This place is my 'Cheers!' Â Warm welcome every time, chat and banter from all the friendly staff. Food is standard pub fare, beer selection average, oh but the fun, awesome. On a side note, Eddie is the music master, bow down to his genius at reading a crowd and playing exactly what's required!
Review Source:Finding a good, low key pub with a neighborhood type vibe and above average bar food is hard in the Hells Kitchen. You're right next to Time Square which means chain restaurants and bars at every corner. But after a friend bringing me once, I finally found my ideal watering hole for these parts.
Enter Hibernia.
Awesome bartenders all with a heavy pour hand? Check.
Great bar grub? Check.
A laid back, fun atmosphere, no matter if it's a quiet Monday night or a busy Friday night? Check.
Hibernia isn't gonna blow your socks off in terms of beer selection, ambiance, bar fare, etc. but everything they have going on is above average (especially that Rasher sandwich. Two words: bacon heaven) and it's overall just a great spot to come with some co-workers, buds, etc. and just kick it and have a good time.
Plus - what says "happy birthday" like taking a shot of Jameson out of a studded leather heel (reference my pic).
My main issue is that this place is relatively small and can't adequately contain the number of Steeler fans that flock here for game days. That being said, this is the only Steelers bar in the city that's worth the commute and early, early arrival for a seat. Big TVs, good bar food, tons of energy and an abundance of rowdy, jersey-clad hometown neighbors.
Review Source:Visited here last night with a few friends. Really cool local hangout and apparently a very intense Pittsburgh Steelers bar when it's not just an ordinary sports bar. Lots of seating at the bar is supplemented by three large tables that can seat 6-8 each and then there's some Starbucks-style window seating at the very front. Great service and funny bartenders, but the hot chicken wings really weren't very spicy.
Review Source:Great Steeler Bar. Â My wife and I saw the Steelers beat the Eagles and had a side show of music, dancing and confetti. Â We met one of the bar flies, Brian. Â He was the resident tail twister that was the only patron rooting against the Steelers. Â The food was very good & service outstanding.
This was our first time here & we will definitely return on our next trip to NYC.
WARNING: Â Elbow to Elbow at game time(part of the show).
This review is based on an experience we had a couple weeks back. Thrillist had announced a Mojito Madness event at several bars in the city - one of which was Hibernia. Having read other reviews about how this was an excellent place for happy hour and great ambiance, we decided to try it out.
Upon asking the bartender about the mojito specials, they looked at us like if we were speaking in tongues and had asked for some obscene request. They asked if we wanted a long island iced tea (no idea why) Â then sort of snickered. We ordered a round of beers so it wouldn't be a complete waste of time, but felt them and the other patrons stare daggers at us as if we absolutely didn't belong there.
I can understand that there may have been a mistake in the publication advertising that they were a part of the event (with the location address and pictures of the business), but there was no need for them to be unwelcoming and downright rude.
I really wanted to like this place, but after that there's just no way we'll go back.
Great bar which opened up after the demise of Scruffy Duffy's from 8th Avenue, and one of the main guys from there came to found Hibernia. Â
During football season, this is a Steeler bar, so consider this your one and only warning. Â At any other time, you can request and usually get any other sport on the telly, from Rugby to F1 to whatever else the bar can get on their network. Â
Food is good, and groups are always welcome, with rarely ever a wait for a drink. Â The location is good for a neighbourhood bar, but being just a BIT off 9th means you won't just see it by accident and walk in. Â It will be worth your while to look for it, though!
Went in here for lunch last week and their was a baby in bar the wouldn't stop crying for at least 45 minutes. Â If it hadn't already ordered my meal (which was sub-par) I would have left. Â It really ruined my experience here.
On to the meal . . .
I ordered "The Balboa" which is basically a Rib-Eye sandwich. Â Now I know this is a bar so I wasn't expecting the best Rib-Eye in the world but the sandwich was very fatty. Â This did not make for a pleasing meal.
