as fresh, definitely not organic and the bread isnt as good. Â Ill be back, but I think I'll stick to the veggie sandwiches because I think they are worth it.
I love the fresh ingredients. I love the assembly line. I love how clean it is. I love feeling European posh one block from the Brown Line. I love being surrounded by expensive imported chocolate that I won't buy while I'm waiting to order my lunch.
I do not love that skinny sandwiches are $10. I do not love that the "side of roasted veggies" is like...the 2 carrots that were swept off the floor and put into a small container. I do not love that the side of chips contains approximately 7 crisps. I do not like that the bread dominates the other components of the sandwich. I do not like that you are scoffed at for substitutions.
Not sure what the BFD is about this place. Is pretzel bread really that mind-blowing?
I live in the building above Hannah's Bretzel, so I was excited when it finally opened. I'm big into organic food and sustainability, so I thought it would be right up my alley.
My friend and I ordered their lunch combos with a half sandwich and soup. The sandwiches tasted decent at best, but what really bothered me is the fact that they were TINY.
We both ordered the vegetable barley soup, which was bland. $10 later, I'm still hungry and unsatisfied.
I know that the sandwiches all are low-calorie, but I didn't realize that its just because of how small they are. Also, I have made 300 calorie wraps that taste much heartier and delicious than their sandwiches do.
I had heard about Hannah's Bretzel in the Loop location, but couldn't bring myself to walk down there after class. Â This location opened up a hop, skip, and jump (literally) from my Master's program classes! Â I couldn't be more thrilled. Â My first 2 (yes, I went twice in one week) definitely did not disappoint.
The first time I had the Apple, Thyme and Brie sandwich on bretzel bread and it was wonderful! Â It was light, but definitely filling and I loved the little bag of chips that came along with it! Â Just enough. Â The second time I had the Italian Parma. Â I'm a sucker for anything with goat cheese on it! Â It was on the salty side, but that's the meat that you get, and since I'm a salt fiend, I loved it!
I went both times at 11:30, and didn't need to wait in line. Â However, as I was leaving around 12:30, there was a monstrous line, though it appeared to be moving quickly. Â Either way, I would have waited in it! Â It's such a nice alternative to the multiple quick mediocre sub places in the area!
I was a Hannah's fan before this location opened...I would walk 10 minutes to the one on Washington because I loved their salads, soups and spectacular sandwiches so much. Â So when this location opened right next to my office I thought "Ohh great...now I'll be spending $100/week on sandwiches" Â Â One question though...any customer would FLIP if they received a sandwich that had mold on the bread. Â Why is it ok to have black rotten lettuce in your salads? Â The location on Washington had this same problem along with browning broccoli. Â I guess this means to just stick to what they're awesome at...sandwiches. Â
Their soups are great too.
This place is new and all about keeping it healthy and environmental friendly. Seems like a lot of places like that Protein Bar, not to far from this place, works on the same theme.
Sandwiches are moderately priced. I split a sirloin sandwich and we got broken chips (also can get a side of nuts instead) but i like chips more) for 8 something dollars. You can get water in a real glass too! Never have had a self serving water like that before, cool first time experience.
As your checking out, you will chocolate bars from all over the world and expensively priced. I would get it for my parents as a gift sometime. I thought that was pretty neat. Nice environment with large windows everywhere. I would come here again, it's better than Subway. Hopefully patio dining will be open in the summer.
The first step is admitting you have a problem. Â
I love Hannah's. Â Until recently, the closest location was juuuuust far enough away to keep me from blowing my cash (and my diet) on a daily basis. Â When 400 N. La Salle opened up earlier this week, they did a free lunch for 200 people, which I gladly stood in line for. Â
The line was loooong, but moved (I thought) surprisingly fast. Â Once inside, it was clear to me they'd worked out any assembly line kinks prior to opening. Â These people were spot on. Â Fast, friendly, and no mistakes that I could see. Â And it was loud and busy in thereMakes you wonder how you can walk into other places (I won't name names), be the only person in line, and still get the wrong ingredients on your grudgingly made sandwich. Â Kudos to Hannah's for training their sandwich makers to take pride in their work and smile at their customers. Â It makes the (already delicious) food taste better.
I've been there four times this week (I told you. Â Problem.) and each time I've walked out with a smile on my face. Â I'm a sucker for their Turkey Farmhouse Cheddar, but the Sergio's Special I'm ramming down my gullet right now is pretty darn spectacular, too. Â
Also, mini Vosges bars. Â CANNOT complain about that.
