What an amazing Mellow Mushroom. Â This is probably the best one I have been to. Â Located right in downtown Asheville this Mellow Mushroom has a HUGE outdoor patio and interior restaurant. Â
Decorated in super funky style. Â There is a huge assortment of art. Â We had the pizza here and one of many great beers. Â Service was outstanding and we will definitely be back!!
Tourist central. One of the worst places to go in Asheville. They never fail to give the worst and slowest service of any Asheville restaurant. They don't refill your drinks. They're rude. They smell terrible. they try to sneak automatic gratuity on your checks too, despite it all. Locals like myself wish this place would go out of business so something decent could go there instead. Seriously, don't go here.
Review Source:This was our first trip to Asheville, and a first at Mellow Mushroom. Â It won't be the last!
I love their outdoor patio - the no smoking rule is appreciated, and this is the perfect place to relax, enjoy outside dining, and dine on the best pizza I've ever had (and I've had a lot of pizza!).
The first pizza we ordered was the Holy Shitake, and it couldn't have a better name. Â From first bite, the flavors were balanced and it was a party for my mouth!!
Our server was helpful, polite, and answered all our questions about the pizza (molasses in the crust) to Asheville (perfect place to live). Â
Though we were only in town a week, we liked this place so much we went twice. Â I'm definitely looking forward to moving to Asheville and being close to Mellow Mushroom!
Best pizza restaurant ever. Best restaurant chain ever. Delicious toppings, perfect crust, tangy think tomate sauce is kind of pasty. Its great. Calzones too. Great beer menu and friendly service. Cool atmosphere, I wanted to eat outside but my date wasn't having it. Next time! I will always visit this place when in the Asheville area. I was with my husband but could imagine it being a really fun casual date spot too for people out and about.
Review Source:Another consistant Mellow Mushroom trip. Â We actually popped in here twice we like it so much! Â That and the fact it's a great spot to absorb some libations with greasy pizza late night.
Of course the food is good but I like it for the beer, the beer! Â The only off putting part of this one is the fact that there are so many other selections to be had all within walking distance. Â That being said, I still like trying new beers and the selection here is hard to beat.
Nice, polite and attentive staff increase my comfort factor and before long you've wasted an hour or more here. Â That's what you want though. Â A chill, laid back atmosphere and good food/drinks on tap. Â You'll find that here for sure.
I'm a fan. Â It's not where I go when I want a greasy slice of new york style pizza, but that being said, their chewy and flavorful pizza crust is always cooked well. Â The sauces are great - Â we always get something non-traditional, like the buffalo wing pizza. Â The beer selection can't be beat, and the place is pr
Review Source:No trip to Ashevile is complete without going to Mellow Mushroom. Â My family and I love the cheesey bread appetizer. Â The beer selection is great and you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Â The atmosphere is laid back and super casual with hippies galore. Â Love this place! Â It's our favorite location of Mellow Mushroom.
Review Source:Friends who are longtime residents of the Asheville/Greenville area used the excuse to pick me up from the airport to visit The Mellow Mushroom. Mind you, obtaining my consent for a stop before we drove back to Greenville wasn't very difficult. All they had to do was promise me a laidback experience as good as smoking a joint without the marijuana and a superb Caprese sandwich stuffed by the ripest tomatoes and moist mozzarella on the southeastern seaboard.
The Mushroom lives up to its name, even when we appeared shortly into the dinnertime rush. My guy friend has long frequented the Mellow Mushroom chain and worked there for a time, so he knew his stuff towards what to steer me towards and away from. He's also a practicing vegan so our restaurant choice was friendly to his dietary needs and preferences. Though gluten-free and vegan/vegetarian options are becoming mainstream throughout the US, The Mellow Mushroom has long specialized in pizzas, sandwiches, and other entrees that avoid meat, wheat or animal products. Ask away if you have any questions.
