So in my ongoing quest to find food as good as Greektown, I decided to try this place.   I decided to keep it simple and ordered a chicken gyro and the spinach puff things (spanakopita?).  Anyway, the gyro was pretty good.  I've had better (in Greektown), so while I wasn't overly impressed, I did enjoy it.  It was very flavorful, but seemed kind of plain to me...like it was missing something.  The spinach thingys were delicious!  I am mad I only bought two!  Customer service was great and the ladies were all very friendly and helpful...and the prices were great.  I was so mesmerized by the desert counter I didn't get a chance to look up and down the aisles.  Definitely worth another trip.  Next time, I'm going to try the schwarma.

Best pita bread in town and excellent labneh (Arabic sour cream). Fantastic selection of Middle Eastern foodstuffs. Don't leave without getting a dozen of their backed goods.

If you like Middle East type of foods, this is the place for your weekend spot and their authentic items.  If you like olive oil and this is definitely the place to go, but better have a smartphone with you because you will need to google them.  Too many of them.

I like their gyro, falafel, Turkish cofffee...etc  I have not try their dessert yet.... but look good.  You need to come and try it.  Also, I just saw two hotties walk in when I was walking out : ) nice

    HOLY MOTHER OF AWESOME.

Seriously, the cafe food is great (and cheap). Stuff is authentic. And while imported goods aren't quite as economical as the cafe food, this place has a huge variety of products (entire rows for olive oil and balsamic vinegar). If it's in your budget to indulge in really good, imported stuff, then go here. If you just want a quick bite from a cafe, go here.

Short of Sahadi's on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn,  this is the best grocery  of this type I have shopped in.   This place keeps us from going insane because of the white bread supermarkets in the area.

The freshly-baked pita bread alone is worth five stars.  That is one of my regular items in addition to their delicious hummus, tabouleh, and majedera.  Their spice selection is incredible and reasonably-priced too.

We went there for their falafel platter, and we weren't disappointed!  The falafel was hot and crispy and the pita bread was warm and fluffy.  The platter also included some tahini for dipping and some pickled vegetables.  While you're waiting for the food, you can browse their well-stocked market.  We plan on going back soon and trying something else on the menu.   Highly recommended!

BEST HUMMUS EVER!  Best baklava, too, and great prices for everything.  The cafe and bakery has never disappointed--I love this place!!  It's one of the reasons I still live in Alexandria...

This place is a gem twofold.  First, they have a great selection of hard to find Mediterranean groceries--Greek, Arab, Turkish, Italian, North African spices, canned goods, cheeses, meats, etc.  Looking for dried limes and pomegranate syrup?  Maybe some Cypriot haloumi cheese or Bulgarian feta?  And around the holidays, the balkava is absolutely out of control delicious.  And the olives...

If that's not enough, they have a modest menu at a counter in the back corner with a nice wood-fired style oven (I think it's actually fueled with gas, but that doesn't detract judging by the bread coming out of it).  I haven't ordered extensively from the menu, but that's basically because the chicken shwarma is so good I don't stray from it.  The chicken itself is moist and delicious, bathed in a tangy tahini sauce, fresh parsley and chopped onion, then wrapped in a fresh pita.  There's also a flatbread with zatar on it that's fantastic. And the hummus--oh the hummus.  The service is slow, but that's just because they make each item fresh.  I almost hate posting this on Yelp because I fear I'll have to wait even longer when you people start going there.  But I share because it's just so good.  The people who work here are also very nice.

I love this place.  I go once a week to stock up on hommos, falafel, tabouli, olives, and tea.  It's all delicious and freshly made.  Except for salt, NO preservatives in the in-house prepared food.  I usually get something sweet too, there is always a large variety of freshly baked goods.  Of course the baklava is wonderful.  The shelves are stocked with mediterranean and international goods.  They have the most extensive oil, vinegar, and olive section I have seen locally.  There is always beautiful classical music playing on the speakers, and the staff is helpful.  It's a wonderful small business that produces healthy delicious food.

My advise is to look at the expiration date on the packed stuffed food in freezer. Sometimes it is just over dated and still sitting there. Also this place needs to be renovated and the eating area is old and dirty and tables just next to the restrooms.

As for their food sometimes it tastes old. Spinach pies edges is dry and looks like been sitting in fridge for few days.