With that said however Hibernia is still one of the only places in the Theater District/Hell's Kitchen area that I've been to that gives you a free drink/% off your tab if you order a few drinks. Â The Philly Cheese Steak is pretty good too.
I'd say this place is a sold three star joint.
Have you BEEN to their bathroom? Â Yes, I did just add a star solely for the bathroom. Â It is unisex, and it is single, but by golly, it is beautiful. Â The door leading up to it is painted Christmas red, comes with its own street number, and makes you think you're going somewhere in life as you head toward it, somewhere important. Â When you open the door, you'll be surprised at what you'll see. Â Imagine one of those scenes from Sesame Street when they're opening doors that lead to different places, and light shines out to welcome them. Â That's how I felt. Â This bathroom was C-L-E-A-N. Â I was so happy to use it! Â Well done, guys, well done!
Anyhoo, they open up all of the windows when it's nice outside, which is practically the entire side of the bar that faces the street.  It gives a nice open feel to the place unlike the normal closed in feel of a bar.  You get some nice people/dog walking here, but beware of secondhand smoke.  I personally was having a stressful day so I welcomed it  =P
Food is decent. Â There are like seven freakin TV's and a projector, a bit much for a place that's not that big, but I guess the guys dig it. Â Waiters are super attentive.
I freaking hate this place. This establishment tolerates smokers in the outside dining/drinking area... technically, if seats tables and food/drink are being served, thats still considered 'inside' the restaurant, even if technically you're 'outdoors'.
people just brazenly smoke there, and im sitting next to them, coughing up a storm because their cigar/cigarette smoke is choking me!!
i asked the waitress to tell them to smoke away, she told them accordingly, she walked away and they lit up again, and just stood sort of away, time elapses, and they sit back down to smoke in the outdoor dining area.
waitress comes back to give them drinks, sees theyre smoking, does nothing.
in my book, they're condoning it.
not cool guys.... not cool.
I had been walking around Hell's Kitchen for about 30 minutes trying to find a place that seemed like a good neighborhood bar. I spotted Hibernia from across the street and it seemed like it may be what I was aimlessly searching for ... and it did in spades!
I walked in and looked for a place to sit at the bar. Turns out I was sitting by the dart board. Two fellows intending to play informed me and found me another seat. Another one of their friends chatted with me while he was paying his tab. He ended up introducing me to the dart players and the bartender. The folks at this bar couldn't have been nicer!
There have some nice beers on tap at a decent price. I also got an order of fish & chips that was pretty solid! I plan to drop in on this bar whenever I am in the city.
I come to NYC about 3 times a year and have tried a lot of little hole in the wall places, yet finding one that truly makes me feel like I'm at home (CLE, OH). Enter Hibernia. The bartenders and staff are friendly and talkative and pour a mean shot. If you are a first timer or celebrating a birthday, make sure you take your 1st shot out of the women's heels that are there... and have your cameras ready! Thru all of this, the food is above average for bar food and they have a great selection of beers on tap. This is the Steelers backers bar as well for all you black and gold fans.
This place is like Cheers... I came on a Sunday for the first time and by the end of the night knew 1/2 the bar by first name. When I came back on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights (we did other stuff, but eventually ended up @ Hibernia) the bartenders shouted out my name, had a handshake for me and an ice cold Yuengling waiting for me. Thanks HBHK (Hibernia Hell's Kitchen) for making my 6 days in the big apple fly by and remind me why I find this city so intriguing. Keep up the good work!
HIbernia is great bar...steelers bar, but they do have varied loyalities (Cubs, NY rangers) good atmosphere, though it felt like the space was cramped. Yesterday with rain, wasnt expecting many ppl to show up. but the time it was about 8pm, the entire bar was humming. Drinks are decent priced. Bartendar prefers to call you by your first name, which I thought was amazing.
all in all, great place for after work drinks.
