I have been here twice in recent days and really enjoy the food, atmosphere and service. Â It's lively and festive inside with a nautical theme that is not too corny. Â
We have enjoyed fried shrimp, fried catfish, shrimp jibarito (A+), frog legs, popcorn shrimp, and crab cake. Â Everything was prepared to order and served piping hot. Â The available assortment of sauces (hot, cocktail, mango-habanero, tartar, and chipotle mayo) were all excellent. Â The mayo is my favorite. Â The crab cake was a little tiny but tasty with an excellent presentation.
Only two issues with me, but they are enough to discourage me from going back. Â First, perhaps I'm being too sensitive, but the ventilation inside is sub-optimal. Â The air is thick with aerosolized cooking/frying oil to the point of being uncomfortable. Â Furthermore, after leaving, we felt like we needed a shower and our clothes needed to be discarded. Â Yuck.
Secondly, each time I've been in there was a seemingly abandoned half-drunken bottle of beer on the eating counter. Â Not a great image, especially if you bring children who want to sit at the counter and watch the chefs. Â I would recommend just clearing the counter periodically. Â No biggie to keep things neat and tidy. Â It is a restaurant after all.
I live super-close to this place but never tried it. Â And if I had seen their menu before I went in, I probably would have skipped the place, since almost everything is fried. Â But I was already in the door before I saw the menu. Â So I felt compelled to stay. Â I ended up ordering the one grilled thing I saw -- fish tacos. Â They were AWESOME. Â The grilled mahi had great flavor, the sauces were excellent, fresh lime juice and and fresh veggies. Â I was really impressed. Â I'll definitely be back.
Review Source:On 01-25-13, I ordered 1 pound of jumbo shrimp ($16.00) and some coleslaw and sauces for lunch. Â The bag felt a bit light so I decided to weigh the shrimp. Â I got less than 3/4 lb (11.2 oz) of shrimp.
So I called and they asked me how many shrimp I received. Â There were 12 pcs of the Jumbo Shrimp (11.2 oz). The man on the phone tells me that is what 1 lb of shrimp is. Â So according to Joeys shrimp house, Â 11.2 oz of shrimp is a pound of shrimp.
When you go there be prepared to get shorted on your food.
Shrimp is pretty good but I got screwed out of over 1/4 lb. Â They also forgot the sweet potato fries. Â Shrimp were decent. Â Still hungry.
Drive by this place everyday on my way to work. It looks very fun and festive, the way its decorated from the outside. I decided today would finally be the day that I stopped in and grabbed lunch. The place is very creatively decorated on the inside. Very Nautical/beach themed. Its small, but comfortable. Not in the best part of town, but thats what makes it a hidden gem. We came in around 1130, and there was only 1 other customer there at the time. He got his food as we were ordering, and from the looks of it, we knew we made a good decision coming here.
I got the Shrimp Po Boy, sweet potato fries and a coke, my total came to right under $8-very fairly priced for seafood. A friend of mine got the same thing with hush puppies and another friend got the shrimp jibaritos sandwich. Im not why some of these reviews are saying the people were rude. The guy who took our order was very, very pleasant.
It took about 15 minutes to get our food, but we didn't mind waiting. EVERYTHING was freshly prepared, down to the tomatoes that were diced right before our food was sent out.
As for the food-WOW. Generous, generous portions of shrimp on my po boy. The fries were fresh and crispy, the spicy mayo on the side was the finishing touch. Everyone else's food also looked equally phenomenal. The hush puppies were to die for.
I am already planning my next visit here. Good seafood is hard to come by, especially for a fair price, but this place far exceeded all my expectations.
Will definitely be back soon!
This is the perfect place to go whenever in the mood for delicious fried food...they cook everything upon ordering, very fresh! My fav is their fried mushrooms and the shrimp jibarito. The guys that work there are extremely nice...order ahead if you're in a hurry or just have a drink while you're waiting...
Review Source:Finally had a chance to try this place last night...but I guess what people Ive talked to have had, was the one good thing they make maybe. We tried a variety to get to see what they offer. The Po' Boy was good. The homemade spicy mayo, Great. The shrimp sauce, had the consistency of JELLO...thats bad, when you have to push in a shrimp just to get some sauce on it. Which brings me to the bad part, the Jumbo shrimp were So Over cooked, they werent just rubbery, they were HARD. I know my shrimp, I use to work @ Joe's Fisheries on Cortland, and this shrimp was bad. The Cat fish was ok, some bites fishy, but not horrible. The home made tartar sauce was too chunky, to the point that there was no room for "sauce". The fried mushroom were good, but then again, how can you mess something like that up right?
