Great Sunday lunch of brisket and greens.  Corn pone was my favorite.  Excellent and friendly server Remy took extra time explaining the tea selections. Very fun place with a great vibe.

The smoked tofu scramble I ordered took forever to be prepared, but I was still served a bland undercooked mess--and there wasn't even that much of it.

Awesome food and tea with a cool ambiance. Worth it.

Brisket sandwich was good. Rather than saucy brisket, like I anticipated, it was relatively dry. I liked it though. The turnip greens it came with were delicious too.

If I was a tea connoisseur, I would probably have enjoyed the diversity of the menu more -- seriously, they had probably thirty different types of tea... my coffee was served a bit too cool. Which is a bummer.

Good Brunch, gave a different take on some classic brunch dishes with a southern twist.  Comfortable place to hang out and read the paper on a lazy Sunday.  Everyone seemed to know each other, loved that neighborhood feel.

Well butter my buns and call me a biscuit! I may have a new favorite cozy spot in downtown Louisville.

I visited Hillbilly Tea recently for a small party and was so glad to get to try the place out.  It's rustic with quaint touches like dried flowers in old watering cans, tea in mason jars, and the authentic hardwood floors add to the authentic feel.  Our service was impeccable, I would definitely recommend this place and its catering services to anyone needing a place to feed a crowd.

A few of the gastronomic highlights were the Benedictine sandwiches and the red velvet cupcakes.  Both are worth ordering if you find yourself at Hillbilly tea for mealtime.  I would imagine its a place where there is not a bad thing on the menu (unless you don't like one of the components), as everything tasted extremely fresh.  I will look forward to branching out what I sample the next time I am there.

If you're ever in Louisville, you've got to check out this little mom and pop place in the Downtown area. From the moment you walk in, you will feel at home. It's just so cute and quaint!

We had the brisket and pone today (they were out of the pork and the regular brisket sandwich) and it was absolutely spectacular. I loved the presentation and I thought the portion was just right for lunch. You will want to make room for their Bourbon bread.

And please make sure you don't go home without trying their hot tea. Absolutely amazing and Instagram worthy!

    I'll definitely be back.

This place rocks! The catfish is amazing and lots of awesome teas. Definitely a place I recommend to people that are looking for food around the NuLu area of Louisville.

Great find! Tucked away off-the-beaten-path between Main and Market this homespun gourmet tea shop surprisingly offers a full menu. They're serious about their tea, serious about their moonshine, and serious about infusing moonshine with tea = Tea Hooch. Didn't try the food, will be back...

After receiving an incredibly thoughtful response/apology from Kyle, the owner of Hillbilly Tea, I wanted to write an update. I wanted to clarify that I was not expecting a huge 16oz portion of meat as I would receive at chain restaurant. I wished to communicate that there was a disconnect between the quality and price point. I would have loved a small portion of the brisket of the caliber that I had at Khyber Pass Pub in Philadelphia, which is not quite Texas joint caliber but darn near close. Brisket that good would have made my night along with the wonderful tea and fritters.

The management at Hillbilly Tea certainly knows what they are doing. As a researcher of corporate crisis communication, I know a lot about best practice in responding to negative publicity and feedback. Kyle could not have given a better  response. He showed just how invested he is in making his restaurant great and building a relationship with his diners. It would have been easy to ignore, discount, or become defensive at my comments, but he engaged thoughtfully. I was very impressed.

So, wow.  LOVE this place.  I have visited about a half dozen times, always good!

The Service -overall very good (like running out and putting change in the meter for me when they make change)  BUT they can be a wee bit slow if you're particular about that.

The Culture - they locally source and rotate the menu for what's in season.  I can get with that!

The Atmosphere - makes me actually proud of my bluegrass roots.  Dark but full of little fascinations and local history.

The Food - Fantastic flavors and food pairings that are creative and kind of inspiring to this cook.  A new twist on local fare.  Small portions, (ie. reasonable and European), reasonably priced, really excellent for breakfast!

    Agreed, the coffee is SCANDALOUS!!!

