I had lunch here for the first time today. There was no line and I was in and out in less than 5 minutes. I got the buffalo chicken wrap and the pasta salad. It was only $6, so I definitely disagree with the other reviews that say this place is expensive. The wrap was perfect size for lunch and not too overbearing. The chicken tasted really fresh and definitely not pre-made. Not the best buffalo wrap by any means (you'll have a heard time beating Gaslight's), but in the loop, it's definitely one of the best ones I've had.
Review Source:The people serving you the food don't know how much it costs, so you have to ask the lady at the cash register. She told me $2, then when you actually pick it up and buy it, she changed it $4. I ask why it doubled, she said she asked her manager (something she couldn't be bothered to do before I committed to it).
I told her this kind of thing (it's not the first time although it is the worst) was gonna prevent me from coming in again, and she gave me this spectacular look of both contempt and incomprehension. I abandoned the attempt to explain myself and got the hell out.
And the ravioli tastes like plastic too, so there you go.
I feel like I am a regular at this place. Â I work in the building and have stopped by at least once for everything. Â For breakfast they have made to order omelets or sandwiches, which you can get on a bagel, English muffin or a selection of toast. Â The omelette's can also be made with egg whites and veggies, which is my favorite. Â They also have a yogurt, oatmeal, and fruit bar. Â Yes very yummy! Â For lunch they host a daily special ranging from chicken marsala to quesadillas. Â There lunch items include a salad bar, fresh soups, sandwich and a chili bar. Â However, my favorite item is their buffalo chicken wrap. Â They have around 5 different wraps to choose from, but I would highly recommend the buffalo wrap with the pasta salad as a side.
One thing to note about the cafe is everything is prepped right before meal time and if they run out of any item such as the buffalo wrap they aren't going to make anymore. Â I would recommend going around the actually meal time when the food is fresh, ready and yummy!
A note: I am reviewing the salad bar only because this is what I ate here, only.
I used to work across the street and I am addicted - ADDICTED - to salad bars. This is my favorite, favorite because they have the exact ingredients necessary for me to make the best salad ever (well, one of them, i am a master saladstriss). Kind of pricey on the salad, it's true, but it's the main thing i miss about the Loop now that I'm not working and not going to the Loop just for lunch.
Like the Rosebud Express (right next door), the Madison Street Cafe is my go-to for lunch in the winter months. I go there so often I think it's about time I learned the names of the great guys behind the counter. I usually will have a green pepper and mushroom omelette in the morning (you can pick the ingredients)...and a grilled chicken sandwich with a side of squash for lunch. Like I said, the guys working there are great and will often customize a lunch for you. The best part is I get a good discount because I work in the building.
Review Source:For what ever reason, I always try to make it from Madison and Wells over to State Street to do some serious power shopping on my lunch break. Â For those cold winters days, I have discovered that I could cut through this building along with the Sears building to stay out of the cold. Â This is how I came upon the chocolate pudding cup the size of my head, complete with a few Nila Wafers buried inside. Â Other than the pudding, I am not a huge fan, unless I catch them on Quesadilla day, of which I am a sucker for. Â The ambiance is not bad either; I can get a quite table if I am feeling unsocial, and read a book or magazine.
Review Source:I have to update my review based on the breakfast here. Â Pass the Starbucks that is out-of-control crowded between 8:45-9:15, merely one revolving door away is Madison Street Cafe. Â I eventually got over my springtime love for the BEC crossaint and, after a brief cinnamon-raisin toast phase in the summer, started to switch it up a bit. Â The lox and bagel with capers saved my life last week and the omelet bar is a godsend. Â Other dressy work-bound girls seem to love the egg white omelets with veggies. Â I still can't believe you can get breakfast this good right before work, with six different blends of Seattle's Best coffee, and there is never too long a line. Â
Additional notes about lunch: Â Yes, the sandwiches set out at lunch are pre-made but you can also order any other sandwich you want, and the pre-made ones are pretty good, especially the turkey and ham pesto one, the roast beef and cheddar wrap, and the salmon and avocado croissant. Â The parmesan pasta salad side is a bit addicting. Â The best lunch specials are the chicken enchiladas verde with rice and beans. Â I also dig rosemary pork chop day. Â There are four different au bon pain soups and a chili bar as well.
The salad bar scares me. Â I don't look at it much.. but there's so many other nuggets of yumminess in this place.
Definitely not a 4 star joint, between more of a 2-3 star but give'em an inch they'll take a yard and I'm not a Dolphin fan so don't give out yards for free. Â Sandwiches are pre-made, which is quite lame. Â There is no line at this place so is it hard to make sandwiches on demand? Â Special of the day is food protein and two sides under hot lamps, reminds me a lot of Mac Kelly's but instead of $4.99 it'll set you back a whopping $6.99. Â Tasted a lot like Mac Kelly's quality to boot. Â Seating was plentiful... I wonder why?
Review Source:Not having worked on this Chicago-based project in over a year, I had forgotten about Madison Street Grille altogether until I had to get lunch yesterday and given the incessant snowing and sub-freezing temperatures, my options were: Starbucks and Madison Street Grille. I chose the latter as it had more options but it is still limited for a diversified deli. Limited sandwich and salad options, and just two soups (?!) - minus one star. However, the food they have is excellent, the pre-made wraps taste just as good as a freshly made and grilled sandwich. They also have another station where there is something different everyday I believe, I've yet to try it though. The staff are really nice, and efficient, and are always willing to take your specific requests, however annoying they may be.
Review Source:I've worked in the building in which Madison Street Cafe resides for almost two years. When I want something incredibly quick without having to leave the building, I take a trip down the escalator and see what the Cafe has to offer. The lunch fare isn't especially wonderful (at least, not compared to Rosebud Express which is next door), although I have enjoyed a few sandwiches. I'm not a huge fan of the side salads that come with the sandwiches, although I can't put my finger on why that is. Â HOWEVER, they DO have a salad bar. While it is definitely not the most expansive, it has enough to make me happy... and I love salad bars almost as much as I love booze bars. For some reason though, I have never been a huge fan of their dressing. But thats cool, whatever, I have some in the office anyway.
As noted by Ellie B, they also have breakfast. I have never ventured away from my staple Everything-Bagel w/chive cream cheese, but it looks like a lot of people are gettin eggs (fried, omelets, etc). I'll stick with my heavy-duty carbs for now.
This is by NO MEANS the cheapest spot in the loop. Â But it's quick and fairly tasty, so that's what I suppose you pay for.
They have a fruit/yogurt/cottage cheese/granola bar in the am's, as well as some delicious lox and bagels. Â However if it's an omelet you're after, I'd go next door to Rosebud.
As for lunch, they've got wraps, sandwiches, salads and hot foods galore! Â I just like the fact that there's so much to choose from. Â
The guys behind the counter are primarily friendly, though I can't say the same for the cashiers!