I never tried their sandwiches because it was never recommended to me. Anyway, I saw how it looks and it is far from real Lebanese kebab etc sandwiches. Even their tabole has nothing to do with it. The food is being prepared by Moroccans that have no experience in Lebanese food noting that the Moroccan cuisine has nothing to do with the Lebanese cuisine.

If you want to eat a real authentic sandwiches I recommend you drop med gourmet in Franconia, Nayla's in Geogetown, Layla's in Old town Alexandria or Byblos in Connecticut a visit.

I give thumbs up to the meat and cheese pies!!

Sometimes the service is slow and the line is long.

Prices are affordable and convenient. This place is cheaper than other med markets I have been to and that what makes me stop by tho.

One time I bought an expired chocolate bar and when I wanted to return the owner was kind of annoyed. For me coming from an Arab country it does not mean it is okay for me to eat expired stuff! Her only answer for me was if I was back home I would have just eaten that chocolate bar and Expired chocolate is still good to eat after few months!! Well I am sorry to tell you that you are so wrong and wherever I come from you are not supposed to offer that. I could have easily reported this place for spotting in so many occasions expired food in fridges or on shelves.

Also, they do catering and I have been to a party where food was catered from there. Their food was a disappointment. It is just sad that people get fooled by eating a crappy lebanese food from there thinking it is the best they have ever had.

Just happened upon this place while I was waiting for my car in the shop down the street.  This place is amazing.  I really went in just to get a quick bite to eat, but I found myself instead walking up and down the aisles in market to see what they had.  They have some great deals on spices, as well as a good variety of hard to find items that are a food nerd's dream.

After wasting some time in the aisles, my stomach started rumbling again, so I checked out the food offerings.  I was drawn to part of hte deli where all the fresh wrapped samosas were available, and I settled on a couple of different beef samosas and a chickpea samosa.  The chickpea one was decent, but the beef samosas were divine.  Great seasoning and perfect crust.

After having my fill, I went back into the aisles to check out more of the selection.  I ended up not buying anything that day, but I'll stop back through at some point... after I find a few recipes that I'd like to try out.

I love this place. Momisa behind the counter is fabulous at suggesting pastries or food to go.  The homemade baklava is delicate, flavorful, crisp and just plain pretty.
They carry my favorite coffees, and teas. The spice section is a cook's dream and the food you can eat there is really wonderful.
The only down side I have ever experienced there is a gal who was really negative with her kids while she ate at a table but that is not MBC's problem.
If you are stuck for ideas for dinner and are bored with your same old same old- go to MBC.  You will be inspired no matter what type of cuisine you like. The cheeses, fresh flat breads and rice and bean selection will make you feel passionate and excited about food again.  You can even get a Turkish coffee to go!

What a find! We stumbled on this place on a trip to Home Depot. Had a wonderful lunch and went back the next day!

Try the kibbeh--we also enjoyed chicken shawarma and zatar. Great cheap place for a quick bite...a little cramped at the tables, but it only adds to the atmosphere.

Some great deals on spices, olive oils, vinegars and other odds and ends--including fresh baked pita bread. If I lived in Alexandria, this place would be a regular stop!

This grocery deli has a wide variety of items at pretty good prices.  Someone else wrote that they have a little bit of everything and that is true!  From delicious to downright weird, they really do have everything in that little space.  You could get by shopping only at this store.

I ended up focused on extensive array of baklava and other sweets. Amazing!  Best selection in town.

This store has a little of everything, think of it as a mid size Mediterranean 7-11 and food market.  You'll find plenty of choices in oils, spices, and canned goods.  In fact there's whole aisles dedicated to oils and spices.  You can always find unique food items here.

In the back there's a restaurant area where they cook up fresh sandwiches and soups.  Try the swatha (sp?) wrap, it's a traditional middle eastern wrap of meat and spice in a thick bread wrapping.  Inside you'll also find a bakery with dozens and dozens of goods from potato cakes to the sweetest of desserts.

The prices are pretty good for being a small store.  For instance there's a coconut water drink I love and this place sells it for $1.59, the 7-11 down the street sells it for $1.69.  It's only ten cents but you get my point.  My only negative about this place is the service.  Often times I wait longer in line than I do browsing the store.  So, if you're ever in a hurry don't come here!  But, this store is worth at least one visit to check out the variety of foods.

I've been here quite a few times and I always like it because they have a ton of stuff that is not in your regular market and I like checking it out. FYI, the prices for cheese seem to be a few buck cheaper than other stores. There is also a cafe and bakery.

