Yes the food is delicious, but way over priced.
I went here with a group of 6 (7 total) for my cousins birthday so we had a pre-fix menu - which I hear is the norm for weekend nights. This included a shared appetizer, your choice of entree, and sample desserts. The appetizers included empanadas, plantains with different toppings, calamari, chicharron (that's fried up little chunks for my non-hispanics) of pork and chicken and some other thing. It was really good, and we all had enough. The entrees of course were very big, and they actually had a food check. Yup, just like coat check they will hold your food if you want to spend the night dancing. We took advantage of this and were still eating Paella two days later. The desserts were all flan - regular, chocolate and coconut - and tres leches. I am actually not a fan of flan, at all. Rare for a Dominican but i'm not for soggy cake. The coconut flan was delicious though!
But then came the check. It was the cousin's birthday so he didn't have to pay which left the rest of us paying roughly $85 each with tax and added tip. They already take 20% with large parties but my people were feeling generous. Also, we all ordered at least one drink and those were about $10-15 each.
Service was great, and the food was excellent but I am in no rush to ever dine here again. It was not an $85 meal.
We also hung out upstairs for a little while but the music was just okay and we weren't all having a great time so we left early.
I visited Don Coqui last week with some friends for drinks then dining. We sat at the bar just in time for happy hour for the 2 for 1 special. The drinks were delicious, the bar area was very small, we had 5 people and it was about the max that the first wave of seats could fit, maybe one or two on the ends. We then sat down for dinner, our server was confident, he should be, he was charming, funny and knew the menu to a T. The portions were humongous, you could have left overs for days! I ordered the salmon, it was a bit overcooked that is the only reason why I didn't leave 5 stars! The chef came over to us and made sure everything was cool, it was. The after dinner complimentary shot was amazing and  an incentive to go back and bring more friends to our neighborhood restaurant! Also be sure to check in on foursquare as you will receive your choice of sangria, beer or a glass of wine:)
Review Source:What does the abbreviation DCiQ2NB mean? I'll give you a sec. Ok, time's up. It stands for, DON COQUI IN QUEENS 2NIGHT, B****. (The B stands for BESTIE by the way). That's the text I send out when the weeknd comes around. This is the original DC and IMO def the best one as well. Always a good time and never a cover.
The lighting inside and the decor are on point! I really enjoy coming to this place, like for real. Anyone can come through because like the DJ said, everyone speaks Spanish when you're at Don Coqui!!! *THEN THE BEAT DROPS*
1. EXPENSIVE as hell
2. food tasted BAD
3. a very large amount of portions for food
4. long wait time
5. they play the same music over and over in a loop
6. the only thing nice about this place was it looking clean and the decor
Note: i only went to the restaurant side, not the lounge area.
I came here with Justin Y. for a friend's birthday dinner, and wow, it is a FANTASTIC place to have a birthday dinner. Classy (really great décor, and it's flexible enough for you to dress up or down as you like), generous (free shots for EVERYONE, $25 off for the birthday boy - need to show ID though, foursquare deals for free drinks), and reeeally great value. Seriously marvelous.
I am docking a star though because a) the lighting is horrid for pictures (okay, my fault - I need to learn how to use my camera better), b) the $10 splitting charge in conjunction with unreasonably huge portions, and c) it is just a tiny bit too far for me to frequent. If you are perfectly happy taking home leftovers and you live within 40 minutes of Don Coqui, you should DEFINITELY check it out. And frequent it because there is no reason why you would not. I live on the other end of the N line, so ... probably not coming back unless another friend has a birthday party.
The ambiance is perfect for what I like best - hanging out, lounging, and conversing without having to scream over the music. I don't recall if there was any music, but it was quiet enough for us to talk comfortably (but not so quiet that we felt awkward speaking). The lounge area (not the restaurant area) is really comfortable and excellent for drinks, and I felt mature and classy sitting there. (: (Because I'm usually not. Just kidding). There's a pink glow on everything, which may or may not be disconcerting; your food will not look quite as appetizing as it might if you use flash photography (at which point you'd realize that your food might have a smattering array of lovely colors instead of just having a neon pink cast). Everyone else will look a little pinkish as well, but don't worry, it's not permanent.
