O.K. So Ive always wanted to try the famous "HAROLDS CHICKEN"...Iv never lived in a neighborhood that had one till I moved here in Uptown. So I spotted this place while driving home...and I was like "IVE GOT TO TRY HTIS PLACE" I went in a couple days ago on a dreary rainy spring day, was just expecting to have some "ok" chicken. I first noticed they got all kinds of good looking foods NOT JUST CHICKEN. I also seen they had CHCKEN LIVERS which I absolutely LOVE! I placed an order over the phone to "PICK UP" the girl said in 20mins my food would be ready...I gave them Half an hour (30 mins.) When I got there it wasnt even started it took another 20 mins just to cook my food, which means it took approx. an hour to complete my order. YES I was getiing pissed!!! And i was a first time customer! I thought this better be some darn good food for all this time Im waiting. Lo and Behold It was PURE AWESOMNESS I ordered the Chicken Livers and Wings Combo. Drenched in xtra hot sauce, of course it came with fries, cole slaw and two slices of bread wich nicely sopped up all that savory spicy goodness. The batter they cooked in, is seasoned to PERFECTION! I was like "HOT DAMN THIS IS GOOD"...The chicken wings are very juicy as opposed to being greazy (there is a big difference) If you dont like spicy hot sauce they also have Mild Hot Sauce. The food was SOOO delicious I forgot about the slow service. But still - they need to work on that! More than likely I will recomend and be a reuglar customer.
All in all...Serive needs some work, but the food, Is High Quality Tasty Awsomeness!
Oh yea an added plus is they are very very clean there. Not at all dirty or filthy like other chicken joints in the area. (No Names)
WAIT!!! One more thing! MUST TRY THEIR DESSRTS! Simply Wonderful and Fresh! I had a Strawberry Parfait...YUMZ!

You really cannot go wrong with Harold's. In fact, if you are craving fried chicken, you only have two options in my eyes. Harold's and Popeye's. Choosing between the two is really a matter of how much you're willing to spend and convenience of location. If you choose Harold's, call ahead.
Review Source:I mean, it's a chicken shack so your expectations can't be TOO high. The chicken is good. I've never had any problems with the service here. It's a newer Harold's so it's clean. The wait is about average for any other Harold's I've been too. I like it and I never have any issues. The people are nice and I always get what I order.
Yum.
I visited Harold's Chicken on 12/08/12. I ordered five wings with fries and a double chocolate cake. The total was $11.44. The cake was from Caramela's Bakery (never visited) and it was okay. I enjoyed that it wasn't too sweet. Of course, the chicken is the main attraction. I ordered my sauce on the side because a fellow Chicagoan suggested it. Without the sauce you can really taste the seasoning on the chicken. I prefer the mild sauce because it has a sweet taste to it. I have noticed that Harold's has changed their fries at least once. Maybe they are trying to adapt to their customer base. Fries are fries to me and it's very difficult to mess them up. Hahaha. They started including a small coleslaw but it is only two bites at most.
And it does take 20 minutes or more for your order because they are cooking the wings fresh.
Harold's + GrubHub delivery= danger for my waistline!!! Â Delicious chicken, sauces & all sorts of fried sides. Â Love the lightly toasted white bread that soaks up the drippings at the bottom of the container. Â Very nice lady called me to ask if I really wanted all of the sauces I ordered, and if so, should they be placed "on" or "on the side". Â Thanks for satisfying my craving tonight, Harold's!
Review Source:While the chicken is alright (it's not hard to make fried chicken taste good) the service is awful. And thanks to their layout you can see just how slow and incompetent these employees are. There is absolutely no sense of urgency even when there are six people waiting in the standing area for their food. Â I ordered via Grubhub and it took them approximately 45 minutes to make my food when I was promised 25. Not even a "sorry for the wait." or anything to let me know they tried. Â And this wasn't during a dinner rush, it was at 1:40 on a Sunday afternoon. And why promise coleslaw when they never put it in with the meal. Oh yeah, last week they ran out of white meat. Inexcusable, lazy, why anyone should continue to go is beyond me.
Review Source:Maybe I just got a bum meal... Otherwise I can't understand how everyone else's reviews are so glowing and my chicken was so terrible... The opposite of crispy, super dry, and absolutely no flavor (other than the oil). The fires, as others have commented are also terrible. Super bummed since I was excited at the prospect of how fat I would get with a good chicken place so close to my house :(
Review Source:Harold's Chicken on Wilson is my Chicken Heaven!

Tried this location one time. Â So looking forward to having a Harold's on the north side. Â So, so disappointed. Â The chicken was not well done. Â I don't have to have dried out, well done chicken. Â But this was so bad, by the time I picked over it, it wasn't worth being bothered with. Â Not for time or and definitely not for the money. Â Disappointed.
