Jim's is good. Â i still prefer other places but Jim's will satisfy a craving if i have one, and need a close spot.
that said, i think South street Jim's is a little better than this one. Â i always get spotty customer service/ order taking. Â they have a weird line that unless you know the drill you might get confused. Â especially since every time i have been there, it is pretty empty. many times they get the order confused.
dont stand and look at the menu, just go right up to the cheesesteak window. Â They do put a good amount of meat on the sandwich, which i like since i dont get any veggies on mine.
Decor is nice. retro vibe with art deco feeling.
I've tried Jim's a long time ago and as far as the chain cheesesteak locations go, similar experience. Â
The roll was perfect. Â The meat is chopped which is a good thing. Â Steak was little overcooked and chewy. Â I ordered American cheese which remained cold in the bun. Â I'm more of a melty gristly cheese kind of guy. Â This tasted more like when a sandwich gets cold and the cheese turns hard. Â Just not a good sandwich all around.
The staff was super friendly and fast. Â Very good staff.
I'm a true Philadelphian whose been to a lot of steak places and for me Jim's ranked last of the chain cheesesteaks.
I never could understand in the debate of who makes the best Philly Cheese steaks why Jims on South Street was included other than the fact of its location on South Street. Their other location is in Springfield in Delaware County and today I was in the mood so I thought I would give them another try. Just like South Street, the grillman has a pile of cooked chopped steak and grilled onions sitting there waiting for an order. I ordered a pizza steak with Provolone ( cheese whiz from a can should be outlawed IMO). Â I am highly suspicious of chopped steak as it can hide inferior meat. Not saying Jim's is inferior because it wasnt fatty but it didnt have much taste. The counter help wasnt very friendly or attentive. The order process was confusing as there was no line. In Delco Thunderbird is way better but the best in Philadelphia is Steve's Prince of Steak by far ( no chopped steak, best lean rib eye cut in town, great roll) and then Jim's Roast Pork.
Review Source:My boyfriend is from Long Island but spend his college years at U of D. Â When he would go into Philly, he was introduced to Jim's Steaks which he swears are the best. Â During the Labor Day weekend, we were going to a party in Chinatown and he wanted to swing by Jim's on South Street afterwards. Â Being super filled after the party we scrapped that plan.
For a compromise I took him to the Delco outpost of Jim's Steaks hoping that it would satisfy his need. Â The food itself was delicious. Â How could meat with wiz and fried onions be anything but? Â I also went for the black and white shake which was perfect. Â My arteries didn't feel that great but its not everyday. Â
The cleanliness of the restaurant could have been a little better but its a cheesesteak joint; I feel that they all have to have a little grime on them to be good.
Really, we all know this place will never be like the original, or like the South Street location. Â Don't even bother trying to compare. Â
But, last time I decided to give them a try for the heck of it, they made a pretty decent chicken cheesesteak with real chicken chunks, and lots of them. Â I was satisfied. Â
Just don't expect much. Â It's a pretty good cheesesteak. Â It won't change your life.
I'm only in Philly once a year and unfortunately not long enough to go gallivanting around in search of the perfect steak sandwich. Â I guess I was expecting the experience of walking up to a greasy old counter to find an overweight balding man in a cramped steamy room. I was ready to order my "Wiz wit and a side a fries, hot peppers on the side." Â Instead I entered the strip mall to find an establishment refurbished, likely quite recently, despite its origins nearly 75 years prior.
Places to sit, a clean cut staff, they even took credit cards... someone else said they didn't. Â I thought I might be in the wrong place. Â I ordered the sandwich and there it was just as I had imagined it but is a setting that confused me, where was the standing room only counter where I was prepared to fight for elbow space? Â Where was the fat, bald man, Â the steamy room, the grease? Â OK, to be fair the grease was in the sandwich, but fat is where flavor lives. Â The peppers on the side were great, Â I may have eaten 10 of them I may have consumed more.
I feel I would have given Jim''s 3 stars but the location confused me into clicking the 4th star and I can't find a good enough reason to remove it.
Oh yea! Â que cheesy 70's porno music as you're stuffing their huge philly down your mouth-- Bom chicka Bow wow..... it's just that good! Â Greasy perfection. Their fries were crispy and fresh and the milk shakes are super thick but delicious. Â Not to mention we ordered 3 cheese steaks and got an extra one thrown into our bag on accident... we'll take it!
I'd drive an hour and half from Jersey just to have another!
Always get hooked up with extra cheese at this place. Although Geno's is my favorite, this is my boyfriend's favorite so I will represent him here. Not as big as the South Street Jim's, but when I want a Philly cheesesteak I don't really care about atmosphere so much. All about that ooey gooey wiz and fried onions, mmmm.
Review Source:If you need a cheese steak, and you live in Delco, it's a great alternative. Is it Tony Luke's or Geno's? No chance. But you're in Delco, so either drive to 9th and Passyunk or deal with very good but not a 5 star.
They do tend to get backed up, and the service can be a bit rude, but it's still a great Philly cheese steak in the neighborhood. I've also noticed they tend to really let the line back up, then serve everyone at once. I get that it's easier that way, but it can be a pain when you just missed the previous steak that got put on the flat top.