I pretty much had my heart set on some kind of basil, tomato, and mozzarella sandwich. The menu did not disappoint for a boatload of tasty-sounding options that tried to pry me from my main choice. The pizzas are especially popular and we three split one between us in addition to my sandwich. Hey, it's a two hour trip to Greenville and I spent several hours between airports and on a budget flight, snacks were pretty much a guaranteed necessity. They ended up getting a particularly unusual pizza that involved more veggies and unusual ingredients for me to follow, so I gave up after "the spicy sauce" and other secret code between former employee and current one. Maybe they stuck walnuts, pralines, bechamel sauce, and crawfish in there. I'm not entirely sure.
What came out was quite lovely. I really tend to judge pizza by the dough and the MM's consistency is just right. Crunchy and chewy, not too thick or that awful cracker-slab style popularized as thin crust and really shorthand for 'baked too long with too little moisture.' If I wanted to eat my pizza on Wasa bread, I would. I could sing the praises of the pizza after a hungry flight, and once I downed a slice, it was time to turn to my Mediterranean sandwich. There's something about fresh-baked bread and balsamic vinaigrette that absolutely thrills in combination with mozzarella cheese. That sandwich was a goner the instant I got my hands on it. The way the liquid just seeped in was delightful. Adding a variety of flavourful herbs and I enjoyed something better than the typical pesto slathered on a bun.
The restaurant has a feel of a hippie bar, without question, the sort of place where someone might shoot the breeze for a couple of hours. It's what the hipster hippie colony seems to have morphed into. As such, the pace of things is a lot slower than you might expect from a restaurant. The unhurried pace can be at odds with a large crowd collecting for dinner. We sat down and received our drinks in a reasonable period of time, but the servers take their sweet time about coming through with orders. Ours was good, probably in part because my friend still had recognition there, but the comment that the hippy vibe affects the staff is definitely true. I think there are a few souls who walk around with their heads in the clouds.
The food definitely warrants 3.5 stars. It's a solid choice and that pizza definitely sang to the soul. I like the breadth of the menu and the many appetizing choices I had. The service on the other hand was pretty lackluster for dinner time. I'd been trapped in a metal tube thrown at 400 mph through the air, so I wasn't in a rush. However, we waited an hour for our pizza and sandwich, though we spent much of that catching up.
72 beers on draft...did I die and go to craft beer heaven! And the pizza? So many wacky delicious choices! We had shrimp, sausage and bleu cheese....who would have thought that this was a delicious pizza combo!
This place is as MELLOW as you get. I'm pretty positive that I was the only person there who has never smoked pot!
I have a love hate relationship with Mellow Mushroom. I think their food is great (I'll get to this later) but there's something about this place that just irritates me. It may be the fact that sometimes it smells like sour milk inside the restaurant or it might be the "gimmicky" vibe I get when I'm there. Our friends who pass through town always want to eat here so we probably visit this place every other month or so.
I don't know. I think it's mainly due to the people that this place attracts, lots of tourists and lots of young "trying too hard" weirdos trying to find their weird place in this world. Now let me explain myself, I live in Asheville, and have for a long time. I am used to seeing and meeting weird people and that's a big reason why I enjoy this city. But something about the people that visit Mellow Mushroom is especially weird...almost like weirdos in training. It seems like they are making it a point to be extra weird so other people know they're weird. Most weird people are just weird by nature...that's how they are. Who would make it a point to try and act weird, just for the sake of being weird? Mellow Mushroom patrons, that's who.
I'm a multi-tasker in that not only have I left you a useful review but I've also turned this into a drinking game. So take a shot every time I say weird.
Anyway, the pizza is really good. The crust is the best part. Sometimes I eat it backwards like the old Pizza Hut commercials and then people look at me like I'M the weirdo. Go figure. The greek salad is also good and they have a decent beer selection with some good specials.
Service has never been great, It's always been efficient, just not overly friendly. I just assume all the waitstaff is stoned. I think that's one of the job requirements. There's also been two occasions where they screwed up the pizza and gave us a discount on our check.