Review Source:It's a no brainer that Harold's is the best place for fried chicken. I live down the street and have been in a couple of times. I always get the special as it is the best deal.
THE FRIED CHICKEN IS GREAT! However, I wish the fries were better (way too thick and not crispy at all), and I could probably do without the wonder bread ;-).
I've been to a few Harold's around the city. Â Most are consistent (meaning depending on the cook, the food comes out the same).. Â There are some cooks were the food comes out great (crispy, flavorful, and timely). Â There are some cooks where the chicken is overcooked, always waiting longer than normal, not that flavorful, etc. Â So, if you find one that you like, and the food is delicious, find out the schedule of that cook. Â In doing so, you can guarantee that your food will come out as expected.
I like my chicken crispy, my fries crispy, and chicken perfectly fried. Â The guy who worked this past Friday made it exactly the way I like it. So, I will only go on days when he is working. Â This will ensure no disappointments in the future.
Back in the day, I would order Harold's with ketchup, mild sauce and hot sauce. Â Everything in the box container was soaked in sauces. Â Amazing. Â Now, I only get salt and pepper on my chicken. Â Brings out a lot of flavor.
I try not to eat a lot of fried foods. Â So, I will only allow myself Harold's may once a month. Â My treat...
Oh, the cakes are good too. Â Very large portions.
I stopped in this afternoon after I tried calling in an order several times. For whatever reason no one answered the phone when I tried calling and the line would disconnect after about a minute and a half. Nevertheless, I was craving some fried chicken so I just decided to walk on by the restaurant. I got there around 215pm and the Bulls game was starting at 230pm so I was hoping to place my order and get my food relatively quickly. Luckily I got to place my order right away but I noticed there were a handful of people waiting for their food ahead of me.
I wanted to order the 8 piece mix bucket of chicken (i was ordering for 2 people, im not a glutton) but the lovely woman at the counter informed me that they were temporarily out of dark meat. Not a problem really. I like dark meat, but I prefer white meat anyway, so I just ordered a pair of the 1/2 white meat meals which comes with fries, coleslaw, and sauce (gotta go with mild sauce). I also wanted to try out the mac and cheese bites so I ordered those as well. The lovely woman at the counter then told me that it would be a 15 to 20 minute wait. It was understandable considering there were only 2 people working - the woman at the counter and one other man who seemed to be doing all of the cooking.
After about a 20 minute wait I got my chicken and hurried back to my apartment to catch the end of the first quarter of the Bulls game. I thought the chicken itself was moist, well seasoned, and had wonderfully crispy skin. The 1/2 white chicken meal was comprised of 2 wings and 2 breasts. I only ate about half of it, it was a huge portion for an incredibly reasonable price. The fries and coleslaw were sub par but I was really only concerned with how the chicken tasted, and the chicken was quite good but not mind blowing. As for the mac and cheese bites, my brother and I felt that was the best part of the meal. Just deep fried triangles of mac n cheese goodness that were warm, flavorful, and completely addictive. Because I live so close, because of the price, and because of the quality of the chicken/mac bites, I will certainly go back for another visit as soon as I can digest this past one.
The best fried Chicken in North Chicago. Â The quality of the chicken is amazing, it's crispy and the meat is tender, what more do you want! Â The couple of things I think they can improve on is (a) variations in seasoning - they only have one rub, which is standard mild.. some spicy rubs would take this place to new level, and (b) the is a little greasy and salty.. lower the salt/sodium and you are in for a treat!
Review Source:First of all, I had no idea Harold's was on Wilson. Â I have been driving past this place on and off for over a year and it took my little girl to spot it. Â With that being said, once I knew it was there, I immediately walked up there to get something to eat.
I got the 1/2 Dark dinner with mild sauce & lemon pepper, small catfish dinner with lemon pepper, cole slaw, okra & fried corn, and the chocolate cake for dessert. Â The chicken was moist, crispy and out of this world. Â Fish was tasty also but gotta say I was so taken by the chicken that I didn't give the fish a fair shake. Â Okra was good...not sure if was fresh or not, but man it was good. Â Cake was most likely store bought but it was light and moist and hit the spot.
Even though I walked home with my order, it was still hot when I got home, so I can only imagine how hot it was when they packed it. Â With all of that being said, this is not a place to go to if you want something in 5 minutes or less. Â When I walked in and placed my order, the cook didn't start cooking my food until the order taker had given him the ticket. Â So either phone ahead or be prepared to sit a little bit and wait on a hot and delicious meal.
