The Rover is one of my favorite spots in Astoria. Sometimes its crowded and some nights its quiet. I'm Irish and when I'm here I just get this feeling of HOME. The bartenders are awesome, super friendly, never had one that had an attitude. Always paying attention to what you order and they are very generous. PLUS the owner and a lot of regulars there are 49er fans so its a pleasant place to watch games during Football season!
Review Source:Stopped by here one night to catch an NBA playoffs game, seems like an alright place with average priced beers, maybe a little expensive for its location even. Â They have two dart boards, though only one of them seemed to be operational at the time I went. Â They also have the newest Golden Tee Live there, which is a huge plus in my book (without that and the darts this bar would kinda suck).
Problem is we wanted to play a game of darts after we drank our first beer. Â Were about to play when a rowdy group of three obviously tanked guys decided to play, fine whatever, will play after them. Â However after asking if we could get the next game they continued to not play, eat chips, guzzle beers, arm wrestle and annoy everyone in the bar. Â My problem is these guys were out of controla and unruly to the point they would want to fight someone if you said that they should give up the dart board. Â The bar had plenty of staff including guys there that could have dispatched of this problem, however, it seemed like they decided to ignore it which was disappointing.
We ended up staying to watch nearly the end of the game and these guys were STILL on the dartboard, I'm talking like three hours later, it was ridiculous.
Overall - average bar, for sure over rated in my book....not sure what the real draw is here.
I've officially christened this place as my official neighborhood bar. There are too many in Astoria that are a bit too trendy for my tastes, and when I want to grab a drink after work I would much rather come here. The bartender is really friendly and, as everyone mentioned, 3rd round is generally on the house. It's a true locals pub!
Review Source:Fantastic!
We were just here and I have to say...this now is on my list as well.
We stumbled into this place by "Luck"
My friend J parked his car around my house ( which is about 10 blocks away)..and we both had some time to kill between.
We wanted to have a couple of beer  and couldn't find convenient parking spots for other bar we go to. ....so ..we .simply went to the bar that is closest from where we park.
.
As I always say..it is the "BARTENDER" who makes all the differences in the world for bar.......and Mike is just that bartender.
I had my usual Guinness .....and had to order "whatever shot you make" from him.......
...and ta da.... Mike made perfect drinks...for both of us.
We luuuuuuuuuuufffed it !
If we didn't have to leave for our next engagement....we would have stayed there for the rest of night for sure.
We will definitely be back....!
Again...friendly bartender ..is just priceless...!
Ive only been here once but from what i could tell its a true locals pub. Â Great place to grab drink, & still has authentic feel to it. Â Real gem for Astoria. Â As most places are beginning to get away from that. Â Though i have heard things can get kinda weird here.
Trivia night on Thurs with chance to win cash with 10 entry fee. If bartender likes you, you get your 3rd drink for FREE. Â
Place has Darts and Golden Tee, which are must haves for any local pub. Â Very reasonable prices. Â They also allow you to bring in food from outside, which is nice touch.
Real laid back spot, with chill crowd. Â Nice tv's spaced around the bar. Â No pretentious bullshit goin on in here.
Something magical is happening here. Â It's your every day bar, but for some reason it's so much better.
It's affordable, the bartenders are terrific, and the crowd is lively, without being too crowdy (you know what I mean). Â It's just fun. Â Plain and simple. Â (Don't be a dummy and order anything crazy here - beer and straightforward mixed drinks are what they do best).
Best place to grab a drink in Astoria! We stumbled on is place while on vacation last year and knew we had to make a return trip. What can I say about this place that hasn't already been said. Trivia night on Thursdays, cheap drinks everyday and amazing service to everyone, all the time.
This place has 2 dart boards complete with scoreboards. Lots of TVs for every sporting events. Awesome place, hands down.
Cheap drinks, 3rd round buybacks, chill crowd, and friendly bartenders who remember your drink order even on a packed Saturday night = one of my favorite places to go out in Astoria. I prefer a good, small Irish pub over a trendy, hip, overpriced place any day. The only thing keeping me from it 5 stars is how crowded it's become. When I first started coming in last summer, it was super busy Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, as expected, but now it's packed every night after about 9 or 10. I'm an 80 year-old man and would like to actually sit down and have a conversation over drinks, but it's gotten very loud and crowded here. Still, I come in whenever it's not too busy because I love the atmosphere so much!
P.S. They accept credit cards, but there's a $15 minimum. So if you're using a card, prepare to get sloshed, because that's four drinks.
