The definition of hidden gem! My friends and I had an awesome and huge meal, really delicious, and - grand total of $45 for 3 entrees and 3 apps. If you're looking for romance or ambiance, it's not for you, but if you want totally unpretentious great food in a divey strip-mall setting, you can't miss.
Review Source:I'm obviously going to be a tough critic of Indian food after living in England where they joke chicken tikka masala is the national dish but jeez I wish we had better Indian food in MN. The killer at Indian Cafe is the SALT. Chicken Mahkani, Saag Paneer and the Dal are just ridiculously salty...back to Bombay Bistro for me.
Review Source:I must say, this is probably the best tandoori chicken I've had, mostly because it was charred to perfection with minmal fat. The naan was served hot (as it should), Â and the buffet is $7.95.
I think this is more of a place that I would go to for a quick fix, because the raita and the basmati rice are behind the lunch counter; it's just more convenient to have it out to serve yourself. Â The raita also has a spicy kick to it, which I'm not used to (I eat it to cool me off, not add flames to the fire). Overall, still pretty good.
Small place hidden in Bloomington, but if you find it (thanks to yelp), you'll realize that they actually make excellent Indian food!! Their chicken biryani and murgh malai pasanda was delicious - very well cooked, flavorful and finger licking good! Must try the Peshawari naan - it's slightly sweet but a great compliment to spicy food... I will definitely be picking up again whenever I am at MSP airport.
Review Source:Excellent food + Online Ordering + Pickup/Delivery
This is a Yelp find for me. I didn't know anything about this place before I went there except for seeing the sign. I live in the area, it's Saturday night and I want some food.
I found the website via Yelp and though I could see the menu options, I couldn't find prices and when I called, I was told there is no delivery available after 9:30p. I've since discovered that by clicking on a link on their website, their entire menu is available online with pricing and the ability to order online and pick up. Ordering online gets big points from me.
I know this strip mall. It's got several restaurants and a few stores including an Indian grocer I've shopped at. Across Portland Ave is another Indian market. This makes this place pretty centralized for south-central Asian folks in the south suburbs.
The door for the place is a bit hidden behind a pillar, and the windows are curtained, but when I opened the door, I saw the cafe was PACKED with south-central Asian folks. Good sign. There are 10 4-top tables and almost everyone was full 1/2 hour before they were supposed to close.
I usually do a buffet at a new place, but I didn't have a chance this time. I ordered some favorites.
The food is very good. I didn't order a particular spice level and the way it came was perfect for me. I ordered vegetable samosas, onion naan, raita, and chicken shai korma. I am in love with this korma. Portion sizes are excellent.
I highly recommend and I plan to become a regular. I am thrilled to have another delivery option that isn't pizza or Chinese.
I love the vege Samosa. It came with spicy red and mint sauce. I love spicy Briyani but since I am on business trip and I have many meeting that week, I decided to try something non-spicy. Based on the recommendation of a customer, I decided to try the Chicken Fried Rice which according to my standard is just 2 stars and was not that great. Overall, the price for dinner from the menu is on the high side but the service and owner are very friendly.
Review Source:Best Indian buffet I have been to in the Twin Cities in the past couple of years. Â My favorite, a small family-run place near Maple Grove, closed about 10 years ago when the family moved back to India. Â This is similar, but more hole-in-the wall. Â Very friendly and personal attention, especially considering I went for the buffet.
Amazing assortment of vegetarian and chicken dishes. Â Much spicier than any of the other Indian restaurants I have been to. Â Buffet is now around $10, but the food is worth it.
I will be going back regularly.
NOTE: Space is limited, with only about a dozen tables, so groups larger than 4-6 might be difficult.
My first night in Minneapolis and I was craving some butter chicken. So using my handy dandy yelp app on my Iphone, it pointed my to India Cafe.
The food was ok at best. The only thing that was off the chart was the tandoori chicken. I ordered 2 orders of Naan and it only came out to be 2 half moons.
Allo Bonda (allo tiki) was a definitely hand made however was a bit chunky and was lacking on any flavor. Just a bit of salt would've made it better.