This is a newer Harold's location, and I'm pleased to see them back in Uptown. Â Â
In many respects, the Wilson location resembles other Harold's: Â good chicken, very very slow counter service. Â Â Unfortunately, this location has no tables. Â If you want to dine in, you have to sit on benches by the front window. Â
Otherwise, the chicken is of good quality -- probably above average compared to most other Harold's. Â Â I would recommend this place over other chicken options in the area. Â There is no other fried chicken like Harold's. Â But that alone doesn't warrant more than a three star review.
After reading Tucker Max's book "Assholes Finish First," Â he mentions Harold's Chicken Shack numerous times and highly praises this shack. So, since I am a fan of his, I had to check out why he would come here so often. I suspect that his heavy drinking and greasy foods go hand in hand, right?
Anyhow, this shack is located near the Wilson Red Line. I'd say be careful walking to this place because it is not in a very safe area of town. This place is only takeout so don't expect to find tables in here.
The worker in the store was so friendly, she even recommended a special to me. I ordered the 1/2 chicken with dark meal special for $3.99. It is such a bargain. It came with fries and a little bit of cole slaw and some bread. I love the fact that they cook everything as ordered. All the other fried chicken places premake their chicken so it is never fresh. Harold's was the opposite. It was so delicious. I am now eager to try their other dishes on their menu on my next rendevous.
One good tip, order over the phone first. Then, walk over there. It takes about 15 minutes for them to make the food. I saw that they also deliver too but if you live close enough, you can jaunt over there easily.
Ordered our food at 2:15 on http://Grubhub.com. Â They said it would be delivered at 3:04. Â Received a call from them at 2:45, saying they were out of several of our items. Â 3:10 rolled around, still no food. Almost two hours after we ordered, we called to say our food had still not arrived. Â They just said that they had too many deliveries and that the order was on its way, without even asking us what order we were or what our address or name was. Â Received most of the food, but received Coke instead of the Sprite we ordered, and didnt get any of our coleslaw. Â At that point, it wasn't even worth complaining again, because they certainly did not have any consideration the first time. We were just happy to have some of the food. Â The mac and cheese bites were the best thing we had, the chicken was dry and stringy. Â Fries were bland. Â Accompanied by two pieces of wheat bread that were as hard as cardboard. Â Real disappointment.
Review Source:First things first, we had zero problems with our service. We ordered online for pickup and when we arrived our food was nearly ready (we waited about a minute) and everyone was very pleasant.
Now for the food. In a word, incredible. My wife ordered the 1/2 mixed chicken dinner, I got the six wing dinner and we added the two wing sampler (we were hungry, apparently). Everything was cooked to perfection...tender and delicious. Each meal came with tons of fries and slaw. The kicker? The whole thing cost a total of 16 bucks!
Easily the best chicken we've had in the city. Throw in the low price and Harold's becomes a place we will frequent much to the detriment of our cholesterol levels.
Run, don't walk to this place for your next fried chicken fix.
Chicken was awesome, as I had heard. Although the wait was long, about 20 minutes. Only gets four stars because the fries are different and notably worse than other locations and because I tried to phone in my order early but never received an answer. On another day I ordered through Grubhub who also was not able to reach them to confirm my order. Both times I went in the place was not very busy, it seems they need another staff person to run the place efficiently. Chicken is still worth the wait.
Review Source:This spot is by no means comparable to the Harolds on 87th or the one that used to be on Sheridan and Leland. Nevertheless, when I have a 6 wing craving (fried hard w mild sauce on the side) like I do now, I make it here. Solid chicken wings, albeit a little slow. By the way, why the hell did they give me a slice of wheat bread one time?!?
Review Source:Okay, so I was pretty against going to Harold's when they first opened a shack in Uptown. Â Several friends recommended it, so a couple days ago, my husband and I gave in and entered.
After debate about how much food we would need, we ordered a 16 piece bucket, okra, and large fries. Â We were told it'd be 30 minutes, so we went to Target to get some drinks. Â We returned and the guy let us know the delivery had just arrived and he had to cut the chicken.
WHAT!? They actually break down the chickens? Â After being taught to do so by my chef husband, I have respect for anyone willing to do that. Â We had to wait about an hour total, but I'd rather wait longer and know the stuff is super fresh. Â It was and it was certainly worth that wait.
The chicken was crispy and juicy. Â It was some of the best I've ever had.. and my standards for fried chicken are high. Â I'm a southern girl. Â The okra, while I'm almost certain arrives frozen, was pretty freakin' tasty. Â The fries kind of sucked, though. Â
The food was so good, we devoured all of the fries and okra and only had 7 pieces left of chicken after about twenty minutes. Â We ate all but one piece the following day.
And all of it was only $25.
