The only thing it has going for them is the bacon.
Same lame music (awful white boy reggae/Dave Mathews wanna be's) as the rest of OB. PASS.

Came here for happy hour (3-7) on a Wed after OB farmers market
    You get
    $1 Off Craft Drafts
    $2 Domestic Drafts
    $2.75 Well Drinks
    + 1/2 Off Appetizers

They have a vast selection of beers.
Being the girl that I am, I had an apple ale, which was like a cider.
Also got the calamari, which is pretty spicy with a kick. yummy tho.
Service was great. The server repeatedly came and checked up on us and refilled our water multiple times.

Overall: Great place to chill with friends. Gets pretty crowded later in the night. Even on a weeknight.

This is one of my favorite places in Ocean Beach let alone San Diego. A great place with a great staff. Homemade bacon along with wings, burgers and great specials and cheep drinks and FREE local live music.

I like this place. Have only been here once, but had a blast and shut the place down. Love that you can play music on the digital jukebox...so lots of good jams to be heard  while enjoying good drinks and great company.

Pool tables and a shuffleboard table to keep folks entertained. TVs everywhere. What more can you ask for?

I stopped in here on a friday night. The place was cool, the staff was nice and they had a reggae band playing. The band sounded like most of the sublime/slightly stoopid wannabes. Then some guy, I am guessing was the promoter of the night, kept bugging me about his production company. He must have asked me 3 times if I have heard of gale force productions. That was kind of annoying, because the band wasn't even that impressive, and he kept promoting himself more than the band LOL!!

This is my kind of place.  It's laid back and has an eclectic crowd.

Mother's sponsors Vavi leagues, so there are plenty of people in t-shirts and shorts drinking (pre or) post games.  There are the locals.  The hippies.  The hipsters.

There are pool tables and a shuffleboard table.

Last night when I was there there was a pretty jammin' band (Hendrix, Steve Miller Band, Joplin) as well as a dude painting on stage along with the music.  We were hoping he is part of the band.  He flipped the painting after every song or so and took breaks every now and then.  I left before he finished.

    I just like it there.

Went here with.. my mother. Funny I know. She was like "oh you like burgers... let me take you somewhere" and I was like "OH HELL YES I LIKE BURGERS!"

So... its a bar that serves food. I'm like 32 my moms like 50. Keep this in mind. We're in ocean beach drinking beers and eating burgers at a bar. If my mother wasn't there I probably would have been the oldest person there ha. Anyways they have this awesome burger/beer/fries special. I guess they cure their own bacon which always gets a bonus point in my book. Bacon makes everything better.

I got the badass burger? I think? It's the one that's supposed to be spicy. I like the spicy food. This is one spicy friggin burger. It made me sweat! I normally only sweat when I do athletic things like standing still or watching TV. Anyways. Good burger.

The wings were delicious. Exactly the kind of buffalo wings I've been craving. Only problem was that they mixed up our order so instead of an order of buffalo wings and habanero they have us buffalo and BBQ... BBQ wings are a disappointment to me wherever they come from so I won't judge them on those. The bacon wrapped dates were a little burnt but still tasty. The Mac n cheese with jalapeños and andouille sausage was awesome!!! I'll have to come back to try and burger :)

I stopped in after the usual dog walk at the beach.  I left the wet sandy dog in the car, though they do have a water bowl out front.

I just needed a beer and an appetizer; I had a good Fat Tire, and "Just Bacon" - two sticks of fat, flat, tasty bacon served with a bit of bbq sauce.

The barwoman was efficient and busy.  There was an odd mix of patrons - an old guy was talking to a group of young women about Daft Punk.  The place has lots of tables up against the windows, nice and breezy but not the interesting crowds wandering by like there are on Newport.  Would be nice if there was a patio I could sit with the dog, but I'm not sure how they'd build that.

Mother's Saloon is A-OK with me.  They've got a great beer and liquor selection.  I got to enjoy my Ballast Point Pale Ale and some tasty mac 'n cheese.  Plus they've got live music during the weekends (maybe even during the week).  It's a great OB spot to drink some beers and catch up with friends.

Chill bar to hang out with friends. Play a game of shuffleboard or pool.

Their food is borderline gourmet. The Mac and cheese(w/ kielbasa and roast corn) was amazing, bacon wrapped dates, beer battered fries were all surprisingly phenomenal for bar food.

I wasnt sure if i liked the peanutbutter, bacon, cheddar slider.

I don't get out to OB much now that I don't live nearby (it really just isn't my style at all) but on a recent venture out there to visit Crown Point Catering, we stopped at Mother's. We were pleasantly surprised. It was mid-day on a Wednesday and there were a few gentlemen finishing up their lunches. We just had a beer - decent selection of stuff on tap as well as cheap Rolling Rock in cans.