The prices are higher than at the places I usually frequent, but you quickly realize that it is an incredible deal for the amount that you get. Justin Y.'s roast pork was literally a solid chunk of meat the size of his large head. I've never seen a chunk of meat so large. Okay don't think anything dirty, now. There was some bone, but negligible compared to the amount of meat. And it was actually really, really good quality meat, too. I had a seafood paella, which had a great selection of well-cooked seafoods, and the birthday boy had a mofongo, which I've never had. Plaintains and pork - yumm. That was arguably better than the roast pork, but seriously, both were incredible. I don't know what everyone else at the table ordered, but we definitely spent a few minutes simply exclaiming over how surprisingly large the portions were and how delicious everything was.
At the end of our meal, the servers came around with free shots of coconut, cinnamon, (insert other things that you'd imagine would be really delicious), and rum. They weren't very high in alcohol content and they were absolutely delicious. Very pleasant surprise.
Overall, Don Coqui pairs a phenomenal venue with giant, delicious portions of food. I strongly recommend against trying to eat your entire meal in one sitting; please, just take it home.
We had a reservation for 6 pm for a party of 6. Â We were celebrating my daughter's 17th Birthday. Â Where do I begin - we had a the party menu - from appetizers to main course and desserts were delicious and the portions enormous. Â Our waiter Eduardo, was professional, accommodating and funny. Â Chef Jack, the Executive Chef, was out and about greeting patrons and stopped by our table to chat and take pictures with us. Â The music played in the restaurant was the perfect level. Â It was a lovely evening out with family. Â Thank you Eduardo and Chef Jack for making it a memorable night for my daughter. Â A++++
Review Source:wow, such an authentic vibe and delicious food! you really feel like you're eating on the island dining here. The servers are attentive (but do become less so once the crowd starts rolling in later in the evening), and they're very knowledgeable of all the courses. The only gripe I have was that the drinks are a bit weak, but they do fix them if you ask.
Review Source:Came here twice. First time for drinks and party on a friday night. Loved it so much i dragged my friends back this wknd (sat) to eat there and party. So, i was really disappointed this last time i went. I ordered the Don Coqui appy platter. I did care for alot of things. Wasnt soooo tasty. Had better. Too much fried stuff. The waiter was great. Very attentive. Â Fyi, they added the 20% tip in for our group of 6. The drinks were very good, but expensive. My other friends tried the beef mofongo. They liked it. Now, getting to the end of dinner......there was a huge line to get into the club that we could visibly see from our table. After we paid they made us get up follow this bouncer OUTSIDE the restaurant just to get back in the club part and then we had to supposedly show ID's again(which we never did, cause i wasn't having it). Then, the bouncer at the door was giving us a hard time about bringing in our alcoholic drinks that we paid for(but couldn't finish) into the club!! Are they crazy. I just spent $300+ for u to tell me I have to get rid of my drink. Not good. That was so inconvenient. Needless to say though, i got over it cause if you come here to party and dance, you have found the right place. Friday nights are better. End of story, i will never eat here again. Food wasn't that awesome and that nonsense they pull afterward did not make me look good to the girls i begged to come with me. I rated a 4 just for the party and drinks, but a 2 on the food.
Review Source:Came for the brunch which started today. After sitting down, me and my fiancé were greeted by a friendly waiter who gave us breakfast empanadas and garlic bread for starters. I ordered the Spanish omelette which was very good. Any brunch item you order also gives u the option for a drink which I ordered a mimosa which was refreshing. After we finished our food, our waiter gave us a coconut shot which was the icing of our time there. Definitely will be coming back. If you want to relax and have amazing food, come here!
Review Source:Went there this past Saturday - for a bday dinner with friends, and I must say this place is phenomenal.
Food was awesome, I ordered the churrasco steak with black beans and rice (moro), while my other friends ordered the pernil with rice and gandules (enough for two people), and Paellas.
Also I had one of there signature fish bowl drinks (FYI enough for two people) and it was delicious.
And let's not forget the dance floor, yes folks I said it, after you finish eating this place has a lounge, and great music, old school freestyle, hip hop, Dance, Reggae, Reggae ton, bachata and let's not forget some Merengue and Salsa.