A solid standby for a night of drinks in midtown. I was just here last night to watch the Giants game (though this is first and foremost a HUGE Steeler's bar), and a friend who I was with said it best, "This bar is always full." It's true. It's never crowded. Never uncomfortable. But on any night, no matter what day or time, you will always find a decent number of people knocking back pints of Guinness and exceptionally generous shots of Jameson.
The crowd is friendly, the bartenders know you by name, the food is perfect when you're craving bar food (and I think the chicken wings are flavored with Old Bay...anyone? anyone?) Overall, it's just a solid bar. Definitely recommend.
A pretty cool spot.
I walked by this place a week or two back and thought it looked interesting with its railing along open windows and outdoor seating area, so I decided to Google it. Â After coming across their facebook page, it was clear that this was a Steelers bar, and that these fans probably get pretty rowdy. Â So, I rounded up some troops and we got a few pre-game drinks there on a Friday night.
Not the most crowded place I've ever seen, but the waitress was super attentive and consistently came outside to check up on us. Â They have $3.50 PBR tall-boys on the daily, so you always have that to fall back on, but they also have Kilkenny Cream Ale, which is a delicious nitro-tapped brew that I've never seen elsewhere.
I'm definitely looking to check this place out again, maybe even on a Sunday to see how crazy these Steelers fans can be. Â
Totally worth a look. Â Check it out yourself.
Briefly: I call Hibernia The Happiest Place on Earth because it is my favorite bar and possibly my favorite place that isn't my house. I love it there and I think you will too.
Now I'll be much less brief.
Atmosphere: Hibernia feels like less of a bar and more like a clubhouse. You're only ever as alone as you want to be. if you walk in alone and want to talk you'll almost always find someone willing to chat you up, be it a fellow patron or the awesome bar staff. if you want to be the brooding guy in the corner, you can do that too, as long as you don't ruin the fun for everyone else. Being a dick is generally discouraged.
The noise level is difficult to describe. It's very organic. A lot of nights the jukebox is off and the bartenders run the show off their Macbook. they'll take a request with a smile and may even play it when the time is right, but my advice is to trust them. Especially Eddie. That man has a magical ear for music. That all said, if the crowd is quiet, the night will be quiet. If there's energy in the room, it's incredibly possible a full out dance on bar the bar sing along could break out.
There are 5 TVs and giant screen. Any game you could possibly want to watch can be on a screen minutes after a polite request. Â
Drink: Fully stocked bar (of course), a good beer selection (both draft and bottle) especially for such a small space, and they have Original Sin Cider. It's not as rare as it used to be, but it's not as common as it should be. It's my favorite cider and I'm damn happy it's at my favorite bar.
The boys know how to mix a delicious drink and if you're looking for a Guinness you'll find a great pint at the Hib.
Food: The menu (What I remember of it because I haven't looked in ages) has your standard variations on things you'd expect to find at a bar. I can say I've enjoyed any food I've been served (or stolen from a  friend's plate ) here.
They've got wings. Really good wings that I like a lot. I'm not going to over hype them because everyone has their favorite wing and thinks every other wing is bad, but you'll enjoy the wings.
And the nacho fries. You should get those too.
If you see Aidan, tell him you want the Twisted Cow on the menu.
Looking through for typos and what not, I've noticed this review is almost sickeningly positive. I'm really not the type of person that would write something so glowing unless it was deserved. I promise.
Go to Hibernia. You'll eat, drink, be merry, and drink some more. A lot more.
Watch for the drunk bald guy that walks around propositioning men and women.
Had many pints of Harp there, and its a real Irish bar, many patrons are from the "old sod". Soccer was playing on the big screen, and some ppl broke into a song and a jig. Not bad.
Place is a wee bit small, but it sure was fun.
Hibernia is a fairly typical Irish bar. Sorta divey but clean and decent drinks at typical prices. There's a couple things that stand out a little about this place is that their bar food is better than average and they have a decent dart board set off to the side of the bar. And for those interested, this is a big time Steelers bar.