Not sure I would go back...but if there is something else they make that is really good, Id like to know.
rude, rude, rude. the food here is very good. i was too excited to bring some of their delicious fish sandwich home to my husband. order taking: rude. call back to see if i could come in to get the food (baby sleeping in the car): rude. went inside to pay: rude.
i respect myself and deserve to be treated well. no good tasting food is ever worth the compromise.
I am glad my friend found this place on http://Restaurant.com because if she hadn't we probably would have never found this place.
I really like the food here and it was all cooked to order the only reason I didn't give this place a 5 star is because I don't feel fried food travels to well and I will tell you what I mean. Â My friend and I went there on a Friday night, great cashier and we decided to eat our shrimp and calamari at the place it was so good we knew we had to let her mom taste the freshness of the food.
Unfortunately, we did a take out the next day and my friend only lives about 15 to 20 mins away from the restaurant but it just did not taste as good.
Now, is that there fault NO, that is something that is out of their control! Â I say if you can eat there, get your food fresh from the grease!
We had the Jumbo shrimp, Fried catfish nuggets, French Fries, Fried plantains(one of the thing I really didn't care for because I am use to a different kind of plantain), Fried Mushrooms, Fried calamari, potato salad(something else that wasn't my favorite because it didn't have a lot of flavor), cole slaw(I couldn't eat because of some of the ingredients), the sauces TASTY and if I'm not mistaken homemade double yum!
I really want to taste their crab cake and frog legs that is on my list the next time I visit!!!
All and All this is a great place to go with a very inexpensive and great way to have fresh seafood.
The staff is friendly, The food is good and the owner is very nice...enough to make you do...yep you guessed it "The happy dance!"
There is so much to love about this place: Great seafood and fish, easy street parking, fast service, and cold beers. Â I've lived in the neighborhood for years and can't believe I just came here for the first time.
I ordered the fish tacos, and had some of my husband's fish and chips. The fish tacos were fresh and juicy, with the right amount of toppings and sauce. Â The fried plantains are nice too. Â Fries are delish. Â
Ahhh if only I could eat here every day and not gain a pound. Â Seating outside is cute ( even if it is Western ave).
AWWW HELL YEAH!
I felt like I was in Forest Gump, shrimp this and shrimp that.
This is an AMAZING PLACE!
I saw this place on Check Please a long time ago. Â I finally got to check it out.
The actual restaurant is SUPER cute! Â Follows the theme and just fun on the inside. Â
The staff cracks me up. Â The guy obviously knew we were not from the area. Â He pegged us asap. Â It was pretty funny. Â Puerto Rican and just said everything that was on his mind. Â
Anyway, he totally helped us out with our selections. Â We had decided on the grilled mahi mani tacos, the shrimp po boy, the shrimp jibarito and some fries. Â What I LOVE about this place, its a no frills space BUT they understand what you want.
The food was AMAZING! Â To all you people that think that Big N Little's is the shit, check out this place. Â I liked it better. Â The flavor on the shrimp po boy was AMAZING! Â Each little piece had the perfect fried crust with the right amount of seasoning. Â Plus, they loaded us up with some sauce on the bun and also we had plenty of sauces on the side to spice up if we wanted to. Â It was nice to have extra. Â The grilled mahi mani tacos were some of the best fish tacos I have ever had. Â I absolutely loved them. Â Again, perfect amount of sauce with seasoning. Â They even were on corn tortillas, which I normally dont like, however, this place knows how to do it so its not dry and crusty. Â The jibarito was pretty good as well. Â I liked the flavoring on the shrimp. Â It was different than the po boy, and delicious. Â It was pretty greasy, which I am sure is unavoidable. Â The fries were really swimming in grease so I would say avoid these.
The price was so freaking cheap! Â
Great hours! Â They are open on SUNDAYS!!!!!!!!!!! Â YAYAYAYAYAAAYYYYY! Â My favorite day to eat bad because of my usual hangover from Sat night.
If you havent been, go. Â You will not be disappointed. Â This place is AMAZING
Was craving a shrimp po-boy so got delivery from here. The guy on the phone was rude though the delivery guy affable enough.
The po-boy was nasty - small, much too breaded shrimp, lettuce limp, tomatoes looked old, and the bread just average. This was NOT a po-boy!
Potato salad was bland, powdery, store-bought. No, actually store-bought usually tastes better.
