Have dined here a number of times, most recent visit was this weekend after not having been for sometime. Hostess is terrible,  unaccommodating and seems to serve more as a place holder than a functioning employee. After being seated late for our reservation we waited at least 15 minutes for our server to show up. We asked twice about his presence before he finally came with the revelation that he didn't know we were there. This is a Friday night 8:15 reservation...
We ordered immediately as we had already had plenty of time to see the menu. We ordered 3 appetizers and entrees for our party of 4. We were hungry and ready for appetizers ASAP. After waiting another 50 minutes, with the waiter returning only twice to literally breeze by the table to report our food will be up shortly, we received our appetizers and entrees AT THE SAME TIME, with no acknowledgment or apology. He simply stated the kitchen was backed up and left.  I will say, our food was good. The spicy seafood soup is excellent, my dragon roll was great, my husband loves the sea bass... but, I doubt we will return to be simply handled by the waitstaff and hostess in hopes of some good food we may wait for upwards of an hour to eat.

I love going here for lunch!  I usually get the hot-and-sexy sushi combo, though I tried a bento box the last time and liked it.  Nice atmosphere upstairs, great for small group lunches with coworkers or friends.

Came here for lunch with some co-workers. This being my first visit, I ended up getting completely sidetracked by some of the Korean dishes on the menu and opted for the bulgogi lettuce wrap. For some reason, I was thinking it was going to be one lettuce wrap, not like an appetizer of lettuce wraps. In writing this, I fully know that doesn't make any sense, but I simply note it because I probably would have ordered something else had I realized what I was actually getting. The bulgogi beef was rather underwhelming, I must say, and the lettuce should have been dried a bit more before it was put on the plate. I hate a puddle of water on my plate from it. It was ok but nothing special.

Also, unrelated to the food: I understand this is supposed to be a cool night spot, but my god, the red plush velvet and what not just read as tacky to me. You know what, this actually is somewhat related to the food. Whenever I've enjoyed good quality sushi, it has consistently come from places that didn't fuss over flashy, err tacky decorations. I honestly will admit that the decorations--coupled with the menu of non-Japanese items--kind of swayed me from trying the sushi on my trip here.

Basically, all I can say is that Kai was ok, but I don't foresee myself jumping up and down and begging to eat here anytime in the near future. In any case, I will be sure to update my review when I actually try the sushi here.

The hostess sucks so beware. It's like talking to a wall. She let us stand around for 15 minutes even though there were lots of empty tables and booths downstairs.
Oh well, the rest is a lot better. I love the slightly brothel-like atmosphere and low lighting. The booths are huge, should you ever get into one.
Get their fried mozzarella asparagus thingies (can't remember the technical term). Those are sooooo delicious.
Do yourself a favor, sit at the bar. The bartenders are very knowledgeable, friendly and funny. You get great specials and don't even have to deal with the bitch Cerberus at the door.

This is the only sushi joint I tried while visiting Springfield for work. I was impressed by the decor; it felt like an upscale, Vegas style club. Lots of rich tones, heavy fabric, and beaded curtains. It looks like a really cool place to hang out, or one of the few options in the area.

My co-worker and I dined here for lunch. We had a few sushi rolls that tasted great. We didn't have any of the traditional sashimi, nigiri, or rolls. They have pretty fancy dishes and sushi on their menu and the prices are comparable to what I'd see at restaurants in Seattle. The major downside of my meal was the miso butterfish. The fish tasted old and had a weird flavor. I won't order the miso butterfish, but if I'm back in Springfield, I'll dine here again.

    Worst sushi in Springfield.

Feels more like a dance club without a dance floor than it does a sushi restaurant.

    Go to MIJURI instead.

I take back my good review. We went back on a "busy" night and everything sucked. I got hot oil from their stupid hot rock splattered straight at my face and the manager didn't even come to apologize. And since they were "busy" (my ass) the food was slow and sucked. The waitress was apologetic and everything, but it wasn't her job to be apologizing for the chef pouring CLEARLY way too much oil in that stupid thing. Not coming back, annoyed. Just a mega disappointment that the first time I came here I was comparing it to Tao in NY and now I think it sucks.

    OMG.

    Yum.

I come from CA, where our sushi rocks.  However, this place is right up there with the best CA sushi joints.

I was a little taken aback by the night club atmosphere but the food was just so wonderful.  We had the calamari appetizer.  Dipping sauces were wonderful.  I recommend squeezing the lime into the sauce that tastes a little garlic-y and pouring in a bit of soy sauce.  Takes a little garlic edge of and goes great with the rings.

We shared three rolls, all spicy, all amazing.  The yummy, American beauty and back to the Kai.  Personal favorite was the American beauty.  The yummy roll lacked a spark (kinda "bland" for sushi) but a good roll for a picky eater.

I adored this place and can't wait to go back.

If you're looking for a nice, quick lunch venue, try Kai.  The food is tasty and the service staff very friendly.  The tables up on the 2nd floor are a bit crowded and the stairs are many; however, the tables on the 1st floor are very sparing and the ambiance less desirable.  Be sure to try the "Wok Fired Edamame" as it's a wonderful treat.

I've been to Kai often; Jun and Phil run this place well. They know how to create an experience for customers, especially young people. I like some of the dishes, and I never expect authenticity in places like Kai (or Ocean Zen). the rolls are way too complicated, too much cheese, sauce (too many fried rolls too). But they might suit most local customers (well cooked and deep fried). But if you are willing, try some of the appetizers (not chile poppers). The cod dish is quite good when the kitchen is not too busy, then there is the soft tofu appetizer simmering in light sauce.