Fun Facts: Hibernia was the original name for Ireland. Explorers from the Roman Empire came up with the name in the first century. The name was actually used until the 1700s. Ireland is actually the English translation for the country's official name, Eire (derived from Eriu, a Gaelic Goddess)
To me, this bar represents the real New York City. There's no bullshit here. Everyone has a good time, and everyone is welcome.
I bring my entire family here. I bring my girlfriend here. I bring my friends here. I go here all by myself. You can have as much, or as little, privacy as you want. When friends come in from out of town, this is where I bring them to show them the best of what the city really has to offer.
The generous pours aren't overpriced. The pub food doesn't need to put on airs to be satisfying. The staff is friendly, and more impressively, it's genuine; between them and the regular crowd, if you're not a total asshole you'll probably leave having made a few new friends.
I live 60 blocks away, and I'd still rather go here for a quick pint than any of the many bars near my home. In case you can't tell, it's my favorite bar in the city. Stop in for a drink, and see why for yourself.
I didn't have a chance to sample the menu, but as far as a bar goes this is tops - and will try the food very soon.
Having just begun exploring the 50th/9th area, was looking for a place to watch football (soccer to some) and saw the match on as I walked by - a clear reason to stop in. The service was awesome and clearly devoted to developing long term relationships - it seemed everyone was a regular, and despite it being my first stop, I felt like a regular pretty quick.
This is my new local, and will be back to watch football soon and often.
The common definition of hibernate is "the torpid or resting state in which some animals pass the winter ".
My suggestion is a slight revision: "The drinking state in which I pass the winter at Hibernia, a bar on 50th between 9th and 10th avenues."
Usage: I'm going to hibernate after work. Want a few rounds of hibernation? Etc..
Only a few blocks from Midtown in Hell's Kitchen, Hibernia is a sports bar but also just a great place to have a few beers after work in a comfortable, clean environment. (The bathroom is spotless).
Any bar that is playing the Buzzcocks and the Cure on the ol' audio sound blaster system wins a few points by default.
The space isn't that large but there's enough room for comfort if you can claim a table or corner of the bar. The crowd was a mix of the young, the flannel wearing, the wandering tourist family and after work office types.
Keep in mind that during NFL season this is a Steelers stronghold as evidenced by the memorabilia placed throughout the bar.
There's a respectable number of draught beers, including Smithwicks, Stella Artois, Guinness, Yuengling, Bluepoint Toasted Lager and more. I had the Blue Point Toasted Lager , which is made from six different malts including: English Pale, Crystal, Munich, Carapils, Wheat and Belgian Caravienna.
That's enough malt for a meal but I also tried their wings, which have a favorable reputation. Deserved? Definitely. Addictive? Potentially. They weren't stringy or malnourished nor were they over or under cooked.
One menu item I'd like to try when returning is the 'chip butty' , or hero with mayo and fries. Tater tots, nachos and other snacks are also available along with entrees like shepherd's pie, bangers and mash, fish and chips and a traditional irish fry-up.
Whether it's after work or a weekend at Hibernia's, this is a great spot for drinks and wings and more.
I went on an adventure with my friend, Matt, to find the best margarita in all of Hell's Kitchen. The following is a comprehensive review of the margarita experience with well tequila, whether it be Montezuma or some other gold stuff.
My Margarita: SHAKEN. This is CLUTCH, folks. You have to shake a margarita, or all the sour mix just kind of sits in your glass. That is why it's called sour MIX, you have to MIX it. This marg was well-mixed.
My Service: Jeff gave us pint glasses. I like pints.
Atmosphere: Busy
Hibernia has a few touches of green, white and orange. It also serves shots of Jameson, pours pints of Guinness, and cooks up some bland pub food. Essentially, it is just another generic Irish pub in NYC.