The worst was the crab cake. It was advertised as "lump crab meat. Nope. Just tasted like fried mush, except mush would be much less chewy.
Don't waste your money. Craving not sated.
There are so many things to like about this little place. Â
Fried plantains. Fried shrimp. Fried fish. Fried Crab cakes. Fried, Fried, Fried. Â Delicious.
I've come here on a few different occasions, and every time, the food was cooked perfectly. Â Consistently is something to be admired in a small shop. Â
The shrimp jibarito is life-changing. Â The chef makes everything right in front of you, so you can actually watch him peel the plantain and smash it into sandwichy goodness. Â They are fried to perfection without being overly greasy, which cannot always be said about other jibaritos places. The shrimp is always perfectly juicy and crunchy. Â Definitely get a side of sweet potato fries, too.
I'll agree with many other reviewers who said that the wait to actually get the food can get out of hand. Â I have waited longer than 30 minutes, and when I have gone with a group, the food does not come out at the same time, so half of our party was done eating before the other half got our food. Â it was completely forgiven after I took a bite, though.
We were the only ones in there and food for the three of us took about 30 minutes to come out. The guy behind the counter was shooting for loud-mouth-in-yo-face-NYC-deli-tender, but he came off a bit limp and just seemed a tad pathetic. Others might consider the tenor simply rude. The half hour wait in an empty joint didn't help.
But the food tasted very good. Extremely greasy, but very good tasting. Set aside an afternoon to process the fry oil. To-go containers come with a pair of Depends for the oily discharge.
A great casual place for a fast, fun meal. Â I went with the friend and we shared the frog legs (large and meaty), jumbo fried shrimp (tasty but not amazing) and a shrimp jibarito (which was DELICIOUS!). Â
I will definitely return, not only for the food, but for the friendliness of the staff. Â A fun, laid back group of guys who make you feel comfortable and at home.
Thanks for a great meal and a fun spot in the middle of my day.
I really enjoyed the shrimp jibarito. The flavor and the way they cooked the shrimp was delicious. I enjoyed a few other items but they were just fried so not much to say about it.
The variety of dipping sauces was great, some of them were interesting. The hot wings should be made with a different kind of sauce, the bottled hot sauce they use has a specific taste and I would prefer a more traditional hot sauce on my wings.
My friend who I was with claimed his jumbo 1 pound of fried shrimp were frozen because of their color inside and texture. I begged to differ. I would hope a shrimp house wouldn't serve their featured item from a freezer. Maybe they could clear that up for us.
I will definitely go back and bring someone who loves shrimp and can appreciate the jibarito that rocked my world. I want to try the shrimp tacos next for sure. One last thing, the platanos were a little dry, they needed GARLIC, bad!
But the whole Puerto Rican seafood spot is a fresh new thing, and I liked it.
I have to say...I really, really liked this place. As others have said, this isn't complex stuff...it's fried seafood. But from what I can tell they do it very very well.
I had the shrimp taco special....they were outstanding. I don't think the shrimp were grilled but it tasted kind of like that. I didn't think to ask but I was pleased they weren't fried. Very very tasty, good size and they did not skimp with the portion. The only minor complaint I had was it came with some fried plantain chips were pretty much tasteless. I would have appreciated maybe some rice or something, some other kind of side.
I also tried the fried shrimp and the calamari...which was cooked perfectly. The breading was not excessive, it was not greasy and I appreciate the variety of dipping sauces- there was some kid of hot sauce, a standard cocktail sauce and if I recall some kind of creamy sauce as well.
I also really appreciated the beer selection. I thought the price was fair- for the tacos, shrimp, calamari and 2 beers was ~35$. The service was great too, everyone was friendly. I will definitely be back.
I absolutely loved this place. We ordered frog legs, jumbo shrimp, fish chips and various sides. To my most pleasant surprise not one single thing was greasy. We noticed that they used different friers for each different item so they flavours don't blend together and your taste each individual dish as it was intended.
I don't eat frog legs (I have an iguana and her back legs remind me of a frogs legs) but Jim had them and he said they were amazing. Â The Jumbo shrimp took at least 3 bites to eat, they were HUGE, each bite was a mouthful. Â The Fish Chips were breaded mahi mahi and melted in your mouth, not fishy at all!!!
Everything came with some amazing sauces that compliments the dishes perfectly.
I highly recommend Joeys and we will most certainly be back!
If you're looking for a Caribbean Shrimp house, THIS ROCKS.
