Ok,
This is a qualified review, qualified in the fact that the 5 star rating is not necessarily for any one particular thing.  I mean, if your getting a steak, you go to Del Friscos or S&W.  If you want the best in dining atmosphere there are any number of places in NYC, Chicago, LA, or Dallas you can attend for amazing service and food.  If, however, you want a great hamburger with great service in a place that has not changed in 40 years than you need look no further than Miner-Dunn.  I mean, this place is just great.  They don't make any claim to be anything but a warm, friendly, modestly priced restaurant and they do it as good as anyone.  The food is, and always has been, solid.  The Onion Rings are utterly original and I have not had their like anywhere.  The Burger may be the best I have ever had and remains so each time I have it.  The fries are nearly always perfect and what can you say about a place that offers a little cup of Sherbet after the meal!!!  I have been coming here from 1974 when I was just old enough to walk and it has never disappointed.  If I can say only one thing about Minor-Dunn, it's that it makes me happy.  Now how many places can say that ??  For that, it gets every star!!!
I was a little thrown off by the fact that this isn't a drive-thru....I just guess I drove past so many times that I just assumed. Â One of my coworkers, who is a local, has been telling me to go here for WEEKS now and I should have listened to him sooner.
I had a cheeseburger with onion rings on it. Â It was GREAT! Â I didn't realize that you have to ask for veggies separately, they don't just come on it automatically. Â The burgers are hand-made, not frozen/pre-formed. Â The french fries were also really good here. Â And to top off your dinner, you can get orange sorbet, orange/vanilla swirl, or just vanilla. Â Yum! Â I haven't had orange/vanilla swirl since I was a kid!
Living in Arizona for the past 20 years Miner Dunn is always a must stop when returning to N W  Indiana. The Mushroom burger with Onion Rings  was my dinner of choice and it was just the same good burger that it was Years ago. I had to chuckle when discussing the decor with my dining partners as it has not changed in the past 20 years along with the recipes. I hope this establishment is around for another decade or two, Highland Indiana just wouldn't be the same without it.
Review Source:This is a classic diner, and when you walk in, you'll see that right away. The decor looks like it is straight out of the 50's, but don't let that deter you, good food awaits.
Their burgers are thin flat top cooked burgers, so don't come here expecting a half pound burger. Fries are hand cut, crispy and delicious!
The "deluxe" version of hamburgers includes fries and soft server sherbet, it is well worth the $2.00 upgrade.
The service here is outstanding. Our waitress had tables all over the restaurant yet managed to be very attentive and very friendly to us. Our food took a very short time to cook, and we were able to get in and out of the restaurant in 30 minutes.
If you're in the area and looking to avoid a chain restaurant be sure to check out Miner Dunn!
I grew up going to this place for Sunday lunch and except for the workers and new owners a couple years ago, this place hasn't changed at all, decor included. The menu reminds me of Steak n Shake, with homemade burgers and milkshakes. They use Old English cheese, which is like a combination between American cheese and cheddar. Fries are natural cut and can be bland. The California medley soup (like a cheese vegetable soup) is a favorite, though I think it's only served on Sundays now. Prices range from $5 and up for a burger, fries, and a cup of either soft serve orange sherbet, vanilla ice cream, or twist of both. While definitely not worth a long drive, it's a staple diner of Highland, IN that's been around since 1930. Give it a try!
Review Source:This long time hamburger establishment is a throw back to the days before McDonald's dotted the landscape.
This nostalgic bit of Northwest Indiana history on Route 30 is well worth a visit down memory lane before all the mega stores and chain restaurants were around.
Good hamburgers... a friendly staff and a bit of home cooking Americana.
It's worth stopping in and enjoying some old time hospitality.
Use to go here more often than I do now.
Great chesseburgers - fantastic sherbert! It has changed owners only three times since its Grand Opening, so everything is pretty much the same; nothing's really changed. Friendly wait staff and good prices. It has that "family atmosphere" that most restaurants would spend millions to capture.
Perfect place for taking that first date, or the entire family before or after the movies.
