I am surprised at all the 3+ star reviews. This place baffles me a little bit. It is an awesome space, great front windows, exposed brick, high ceilings, pretty good location (not far from turtle and 10th & willow) BUT there's never a soul in there. It's as if the staff and management could care less if anyone is in there or not and it shows. The times I go in, no one is there which is fine but the music is non existent, the bartender is reading a newspaper or sitting on the opposite side of the bar eating.. And within 10 min I feel uncomfortable or like I'm the bother..see ya.
The space has such potential but it doesn't seem like anyone cares to make an effort. Which is a real shame.
No frills here! If you need a beer and want to be left alone it's great during the week. Francis, the owner, Â has said he owes me a beer about 6 times but I haven't called him on it yet. The crowd can be pretty interesting and the other bartenders are nice even though they might not be the most attentive or might throw your beer out thinking you've left.
Review Source:This is a great place to come hang out. When you arrive and are a new customer, the Bartender, and Owner, Francis introduces himself and then introduces you to every person in the bar. It's a great Neighborhood Bar. Karaoke every thursday night and the sound is the best in town and the Song selection is the largest I have found anywhere.
Review Source:McMahon's is decent local bar but it's just that, decent. Â I wouldn't go as far as calling it a dive though because it's decently clean. Â The beer is cold, and the bartenders are all good people with a decent string of conversation. Â But as others have said, the first few times I was in pricing seemed to vary until they realized I lived in the neighborhood. Â I go here every once and a while but not because I really want to. Â There are better bars within a stones throw of this place that you should go to.
Review Source:I came across McMahon's Ale House while in Hoboken the other day. What prompted me to write this review was how friendly and outgoing the bartender Francis was. Â This Irish bar is cozy, has a great jukebox and a pool table to boot. Had a few pints of Guinness which was exceptionally fresh. I was there on a Friday night and it had a fun friendly crowd that was easy chat with. Definitely enjoyed myself and will be back.
Review Source:WATERED DOWN DRINKS.. no matter how much alcohol we told them to put in our drinks it still tasted like water!! even the soda tasted like shit. the owner seems ok but a little creepy and a lot of locals go to hang out and play pool.i you go to drink there you can not order a mixed drink unless you make them get you a new bottle from the back and show them how to make the drink. horrible. this place sucks in my opinion i would rather walk the block and go to 10th and willow where the drinks taste like they are supposed to
Review Source:Hard not to like the owner Francis. This bar is what we thought it was and sometimes you just need to come here by yourself, down a Guinness, and drown all of your sorrows. Don't worry, misery loves company and you'll see some of the other local regulars. If ever there was a Hoboken bar where you want to just sitdown and drink, maybe shoot pool, and be left alone, this would have to be it.
Review Source:revision time!
to misquote Commando:
"remember when I said I didn't drink during the week?"
"yeah, I remember, you said you had to get up at 5:30 every day"
"I LIED"
I'll let the Jersey trash stay on Washington Street and pay cover charges (who the hell does that?). I know a better joint with decent beers and fun atmosphere, and now you do too.
Jameson shots til you can't see anymore. maybe some Red Label shots too. cause I'm a classy guy, but I don't have all the time in the world. decent variety of beers on hand; no microbrews but decent imports/macros (Smithwick's, Harp).
karaoke is ridiculous. it was D Block's birthday, so pretty much we turned this bar into a private karaoke session. bahahaha. what was it MC5 said? oh, yeah...KICK OUT THE JAMS!
oh my god, I have to be up for work in 4 hours...
Came here on a Wednesday evening for a quick beer(s). It was around 7pm and I was alone, which was alright because the windows were open and the light rain created a great breeze; it seems like it can get a bit stuffy further you are from the front door.
The bartender Francis was extremely nice and hospitable, he poured me a delicious dark & tan, with Bass instead because the Harp was out. There are 4 full bottle of Jameson within 2 feet from any spot the bartender could be standing, which is necessary and welcomed i think.
Overall really great experience some people came in for a pint and chat and then left, while i was there for about 40 minutes, it's that kind of place.
Interested to see what the weekend crowd is like.
For the longest time I was regular here, but alas my schedule did not permit since the start of the summer.
This is hands down my favorite bar in Hoboken, it is far enough out of the way that it is nice and quite, but has its share of regulars. Decent beer selection, and great bar pies.
Prices are reasonable, and it's far out of the way enough that I can escape the usual rush and hurry that is most of Washington. Come by often enough and you get to know the regulars, and it becomes your own version of Cheers.
Ah McMahon's ... how we love thee.
I'm so glad my friends have introduced me to this place. Â First time, went with Mike to meet up with a friend for his birthday. Â I like the feel of this place ... the people that are there regularly are nice. Â The bartenders and owner and awesome. Â The selection of beer is good. However, I couldn't review on a single instance here, as I had not been there for long.
However, I have started frequenting the place as of late (every couple weeks or so) for Thursday Karaoke. Â The selection of music is provided is phenomenal (not quite Duet sized selection for English tracks, but incredible nonetheless). Â Everyone here has a great time, and you should come check it out one of these days.
It is off the beaten path known as Washington Street, but travel off the main street every once in a while. Â You may be surprised at what you find.