    I. Love. This. Place.

Tea (and coffee - yes, I had some ... SCANDALOUS) were really good. And food was incredible. Be prepared for smaller portions, but larger joy.

Get the corn-fried tofu dumpling things if they're available. They are actually a blend of seitan and tofu, so the texture is more substantial. And the dipping sauce is awesome. I believe I had a tofu scramble that came with the most delightful vegan scone ever, with rosemary honey. So much yum.

Wow, I really like this place for brunch and it almost deserves five stars...except my poached egg wasn't quite poached.  Ugh...I really wanted to give you five stars too.  But that doesn't mean you still shouldn't come here.  We also got the pancakes which were awesome, the bazooka joe tea is awesome (tastes just like the bubble gum), and the sausage is exactly what sausage should taste like.  If you're in Louisville, you have to make a visit here, how can you not with the name!

Stopped here with my mom our our way from Florida to South Bend, and it reminded me of a trendy cafe I grew up with.  We had the brisket sandwich with the chow-chow (EXCELLENT) and the fish cake sandwich. I had a small issue with my meal, and they handled it SO well. They immediately offered to make me something else and even packed up a free dessert to go and a tin of my favorite tea. Great staff. Wish I lived nearby, I would definitely be back!

Recently ate Sunday brunch here with two vegetarians and two omnivores while visiting the town. It had a unique country-hipster atmosphere - a hard combo but they pull it off.  Food was excellent. Portions were perfect for a healthy lifestyle - filling but not gut-busting. Our server was attentive and friendly. Food came out in a timely fashion. Everybody in my group left happy.

TEA: The chai tea was excellent - perfect ratio of spicy tea, milk, and not-too-much sweetener. The Darling tea (darjeeling w/ hint of tobacco) was also delicious. My sis had Horney Goat - not to my taste but she liked it enough to buy some to take home.

    FOOD: Our table had
*Liver bites appetizer (tasty, garlic mayo was homemade and awesome)
*Smoked tofu scramble w/rosemary scone (scone = EPIC! scramble = pretty decent)
*Hillbilly Deluxe (potato hash was amazing, rest of platter was pretty good)
*side of sweet potatoes (also EPIC - perfectly cooked, excellent balance of buttery, sweet but not overly so)

Overall, very enjoyable experience. I liked that the teas were available for purchase. Would definitely go again when in Louisville.

Really awesome and original spot. I've been here for breakfast and lunch. Had the eggs with pork belly and sausage for breakfast. Had their chicken soup and chicken salad for lunch. Everything was delicious, fresh and had a great presentation. A lot of menu items you wont see at the average lunch/diner spot. Their teas were all really good too. Definitely recommend here if your in the area and want to try something new.

I really like Hillbilly Tea. I still haven't had breakfast there even though that seems to be how they started, but I have enjoyed lunch and dinner. It's actually become my go-to downtown spot for visitors to the area because it's nice but not ridiculously expensive and the seasonal menu is short and vaguely southern but the portion sizes are not. I tend to order a few small items to make a meal.

I have had a number of interesting soups there, including a strawberry soup. While I like their vegetarian/vegan dishes, my favorite meal there was a grilled pork chop. It was perhaps the only time I've ordered an entree and it was cooked to perfection and served with very tasty sides. I know I shouldn't hope to see it on the menu again, but my point is they know how to cook meat well.

The decor is charmingly rustic without being over the top. The staff is always courteous. The teas and desserts are great. And the always thoughtful but ever-changing menu keeps me coming back.

    Such cute decor.
Stopped by on my way from MA to CA (driving).  All the food was fantastic but the main thing on my mind is their strawberry soup.
    So. delicious.

Also the server was SO awesome.  She was friendly, bubbly, and apparently studied the history of Kentucky or something.  She gave us lots of help and info for our trip out.

My friend and I cleaned our plates.

I also bought a few of their teas and right now, I'm really loving their Sweet Dreams chamomile looseleaf.  It's perfect!

It's not necessarily a 5-star "as good as it gets" but it definitely hits the spot!

This place is a solid 4.  You wont be definitely wont be disappointed.  Your mind may not be blown, but I still found myself pleasantly surprised at the attention to detail and i can see this place getting into 5 star territory.