Love it, love it...Its my fav sushi place in Springfield. I love all the specials. The venue is great, I wish we had more space between each table, music is a little bit loud, your order does not take to long to be on your table.

Kai is a great place to eat and have drinks late night! The food is fantastic, and the staff is very friendly and accommodating. I would highly recommend Kai to anyone looking for amazing sushi and unique cocktails.

I have experienced a lot better. Of the 4 rolls we had 2 were good 1 was ok and 1 should be named the bland box roll. That was by far the lamest roll I have ever had, and by lame I really do mean it couldn't walk to the soy sauce or walk out of it. It falls apart no matter what you do. The one with jalapeno flakes is a very tasty roll, the candy cane looking one is also tasty. It's a California roll with tuna and hamachi on the top. The decor is very modern and they try to make sure they are always hip. You can tell they are hip because your service is sloooow and they don't bring you everything you order. The upside is they all do wear long black aprons and the lights are dim so you know you cool just being there and that should be enough, if you want good service and good food well that is just asking too much. You can't have everything.

:( and it seems i cant get sushi other than cali. oh how i will miss you california

the set up is nice, but the service blows!

took forever and i give the benefit of the doubt that good food takes time.
two rolls were good (sorry tried looking up the names but the site doesnt work)  they had spicy crab, and spicy tuna and i highly recommend

i asked them to make a spicy tuna crunch roll since they didnt have any rolls with them... weird. and i ended up getting a flavorless, un-spicy tuna that was dipped in tempura that was fried and then put in the middle of the roll with rice around it.  i asked the waitress if it is cooked and she said yes which i then informed her that wouldnt it defeat the purpose of sushi? if the fish is cooked?  she then proceeded to tell me that all the fish is cooked to a certain point and then put on the rolls so nothing is raw

MOST RANDOM THING I HAVE EVER HEARD! so all my life ive been eating slightly cooked fish??? i felt it would have been rude to call her out telling her she doesnt know squat about sushi, but kept it in.

she also was extremely friendly to my other guest.... who happened to be my husband.  and she would ignore me when i would talk to her and only talk to him.  we found it hilarious.
    so jealous girls beware

the Jurassic park roll didnt look like the picture on here.  they got lazy and it looks terrible, and they wanted to charge $2 to have any kind of roll fried on the outside

very disappointed.   i think maybe the hostess Cory wrote about was promoted to waitress.  oh and by the way its supposedly college night on weds.... forget about it if you have the waitress i had. she will tell you that they no longer had it.  wish i remembered her name :/

My favorite sushi in Springfield MO which actually has the best sushi I've ever had though I've tried sushi in KC and St. Louis as well. The Miami Vice roll is amazing and while fried sushi may sound odd to some it is delicious. I went there for special occasions only since sushi can get expensive. The atmosphere is gorgeous upstairs where dinner is served. Its all plush velvety red and black with gorgeous beaded off areas and beautiful lighting. My friends were always impressed when I introduced them to Kai and I even went there for my sister's bachelorette party. Its right by a parking garage so don't worry about parking.

I'm giving Kai 5 stars for a few reasons...

It's good, I love the atmosphere and it's one of the best places to eat in Springfield Mo.
That's right kids.. It wouldn't get 5 stars if it were in NYC or SF but for fucks sake it's in Springfield Missouri! This isn't exactly a sophisticated town full of fine dining.

Anyway, good drinks and good sushi for the Midwest. My only complaint is that they use that nasty Japanese mayo sauce. Cut that out! I don't want mayo anything on my sushi pls thx. Oh and my little brother bitches that the teriyaki gives him the shits and he'd rather go to Sonic.. But that's kids for you.

...went back for round two, don't know why...

Hostess still playing favorites, so we left. On the way out, another hostess pushed my girlfriend to get around her. Battery charges pending.

There is this place hidden within the brownstones of downtown Springfield, that definitely spend alot of money on their led changing wall hehehehe. The atmosphere is bazar, are you in Missouri or Miami?

Whichever the case the sushi here is good, the presentation always makes them taste even better.

There is tempora vegi/cheese dish served with avocado sauce that is definitely a most.

On Wednesday nights they have very cheap sushi deals.

Overall its a good night out in the town.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Springfield!  What a great place to bring a group of friends to sample different kinds of sushi and have a few drinks.  Wednesdays are college nights and they have all kinds of $2 and $3 specials for everyone to try and share at the table.

The bar downstairs can get crowded, but there's an entire floor upstairs with little nooks and crannies for a more intimate space.  Check it out!

The trendy choice for sushi in Springfield. Ultra modern decor, great location downtown.  More of your upscale crowd or those on a date-night.   People always seen to dress to impress here.  Sushi menu is the best, but expect to also pay for the best.  Steps from movie theatre make it perfect for a dinner and a movie date night.

Kai has very authentic, great tasting sushi. I've been there a few times now and never been disappointed. The drinks are good quality too. Upstairs has a nice group room with good lighting and very helpful staff.

I have eaten there dozens of times, drank there twice as many times. It's a great location with amazing food & sushi. The owners are fantastic and always willing to say hello to anyone and everyone. Staff is great and Chris, the guy in charge of catering (who is also part of the waitstaff) is fantastic to work with. The spot has great feel & ambiance and is one of the best locales to 'be seen' in Springfield. On the weekends they have great DJ's downstairs in the bar area while serving phenomenal food upstairs. My only complaint is a few times they have overbooked reservations and made myself or other parties wait, but they always take care of you on the check side for the inconvenience. Highly recommend this place for sushi lovers and Japanese steakhouse lovers!