The food from the cafe is good but it's slightly awkward ordering in that where you order is hidden in the back, there is no real menu displayed - you have to ask for it, the menu descriptions aren't great so when you ask about an item the explanation doesn't usually clarify too well.

I got some stuff at the bakery for the first time a few days ago...I got a variety of dessert treats. I'm not Mediterranean so I can't vouch for the authenticity and accuracy of taste but they varied in deliciousness and there are a few which I wouldn't get again. They all look awesome in the display case though. Lots of baklava flavors to choose from.

It's a cool store. Check it out.

I love the Mediterranean Bakery & Cafe. I didn't realize how many different types of baklava there could be! Walnut, pistachio, almond logs etc. All of the bakery items are delicious (e.g. cakes, cookies eclairs)!

Also, they carry a lot of imported teas and jams/chocolate from Europe and the Middle East (e.g. Turkish "Nutella", PG Tips tea etc.) They carry PG Tips' loose tea, which is difficult to find in the U.S.; LOVE THAT!

Sometimes I order sandwiches from the deli, and they are great as well (approx. 6$ for a shawarma + hummus/chips). VERY reasonable!

This place is right nearby so I pay an occasional visit to find some grocery items that are not easily found in your average grocery store. The spice and hot sauce selections alone make the trip worth it.

I'll have to agree on the comments about the service by Henry S. The people are a little surly and could be more pleasant.

Mediterranean Bakery & Cafe is pretty good for getting groceries and items that you can't find in your typical grocery store.  I particularly like the create your own soup mixes they have here.  They also have an impressive selection of cheeses and well, other mediterranean items.  The dessert section is extensive and unique.

There is a fresh bakery and an area where they make sandwiches and other lunch items.  These I have not tried so I can't judge it... I might go back to give it a try because I'm curious.

I don't live too close and probably wouldn't go out of my way unless I was really in need of a certain ingredient.  Still if you're in the area it's worth the stop!!

This place is awesome!  I didn't try any of the fresh sandwiches so I can't comment on that, but as many other reviewers have said, if you're looking for special ingredients, this is the place to go to.  I spent about 10 minutes looking just at the various types of curries they have.

They have a huge selection of olive oil and vinegar - an entire row of an aisle.  I was also really impressed by their jam selection.  They have tons of jam from all over the world.

I'm not in this neighborhood often and I didn't end up buying anything yesterday, but I know where to head to if I'm ever planning on cooking some Mediterranean food.

    Where did the time go?

Did I leave it in the entire aisle of Balsamic vinegar and olive oil?
Maybe I lost 5 minutes when I turned around there and was mesmerized by the jars of olives and pickled items. Who knew there were so many chutneys.

Did I grow dizzy from the aroma of all the spices as I gaped at the case of cheeses? Maybe the shock from the assortment of hot sauce caused temporary amnesia.

Oh look more neat stuff! Korma, tikka, masala, boxes I can't read, sauces I only can ponder the purpose off.

Geeze - where did the time go?

TEA!!! Pastries! Italian Torrone that I haven't seen since I was a child.

There's no in and out here, no matter how determined. If you suffer from Market ADD like I do you'll love it. Come, lose yourself in the selection as you wander the aisles.

What did I come in here for again?

We go there once in blue moon for the pita bread, which is fresh and good.  It's only good the first day, then it gets stale.  After a few days, the mold sets in.  I don't know why people are crazy about this place.  It looks dark, dusty and dirty.  They need to remodel the place so it looks clean and fresh.  The baklava looks and tastes good, but after 2 pieces that's good enough.  It is way too overpriced.  Once every 2 years I guess is ok.

The cafe's food looked good at first, but I couldn't even finish my platter.  Not a fan, and we'll never go back for the food.

I used to live in the historically Greek neighborhood of Astoria in Queens, NYC, and had pretty much given up on finding a place here that could measure up to the food in my old 'hood. But then, thanks to Yelp, I discovered MB&C. The stuffed grape leaves (vegetarian ones--haven't tried the meat yet) are the best I've ever had. Just the right amount of citrusy/lemony flair and clearly fresh because the rice is nice and tender rather than hard. Also, you can tell they've made sure to remove the hard veins in the leaves. They're nice and tender too.