    Tea:
We both started with a cup of green tea.  The tea is a little pricey at 3-5$, but if you appreciate tea, you find a list of about 20 well curated teas that comes to you in the most dainty little presentation that will make you feel warm and fuzzy inside.

    Food:
We decided to split a couple apps, sides and then one entree for lunch.  Notable was the mushroom burger, though I feel they could chose better bread, but the tasty patty made up for it not to mention the delectable tomato rosemary relish that comes on the side (yum!!).  For sides we got the white bean fritters which were amazing!  I have never had a fritter that focuses more on the creamy beans than the bready batter.  Its fried just enough to give the outside a thin crisp that then melts when you bite into the soft gooey inside!  Some of the sides like the sweet potatoes were nothing terribly unique, but still solid.

Overall, everything is solid with a few surprises in store!

Met a few friends here last night to catch up and try out a new spot. Excellent atmosphere. Rustic urban with earthy moss tones everywhere. Interesting old country photos, blankets, old rickety chairs with wicker seats... Dixie hipster.

The smells are where it's really at though. The smells. The food made me all nostalgic for my great grandmother's kitchen (large german woman, loved to cook with gravies) I think I may have salivated a little. Then there's the tea aromas. Our very perky, very friendly server brought us a little tray of tiny jars of tea so that we could catch a whiff and decide on our beverages. I really wanted the Smoky Mountain Chai, unfortunately they were out so I opted for the Iced Sweet Dream.

We weren't terribly hungry so we just ordered some appetizers. Corn Pone Johnny Cakes and White Bean and Sage Fritters. The fritters were super dense and filling. The corn pone cakes were doused in some kind of amazing gravy with mushrooms and tomatoes. Delectable. After apps we shared the Bread Pudding, which they served to us even though we didn't eat our meat. AMAZING! Cakey bread covered in decadent warmed bourbon sauce and topped with meringue... I could have licked the plate, I would have if I had been at home.

I need to check this place out again when I have a bigger appetite. I don't think they'll beat my grandmother's cooking, but I think they'll be a strong second.

Like Steve W., I, too wish I could bring this place back to Milwaukee. Our lunch was fantastic. They use a lot of local produce, have a huge selection of teas, and all of their desserts are delish and made in-house. The service was fabulous and attentive, without being all up in our grills. The rustic decor was welcoming and cozy.

We shared the spicy cheese spread and I refrained from licking the plate. I'm so well behaved! I also got the cauliflower soup, butternut squash salad, and mint green tea. It was all really good. My husband got a cornish hen and raved about it.

We were pretty full, but wanted to enjoy dessert, so we got some to go - strawberry cake with orange buttercream frosting, a chai chocolate chip cookie, and a cupcake with macha icing.

This is a must if you're in Louisville.

After eating lunch at Hillbilly Tea today with a friend of mine, I have to say that i'm in love. For starters, I really enjoy the atmosphere. The upstairs feels very open with exposed brick walls and hardwood floors that remind me of burnt oak barrels. Fresh flowers in shot glasses line every table, along with mismatched chairs, makes it feel warm and inviting.

The menu wasn't very extensive (I think it changes on a fairly regular basis) but it all looked great. I decided on the special, which was comprised of pork belly and fresh greens on focaccia bread with some sort of tomato jam and corn on the cobb for $10. It was DELICIOUS. In addition to this I also ordered the horny goat iced tea and Old Rose cocktail which were also quite tasty.

Service is not usually my primary focus when eating out, since I'm used to getting pretty terrible service at the majority of the Louisville restaurants I frequent. However, at Hillbilly Tea our server went above an beyond. He was attentive, friendly, funny, and made some excellent recommendations.

Maybe it has something to do with my American sensibilities but my only complaint was that I found the portion sizes to be a bit small. Other than that the food was delicious, the service was great. I'll definitely be back.

Great, chill ambiance on a Saturday morning, perfect for whiling away that pesky hangover. Awesome space, makes me want to start building stuff. I could easily do a photo shoot here (All random thoughts while I was there).