Let me put it this way... Â if you are looking for Tuscan friend black snapper, this is not the place for you; try Shaw's. Â If you want some delicious fried shrimp/scallops/frogs legs, this is your spot.
The food is fresh, they have Corona and Half Acre, and the service is TITS!!!!! Â Â Apart from the friendly cook, the owner is an amazing guy who delivers great service at table side... Â Where do you get that in this pretentious city?
GO HERE.
I went to New Orleans about six months ago so I know what this type of food should taste like and especially what a PO BOY should taste like.
I admit I REALLY wanted to enjoy their food because they are so close to my house. Â The shrimp po boy had tiny shrimp in about the size of a dollar coin. Â It had about as much flavor in it as you would find in a fish sandwich at your local middle school. Â Their PO BOYS suck.
My wife and I ordered the hush puppies, shrimp po boy, crab sandwich, and a half pound of their jumbo shrimp. Â The total was $28.31.
I don't mind paying for seafood as it is expensive to buy good stuff (Dirks Fish 2070 North Clybourn Avenue has great stuff, but it is really expensive.)
The hush puppies were pretty good actually, but I don't think I will be returning just for these.
The crab sandwich was the size of a dollar menu McChicken. Â I took a bite of my wife's sandwich and it was not memorable. Â When you charge $9 for one sandwich it needs to have crab in it that you can see and more importantly taste. Â
Now on to the "Jumbo" shrimp. Â I'm not sure if the fat boy behind the counter who took our money and prepared our food AND licked his fingers after was cherry picking all the large shrimp for himself or if they just need a new supplier but these shrimp are NOT JUMBO.
The best part is that I put the bag of shrimp on my postal scale (I own a distribution company) the bag weighed 6oz (including the bag). Â Last time I checked there are 16oz in a pound and 8oz in a half pound. Â So we were screwed out of 25% of our order. Â
Nice job guys. Â Won't be returning and I advise you to save yourself some time and head somewhere like FISH BAR (it isn't cheap but at least the food is done well and worth the money).
First of all, I don't recommend this place.
I live in the area and I've always wanted to try the food in this place. Finally, tonight my husband and I went there and It was a disappointment, all they have is fried food with no flavor and it is overpriced for what they sell. I mean, I don't mind spending money on seafood, because I know is not cheap to buy a pound of shrimp BUT I mind paying for seafood that doesn't have any flavor.
We ordered 8 oz of shrimp to go and when we got home we found out that the size of the shrimp was small and it didn't even weigh 8oz and the pod boy.
The one nice thing I have to say about this place is that they really seemed to have spent some time decorating it. Â It looks nice on the inside. Â But I would rather eat somewhere with great food than go somewhere to look at their barstools that look like bouys.
This place is awesome! I am a huge shrimp fan and any form it comes in will do, but I love it fried. Also a fan of a good po' boy sandwich, which are not that easy to come by in this city!
My friend and I have been meaning to try this place out for the past year or so and finally made it up there tonight. The guy behind the counter was friendly (I think he was the owner) and took our orders. He informed of the special, which I ordered: $9.99 for 1/2 lb of shrimp, fries, and choice of drink...pretty great deal! My BFF ordered the "Crabby Patty" sandwich, which was a crab cake on a fresh bun with lettuce, tomato, and some kind of sauce. I didn't try it but she said it was awesome.
All around a good place, would reccomend to any fan of fried fish! Go out and support this guy...didn't see nearly as many people here as there were at the Pizza Hut at North & Western...lets hear it for supporting small business! Go!
$13 for two sodas, plantain chips, a pound and a half of fried fish, PLUS french fries... which wound up being way too much food, even for two hungry people. Â
I love the choice of sauces, and was surprised by how much I enjoyed the spicy mayo sauce. Â Good food, great service, clean restaurant. Â I will be coming back here frequently.
This was a nice place to go and try. I am not a huge fried foods fan of course unless it is french fries!
It is about a 2.5 ok A 2 is too harsh and a 3 is maybe too much.
They have cute decor and decent food. I am not sure I would go back. But maybe to give some other menu items a change. The one this I did not like is everything was fried in the same batter so it made it less distinguishable from each other.
We had several items
1) Frog Legs- I have never had those before and while they kind of do taste like chicken I could not get over the fact that i was holding almost the whole frog minus head and front legs.
2.) Crab Cakes- They were OK but we did take out so they were cold. Really cold in the center.
3.) Shrimp - It was OK. I am not a fried shrimp expert like some other people so they were OK.
