Yes the food is delicious, but way over priced.
I went here with a group of 6 (7 total) for my cousins birthday so we had a pre-fix menu - which I hear is the norm for weekend nights. This included a shared appetizer, your choice of entree, and sample desserts. The appetizers included empanadas, plantains with different toppings, calamari, chicharron (that's fried up little chunks for my non-hispanics) of pork and chicken and some other thing. It was really good, and we all had enough. The entrees of course were very big, and they actually had a food check. Yup, just like coat check they will hold your food if you want to spend the night dancing. We took advantage of this and were still eating Paella two days later. The desserts were all flan - regular, chocolate and coconut - and tres leches. I am actually not a fan of flan, at all. Rare for a Dominican but i'm not for soggy cake. The coconut flan was delicious though!
But then came the check. It was the cousin's birthday so he didn't have to pay which left the rest of us paying roughly $85 each with tax and added tip. They already take 20% with large parties but my people were feeling generous. Also, we all ordered at least one drink and those were about $10-15 each.
Service was great, and the food was excellent but I am in no rush to ever dine here again. It was not an $85 meal.
We also hung out upstairs for a little while but the music was just okay and we weren't all having a great time so we left early.
I visited Don Coqui last week with some friends for drinks then dining. We sat at the bar just in time for happy hour for the 2 for 1 special. The drinks were delicious, the bar area was very small, we had 5 people and it was about the max that the first wave of seats could fit, maybe one or two on the ends. We then sat down for dinner, our server was confident, he should be, he was charming, funny and knew the menu to a T. The portions were humongous, you could have left overs for days! I ordered the salmon, it was a bit overcooked that is the only reason why I didn't leave 5 stars! The chef came over to us and made sure everything was cool, it was. The after dinner complimentary shot was amazing and  an incentive to go back and bring more friends to our neighborhood restaurant! Also be sure to check in on foursquare as you will receive your choice of sangria, beer or a glass of wine:)