Loved this place. Delicious food, cool employees, and the kind of vibe that just made you feel better about choosing the place for brunch. Clearly the tea is a draw, but the brunch plates are equally fantastic. Shame I don't live closer, otherwise I'd definitely be here every weekend. Looking forward to going back, for sure.

My husband and I were looking for something tasty, different and uniquely Luevull when we came to town to celebrate a year of marriage. We definitely found it here on a Sunday morning!

We were seated right away, and our server greeted us with compliments on our facial hair and tattoos. I'll let you deduce who got what compliment. He was very knowledgable about the menu and made good, honest suggestions. Kyle started with coffee (served in a beer stein) and I went with the Sweet Grass Tea on the recommendation of our server (whose name escapes me, but he looked like a Matt, so we'll call him that) with milk and the most amazing, earthy, citrus-y honey I've ever had. I was a little skeptical to order a cup of $4.25 tea, but it was very worth it.

Kyle ended up with the Scramble and a side of bacon; I went with the White Bean and Sage Fritters and the vegan cinnamon raisin scone. The scone was almost too crumbly to pick up, but I was impressed with how buttery and non-vegan it tasted. The fritters were just heavenly. I am plotting to try and recreate them at home (and fully expecting to fail miserably). My husband doesn't get that excited about food, but he enjoyed his meal as much he is able to. I tried a piece of the bacon - it was crisp and not overly greasy or smoky.

The service we received was excellent - "Matt" didn't hover but he was very attentive. We did notice that a couple who came in and went upstairs after we were seated left a few minutes later - I'm not sure if they had something come up or there was an issue with the herd of hipster girls who were seated upstairs at the same time.

We took a couple cornmeal sugar cookies home with us - Kyle wasn't a fan, but I liked them. Our bill came to right around $30, which I think was very reasonable for the quality of food and service that Hillbilly Tea offers. We left wishing our tiny hometown offered something like this... but we'll definitely be back on our next trip.

This is really more of a 3.5 review, but alas yelp made me choose.

The space itself is beautiful. It is a stripped down raw space feel w. country flair. I really was in aw of the decor itself. The wait staff was nice and attentive and experience wise I'd give them 4 stars.

The food, it was hit or miss for me. I started with the simple harvest salad they had on their menu and it wasn't anything to write home about. But someone else had the chilled peach soup and I thought that was pretty good. For my main I had the smoked catfish, which was just really off for me. The smoked flavor for warm/mild fish was just overwhelming. It's kinda also left a weird vibe in my head regarding eating catfish. Hence the 3star food review.  We finished with the bread pudding which was delish, but very sweet.

I don't live in the area but I if I did I'd try again to see if it was just what I ordered. But because I don't and maybe you don't either choose wisely before making it your only meal in Louisville.

I had no reference point for what a trendy spin on Appalachian cuisine would look and taste like, but just a visit or two to Hillbilly Tea and it's clear that this place nails the combo of these two opposing forces! The options on the menu have a base in southern cookin' but Hillbilly tea has taken those dishes to a foodie level.

My first foray into the food was the bizarre assortment of delicious small plate esque dishes that comprised the Hillbilly Platter. Pork fried popcorn, biscuit and apple butter, candied nuts were a few of the highlights. However, the smoked chicken salad was by far my favorite of the array and I usually don't even like chicken salad because they're usually too mayo-ey. Apparently they also use rosemary in the chicken salad, and despite not usually liking that either, I still LOVE this salad.

Rosemary made another appearance during most recent trip to Hillbilly Tea for brunch in my scrambled eggs and potato hash. It was a little much for my taste, but overall a solid brunch. Good place to break out of the norm of brunch spots and typical omelet or pancake offerings. Heads up on the eggs, biscuits and gravy: the lemon (not mentioned on the menu but very present) in the gravy really stands out. It wasn't to my taste.

Everything from the menu selection to the atmosphere screams the theme of southern hillbilly sophistication. Right down to rusted patina on the mismatched silverware, Hillbilly Tea is the kid who shows up to school dressed up as his book report character on presentation day. The overt Southern presence this place has means we can chalk one up for the South in the eternal South or Midwest debate.