The baklava is also exceptional. The bakery sells it in rolls, not triangles, packed into an aluminum tray. There are probably about 28 baklava to a tray and my boyfriend and I like them so much that we meticulously count how much the other has eaten to make sure we split the tray exactly. (My boyfriend was a baklava anti-fan before tasting the deliciousness from MB&C.) The falafel sandwiches and shwarma here are terrific too, as is their rather lemony hummus.

Their non-prepared merchandise includes all kinds of olive oils, dried fruits and nuts, spices, beans, and a large assortment of hot sauces with amusing (some might say inappropriate) labels. Anything you might need to prepare a delicious Mediterranean meal of your own, although there's really no need since the prepared food here is so good and affordable.

I wish this place was closer to our apartment or a metro stop. I haven't found an equivalent in DC. (If there is, can someone please enlighten me?)

Lunch here during the week inspired me to go home and later that night brush up on my knowledge of the countries that make up the Mediterranean region. It takes a pretty good sandwich to do that.

This little store/cafe is great. I had a falafel sandwich for $4.95, served with humus and pita chips. I think that is a great value for lunch. What makes it such a value is the satisfaction I got from eating this perfect sandwich.

They stuff the sandwich with falafel, tahina?, what looked like parsley and several other pickled chopped/minced veges and wrap it tight like a burrito. It keeps everything together, and isn't as messy as a typical pita with everything falling out after every bite.

The falafel is also cooked perfectly, actually even seemed juicy, which I normally don't associate with falafel. The tahina, maybe tzatziki, was very lemony which gave you a nice citrusy aftertaste. Probably some of the best falafel I have ever had, yet different all the same.

I deducted a star for the cafe seating section...a little dirty and run down.

It's likely this place will have the random seasonings and spices you'll need for some exotic recipes at a reasonable price.  I found a jar of fragrant and still fresh cardamom for about $4 when this spice usually retails for over $11 at your usual grocery store if they even have it.  Bakery selections look enticing but I've never sampled them.

They have an extensive selection of hot sauces with amusing names perfect for gag gifts.

Their hummus is delicious...you can taste hints of lemon juice.  Their sandwiches are tasty but usually take a few minutes to prepare.  Wandering around the store fruit will definitely minimize your wait. :)

A hidden gem within a strip mall in the west end area and one of my favorite places.

I make weekly trips to stock up on hummus, garlic pita chips and pita bread--plus an occasional lunch.  I can also kill some serious time in the spice and olive oil aisles---a very extensive/great selection.

Three people ate well and had bottled water for $17, WOW!!!  You can find everything from kinder toys to baked goods there (the cream puff is to die for).   It's a hole in the wall, but cheap and super delicious!  Unbelievable baked goods, fresh everything, and a riotus selection of hot sauces.

Delish honey combs, and everything you can imagine.

It's been a few months since I've been to this area, but everytime, without fail, I stop to the Mediterranean Bakery. Not only they have a great pastry shop, but the hot food is awesome. I have tried the Shish Tak-Wuk (sp?) It compares to the best one I had in Montreal...go figure.. all hot items have a small side of hummus with toasted pita bread... the bread is very crunchy. I wonder if you can get the pita not toasted. I have had the chicken swarma too...yummm
Try the baklava...assorted meat pastries ... great place!  Check out the olive oil..cold cuts, cheeses...etc...

Based on the reviews and based on the fact that I could finally go to a lunch of MY choosing since I was alone, I went to this lovely strip mall and finally tried this place.

I got the shwarma sandwich. It comes with pita chips and hummus, all for the low price of $5.27. It was fast, the beef had lots of great flavor and the hummus was yum. The employee was VERY nice and helpful, so it was an all-around good experience.

I loved the look of the bakery section. It took everything out of me NOT to buy something. I can't eat sweets right now (stupid diet), but I know the hubs would have a field day. I plan to bring him this weekend.

I can't believe I never walked inside this place even when I lived in Alexandria and went to the Home Depot there. HAHAAH.

    I'll be back :)

This is a great place to stock up on middle eastern foods.  The quality and selection are very good, plus you don't get completely scammed like you might at Safeway for a small vial of cumin.  Top products imho:

    1) Feta cheese selection (Bulgarian, domestic, greek)
    2) Pita bread
    3) Olive selection
    4) cream filled pastries

I would love nothing more than to have a grocery store warrant the 5 star "Woohoo! As good as it gets!", but when I shop, I always have to stop at roughly 5 different places in a single run, this place being one of them.