This place is greaaaaaat (imagine me saying this in the boss from Office Space's voice). Â Seriously, I LOVE this bar--my Astoria friend told me about it and we hang out there all the time. Â Unpretentious (if a little to the right of me politically), genuinely friendly and hey, buybacks after the 2nd round! Â (The guy below who insists the buybacks are only for Irish customers is crazy--I've gotten them for years.) Â The one and only thing I'd change is that I wish they had *some* kind of kitchen, to prepare even just a few items. Â But what can you do? Â I would give them a 4.5 stars because of the no-kitchen but Yelp doesn't have that option--so 5 it is!
PS: Â Mike is an awesome bartender, a real sweetheart.
Went here last night to drop off some donations for the Hurricane relief (which scores them points in my book). Everyone was really cheerful and appreciative that we came bearing gifts. The bar was packed, jukebox was jamming and college football was on the tv. Stuck around for a beer, draft was a little flat and seemed to be that way for my friends as well. The place had a good vibe, quite the mix of characters and fairly priced beers. I think I'll be back and give it another try.
Review Source:There's a saying where I come from. It sums up joy, ebullience and general feelings of pleasure. "Oh, that's a cenz." Some people don't know what this means. Most don't even care. But that doesn't concern me. I know what a cenz is. Cenz is rooted in Italian. I blame my first wife (that's not all I blame her for. You can take that to the bank). To her - yes, she'll remain nameless - "cent'anni" was the phrase. 100 years. A wish, a hope on birthdays & celebrations. Along with pals of mine, we slowly butchered her native tongue.
And after years of linguistic abuse, cenz was born. A cenz is a mitzvah. If you stop by the Irish Rover, a cenz you will find.
Trivia Nights, Buy backs, Sports to keep the boys busy while the girls chat, a juke box and a clean and fun atmosphere. This place is always packed for a reason! The bartenders are always nice and the patrons are good people, not one jerk i have spotted :)
There is also a chubby chicken across the street for the after bar munchies!
This is a reliable and unpretentious neighborhood pub that  I like best for a few  drinks after work. Contrary to what a few of the negative reviews have stated, the bartenders have always bought my third drink, and I am not Irish or a lifelong resident of Astoria. The bartenders are cool and approachable if you want to go in and talk shit with someone while you have a beer. Conversely, if you prefer to stare into the bottom of your glass and ponder all of your bad decisions, the staff will let you do that as well. So it's a versatile environment, depending on your mood. While I do enjoy this bar overall I rarely find reason to stay longer than an hour. Maybe if they had a kitchen it would be a bit more inviting.
Review Source:A truly local bar... for those that live five or so blocks within the bar... Haha! This place cannot be found unless you live right there-- it is not close to other bars. However it has a very chill vibe, and the drinks are dirt cheap. I believe the "special" (for the locals) is buy two, get the third drink free. And each drink is $5... Very neat "old" looking TV's that play sports game-- making the current game seem like a game from the sixties... I would go back with some close friends...
Review Source:This place is solid. Here's why:
1. It's an "old man" bar, but really nice, like where your classy grandpa would have a pint and kill some time.
2. Friendly bartenders. I called to ask if they were showing a particular game one afternoon and I was told they were. A few minutes later, the bartender CALLED ME BACK to say she made a mistake and they couldn't find the game. Thought that was nice.
3. Authentic atmosphere, with a lot of characters: English, Irish and Scottish, in addition to locals.
4. I just noticed this today, the bathrooms are GLEAMING. CLEAN. WOW.
**DISCLAIMER** For "football" fans like me, be aware that (I'm pretty sure) this is a LIVERPOOL pub. If that makes a difference to you.
This place is pretty solid. And I like that they have Anchor Steam on tap, but I've never had an amazing time here.
I think there are several reasons why this place is just OK. The bartenders are generally attentive, there is a dart board in the back, and it's just a nice place to chill out in a decently lively bar. But it's like a neighborhood bar. And I live in the neighborhood, but I don't think about coming to this place for a drink unfortunately.
The last time I was there I was put off by the accusation I ordered something else over my actual order and was given a pretty unfriendly stare for it. I know I ordered correctly because I was completely sober, but that's not how he saw it!.. especially since he already poured it.
BTW, I've never gotten a buyback from this place. So, maybe it's for the regulars?
I came here with a friend last night and felt the wrath of the evening until about 2 pm today (thank you, Chipotle, for curing me). Â Despite todays sentiments, I love this bar. Â Let me count the ways:
1. Fantastic, friendly bartender who remembers orders and actually wants to get to know his customers
2. Cheap drinks ($10 for an Absolute and soda and a Magners)
3. Third drink is FREE! I didn't even know buybacks still existed -- I thought they went extinct years before I turned 21
4. Fun, hexagonal tables that allow for good conversations with groups of friends
5. Jukebox playing great selections
6. Ample TV's for your sports-viewing pleasure
6. Darts and Buck Hunter (okay, I really don't care about Buck Hunter, but some might)
7. You're allowed to bring in/order in food
8. Decent bathrooms
9. Doesn't have that stuffy, old-men-sit-here-all-day sort of feeling that a lot of local bars do
10. Good lighting (ambiance is key)
Need I say more?