Sadly we got this as takeout, so I did not get a chance to see the restaurant, but the food we got was great!

Sadly they messed up our order, so my food never actually got to me. Luckily someone gave me their lunch which was great (catfish and greens).

Warning - portions are very small. I think it's because they are trying to serve "tea" instead of full meals, but what I ordered was not quite adequate for a full day of work.

The iced tea was some of the best I've had - a really delicate and nice flavor, not tannic like most tea. It came sweetened, which is not my favorite, would like to have tried it without the sugar too.

In town for a weekend music festival when my friend and I stumbled unto Hillbilly Tea for brunch. What luck!! The food was AMAZING!!! True southern eats infused with the fresh, healthy, local ingredients we weren't excepting!

I had the chicken salad served with a grilled baguette and grapes.  I don't know for sure but I think a yogurt base dressing was used instead of the usual heavy mayonnaise dressing. The salad was so fresh and light and truthfully the best chicken salad I've ever eaten.

We had the sweet black tea (caffeinated) and it was exactly what we expected sweet and delicious. They offer a variety of speciality teas like the cucumber ginger tea which I heard from the table behind ours the tea was also delicious.

Overall Hillbilly Tea is worth every moment you may have to spend waiting to get a table.

Wow. True country food to the core. I feel like I'm 5 years old again sitting at my mamaw's vinyl kitchen table, feet dangling under my chair, her at the stove and the chickens clucking outside the window....

Okay, so if you're in a hurry, sorry 'bout ya, but I think it's totally worth the wait! Every little detail has been taken into account, down to the burlap curtains. And the music! I could sit here and sip an Ale81 all afternoon. Can't wait to take all my out of town friends here! (and the ones in town, too!) oh, and the sell adult beverages now. too. just icing on the cake!

A zombie, a doctor, and a vampire walk into a bar to order chicken livers and greens....

I have read so much about this place that I was ready to be a fan.  Southern food with a hipster feel is right up my alley so this should have been an easy home run.  While everything was "good enough" I really can't find anything to rave about.

I will start with the service which was mediocre. The waitress did mess up several items because she seemed to avoid looking our way. In her defense, we had just left a horror film convention and one of our party was in full Zombie makeup and I was wearing Lestat vampire lenses.

This is a place known for tea. There is several varieties of hot and cold tea and we opted for  the "black" iced tea.  The tea was one of the better items.  It was served unsweetened but it didn't need sugar. There is a subtle sweetness that made it perfect just the way it was.

We asked the waitress what brand of tea it was so we could get some for home use but no luck. When we asked the name,  she looked confused and her response was "It's normal black tea."

Overall they have a very limited menu.  For appetizers our group ordered Chicken Livers and White Bean Fritters.  I am not an organ meat fan so I can't speak to the livers but two in our group said they were good and they loved the mustard sauce that comes on the side.  The white bean fritters had a decent flavor but the mushy texture made the entire dish seem odd. Since they look like a hushpuppie you expect a bread like texture but once you bite in you get something similar to refried beans.  It came with a tartar dipping sauce but my companions decided the fritters were much better when dipped in the mustard sauce that came with the fried livers.

We ordered the catfish but they had ran out, even though it was only 5 pm on a Friday night. Instead I opted for the fish sandwhich with a side of braised greeens.  The sandwhich was okay but reminded me of the fish patties you get in the school cafeteria. The greens were a little undercooked. Southern greens are normally cooked well and seasoned with some form of animal fat.  These were still firm and little if any seasoning.

My companions enjoyed the meal but no one was overly impressed. For desert we tried the Bread Pudding and Lavender Buttercream cake. The lavender frosting was very good and my friend liked the actual cake. I felt it was okay but the infusion of tea into the cake was overkill.

I am a bread pudding snob so it takes a lot to impress me. This was a moist and flavorful bread pudding topped with a fabulous meringue.  The only drawback was the thick bourbon sauce that had a scorched taste that overpowers the rest of the dish.