This is one place that I will revisit a few more times :-) Enjoy!
If this is the "shortcut to Puerto Rico," as the proprietors suggest, then I'm gonna stay on the mainland. Premixed martinis sloppily poured from a large jug by a bartender with her breast (full-on areola) hanging out of her too-small outfit; then dinner at tables at the other end of the venue was overpowered by way too loud music drowning out any hope of a decent conversation, and creepily attentive busboys who stood nearly motionless and stared at us while we ate. The currasco was very good, our waters were refilled often, but it was all overpriced and way overdone. On so many levels. This is not the extravagant, memorable night out you hope it might be.
Review Source:So unfortunately I did not get to try the delectable food everyone has talked on yelp and provided mouth watering photos to back it up, but I did get to enjoy the main dining room with the Bar and dance floor with my wheppa! drink
Aesthetically, I admired the details put into the design on the ceiling, the fluorescent lights and the large plush couch booths for large parties.
The crowd was everyone : young, old , black, white, and latin of course so it was a real mixture. People were nice and came to have a good time.
AWESOME STRONG HAPPY MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD DRINKS!
They have specialty drinks in which you should try them, theres one that comes in this huge cup and can last you the night and make you feel nice and dancing on your feet all night long.
No cover charge to get in and free coat check which you must use, no coats allowed in the dining area or lounge.
Nice decor and lightening.
Live loud DJ playing awesome tracks from salsa, merengue, reggaeton, house, top hits and all different types of other music. Dance all night long and have a good time.
The food is really good too and the plates are so big so you def.have food to take home and last you for a couple of days depending what you get.
This place is great for a couples night or night out with the girls!
Lines can get long so try to get there before 10pm.
Sexy grown crowd.
VIP/bottle services.
Now where do I BEGIN with this place? There are so many things about this place that it gets done right. I live only a couple blocks from this place and I can't believe that it's taken this long to discover it! It was my friend's birthday so we had a party of about 10 people come out a little bit early to enjoy the happy hour and then get dinner together.
First of all, the decor. Wow, this place just feels like a European discoteque or something. There are huge glass chandeliers everywhere, giant booths with comfortable couches, and a massive dance floor big enough to fit a hundred people comfortably. There is a clubby feel to the atmosphere, which I liked. I didn't like the weird, neon light lighting though because everything becomes a weird blue or pink tint...
The happy hour special for Wednesday was the 2 for 1 deal on select cocktails. Just to watch out on this one, if you order a drink, they give you two of the same drink right away, so make sure you order with a friend and go halfsies so you don't end up with too many drinks on the table. I had the Coquitini, this guava juice with champagne drink, and another one with tamarind juice. I thought the Coquitini was the best. It was milky and creamy with just the right amount of cinnamon. The other two were good, but I'd definitely stick with the Coquitini. Each one is $11, but with the deal, you get two so I'd def suggest it!
Wow, the dinner is amazing! First off, the foursquare deal! You get a free drink (wine or sangria I believe) when you check in! The sangria was slightly more bitter than I'm used to, but who doesn't like a free drink? The food, omg, is phenomenal. The menu is pretty vast and it's not the cheapest food in the world (ranges from $15-$40), but considering how much food they do give you, their food is a steal! I ordered the Roast Pork on recommendation from my friend and I received a plate of pork that has to be the biggest hunk of meat I've ever seen served at a restaurant! It was quite literally the size of my face (and I have a huge head). I cut out a slice for everyone at the table, and still what was left was the biggest piece of meat I've eaten. It wasn't just quantity though - the pork skin was soft and fatty, while the meat was moist and not at all dry. The combination of the hard and soft meats of the pork, mixed with the excellent seasoning and sauce, made this an unforgettable meal.
My friends ordered many other dishes that were equally ridiculously ginormous and delicious. If you are into large portions, this is the place for you. But be warned, splitting a plate costs an additional $10, so I would recommend just getting your own food and getting a doggy bag. We didn't know, so when they overcharged us, we asked them if they could let us off, and they did! So the least I could do is repay them with a 5 star rating here. It was clearly marked in the menu but we had no idea that it was there, so they were really generous! They also gave us free coquitini shots (wooo!) and free dessert for our birthday boy. It was tres leche cake and it was delicious!