4.) Hush Puppies - Always a good choice.
5.) Catfish nuggets - I am not sure what was going on with those. They had some sort of different taste to them than usual. You would have to try for yourself
6.) Calamari- Was freshly breaded I know this because I watched them do it and it was the best dish to me.
Was I a happy camper after a shrimp po' boy? Â Just ask my belly ---- (rumble rumble rumble). Â In tummy-talk, that means, "dang that was good, lets go back there for more!"
The Po'Boy is $6.95 and is a hefty sandwich that has fresh shrimp from the Gulf, lettuce, tomatoes, mayo, spicy sauce, onions, and all in an Italian roll. Â The shrimp is made into popcorn shrimp style - slightly zingy and crunchy. Â Yum.
The decor inside is very cool too. Â Heck at the very least, just walk inside to see some cool hand-drawn marine artwork on the walls! :-)
While the sandwich was certainly amazing, I think that the prices of the whole menu are just a tad above their price-point - aka, a tad too expensive. Just $1 dollar cheaper for everything, and this may have been a 5-star review.
Also, be warned that the TV on the wall may be on a bit loud... good if you like watching TV, but hard for conversations. Â I rec to Joey's Shrimphouse to turn it down a bit. Â ;-)
Cheers!
I've been going to this place about 10-15 times now, so I must like it. Â The shrimp, fries and drink special (9.99) hits the spot for me, with the spicy mayo which is, in my humble opinion, pretty tasty stuff. Â The fries are pretty good, and I'm not a huge fry-guy.
It's right around the corner from me, and I recommend it to Humboldt Park/Bucktown people as a good/quick place to get your shrimp fix.
I've got to jump on the bandwagon here. Â Decent shrimp but for $16 a pound, I expected something fantastic. Â They were a bit dry and over cooked. Â Especially since the menu is so limited, you'd think they could master the items they offer. Â Sweet potato fries definitely left a lot to be desired. Â I expected crispy with a little salt. Â I got mushy and flavorless. Â
The restaurant itself is clean and bright. Â I love the decor. Â Service was friendly and my order was ready in just a few minutes.
Shrimp Po' Boy! Â Yum! Â
I really love a good shrimp po' boy... I like the version served at Joey's Shrimp House. Â It's a little bit spicy... pleasant, not overwhelming. Â It's walking distance from my house so I imagine I'll be here again!
We also got some catfish bites. Â They were okay. Â I have to be in a mood for them so I won't judge them. Â My boyfriend really seemed to like them. Â They could also cook they hush puppies a little longer. Â The fries we got were the perfect kind to go with a po' boy and the spicy mayo was awesome!
All-in-all - I like it!
Prices are good and the people working there are really nice. Â Give it a try!
Pretty much agree with the rest of the folks here.
the shrimp is just ok. For $16 a pound, I would expect a lot better flavor and crunchy goodness.
Catfish nuggets were decent, but the fish was a little chewy/rubbery.
The worst disappointment for me were the hushpuppies. They were mushy inside and had little flavor. You would think this would be an easy one to get right, but I've had better at LJS/Captain D's.
The sauces were fairly bland and unremarkable.
It is byob and the staff is friendly, but this is a last minute joint for me if I'm checking out a show at the empty bottle and everywhere else just happens to be packed.
Great friendly service. Â Jumbo shrimp is really good. Â Hush puppies and breaded mushrooms are good too. Â Give a thumbs down to the fish sandwich. Â Too much breading and not enough fish. Â Dipping sauces could use some work but the cocktail sauce, although pretty standard, is really good. Â I liked the coleslaw but it could have used a hint of sweetness added to it (just my preference). Â Â Did I mention the Jumbo Shrimp? Â Because they deserve a second mention. Â Best thing on the menu that I have tried so far. Â Very clean and nice restaurant but not very big so the place is more geared towards take out. Â If you like fried seafood, I highly recommend you check the place out. Â
Parking is easy.
I think this place has some potential. I mean, it is just fried food, right? I'll start with that.
I ordered a wide variety off their menu. The best was the jumbo shrimp and the habanero dipping sauce. However, the hush puppies came out lukewarm (the middle was still frozen on some), the catfish had no seasoning, calamari had a strange breading that was soggy and fell off when attempting to eat, and the mango sauce didn't seem to go with anything. Some things that I thought were pretty standard when serving fried seafood were missing (like lemon with the calamari, tartar sauce with catfish) Fried food shouldn't be this hard...
