First of all, I don't like writing bad reviews. I feel guilty about it. Im writing this because The L Cafe has a really nice staff, the food is priced at a decent rate, perfect for a quick, quite lunch if you work in the loop. The food is not good. I ordered a turkey burger and it was most certainly a frozen patty that seemed to be undercooked or at least it was precooked, frozen and then served to me at room temp and it was kinda soggy. I also ordered the chili and it tasted like nothing but salt, barely any flavor. I felt sick to my stomach after I ate it. I had some bottled orange juice from the cooler and that was great. My advice to the management is to train the people that work there to cook frozen patties well if that is what you want to serve to people. If you are planning to serve people chili with cheap ingredients, at least put some hot sauce in there. I suggest that whoever manages the place tastes the food, its not good.
Review Source:I walk by this place almost on a daily basis but had never stopped in. Today I did after the place I really wanted to go was closed.
L Cafe is a quaint, almost vintage type of place. I liked it. It was very quiet yet inviting. The blond behind the counter was very pleasant and waited patiently as I looked over the expansive menu.
There is  A LOT to choose from but I decided to go with someone basic. I just got a grilled cheese with fries and it was great. Granted, it's hard to mess somthing like that up but still...;) For $6, I got the sandwich, fries and a drink. That's not half bad for a place located just outside the loop.
I will say though that the portion was very small. It filled me up (I'm a petite gal) but if you're a big eater than I'd guess that the portion size woudln't be enough for you. If you're a first timer I'd definately say to ask questions prior to ordering.
I have a feeling that this place often gets overlooked due to it's location and that's too bad. I'll most certainly be back!
Good food, good prices. My first visit here I had the roasted 1/2 chicken with roasted redskin potatoes and veggies. The food was cooked to order and you can actually see them preparing the food, which i liked a lot. The chicken was moist and seasoned well. The veggies i had to tweek a little but still they were good. I got a lot of food for only around $6.50. I am a happy girl.
Review Source:I discovered this spot as I was walking by... Â I was immediately drawn in after peering through the large picture windows to see a charming, bright diner style cafe. Â They offer a friendly and inviting dining experience. Â The staff is so welcoming, and friendly - a very refreshing change of pace!
Menu options are plenty - with breakfast, lunch and dinner (plenty of grab and go snacks too!). Â Everything is made to order, and fresh. Â I found the prices reasonable for my budget, especially being in the South Loop - The L Cafe is a great alternative to the fast food chains in the area. Â
I encourage others to give this cute eatery a try - great experience!
I think Gina's was better but only because they offered a patty melt and their place seemed to at least have some character. Granted TLC is new but its food was so bleh. I had the veggie skewers with the two sides, spinach and the green beans and everything was bland. I mean they put salt on everything but it just tasted like bland with salt on top. My buddy had the burger and fries and I guess it did the trick...put food inside stomach. Dude, you can't give your burger a name, "TLC Burger", and have it come out like any other burger at any other greasy spoon. I'll go back to try the roasted chicken only because Planet moved all they way down by Wells. Â If you know the area and eat lunch here often then you'll know what I mean when I say that this place is going down like that Chinese/pizza joint on Jackson. I gave one star because of the bad first impression and an extra star for only being one block from work. I'll be back so GIT ON YER SHIT SON!
Review Source:I ordered a ham egg and cheese croissant and what I got was something that Dunkin Donuts does a better job of making and for a better price. It was $6 for kraft singles, cubed ham, and eggs.
There were only three people in there so they weren't busy and every single table was covered in crumbs. It also smelled like dirt or maybe drywall when I walked in.
I don't think this place will be around for long.
Tried this place hoping I would find a diamond in the rough.. Turned out to be a bonafide lump of coal. Had their three egg breakfast and coffee. One star for subbing tomatoes for hash browns, and generally polite service.. But that's the only positive thing about this place. The eggs were supposed to be over easy, came out over crispy and cold. In fact, everything was cold. The cook was HORRIBLE. To add to this, they had run out of flimsy plastic knives. So I had to cut my sausage and eggs with the flimsy fork, and spread butter with a flimsy spoon handle. Not going back.
Review Source:The L Cafe replaced an old diner-style lunch spot that often got overlooked, even on a busy day. It now has a brighter interior and it was my hope that they have an updated menu as well. I was rather disappointed when I found out that their menu was not very exciting.
On one side of the kitchen, they have the regular diner breakfast grill fare. The other side of the kitchen serves simple American entrees like meatloaf, rotisserie chicken, etc with sides like grilled vegetables, mashed potatoes, and spinach.
I ended up ordering the parmesan crusted tilapia with spinach and roasted vegetables. It might sound fancy but don't be fooled. The tilapia was cold and the crust was slightly burnt and quite doughy. The sides were cold as well, spinach chopped up like baby food, and roasted vegetables were watery and tasted like store bought spice mix. I tried very hard to like it but it tasted like cold cafeteria food. Just horrendous. I would stay away if I were you.