However, there is more than meets the eye here. The place stands out for being a Pittsburgh Steelers bar. Yes that same team that has won more Superbowls than any other team in NFL history and whose star player, Ben Roethlisberger, is known for all things 2. And by that I mean, he has 2 championship rings, 2 rape allegations, and could possibly having an IQ of about 2.
Speaking of the number 2, I ordered some Red Bull here and the bartender charged me $2 for a Red Bull. I could not find my $20 bill, so I have the guy my remaining $2 (in bills). However, I wanted to tip him, but only had a little over $2 remaining (in loose change). I placed the coins on the bar and he said he didn't want my change and pushed it back towards me. I insisted he take the money to pay for the drink and take the two bills I initially handed to him as his tip. But still, he refused.
I was offended. I just tipped you 100% for opening a small aluminum can. This bar may try to represent the blue collar atmosphere of Pittsburgh, but it still smells of Manhattan snottiness. Who does this "Bridge and Tunnel" looking bartender think he is?
In the end, to stay consistent with the theme and the fact I have visited better Irish pubs in NYC (and other cities), I will only award 2 stars.
I highly doubt I return for round 2.
*Proceeds to flash "peace" sign with 2 fingers*
Along the quest for, yes, even more buffalo wings, I saw on yelp people were excited by the ones here so we decided to swing by for dinner one night. Â
When we walked in, it seemed like it could be great. Â It's definitely an Irish sports bar. Â When we first got there, we weren't totally sure where to go to order food, but a man came over and was really friendly and brought up menus and beers. Â He raved about the wings, so we got excited for them. Â Maybe it was that he built them up so much, but they were a little dry for my liking. Â Not enough flavor, juice, meat. Â They were okay, but not what I was looking for. Â
It seems like a great place to watch a game, so I might go back for that, but I wouldn't head back for the wings alone.
Decent bar in the area. Â The bar is kinda small, but my friends and I had a good time. Â Nice mix of unpretentious people. Â Good prices as well. Â Odd mix of music which included Reel Big Fish and Sublime -- haven't heard that played in years at a bar.
Appears to be a Steelers bar too.
Generic irish pub for a drink or two with some buddies. This is the type of generic bar that you may or may not have stopped at on one of those bar hopping blackout nights. Youre not really sure whether you in fact have frequented this establishment before or if it just fits the generic pub prototype, giving it that air of familiarity. Whatever. Its chill and serves beer. SOLD.
The bartender was friendly and fun to joke around with.
When i went, there were a bunch of hot mess type cougars in the corner while the rest of the place were mid to late 20 somethings.
3 Stars because this place isnt anything spectacular, but its also a nice go to place for a quick no frills beer or meeting spot near my job.
Football Season
The #1 Pittsburgh Steelers Bar in NYC
I go by myself usually which is fine because I feel I'm among friends. We all have a common goal which is to cheer on the Steelers. Bring the Terrible Towel gals/guys and wear yellow and black.
Space is limited. Bartenders are friendly. Order the Wings.
Tip 1: To have a good experience at this bar on game day, it's recommended not to wear the opponents colors.
Tip 2: Ladies there's a bathroom downstairs that you can use.
I was mulling 2 stars because the crowd last night was not my style, but the friendly bartenders and strong pours made me go with a 3. Â I'd say there is potential to go up one star, or down one star, depending on our next experience.
The Superb: Â Bartenders were awesome. Â I enjoyed their beer selection: Â Dogfish, Guinness, Smithwicks, Sam Adams Seasonal, just to name a few.
The Average: Â The main floor was fairly average with well worn wooden benches and divider walls. Â There was an odd smell in there last night, and I am hoping it was just the group of guys behind us. Â
The Horrid: Â Nothing was really horrible.
It was packed with early-mid 20's types, bordering on hipster. Â We stayed for a drink and went on our way. Â We may be back to give their bar fare a go, but with so many other bars in the area, it may not be for a while.
Great bar in Hell's Kitchen - excellent vibe, good bar food, easy going bartenders and enough flat screens to each show a different sporting event.