First of all I would like to say, before today I had admired Harold's. I have never had an issue with them. Maybe they do take a bit while on the service, but the food was great. Now what happened today was unexpected and I was totally disturbed. I was on my way from work which was only 15 mins away. I called and the woman told me to hold on. So in my mind I had a feeling they were busy so I could understand, but as I was waiting after listening to her take orders, than after that she just talked in the background to other people got me a bit upset. Honestly I should have hung up since I was on my way there, but I just wanted to see how long it would take. So I waited 11 mins on hold to come into the place to only see 3 people. Is that really busy?? So I go up to the counter relaxed and I said wow you guys must be busy I showed her my phone and it said 12 mins. She gives me this disgusted look on her face saying ( Well' let me take your order) I told her it would have been the courtesy thing just to tell me you were busy and just call back. I would have totally understood. She said well what would you like to order. At that moment right there just made me say never mind have a nice day.
That was totally unprofessional and If I had a business I would not have that type of service in my establishment. I don't know if its because there name is going to get them business, but honestly in this day in age you can lose your business because of customer service. I come from a strong field of customer service and I'm in management. One thing that I emphasis on the most is customer service, because I look at it that any business should be grateful that a person is stepping foot in there store. You can get food anywhere and chicken to be the least is anywhere in Chicago. I hardly write reviews, and when I do is to compliment, but today I felt that some people should know.
The food is good but its not good enough to get bad customer service. Harold's you lost a great customer and at this rate you might continue to lose more if the customer service continues like that. I know its plenty of people out there that share my same philosophy.
The only reason that you got one star is because the floor was at least clean...
Harold's + Grubhub = chickeny goodness
I have to admit, I have never set foot in this Harold's. And outside of the one time they called me to let me know they were out of catfish (horrors, but the perch was just fine), I have never dealt with one of their employees. So that skews my experience somewhat.
Is this chicken nirvana? Not really. Is it the best fried chicken I can get delivered to my little home in the demilitarized zone between Uptown and Andersonville? Absolutely.
I hesitated before giving Harold's the fourth star, but the constant presence of Harold's bags in my trash convinced me to up the rating.
I was looking forward to Harolds Chicken opening. It took them much longer then advertised to do so but the waiting continues when you make your order,
38 minutes!!!!!!!
That is how long I waited for my lousy chicken, a thoroughly incompetent and disinterested staff made sure.
Just the honestly worst fast food experience, the chicken was greasy, not crispy....(turn up heat on oil), same for the fries....and the napkins for that matter.
Bad Bad Bad!!!
This location is ideal, like something out of Harlem's black community. Scenes of the city here are classic. Nestled underneath the el tracks, tucked amidst urban clothing stores (filled with Scarface T shirts!!) lies this staple of Chicago's soul food/ ghetto food kitchen in the heart of Uptown...UPTOWN BABE'. At Harold's we went extra durty, by getting the combo of fried Chicken Gizzards, Hearts, and Livers smothered in hot sauce along with fried okra, and yes, more hot sauce....GIVE ME DAT HOT SAUCE!!! The meal was ideal! a generous portion, and it was damn good, even though some might be turn off by this choice in food, don't be discouraged. they got wings and other normal foods too. Harold's is a must for cuisine from Chicago's black community. Eat Durty!
Review Source:Yes! Â A Harold's in Uptown! Â Same great chicken but closer to home, right?
Well, yeah, except...no fried chicken is worth a 28-minute wait. Â NONE.
They need either a third employee on a shift, or two employees who aren't lazy and have at least an iota of sense.
The place looks great and they cook a mean bird, but what I saw last night from a customer service and operational standpoint is absolutely unacceptable.
Gotta get the wing dinners with mild sauce! Xtra mild sauce! Fries are good and this Harolds is def legit for a north side location. Â I live nearby so I go like twice a week. $6.99 for 7 wings with fries and bread! Can't beat that! Â PS the pizza puff is pretty fire and it comes with fries too!
Review Source:They were out of menu's, forgot to cook my food (so it took 20 minutes), gave me the wrong food, my chicken still had feathers (3 pics uploaded of 3 different pieces), manager wasn't there when I called, it's been a day and a half and they still haven't returned my call.
Hopefully the city makes them change before they make anyone sick.
So glad that Harold's has come to Uptown! Â I've been once so far and been very happy with what I've had. Â Say what you will, but deep-fried chicken giblets (livers and gizzards, mmmm gizzards!) are AWESOME and no one will ever convince me otherwise.
Cooked perfectly, tasty sauce, lots of food for the price. Â The fries were rather soggy, but I also had about a 15 minute walk home with them in a bag, so maybe they would have been tasty fresh. Â I'll go back and shove a handful of fresh fries in my face right away to test this out.
Yes, Yelp - this I will do for you.