I was visiting some friends in New York who wanted to hit up the Astoria Skate Park over the weekend. Not being much of a skater myself I decided to wander the neighborhood and see if I could find a bar to catch some football.
The Irish Rover was highly recommended on Yelp!, and I can see why. It had a bunch of TVs for watching sports, a good selection of beer and liquor, and what seemed to be a dedicated group of neighborhood folks hanging out watching the Jets (among others).
It definitely seems like it's got a comfortable - even cozy - neighborhood vibe. A little small compared to a normal suburban sports bar, but about the same size or even larger than hipster bars in Manhattan or Williamsburg. I only had one beer and then left, so I'm not sure about the availability or quality of any food.
While I'm not sure if I'll ever find myself in Astoria again, I know if I do at least there's a good place for me to go watch sporting events.
(oh yeah, and Yankees Suck!)
Honestly, I'm not over impressed by this place: Â sure, it's nice and all, clean, whatever. Â Not filled with douches like a lot of bars are, so that's nice. Â But I go to a bar to drink, and I'm not overly impressed with their selection of drinks. Â Admittedly, I didn't take inventory of their liquors, but I only saw 2-3 of each kind of liquor, and maybe 5-7 standard beers on tap--maybe more, I don't remember.
But, it does have some nice things going for it: its got a fairly relaxing atmosphere, a TV or two, clean bathrooms, blah blah blah. Â
But then you meet and talk to the bartenders, and you're like "oh hell to the yeah!" Â Then you get your third drink on the house and you're like "oh fuck yes!!" Â Then you're walking out with a buzz and a small bar bill and you're like "I'm getting my ass back here more often." Â Definitely a case of people over pints here, and sometimes, particularly in a bar with no gimmick, that's exactly what you need.
INT - IRISH ROVER - DAY
In a dimly lit bar, BARTENDER slowly walks over to PAUL D and GIAC K. He looks like he has some bad news.
Bartender: Guys, I've got some bad news...
Paul and Giac look at each other, then at the bartender, readying themselves for the worst.
Paul: Yeah?
Bartender: The...third drink is on the house.
I've long professed a love for "Old Man Bars," or bars that resemble Moe's Tavern, yet have rarely encountered any, or encountered any where I didn't have a legitimate chance of getting the old fork in the eye. Irish Rover is a simple, no-bullshit bar that's made for casual hangout, casual drinking, casual sports watching, and casual drinking alone--George Thoroghgood style. This is the perfect place for the friends who you're  able to enjoy some (relative) silence with.
For a Friday night I would've expected this place to be more busy, there was only a dozen people or so. Â
This is the bar I would want to come to after working all day, Â Its chill, clean, and a nice place to relax. Â And what's not to love about reasonably priced beers with buy backs?
Irish Rover is a pretty chill irish pub.
Dart boards, several tvs tuned to sports. Its a little loud (suck it up, its a pub) and there is no food served here (grab some cart or tacos a few blocks down).
The crowd was actually rather diverse. I feel like the youngsters moving into astoria now know of the place but people across all age groups were having a good time and intermingling.
But it is still a pretty nice place.
They have a pretty great buy back policy (if you know about the policy), but 2 get the 3rd free. For $6 for a black and tan (mixed by the bartender) I'm pretty happy about the pricing. So come, grab your drinks in threes and have a nice brew while watching the knicks, nets and mets suck.
For some reason, I keep reading this place as Irish Rogue. Â Why? I don't have a clue. Â But that's not important. Â What is important is that this is a good, solid bar. Â Although the Guinness I tasted couldn't match the ones from my favorite neighborhood joint, the cleanliness, efficiency, and warm atmosphere of the bartenders made this place a good find. Â The drinks weren't expensive (avg. $5/beer) and they made decent cocktails too. Â For a Thursday evening, it wasn't very busy which was good because we were able to play a few rounds of darts and Buck Hunter (both of which I am awful at).
So bottom line...if you're in the area, this is a good drinking joint.  Especially if you live nearby because this was  good find.
Maybe I just had a particularly bad experience but... I shan't be coming back.
The beer selection is entirely negligent, the guy who was their bartender-announced regular spent my entire time there drunkenly "conversing" with my 3 female friends and I (and by "conversing" I mean drunkenly spitting and mumbling in our faces, and touching us in ways we'd not granted permission to, and repeatedly asking why if we were single, etc.). I was even told by multiple patrons (who are regulars themselves) that this guy is there most nights in that condition, and they are humored by it.