The Butter Chicken good but nothing extraordinary.
The service was nothing spectacular. The dining are was very basic and provided not ambiance.
Honeslty it was good but with Kabob's (next review)in the same strip mall it's hard to see how this place is in business.
Normally I avoid restaurants located in strip malls. Â The fact that this one is located very near an adult toy store and a dollar store, didn't leave me feeling that this would be a place for a great meal. Â
Despite driving past this place daily on my way to work, I avoided this place, that is until I learned you can place orders online for pick-up. Â I decided to give it a whirl.
I wish I had done so sooner.
It's a tiny hole-in-the-wall, but they are cranking out some damn fine food. Â Malabar goat curry, mattar paneer, chana masala, dosas, and these delicious pancake type things that I can neither pronounce nor spell off the top of my head, but they're fricken addictive.
I got a discount when I placed my first order, which was a pleasant surprise. Â My food was ready when I arrived and was carefully packed enough that it managed to survive my crazy driving all the way back to Minnetonka without so much as a leak, which is no small feat.
This is Minnesota's only hole in the wall Indian restaurant. I live right by the joint and I come here regularly for their Chana Batura. The Batura is done so well that I complain to my mom for not making it like theirs. Their Mango lassi is pretty good and everything else on the menu smells great since I always get the Chana Batura when Im there.
Review Source:The Twin Cities' best Indian food. Really.
This little hole in the wall isn't pretty. But it has a certain positive ambiance, driven by the sometimes chaotic energy.
Most important, the food is excellent all around. And the menu is full of items not found in most (any?) other Indian places in town. Dosa, idli, coconut rice, items with curry leaves, fish curries, egg curries....
We come here regularly for dinner. But the best deal is the buffet. It's always different. And it always has surprises. We will find a couple of standard items to satisfy the usual tastes, but often we find things not even on the menu. (My favorite discovery is Cabbage Thoran, a crispy sort of coleslaw and coconut dish that's hard to describe beyond "delicious.") As an example, they usually serve a couple kinds of rice, but I've only once seen white rice. Instead, a biryani, tamarind rice, jeera rice, another biryani, the above-mentioned coconut rice, you name it.
I have put off writing this review for too long. I've been selfishly hoping this place wouldn't become too popular. Only forty seats, so it can be crowded. Especially with the line that sometimes builds up for takeout. But I love the food and the people here too much. It's not only my favorite Indian restaurant, it's one of my top five, period.
Weekday lunch: $7.50 for buffet+tax - excellent price. The selection was not as varied as it is at $10-11 places but all the main staples are there.
The food is tasty, spicy, fresh, constantly refilled. Tandoori chicken is very tender and flavorful - absolutely marvelous! There are multiple rice dishes - rice with vegetables, lemon rice, and rice with goat meat - all are delicious. There are a few vegetarian selections, so for those who are trying to avoid meat - you'll have plenty of choices. The sign outside claims that they only use halal meat. I can definitely say that the chicken and goat are better than most Indian places I've been to.
The water is filtered - big plus. The people were polite and prompt. I will certainly go back for more.
Raita and mint sauce are available upon request.
Weekend buffet here rocks! Â Service was awesome! Â Food was fantastic! Â Not much of an atmosphere but when you are eating such good food you just don't care. Â The other nice thing here is that if they have a buffet happening you are not forced to eat it, you are free to order off the menu if you wish.
Review Source:Buried in an unassuming Bloomington strip mall is the India Café. I went here a few months ago and it very much reminded me of those "fast food" Indian places in Ireland and the U.K. (You order at the counter, the plates were stark white, the furniture was very utilitarian.) I went back two weeks ago and the atmosphere changed- there were nicer pictures on the wall, a waitress actually took our order. Well, it turns out the Indian Café has had a change of ownership and the change is for the better. Not only is a woman's touch more noticeable, but the food has improved very much. The saag paneer that I ordered was made with the freshest of the fresh spinach, the naan was soft, the mango lassi was delicious. I highly recommend this place if you are in the mood for some good, reasonably priced Indian food. One of the only disadvantages to this place is that it is kind of small.