This place is on my radar now and I will not fail to frequent it!
Went here with a big group of friends for a birthday. Â The food was great and the portions you get are a great value - leftovers were delicious. Â The drinks are strong and the staff are professional and friendly. Â Went to the club afterwards and music was a good mix of new and old. Â Crowd was very varied of all ages and nationalities which is a good thing. Â Only negatives was the wait for the table even though we had reservations and the to go bags was not sturdy (all of my friends had their food almost fall while walking to their cars).
Review Source:I got invited out to this place and from standing on the line I was like what kind of party is this? It was just middle-aged men and women but okay (inside it was a mixture of ages, which included a group of 50 year ol ladies but I won't judge)
No cover, free to check in your stuff, the drinks are good (a bit over priced), the music is okay; the selection needs to be varied more; I understand its the "shortcut to Puerto Rico" so there will be Spanish music but a little more variety wouldn't hurt.
Overall, I did have a good time. I can't say I won't come back but it won't be back anytime soon.
I can't exactly decide on this place. I think the food and the overall experience only earns them 3 stars, but the portions are SO FREAKING HUGE that you can't not appreciate it and must give them an extra 1 for generosity.
The place is huge, the drinks are strong, and the food IS good. But I did feel rushed and I thought the make-shift dining area with the clubby, blue-tinged overhead lighting was weird and definitely not flattering to the food much. The space was also very big but somehow still cramped. That said though, my paella was really good! Although I could've done without the 2 chicken thighs in it, the rest was loaded with lobster, shrimp, calamari, soo much seafood. I'm pretty sure I had enough left over after dinner to eat a complete second meal.
If I could give them NO stars I would. My mother reserved a table at this place because she had heard good things. She had friends coming from all over to celebrate her 50th. What a huge disaster. First they did not have the table so we had to wait then they said we could sit at a table reserved for bottles since we had to wait. This wait was 2H HOURS for a reservation we had made. WORSE she had 2 pregnant friends who came out to celebrate and have fun. THEN they kicked us out of where we where sitting but had no where else to put us while we waited. I mean how awful do you have to be to make two pregnant women wait to be seated. The women in red have no feelings and told us that was not her problem and we could try and find somewhere else. Even thought they are connected they are not managed together. Â Some of there friends decided to leave. Then one of my mom's pregnant friends was so hungry she went into the bar to eat.
When we finally where seated for her reserved party of 20 Â they sat us in 2 separate round tables! We were not even able to converse with each other since we where in different tables. Then my mother pregnant friend stood just to stay and chat but did not want to eat. When my mother informed the waiter of this he said "WELL IF SHE IS SITTING HERE SHE HAS TO PAY" My mother already losing her patience and feeling guilty of choosing this place agreed to pay for an empty meal. Then the food was not anything special but very big and very overpriced. The giant buffet appetizer and awful desserts are not worth it. The food I found to be gross and bland. We were rushed through our food. Then when it came to desserts we were all eating and trying to have a good time but they were already trying to clear our plates. WHAT THE HELL and they kept on hovering waiting to clear and move us out. My mothers friends where leaving and others where staying. they just could not take the awful environment anymore. Our table had pretty much left but the other table was still full and had ordered drinks and they were trying to move us. To the point they had a skinny dude telling us someone else wanted the table. WTF we are still sitting here eating and drinking. Having enough I left my table and my mother was outside so they could clean it. The other table still drinking their huge expensive drinks were being asked to move. I ended up just standing there since I could not sit down and the lounge was packed and I had food in my hands. The rude bouncer tells me I have to move but there is no were to move. Then he says move there which is just a step away but full of people. I finally move and said "are you happy" then he asks me why I have an attitude.
My mother had intended to stay but I could not. This place is rude and has very poor management. I will NEVER go here again and I will tell people not too ever go there. They ruined my mothers birthday and worse made her feel guilty because she had invited friends to come. she paid for an overpriced dinner that NO ONE enjoyed. We will go to the Copacabana next year. Their food is delicious and inventive and they actually play Spanish music.
BEWARE coming here since as you can see in the reviews you may or may not have a good time. Bottom line there are so many other BETTER and more CONSISTENT locations to go to that I would NOT take a gamble in this location on a special day.