I wouldn't recommend this place to people visiting Asheville. There are so many great locally owned pizza places around town, try one of those first. However, if you're a local I would definitely try it out. If you're like me and eat pizza weekly, it's nice to switch it up a bit.
I usually give 3-5 star reviews if the food is good. Â But I can't even bring myself to be that nice because of the absolutely awful service.. Good pizza. But not worth dealing with the parking and so typical of the entitled/(i'm better than you because i don't bathe and I shouldn't have to work for a living but i still need to buy weed) crowd that have flocked to Asheville. Â I wouldn't give it one star if it had happened only once but it's been a theme almost every time I've eaten there. Â Get take out if you're really craving pizza with good crust otherwise find a restaurant where the employees bathe and treat you like they are happy they have a job.
Review Source:This is my 3rd time at a mellow mushroom and they consistently serve up delicious pizza. What really wins me over is the variety of specialty pizzas offered. They are not afraid to be creative here. I forget the name, but the one with the pesto swirl is awesome. The crust on all their pizzas is so yummy, and that is my favorite part!
Review Source:Great food as always, but terrible service. The table beside us waited 20 minutes before being greeted by the server and another table begged him to take their order, because they had to be somewhere. Keep in mind this was at 4pm on a weekday. There is no reason for this type of service.
Review Source:I usually love the mellow mushroom but this one was not one of my better experiences. Â The service was slow and unfriendly. Â The patio area is nice but where we were sitting their were pigeons and food on the floor. Â The food was okay, we got the Philosophers pizza, was not my favorite.
Review Source:Discovered this lovely gem back in March 2011. Â Walked through the door and was pleasantly surprised to find a wacky (but in a great way) decorated place. Â Bar has a lovely selection of beers and the pizza was great. Â Like the ability that the menu allows you to create your own salad with a great selection of ingredients to chose from. Â Being from Chicago, my first thought was that I was in a Chicago bar in the Bucktown/Wicker Park area. Â Very friendly staff and the locals (at the bar) are extremely friendly and welcoming. Â Spent a lovely night there discussing politics, religion, etc while having great food and drinks...and all without any fighting. Â
The only negative point I could make is that state law does not allow them (or anyone else) to sell a bottle of wine to a single drinker. Â I am use to getting a bottle of wine because price-wise it is more cost effective than buying single glasses. That being said, Mellow Mushroom prices by the glass even out to the price of a bottle of wine, which is surprising as I assume restaurants/bars are going to price things to realize a profit. Â Definitely our go to place when we are in town.
When in Asheville one of our pastimes is playing "hippie or hipster" -- there seems to be an endless supply of both and I don't envy restaurant managers who have to craft a working staff from some of the raw material available here. Â
But after our evening at the MM, we decided that there needs to be a separate category for the smart, funky, laid-back servers that seem to populate the better places to eat in town. Â
We are semi-regulars at the Mushrooms in Raleigh and Durham and have visited others in the region, but the Asheville location has something special. Â The huge open main room is a feast for the senses; our group of 8 was seated in one of the adjunct sections which was less dazzling but quieter. Â Our server had great instincts and managed to keep both the adults (unprompted beer samples!) and the kids (comp Shirley Temples when he noticed them ogling one going by) smiling. Â In fact every staff member we came in contact with had that effortlessly competent I-actually-like-my job vibe going (in spite of a full house and the AC struggling to keep up with 95-degree heat outside).
Food and drink were top notch -- we already like MM pizza and this was the best version of it we've had. Â
Top kudos to this place.
Now this place rocks! I love the throw back sixties motif! The meat lovers pizza is my favorite. I always sit outside and watch the college kids as they strut their stuff. It is a great eating place! Kid friendly and the prices are reasonable. I would suggest that any Pizza lover visiting Asheville at least stop in once!