I frequent this bar on random Sundays to grab a quick drink and end up spending hours here. Â Good standbys: cheezy tots and a Blue Moon.
Definitely in the theme of the Irish, with kitschy random leprechauns, Mardi Gra beads, this bar does not disappoint. Â There's plenty to do here to keep you entertained - a weirdly conversational book selection, assorted board game, a beta fish, free dart board - need I say more.
No decided college team supported, but definitely a Steelers bar.
This is my favorite bar in New York. Â The Guinness is always good, and the Burgers are great (which you can get with tater tots!). Â The bartenders are great craic as well. Â There's always a good vibe here that keeps me coming back. Â And there's even a beer garden downstairs for the summer months.
They also have Dogfish Head 60 Min, Chimay, and Blue Point on tap. Â Although I usually get the Guinness, there are times when I have to branch out and there's also something good to choose.
This is a big Steelers bar - be warned. Â As I am not a Steelers fan, I generally don't come here for football games but I hear great things from friends. Â There is a small but vocal Jets contingent there occasionally, which is nice. Â But definitely don't walk in with Ravens gear on and expect to make many friends.
Stop by, have a pint or two and you'll see why everyone keeps coming back.
Go and experience this amazing bar for yourself!! Here's my best attempt at describing how amazing this bar is!!
What my boyfriend and I LOVE about Hibernia (no particular order):
- the bartenders: are the owners(!!) - that pretty much sums it up; they're passionate, have a blast, know their customers and their drinks, everyone is family
- food: OMFG. THE BEST WINGS ON EARTH!! Order the "Fuego Wings - w/extra bleu cheese on the side" it's that good, none of that runny stuff. BEST POTATO SKINS!! They do not skimp on the bacon...or the cheese!!! They're just perfect. Toastie sando is also great, philly cheesesteak perfect (late nite drunken munchies), the sampler platter, mmmm the cheese fries or tater tots!!
- jukebox: keeps it fun!
- darts: same!! AND they host a tourney hahaa!
- hooks: every girl prefers this over hanging purse on the back of a chair!!
- bathroom: it's CLEAN!! and Spacious!! and it gets better... there's a hole (kept covered obviously) on bathroom door to get your mate out if they've passed out in there. (Yes, my boyfriend had to use it on me...hahahaa!)
- games: on the back wall they've got all the classics (Operation, Connect 4...now Connect 2, dominoes, Yahtzee, cards, etc)
- THE SHOE!!: hahahahaa!! They've got this pump (heel) a pretty, black, sparkly one(!!) that you take shots out of!! (check Hibernia out on fb, they've got tons of pix :) lolol)
- birthdays: if it's your birthday, they turn off the music, and the ENTIRE bar sings you happy birthday!!! how cool is that?!! (I was in there one night when they did this to someone, and I turned to my boyfriend, "Babe, I soooo wanna stop here first on my bday!!")
- other events: they do it BIG for every big holiday and sports event
- TVs: there's a HUGE projector screen that pulls down, and they've also got 3 other flat screens along the walls
I can go on and on :) those are my favorite things!!
ENJOY!!
5 stars, 6 stars if you are a Steeler's fan! Â (that would be 2 gold, 2 red, and 2 blue :-))
Went here to watch the AFC championship game on Sunday. Â I was definitely in good company rooting the Steeler's on to victory. Â They even have an oversized Terrible Towel. Â It's like a little Pittsburgh embassy in there replete with Iron City beer.
Okay, but what if you aren't a fan of the Steeler's or of football? Â Dont' worry. Â They have Chimay on tap. Â They have a really good bartender who is polite, friendly, and gets your drink order right away even with all of the noise and demand. Â They even have a good sampling of authentic Irish food on their menu. Â I liked their fish and chips. Â I really enjoyed the jalapeno poppers on their sampler platter. Â Those stood out, and are worth ordering by themselves. Â Not anything really to complain about. Â Enjoy!