This review is for the restaurant, not the club. When I was told we were coming here for my mother in law's birthday, I was a bit annoyed cause she could have certainly picked a better restaurant in my opinion. BUT I was pleasantly surprised I must say. Came on a Sunday evening and it wasn't packed at all so it was a bit quiet, which is good with me when I'm having dinner. The place is nice, the subtle music in the background was nice, the staff was very friendly and the food was yummy!!! I wasn't impressed with the sangria at all but was impressed with the food. We ordered the paella, skirt steak and the pernil and everything was delicious - wow! It was overall a very pleasant experience. Will definitely be back again for dinner!
Review Source:I've been here twice now.
1st visit: I went on date here last year and had a nice time. I love the dreamy ambience in the dining area the lighting is a soft purple against white walls and table settings in a round shaped room. Tons of space to maneuver to your table. The food would be a 3/5 to me. I ordered something simple arroz con pollo. But my rice was very dry, chicken was bland. However, my date ordered a burger and plantains. The plantains were good.
2nd visit: I brought a friend to Don Coqui after we chilled at Sofrito's bar (In Manhattan) and were looking for a little bit more room to dance. A friend always tells me how fun their  Salsa night is so I decided to go check it out. We skipped waiting in line and the cold and rolled in for someone's bday. There was no cover and free coat check.
We walked into a full house. Tons of people having a great time. The trip to the bar was quick. It really packed. My friend ordered a glass of red wine and someone bumped into her and it spilled on my creme colored silk blouse. Gotta love it. We went to the bathroom to get it out and surprisingly the stain came out with generous dabs of cold water soaked paper towels. The night was saved and we returned to the dance floor for an amazing time.
Service 4/5 The bar doesn't allow under $30 tabs to be opened on cards. So the bartender threw some looks and attitude around when my pal said all she had was her card. The bartender accepted her card but not nicely. So yeah for that I'm deducting.
Music 4/5 Top 40 and salsa music but i thought the music could be blended better.
Decor: Great flow from dining into dance area being a huge space to just dance.
Price: 4/5 Cover free, Coat check free, Drink bar tab 30+ no thanks
Overall: great time!
Celebrated my 25th birthday here last Friday and we had a BLAST!! Â Loved the personalized menu that comes with your meal, and that the appetizers and desert are served family style. Â Also very flexible and for your main course, substitutions are allowed which makes it easy to try new menu items.
I will say though - they made us wait a good 30-40 minutes for our 9PM reservation which annoyed me and my group of 20 people. Â I understand that we were a large group, but when you make a reservation, I expected the table to be ready since we all arrived on time. Â I also was not a fan of the fact that they rushed us all to get up and pay since they wanted to use the tables and get them cleaned up for the dance club. Â Lose 1 star for those two items.
Great music otherwise, love the vibe here. Â Quick tip - order the pernil and receive a massive COW for your meal. You'll have food for the week. Â :-)
My first time here and maybe my last. I ordered the Don Coqui pallella snd it was more of a bowl of yellow rice than anything. The clams were fishy the calamari was like chewing on rubber bands and the "lobster" was lackluster. Â The chorizo was spicer than I usually like but the shrimp were good. My mother had the churassco and it was too salty either the seasoning or chimichurri sauce I couldn't quite tell. Â
For desert we ordered the tres leches which was a huge portion and yummy.
The service was good and thank goodness for my Malbec.