Review Source:My cousin and I stopped at the Mellow Mushroom on a recommendation from his sister. Â It was during a cross country drive (SF to Phila) and after a 800 mile driving day. Â
We had the Philsopher's pizza and a couple of local brews. It was great! Â I felt the menu was stupendous with lots of nods to local cuisines and beverages (always a plus). Â Lots of cool decor and vibes. Â
After 800 miles, it was quite easily the best beer of my life and the best piece of pizza. Â We sat in the sun for a few minutes (sitting outside if the best), basked in the glow of Asheville and our totally rockin' server, and then continued up I-81. Â Fun stop!!
I'd previously dined here in other locations (SC), so I was already a fan. Pizza is great, although I usually get the calzones, which are wonderful, but HUGE. I am also a fan of their salads and love the Capri sandwich.
This is a fun place to hang out, but service can be hit/miss in terms of slow waitstaff. Love sitting outside & it's in a nice location downtown. Good selection of beers on tap.
As an out of towner who is surrounded by Chicago style pizza on a daily basis, I have to say I was incredibly surprised by Mellow Mushroom.
When you walk in you are immediately welcomed by a warm, friendly hostess. The atmosphere is really chill and we were waited on promptly. My husband wanted to watch a football game and they happily changed the TV at our request. We were there on a chilly Sunday afternoon, so we can't speak to the atmosphere when it's crowded, but what we experienced was fast, friendly service.
The appetizers we ordered were pretty good, but the best part of the experience was by far the pizza. I've never had such a tasty crust. It's garlic, butter and parmesan at it's finest. It's a thin crust, but not like NY style, and for someone who normally dips her pizza crust in sauce or salad dressing to spice it up, that wasn't necessary here - the crust is so flavorful all on it's own, dipping would just ruin it.
If you're in Asheville and want pizza, THIS is your place!
This was the best Mellow Mushroom I have been to yet! The food preparation was top! Real chunks of garlic on the garlic bread. We got a vegan style Mellowterranean and it was awesome incarnate.
Unlike the other MM places I have been they use Toffuti style cheese instead of Dyia. It really works on their pizza. Also they know what they're doing when it comes to tempeh. All around our food was above par.
The atmosphere was pretty open and pretty cramped, which makes sense as it was Saturday. There were lot's of people there, however the wait time was not long and the other patrons made with light banter to add to the feel of the place.
This was my first time going to a Mellow Mushroom and I had heard races about it. We got the House Special pizza based on various recommendations. To my dismay, it was just okay. The toppings and crust were good, but I thought the sauce was very bland.
The highlight of the night was the beer, not the pizza. They have a wide selection and even had a brew called Rasputin. My friend was ecstatic to see it on the menu since it's a rare find in these parts and even rarer on draft.
The decor of the place is pretty cool, they have a lot vintage props such a gas pumps that give the place character. I recommend sitting outdoors if the weather permits.
Generally speaking, I like my pizza NY-style...thinner crust with a keep-it-simple-stupid attitude when it comes to toppings. Â Though every now & again I crave an entire-loaf-of-bread Chicago style pizza loaded with the entirety of a Whole Foods produce section. Â Mellow Mushroom generally hits a nice medium between the two styles.
The Asheville location was my first Mellow Mushroom experience. Â It was a pepperoni with extra cheese, and it hit the spot. Â Even though Mellow Mushroom is a chain, each location is ever-so-slightly different. Â What I like about the Asheville location in particular is the outside seating section. Â Good pizza + good beer + shaded outdoor seating = a combination near impossible to argue with.
Just don't come here in the middle of a summer day...the stench of hippie B.O. is enough to ruin your appetite...but that's hardly the restaurant's fault.
This is the 4th Mellow Mushroom I've visited.
Those GaTech engineers got it right when they thought up the concept for this franchise.
Great za, it's good to know you can visit any other franchise and find the same quality and consistency.
This location is awesome, right on the corner in downtown Freak City and walking distance to....well... everywhere.