The place has a cute decor and it feels comfortable and relaxing. The drinks were served in very small mason jelly jars. I understand the desire to be "cute and trendy" but at $8 a drink you expect a glass that holds more than 4 ounces including ice.

Whoa. This is Louisville? I am so proud of my hometown. As a surly teen, this is exactly the kind of place I had in mind that would make Looavul cool. Now, as a surly adult, I am pleased to come home and dine at a place that fits into any big city restaurant scene. Hillbilly Tea, from the name to the location to the menu, is a quintessential Louisville establishment and highlights so many of the wonderful qualities that makes Louisville unique, a little weird and a perennial up-n-comer on the national food scene.

To begin with, order some tea. It's in the name. Each tea order comes with it's own pot and specialized cup. Don't expect something futuristic. Think 'Aunt Blanche' but 'Aunt Blanche' is very in and hip these days, so it's all good. My tea of choice was a hot 'sweet' one made with African honey. The 'sweet' is relative. Even though this is Louisville, we're not home to automatic sweet sweet tea. This tea was 'sweet', like "You're not *really* putting sugar in your tea" sweet. I used my imagination, squinted real hard and thought that I tasted the sugary sweet I craved. I did taste hints of honey, so there's that. And, I drank a full pot of tea... so, there's that. It was pretty satisfying.

But, not as satisfying as the food. You'll get 'small' plates here, but I don't think you're going to want to share. Start with some white bean & sage fritters for a new taste on a familiar classic but don't spend too much time on that app, because there's another old favorite that's received a face lift here. The chicken salad served in the corn pone and adorned with roasted apple & rosemary. Wow. I expected a safe favorite and I received a very nice surprise. And, that surprise goes well with the overall vibe at HT. Located in a part of downtown that I never spent much time in (even when going to school a few blocks away), the exposed brick, cool art and open concept second-floor add together to create a destination for resident, tourist and prodigal son alike. Come here.

You know a place that offers bacon on their "Vegan" burger is a bit quirky.  (I really want to meet that dude who orders a Vegan burger and adds the bacon).

I had the Vegan burger sans bacon.  I usually don't like veggie burgers but this was the best one I've eaten.  It also came with a side of roasted apples.  The roasted apples were amazing.

I will go back to try out more things on their menu.  It looks promising.

This review is so close to a 5, it's not even funny.

We loved almost everything about Hillbilly Tea. The atmosphere and decor was great. It takes a lot of skill to create an environment that is both trendy and cozy, and Hillbilly Tea has skillzz. Our server was on point -- he was friendly, helpful and amazingly knowledgeable (especially since my mom asked him about almost every single item on the menu!) And the food was delicious! I had the duck burger, my wife had the skillet pancake and the Hillbilly scramble, my mom had the pork & pone and my dad had the smoked chicken salad. And all of us were both impressed and satisfied...well, satisfied enough to want to add to our order a piece of their flourless chocolate cake made with earl grey tea.

Some really high, highlights? The skillet pancake with tea butter, the duck burger, the pulled pork, the pit roasted sweet potatoes (dipped in whatever delicious sauce they brought out with my burger) and their flourless chocolate cake.

So why not 5-stars? Two reasons:

    1) I was pretty unimpressed with our tea. My mom and dad both got hot tea, which they enjoyed. My wife and I ordered a quart of cold "go boy" tea and at $3.25 it left a lot to be desired.

    2) I need an excuse to go there again.

We really REALLY wanted to like this place. A southern restaurant in Louisville!? Yes please! (we were on vacation)

The decor was adorable but very trendy. Slap anything on a piece of barnwood and it's instantly shabby chic!

Our waiter was very very nice but when we asked what he recommended he couldn't really tell us because he had only ever tried one thing :(

We ordered the Mint iced tea to start. It was ok but didn't have any real depth.. Just a heavy minty flavor with nothing to balance it out.
Our silverware was tucked into cutely wrapped napkins held together with clothespins and the silverware had a lovely vintage look and feel to it.. Except I'm not so sure in this case vintage = good because it just looked dirty and slightly unappetizing. That also could have been because not one but two of the glasses at our table had lipstick on them from a previous guest.