I'm giving this place two star, because there food taste great, everything else sucked. I've went to Don Coqui for both the night life and for a birthday dinner on the same week. Here goes:
Weds- Birthday dinner:
The waiter was a little iffy at first with out group of six 20-something year olds. You shouldn't judge based on age, I have no problem spending money where it is deserved. They gave us the "dinner deal" menu which was $39/49 (can't rem) a person for "appetizer, entree, and desert", the waiter never asked us if we wanted this deal. I already came knowing exactly what I wanted: pernil. When i realized he only gave us this piece of paper I knew I had to ask for the regular menu. He seemed hesitant but gave it to us. I ordered pernil, and bc I knew how large they serve, Â shared it with my sister. If you dont order you own plate, you're charged $10, so we decided to order an appetizer for $6 since we knew we would want to munch on something else. Â After we placed our orders we waited, we bought some drinks and chilled. It was a short short wait before two plates of appetizers came out and I was puzzled. No one had ordered this. $30 for the appetizers -- why? Bc as the waiter stated "you didnt tell me you wanted the regular menu, so the cooks were already making your appetizer for the dinner deal" -_-I wasn't happy but I let it go. There were six of us, we can manage five extra bucks each. Our food came quickly, I was very impressed. The food was served beautifully, the pernil was HUGE and it came with delicious yellow rice and some gross potato salad that DOES NOT go with the dish at all. Anyways, I had ordered myself and my sister a cran-vodka ($15) and my bff who was celebrating his bday a long island ice tea ($15). Our waiter ended up giving up a shot of Coquito on the house (may I mention once he saw I wasn't cheap, he started coming up to us more often and was much sweeter). Â Our bill came out to almost $300. We were charged $40 as a service charge - tip i assume, plusssss they charged up for the bday boys flan that they brought out to sing him happy birthday (we never asked for this!) OH I FORGOT TO MENTION: the entire time, the manager watched us constantly, like we were going to rob the place. He was so unhappy, he looked so grumpy and depressed with life. Seriously, there is an image you are trying to portray here, and his stank face was killing it. I ended up spending a little over $100 on my sister and I. Yeah, I didn't expect to spend that much, nor do I think that it was WORTH spending that much. Oh and please keep in the mind the drinks are small, notttt $15 worth at all.
Place is very nice and welcoming. The music is great. Makes you want to dance while your eating but the lighting was a bit dim for my old aunt. I was celebrating a birthday and we brought a cake and without telling us they charged us $15 bucks for cutting the cake. Seriously if they had let me know that before hand I would have brought my own knife. $15 bucks to cut a cake that I brought in and our bill was well over $300. They should have serviced it to us. Â The valet kid literally took the meter I was going to park my car and said I couldn't park there bc its reserved. Being that it was a bit chilly I valet my car for $5. When dinner was over the kid parks the car at the meter I already had my car half way parked into. :0/ no tip I'm sorry. He just handed me my keys there was no need for him to pull my car out.
The service was alright. It wasn't a busy night  (Monday night) and it took a while to get the waiters attention. The food was delish yet expensive! Not a place you want to go for casual dinner. Only special occasions. Sangria is strong and tasty.
I'm only giving this place 3 starts bc of the lighting, the wait for our waiter & the over charge for cutting the cake.
the food was great. no coqui given to us that night.
as for NIGHT LIFE,
I LOVE IT. the wait for entracne is bonkers after midnight but its free admission so cant complain. the music is great, they play a mix of music -not just spanish music all night. the crowd is a mix of nationalities.
drinks are expenive. $10 for a beer
$13-15 for a alcoholic beverage
:0( averages out since the admission was free.
coat check is free as well.
Mixed reviews but bad weighs more than good:
1. when this place first opened in astoria i traditionally brought my child there for dinner dates with me. at first everyone was so accommodating and i thought it was nice service considering the $$$ spent. one day i went there with my little guy and was told there was no tables for us. THE PLACE WAS EMPTY (cafe area). Told us we had to wait for the other person to arrive before we were seated. Again, THE PLACE WAS EMPTY. all staff members you could tell were just a nice face but not educated and lacked common sense. we were forced to eat pizza across the street mind you after the hundreds of dollars ive spent in there and i tip WELL
2. another time it was a birthday party for 4. one person in my party had gotten stuck in traffic so they though it was just unearthly to seat the 3 people. their STUPID rules make no sense. the staff are just given orders by the uppers who in my personal opinion and know are just people (jimmys daughters) who were inherited with this restaurant but know nothing about hospitality management nor business. the bill came out to a couple of hundred dollars .... for 4 PEOPLE. no drink specials or discounts for disgruntled patrons.
very unaccomodating
rushed service
they watch you when you eat
its very loud
complimentary coquito shots seem to go to those who are favored
their rules are moronic
THIS IS A PLACE FOR PEOPLE WHO THINK THEY ARE CLASSY BUT ARE NOT
JIMMY STICK TO THE CLUB PARTY AND SELL YOUR RESTAURANT TO A GOOD BUSINESS PERSON

THE FOOD IS DELICIOUS THOUGH AND RICE IS LIKE MY OWN BUT IT IS SUCH A SHAME THE CHEFS ARE RUINED BY SUCH SERVICE AND MANAGEMENT

Upon arriving I paid $10 for valet- sweet because parking sucks around there.