I live in Tampa now, but visit my family in Clifton Heights often. This place is the best I've had in the neighborhood now that the Painted Horse is closed. Def worth a stop when you need your cheese steak fix.
I'm not sure why everyone hates this location... yeah, it's not the original and you don't get the overall ambiance but it's still a good cheesesteak! Yes, they don't use as much meat as they do at the South Street location but I still think it's delicious.
It is a random location in a strip mall but it's good cause it's close to my house! The staff is ok, give or take.
Basically, a cheap version of an AMAZING spot on South Street... I'll take it!
Total Blueballs.
Never been to Jim's on South Street, but I saw that there was one on Baltimore Pike and decided to stop by.
I spent good money on the steak, and got junk.
They cooked it TOO DAMNED FAST. It doesn't take a genius to understand that the faster and hotter you cook and chop a steak, the more it will be tasteless, and soaked with liquid to the point that it soaks the roll and it falls apart.
What was wrong?
Cooked too fast, chopped too soon.
Roll was soaked
Meat was tasteless.
Meat to bread ratio was too high.
Cheese to meat ratio was too low.
This wasn't an issue of ingredients, but operator error.
There was also an absence of lunch specials, although they showed "specials," outside the door that weren't specials but merely pictures (nice touch.)
So disappointed. Never to return. Sorry.
definitely not as great as the south street location, but it satisfies my craving for cheesesteaks when i'm visiting home. Â they open real late, so whenever i get back, it's always an option for a good late night snack. Â i always order with whiz, provolone, grilled onions, and mushrooms... covered in ketchup. Â can't beat the amoroso rolls!
i would've given them 2 stars for the poor service, but during my last visit, they were quite accomodating was i asked if they could make a cheesesteak "deconstructed" for me so i could take it back to boston for my wife. Â they packed it for me, and even saran wrapped the amoroso roll so it wouldn't get stale. Â it travelled quite nicely, but unfortunately after i reheated it, i could barely see or taste any of the whiz. Â i'll have to ask for extra whiz next time i try this.
Just after I landed into Philly INTL, I was picked up and brought to Jim's Steaks. Apparently there had been a mix up with not having had defrosted enough meats, so they were running behind. The man cooking up at the front was really complaining rather intensely and also swearing. It didn't take too terribly long for the food to be ready, and when it was, it was a really good cheesesteak. It was dealing with the staff drama that was an issue, if I was rating solely on what I devoured, there would have been 4 stars.
Review Source:I've been to this location twice within the past 2 months, and I wasn't too thrilled either time. Â My most recent trip was Sunday night. Â I was not impressed at all. Â The cheesesteak was mediocre, and I couldn't even taste the CHEESE in it. Â I love when the cheese gets 'chopped in' to the cheesesteak, so that every bite is full of cheesy goodness. Â I guess this is a place you could hit up if you were really in dire need of a cheesesteak in the suburbs. Â The onion rings are very tasty , as is their dipping sauce. Â I want to try out their hoagies too, they look yummy. Â However, I will not be eating their cheesesteaks again.
Review Source:Greasy, Fatty,Greasy,Fatty....and that's just the people that work there.
This place really stinks. If you must east at Jim's, go to the location on South Street, however, if you go on a weekend, you will wait in a long line filled with tourist.
The locaiton on South St. has way more of a vibe and the steaks there are actually edible.
the first time i had jim's was in philly. Â it was very good and i always liked going back there however, the travel time made it a tad out of my way. Â then jim's opened a location in the suburbs near me. Â it's only about 20 mins from me. Â my brother in law and i are always craving it and go there late at nights. Â they open until 3am on the weekends i think. Â the cheesesteak sandwiches never disappoint us but the people working there is a different story. Â they're ALWAYS cranky and in a pissy mood, not very polite or courteous. Â i've been here countless number of times and never once did i not leave annoyed at the poor customer service! Â
despite the great cheesesteak sandwiches, 2 stars is the best i can give. Â fire your staff and hire better people!!!
Was driving back from Springfield, PA in February around midnight & decided I wanted a cheesesteak while visiting my hometown on a rare occasion. Â Man, was I disappointed! This was only my 3rd visit to this chain in my lifetime. Â I checked out the South Street location about 25 years ago & remembered it being one of coolest places in the city for a late night bite, but damn, how things have changed. Â Looking back it was probably the 'munchies' that made me like this place, but today, not so much. Â Ugh! Â
The problem with my chicken cheese steak? Â It wasn't chopped up as well as I would have liked and the taste was very bland. Â Even the sweet peppers didn't taste right, and how can you mess up sweet peppers?? I should have gone to my #1 favorite place in the Philly area (Leo's Steaks in Folcroft).
I was passing through the Philly area so figured I'd grab a steak and cheese. I got it with Provolone... still haven't worked up the nerve to purposley put cheese whiz on my steak and cheese (or anything for that matter). It was just ok, there are better "authentic philly style" places at home (Northern VA).
Review Source:2 stars is about the best you'll get here. The steaks were about the greasiest I've ever had and could have used a more seasoning, too. Â I would have given it 1 star, but the size of the sandwich seemed pretty good, even if it was only mediocre.
I'm not sure what other steak shops are in the immediate area, but if you're heading down to the Clifton Heights/Collindale area, try Chris's Pizza, Femi's or Pat's Pizzeria. They're all better.