Growing up about a 2 minute drive from Miner-Dunn, I have eaten here countless times. Â In all those visits, I don't think I've ever ordered anything besides the Salad Burger. Â Just think of a Big Mag, except old-fashioned, diner-style. Â The burgers are decent size, but I think it's best to order double meat with extra sauce. Â I just had one tonight, and my mouth is watering just typing this. Â Go to Miner Dunn NOW and get yourself a burger--if this place were to ever close I would be devastated!!!
Review Source:Been going here since Kiddieland was down the road. Â Nice taste of good old fashioned American food. Â We love the burgers and the kids chicken fingers. Â Shakes are thick and tasty. Â Be sure to get the free sherbet with your meal so you can dip your fries in it. Â I know that sounds crazy but its good.
Review Source:ok well first off  my great-grandparents ate at this place....so you would think thats a good thing.....yanno been im businees forever must be doing something right.....
but the possibillities of this place are endless....this could be the diner we all want and wish to have in our neighborhoods... but they make a ok hamburger that for some reason people here think is the best thing since....well, since hamburgers.....but thats about all....
the burgers are all hand made which is great...but too thin for my taste....always med or well done the times i have had them....fries never seem done.....people also come here for the fried chicken but i dont know why.....seems more like its *oven fried* than actually fried...none of that crunchy crust that makes yur first bite worthwhile....
service is always friendly and attentive....drinks refilled prompty....AND you get a small FREE cup of sherbet for dessert :-) Â .....
but the food just does not make it a trip i want to take.....
We were staying with a friend in NWI and decided to stick around the area for lunch before going to the Cubs game that evening. Â Miner Dunn caught our eye and in we walked. Â
I know that some people have written on here about the decor - honestly, it was like any other hole in the wall diner that I've been too. Â No it hasn't been updated, but that add to the whole experience. Â The place was clean and our waitress was pretty on top of things like refilling our beverages and giving us updates on when the food would be out.
I ordered the cheese supreme, which is sort of like a patty melt, but without the onions (though I suppose they could have done that for you if you asked). Â The burger was good and was nestled in between two pieces of cheese. Â The grilled bread - heavenly. Â You could taste the butter they used on the grill to get it to that perfect shade of brown.
My son ordered a burger as did his dad. Â They were quickly consumed so I can't imagine they had any complaints.
For dessert, I noticed that a lot of patrons received the sherbert in the dixie cups, but we were craving malts, so ordered two chocolate ones. Â They came out with whipped cream and sprinkles on top and were great. Â It's hard to find a place that still serves malt milkshakes!
Next time we are up visiting, we will definitely go back to Miner Dunn's for their burgers and cheese fries!
I grew up in Northwest Indiana - nuff said. Â Miner Dunn is nothing. Â PLEASE don't waste your time driving all the way out here for that. Â It LOOKS like it may be good, authentic, etc., but it is NOT. Â The burgers are pounded thin, generally cooked well done, and, if you have any affinity toward heartburn, I guarantee you'll have an outbreak within 30 mins of eating one of these burgers. Â Fries are sub par too. Â Ice creams probably the best thing there, but as Marisa R. notes, it's hardly "fresh" ingriedients. Â AVOID. Â Miner-Dunn does have one thing going for it - it's better than Schoops, which BLOWS.
Review Source:I can't tell you how happy Miner Dunn hamburgers make me.
First of all, it's a known fact that Chicago is not a hamburger town (other than it being the birth place of McDonald's). Â Admit it. We've got pizza and hot dogs, but as for hamburgers, well, they're just not that great. So when you want a really good burger, you have to head to Northwest Indiana for a Schoop's or Miner Dunn burger.
These babies are tried and true steak burgers, pan-grilled in all their tasty juices so you're no skimping out any flavor at all. Pile on a some relish and onions, and you've got yourself the perfect burger.
Miner Dunn is supposedly "known" for their fries, since they're hand-cut. I actually don't like them all that well. They're a bit too soft for me...but that's just me. I like my fries extra thin and crispy.
The shakes, on the other hand, are incredible. Piped off with fresh whipped cream, the chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla are so tasty, but the cherry is my favorite! It's made with cherry syrup--probably artificial--but that's why it tastes so good! I've had real cherry shakes and, quite frankly, they're pretty gross. I prefer that vintage taste of phosphate syrups.