And then there was the food.. My husband had the pork & pone which was pretty good but very very tiny and I had the porkbelly.. Which was not very good at all, tiny, and sitting on top of very burned corn pone. The whole thing was dry and the only reason I finished it was because it cost a whopping $13.00!  My daughter had the skillet pancake which was alright but the herb infused butter was overwhelming and too savory for a breakfast dish.
In total our bill was $43.00 and way way too high for the quality and amount of food that was served.

Over all it's a cute place if you're looking for somewhere trendy to hang out and have tea with friends ( it comes complete with a very bored looking hipster employee who sits in the corner looking generally unhappy to be there).. But this place is more about looking trendy and serving overly done trendy looking food than it is about serving true southern fare.
    2 points for trying though!

If only I could have fit you in my carry-on and taken you back to Milwaukee with me!

OMG, this place is simply amazing.

I stopped in for lunch while in town for a conference, and I went back for breakfast the next day!

I had the duck hamburger with a side of the sweet potatoes with a vegan cup cake for dessert.  Breakfast, the next day, i had the vegan skillet pancake with a side of bacon.  For realz....the food was amazing.  The pancake had a smoked fruit compote.  I'm not kidding you when I tell you that i licked the little jar it came in.  I'm not embarrassed to admit that.

The food is prepared and served with such integrity.  I don't think I've said that about many of the meals I've enjoyed.

The tea and coffee were equally as wonderful.  The staff are great.

Thank you, hillbilly tea.  I hope to visit again!

I first reviewed hillbilly tea immediately after my first trip there and have been back many times since. So many times, in fact, that I have been here more than any other restaurant in Louisville. And for some reason, I have stubbornly been holding out from updating my review to a 5. Even as I had brunch at hillbilly today, I was thinking of crafting a list of things hillbilly can do to get up to a 5, including putting the scotch egg on the weekend brunch menu and not just limiting it to weekday breakfasts (seriously hillbilly tea, make this happen!). But once I took the first bite of my yet another amazing meal, I realized these games are futile: hillbilly tea is simply amazing and deserves to be rated amongst the best of Louisville.

As mentioned above, I have been here numerous times over the last year and have never been the least bit disappointed. This restaurant has more recently had a bit of an overhaul, including adding an upstairs dining area and redoing their menu for breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner. On my most recent dinner visit, I had the opportunity to sample the new dinner menu, which was set up as a three-course dinner option only, wherein you selected a salad, soup, and entree. I had the pork belly for this dinner, which was amazing, along with the salad and soups that I had (I just checked the website and didn't see this dinner menu listed, so perhaps they have changed back to an a la carte menu).

Even though hillbilly is constantly changing (maybe sometimes too often for their own good), I have never been disappointed, so perhaps I should just let hillbilly do whatever suits its whimsy and continue to come back for amazing experiences. hillbilly tea deserves to be mentioned amongst the most revered and cherished restaurants in the city. If you haven't been yet, get there soon. If you have been at some point in the past, give it another shot, odds are you will have a completely different experience. If definitely seems to me that hillbilly tea has solely been gaining some traction with its local reputation and I would love to see that trend continue. Here's to many more enjoyable meals at hillbilly tea!

Sigh.  I wanted to have 5-star love for Hillbilly Tea.  After driving by for ages, finally made my inaugural visit.  (clearly, I'm no early adopter)

The space is adorable.  The presentation is adorable - I love the little wood rounds they serve your tea on.  The itsy bitsy pots of honey were completely adorable.  Let me say adorable again.  The staff was pleasant and attentive.

The tea was really super good.  I almost climbed across the table when my neighbor's tea arrived.  I didn't try the Horny Goat, but the smell was amazing.  I had the Swamp Tea - which has a delightfully swampy color, but is generally nutty and pleasant to drink.

See?  Look how good they're doing?  Five stars, right?

Alas, my skillet cake was straight up burnt.  And the chai butter, while delicious, couldn't quite camouflage the scorched taste.  I'll give 'em another go, but as much as I love the idea of vegan-friendly, local food - there's no excuse for poor execution.