I came here to celebrate a bday party and had a wonderful time. The music was great and the bar wasn't annoying to get to. The place had one room that was super packed, shoulder to shoulder dancing while another area was a little less crowded for my friends and I were able to dance, talk to each other, and hit up that bar a few feet away.
Dress code for nightlife: no sneakers, no boots
I was not able to try the food but plan on coming back and noticed people also ordering takeout.
I've come here for dinner before and was not impressed with their food. However, their drinks and dancing are amazing! Their passion fruit mojitos are really good & their tequila shots are always chilled & served with the required salt & lime. The music is good; good variety for a Spanish club. Mostly salsa, merengue & bachata (because after all, the place is called DON COQUI) but they slip a fair amount of other stuff in too.
Overall, an unremarkable place for dinner, but an awesome place for drinks and dancing!
I spent New Years at Don Coqui with my brother and my disabled mother who also required oxygen. Â The manager, Joe, was extremely understanding and accommodating of my situation with her and went above and beyond in making sure she was comfortable and happy. Â I cant say enough about the service. I've been here several times and its always a great experience, but this was more special to me. Â The food was, as always amazing! Â Presentation and flavor is second to none. Â I will always be a repeat customer!
Thank you to the entire staff at Don Coqui and a special thank you to Joe.
Rating this place as a Bar/Lounge/Club, because I have yet to try their food (which I hear is really good!)
I love coming here for a night out dancing! If you are looking for a Spanish Club, this place is definitely worth checking out. There never is a cover to get in, and there is free coat check! The drinks are pricey though!
Come early because this place gets extremely crowded, and the line to get in goes down a block!
Overall, definitely recommend this place to dance the night away!
Ehhhh...
NOTE: This is based soley on the nightlife, not the food.
I'm not a fan of clubs, and this, is one. I went just to support a friend for her birthday. First of all, I walked right in without being asked for ID. So, if you're underage, this is your spot. The place is pretty big and the bar is easily accessible. The thing is, the drinks suck. No liquor in my $12 drink. Maybe the bartenders need to go back to school?
Anyway, crowd is kind of lame. Older folks and lots of Euro trash trying to be "down."
Oh well, I went, I saw, and I broke the hell out.
Now I can see why I don't go to clubs anymore.
Puerto Rican cuisine at its finest!
the food:
portions are huge! The pernil they serve is like a baby pernil that your mom would cook for the family....def a serving for two. The paella and seafood stew are amazing.....also very large servings. Go with a large group and get a pre fixed menu served family style. starters are empanadas, pork rolls, tostones topped with this amazing shrimp mixture. Coconut rice to die for. Dessert is flan, rice pudding, typical amazing puerto rican desserts. food is great, plates are pricey, portions are huge!
the place:
trendy, loud, dim restaurant. 2 bars, flat screens playing music videos....forget trying to have a conversation during dinner after 10 on thurs, fri or sat....those are party nites....i would suggest families go earlier during the week end or on a sunday. on fri and sat, turns into a lounge around 10ish....line forms outside.....12.30ish your not getting in unless your buying a bottle. Nice crowd, fancy dressed trendy people...lol
the service:
the reason for 4 stars and not 5....not much competition out there for them (meaning puerto rican food and great music) and they know this.....long wait for tables (make a reservation). Valet is small and they run out of space quickly (altho there is parking on surrounding blocks). they take a while to bring your food....think they want you to sit there drinking there yummy sangria.....lol.
*also i've had difficuilties making a reservation for a large group at both Don Coqui locations (new rochelle and astoria). try to call as much in advance as possible, you will most likely get a VM and have to wait for a call back.