Sit outside, they have a great large covered gazebo like structure on the patio that shades from the sun. There are many other outside tables and plenty of room on the inside.
A nice hippie vibe; Â wear your tye dye and feel right at home!
Props to Abram, he's been working there eight years and can tell you the history of the location and it's links to an old converted texaco station.
Go inside and check out the colorful hand painted mural.
Slightly apathetic hostess showed us to our table. A/C is either non-existent or wasn't working, which is a good excuse to get a local beer or some sweet tea. The atmosphere is fun, though.
The pizza and hoagies were tasty. We had one main problem- after asking the waitress if house salads had carrots, being told they didn't, and saying good because of an allergy to them, my friend got his salad with carrots all over it!
I've been to the Mellow Mushroom several times while visiting Asheville.. it has become somewhat of a staple restaurant to visit- and I'm coming from the mecca of pizza, not to mention somewhat of a pizza snob, so that's saying a lot. Â The food is really good, especially the calzones. Â The last time I was there, I ordered one with pesto and artichoke hearts. Â Their menu hosts a slew of different fillings, on top of an excellent beer selection.
Another plus for MM- While in desperate search for a meal after a long car ride into town, we came to realize there wasn't much time for us to get to one of the remaining restaurants open. Â They let us in at 10:55pm, five minutes before they closed down for the night, and allowed us to order and enjoy our meal. Â Classy.
Now this place has a really trippy decor, awesome pizza, and a great beer selection.
Walking into the joint is like walking into a Lewis Carol-induced acid trip with a massive case of the munchies.
Get the Kozmic Karma, Magical Mystery Tour, or if they still have it the Shroom OD. Â Yes, these are all veggie pizzas. Â I am a die-hard carnivore and I can tell you these rock!
This place is fun and tasty!
Yay! I'm a fan...in the words of Yelpish.
Not only is the building one of the coolest locations in downtown (the former location of Stone Soup, may it rest in peace), but it is--in my opinion--the best location of all the Mellow Mushrooms. In no way does this place feel like a chain restaurant. The interior is unique to the Asheville area and the beer and staff are found nowhere else. The vibe here is as chill and relaxed as an eating establishment this side of San Francisco can get.
There isn't anything on the menu that isn't worth a try. Their pizza is perfect. Every ingredient--sauce, toppings, dough...all of it is superb. Sitting outside on a cool summer night is about as great as it gets in downtown Asheville. This is one of the few places where there is true outdoor seating in downtown...so take full advantage of it.
I've been coming here since they first opened...and the place has grown in character...it's definitely getting better with age.
If there is a wait, get on the list and wait...I promise that you will not be disappointed with what you will get.
The Mellow Mushroom is always fun and the food is great. While most people probably go there for the pizza or calzones, definitely don't ignore the hoagies. I developed a minor dependency on the wonderfully-seasoned tempeh hoagie after only one tasting. For an appetizer, the pretzels with mustard dip are plentiful and fun to eat, and the bruschetta is surprisingly good.
Don't go to the Mushroom if you don't have some time to stay a while, because the friendly staff is in no kind of hurry. There's enough to look at in the decor inside and out that you will enjoy your wait. And the full bar helps, too. They make a wonderful tequila sunrise. The Mellow Mushroom is a great place to be a tourist, or to take out-of-town guests who aren't on a diet and whose wallets are rather fat (this is NOT cheap food).
This isn't the place to have a romantic date- try Marco's if you want to combine pizza and romance. This is also not a place to be morose at the bar. The Mushroom is a place to be silly, play some trivia, and have fun. So go have a good time.
For a chain, I am super impressed. Packed but the wait went quickly. The beer list is impressive and if you are into the local brew stiff, this place is for you. The ingredients are all fresh and the pizza and salads were truly very good. The outside seating area is well located on Broadway, making it a prime spot for people watching.
We ordered the house special, and if you are a carnivore, you are sure to be happy. I wish I had had more room to order the pesto pizza...it looked delicious!!