They've got a great selection of Mediterranean hard-to-finds. Great selection of yogurts n' cheeses right across from their great and phenomenally low priced spices. Tons of hot sauces to choose from (Attention Neal E.)! Everything from a mild cayenne to a habenero suppository, they got it. If you want good pita, pita chips, olives, tea, oils, falafel, dolmades, feta, curry, chutney, nuts, seeds, pastries, cookware, hell - even if you need a hookah, give them a visit.

They've even got a little dining area where you can indulge in their little cafe's specialties. As tiny as this place is, they sure do have an eclectic selection of Mediterranean goods. They are one of our unique little gems, we should feel fortunate to have them.

Meat pies; cheese and tomato pies
Shish tawook (chicken with peppers wrapped in homemade pita bread)
Desserts (Lots of different types of baklava)
Olive oil (Over a hundred different kinds)
Spices (Many indian and middle eastern spices you can not find other places

    4.5 stars.

The Mediterranean Bakery is an awesome place to shop *and* eat, with prices that are really -really- reasonable.  This is one my favorite places in Alexandria.

In the deli case, you can select from any number of house-made goodies.  Pick up their dolmades -- I like the Turkish vegetarian ones because they're plump, packed with flavor, and juicy, but husband loves the ground beef ones just warmed through.  Try some baba ganoush, regular or fire roasted, mmmm.  I think their hummus is very good -- a little runnier than I like, and very lemony, but on the whole quite enjoyable. They make great homemade pita chips -- plain, garlic, and za'atar -- and have a wide selection of flat breads, olive oils, hot sauces, and other ethnic foods.  There's a deli case where you can pick up all kinds of olives, labneh pies, spanikopita, baklava, and other homemade pastries.  I buy all my spices here at Mediterranean Bakery, because they have a huge selection at prices that beat any grocery store.

At the back of the store is an unassuming little kitchen that serves great, authentic Mediterranean food for CHEAP.  Husband and I love to split a couple of their pita pizzas (my favorite is the kishk, so delicious I usually end up boxing husband out for the last piece) with unusual and exotic toppings -- turmeric, sesame, tahini, sumac, etc -- and their fettoush or Greek salad.  Also great is their falafel: really light and incredibly flavorful, not too dense or heavy.  If you order the platter, as opposed to the sandwich, it comes with toppings, tahini, and pita.  Husband really likes the kibbeh, too, meaty and tasty and not too dense.

Service can be slow, and the the dining area is cramped, very basic (think food court, but smaller), and sometimes not the cleanest, but the food, prices, and selection are worth a visit.

I happened to reach here when I couldn't find parking in D.C (don't ask me how)- what a find! It's located in a run of the mill strip mall, but the stuff inside is anything but that. Apart from the regular stuff (falafels, babaghanough etc) they have these awesome lebanese pies. The spinach with feta cheese one was heavenly. Very authentic stuff!

The grocery store was nice too- cheeses, olives, pita et all. Its quite a trek from my place, but I'll be there again.

This place is amazing!  While I was having the oil changed at the Nissan dealer down the street, I wandered in here to check things out.  What a wonderful find!

This store had all kinds of tasty treats - a deli section with made to order sandwiches, a bakery with fresh breads and delectable looking sweets, rows of olive oils and other Mediterranean grocery items.  I spent a lot of time in here wandering through the aisles and trying to figure out how I wasn't going to spend a fortune in here on Pide bread and feta cheese (as well as some really nice looking olive oils and olives).  I cannot wait to come back here and buy gifts for friends!

For a little treat, I got myself some of the baklava.  It was so sweet and flaky and yummy.  I should have gotten more because I could have eaten more.

I can't wait to come back here with a shopping list and try some more of the baked goods.  And the trip back here will occur very soon.

excellent take out or eat in in my 'hood, what could be more bliss?   The order may be slow at times, but that's because they are usually crowded and make your food, they don't reheat it.   I love the Shish Kabob(beef), Shish Tawook(chicken) and Hummos sandwiches. All come with a side of Hummos and Pita Chips(too bad not regular pita, oh well)

It's also a Bakery so you can buy warm FRESH white or whole Pita.

The rest of the store is basicaly a tour of the world, from Canolli's to 500 Hot Sauces, Halva(try it, it's awesome sesame sweets), to Baklava, Green Tea to Hearts of Palm(Ahhh, memories of Costa Rica) and Artichoke hearts.  Lots of other kitchen items to browse over while you wait for your order..even some Hookas for purchase. You smoke it, you buy it.