The prices are HIGH but the portions are huge. So, quick tip share your entrees. This was a good thing to do. Had a good time here up until we had to get the car from the Valet(Parking Systems). So they f*cked up my friends car ignition. Dude tried to start the car with a different car key. This caused the steering wheel to lock, she had to leave the car OVER NIGHT and have it towed the next morning. Take it to the mechanic and wait!!! The guys that parked and ATTEMPTED to start the car didn't EVEN help!! The restaurant manager came and tried to help. So my conclusion:
Share meals
DON'T VALET PARK!
Find the RIGHT day to go, and it is so fkn fun!! (Not saying which... my secret ;)
It'll be crowded, yes, BUT, god is it fun!
Free entry, free coat check, awesome latin music. . .
And occasionally, if you, a beautiful female, get the gall to ask the most astonishingly beautiful woman you will ever lay eyes on to dance after complimenting her, she may excitedly squeal 'Of course!' and you two will dance, laugh, brush off intercepting guys, and she will ask YOU for YOUR number! Â Well, if you are as awesome as me. heh
Don Coqui makes has one of the strongest drinks I have ever had in my life. Their Sexy Island is so strong, that my friend emptied a bottle of water into it to dilute it. Yes!
Second, I was actually surprised at the early mix of songs that were played in the beginning. There was a balance between hip hop and pop which actually a threw me off. After about 30 minutes, it went into full Latin mode lol.
The place is humongous. Â On the other side of it, there is a full fledged restaurant. Â I hear they make great food since a friend of mine just went there 3 times in the past 4 days!! Â I would have to try it some time.
Cheers
Dinner and night out with the girls. Â Don coqui was the place to do it. Â We showed up in time for happy hour, which offered the 2 for 1 deal. Â Drinks weren't that strong, but they tasted good.
For dinner, it was a semi large group of us, so we were forced to order from the party menu. Â It was a pretty good deal though. Â After tax and tip, $50 a person. Â We had family style appetizers and desserts. Â Appetizers had some chicharonnes de pollo , empanadas, calamari, tostones topped with shrimp + pork, and some other stuff. Â Desserts were flan + tres leches cake. Â For entrees, each person was able to choose one dish from a limited selection. Â I got the pernil, and let me tell you - it was a beast of a piece of meat. Â It took me five meals to finish it. Â SOO good too. Â The other girls got steak, and some got the paella. Â The paella was huge too. Â Each came with half a lobster. Â
After dinner, we returned to the bar area for some dancing. Â Apparently, before the DJ shows up, it's strictly Spanish music. Â I wish they played more other stuff, but I understand that it's a Spanish restaurant, so it's all good.
The service here was pretty good, until they asked that we give up our table to accommodate other patrons...
3.5
OVERALL: What is all the fuzz about? Honestly maybe they don't deserve 3 starts but they don't deserve 4 either. It's somewhere in the middle. It was my first time and  maybe I should go back to visit but I was left with mixed feelings on the spot, the customers and the employees.
THE PLACE: It's an actually really nice place, it looks very cleans and proper. However it is sooo LOUD! I mean it's like a lunch room kind of loud. Way to many people go there for birthday dinners. I swear I must have heard a Happy Birthday song about 8 times (for real). Apart from when they were clapping all you heard was loud customers screaming and laughing it gave me a headache.
THE FOOD:
Was actually really good, this is why I considered giving them a 3.5 because what ruined my experience was the loudness and the service.
I ordered seafood forgot the name but it was pretty good, everything is pretty big I don't know what it is about Spanish restaurant but they love to give a lot of food. My friend ordered the steak sandwich and it was in like on a Subway FOOTLONG. But the meat was delicious.
SERVICE:
Very annoying, they will remove your plate from the table as you're reaching for a bite. It's very unprofessional and rude, the second you put your fork down they are ready to get you out of there. You'd think you'd let me sit and enjoy my food or finish drinking my drink, but no that is not the case. THIS IS WHERE THEY LOST POINTS. After my meal was took away from me, I was finishing my Mojito which was amazing, and they actually asked us to get up and told us we couldn't finish our drink. They even sent the anger over, now I understand that it might be busy but the way they handled themselves was very unprofessional. They asked us to take it to the bar after I spent all my money on their food.
They'll be very nice to you until you put your fork down, once you do. It's is bye bye to you.