Again, maybe I chose a bad night, but I felt pretty uncomfortable the whole time. I didn't appreciate the vibe of the place even with this guy out of the equation.
It's a place to go if you want to drink standard pilsner and watch a football game. If you want to have good beer with friends, good conversation, and not be hit on by self-entitled strangers, try another spot.
Well I couldn't believe my luck when I moved to Astoria. This place is around 1 block from my apartment and is everything an Irish pub should be. Bartenders are friendly (and actually Irish), buy backs on the 3rd drink, plenty TVs and a decent jukebox.
They always seems to have the temperature just right as well. I'm Scottish so was delighted to see a good selection of whiskys and well as beer on tap. Everyone is friendly and they show the soccer on weekends as well as baseball, football etc!
Top place for a neighborhood bar!
The BEST bar, PERIOD.
Maria, our bartender, was amazing, attentive, and fun. I went there with a character of a coworker (who looks and acts exactly like Samuel L. Jackson). He had never had a Guinness in his life. Needlesstosay, we had 18 pints of Guinness that afternoon. I felt bad for him, every pint of Guinness from here on out would be a letdown because this is as good as it gets. We would be around halfway done with our current pint when she would start pouring our next one. No one in the entire bar was ever waiting on a drink.
Samuel started ragging on Maria about her "watered-down drinks." Baaaaad move for our livers and overall well-being. This provoked her to give us 3 free rounds of Jamison shots, claiming, "if you don't leave here drunk, I'm not doing my job," in a cute Irish accent. Ugh, I fell in love with another foreign bartender.
Cheap, cheap, cheap. I highly recommend ordering out to Rizzo's pizza, which was an perfect complement to the drinks.
This is the kind of place I would travel well out of my way for. Heck, I would make all my friends hike here too. This is the kind of place that makes me consider living in this neighborhood.
Confirmed- it really is that good.
No offense to the people who are into this place but there is absolutely nothing special about it. I live around the corner from an Irish pub that is almost identical to this one, and you don't see me raving about it and giving it 5 stars just because it exists and you're too lazy to go to Manhattan.
I ended up at the Irish Rover over the weekend because the beer garden was having some kind of event with a $10 cover. I used my Yelp iPhone App and this place got such crazy good reviews that I figured it'd be worth a try.
It is just a regular bar on a street with absolutely nothing on it. Beers are reasonable at $4.50 or $5 a pint but I wouldn't go on and on about how cheap it is. There were plenty of tables, the bathroom was clean, and the bartender was nice. Darts and huge TV screens. But really only worth it for people who live in a 3 block vicinity and not at all worth a schlep from another borough. I was embarrassed (though able to blame it on Yelpers!!) because I had friends coming to Astoria from Manhattan and Brooklyn and this was not anything special.
So let's try for some more realistic star ratings, shall we?
I have to thank my fair Yelpers for helping me find this place. Â I had no idea it existed until I searched "cheap bars in Astoria". Â Irish Rover popped up and after reading the fabulous reviews, I knew I had to make the trek over there.
I went on a Thursday night with two of my girlfriends, expecting a diverse crowd and cheap drinks. Â I was pleasantly surprised by the inside of the bar...it was warm, inviting, and "airy". Â The juke box was humming in the back and small groups were huddle together at their respective tables. Â It was pretty empty so we found seats quite easily.
The bartender was incredibly nice and the drinks were suppperrrrr cheap. Â The buy-back every third drink? Â Absolutely amazing. Â I've never even heard of that, especially in an NYC bar. Â Way to go, Irish Rover!
I hope to go on a Friday or Saturday night next time so I can see a bigger crowd. Â This bar is the perfect place for a 'chill' night with your friends...or a perfect place to get really drunk, really cheaply. Â Whatever suits your fancy.
This is a great little neighborhood bar just around the corner from my buddy's new place. Â I'm proud of myself for being the first one to spot it while helping him move.
The inexpensive drinks were a welcome relief to the mortgage payments I was dropping in Manhattan. Â The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly. Â
It also happens to be in one of the coolest neighborhoods I've been to.
Once, when I went here, there was a rugby team celebrating a win. Another time when I went here, I poured $5 into the jukebox and went to town. This other time, there was a one-man band who was INCREDIBLE (still trying to figure out what his name was.) And once? My friends and I stumbled in at 2am on New Years to the most interesting mix of drunk people I've ever seen in my entire life, and it seemed like every person in there was having the time of their lives.
This is by far, my favorite bar in Astoria, and it should be yours too.