As we left we noticed the shuffle board table (we'd seen the pool tables but didn't realize there was also shuffle board for some reason) and decided if we were ever in the area, it'd be a decent addition to the shuffle board rotation.

Good bar live music Yay! The food is off the hook the best burger in OB, and the bartenders are pretty cool. Good place to meet a hottie or two drinks are a little overpriced but whatever still worth it.

I came to Mother's after playing some beach volleyball in OB.  Having only been once, I'd say it's your typical bar saloon with lots of focus on drinks and a small menu of bar food focused specifically on burgers and sandwiches.  All the tables are essentially bar tops and it definitely has the saloon feel.  Food prices are decent again for the area, but you'll be paying $10-12 for a burger.  Maybe a little steep for a burger, but guess it depends on what you're looking for.  The food is pretty standard of bar food, greasy and artery-clogging but being my first burger I'd had in probably 6 months it was pretty delicious.  The fries were pretty good and the burger was cooked well.  The bun is quite substantial for the bun-burger ratio so if you really like large toasted buns then these burgers are for you.  The quality is definitely on the higher end thus compensating for the price.  It's definitely better than the drive-thru at your local fast food chain.  The service was decent.  Servers were pretty attentive minus a mishap and mix-up of orders from the kitchen.  In addition, they have quite a few flatscreens so it may be a good choice for sporting events.  If you're looking for some greasy-spoon burgers, sandwiches and fries with a good selection of beers on tap or a open bar, Mother's could be calling your name.

    the good:
-service (bartender was quite attentive and very civil)

    the bad:
    -tacos (um...)

yeah, yeah... i know it's not a taco shop - but - they advertise taco specials on tuesdays ($2.00 each) and i didn't come across any other mother's taco reviews here, so i figured i'd share my experience.  i ordered one carne asada and one chicken taco, neither of which was good.  the protein in the tacos was almost minced and very, very dry.  as in borderline-jerky-dry.  the accompanying salsa was also quite tame and the only hot sauces offered were sriracha and tabasco sauce, so there wasn't a lot that could've been done to salvage the tacos.

this joint apparently has tastier items on the menu but, as for tacos, you're better off going to the tilted stick, liticker's, or south beach as mother's strengths lie elsewhere.

This place is pretty cool (and cold when the windows are all propped open), although the motorcycles in front scared my friend and I as we walked up. We had a two hour wait for Bo-Beau and needed a place to sit and snack and the positive reviews on Yelp led us here. Pros: The bar food here is not your average bar food. It is amazing. Where else do your stuffed mushrooms have balsamic glaze over them?

I'd definitely come back during another wait for Bo-Beau.

Last week was the first time I have ever been here and I will say I had a good time.  My coworker and I came here for lunch and the lunch special is a fun one.  $10 Burget and a Beer - anything on draught.  Now, they do they make their own bacon on property which I have yet to try, but, from the word on the street, it's quite tasty.

We opted to try the burger and beer lunch special and I went with the Mother F'er.  Now, let this be known, be prepared to sweat a bit if you love heat because this burger packs a punch.  It's a jalapeno stuffed burger, pepperjack cheese & a habernero BBQ sauce.  Our waitress actually asked me, "You know that this burger is hot right?"  Yes, girlfriend, bring it.  And she did.  It's definitey a burger you have to take your time with and once you are done, it definitely lingers more than you think. I will say that it's quite tasty and all, but 100% messy - There is no way around it.

My coworker got a more mild burger with swiss and bacon and he had no problems with it whatsoever.  It was an enjoyable meal & nice atmosphere.  I have yet to be here at night as of now, but from what I hear it's a fun spot.  They do have an entertainment license, which means they do have live entertainment from time to time.  I will have to come back and see what it's all about.

They do take credit card, they have parking right in front, but otherwise street parking is available and they have pool tables and games to play.

I'm pleasantly suprise by their yummy menu. I had a craving for a BURGER. So my kinder than kind boyfriend, suggested we hit this place up.  I yelped it and see lots of good reviews....we go.
OH BABY!!! BACON BURGER ...I think it's called the So Cal. I LOVED IT!!!
The menu is FILLED with lots of BACON things...they even MAKE their own bacon here. So yummy!

We also had the Artichoke spinach dip....served in a delicious sourdough bread bowl.  The 2nd time we came here....we HAD to have the dip again.  It is seriously really good!

We missed it....but there was a menu special with "happy hour" type stuff during NFL games! YES! Who doesn't love a deal.

We've also caught some LIVE music playing here after 9pm.  Definitely go to Mother's.  They are a real SAN DIEGO place!  (& CHARGERS FANS!!!)

Great beer, good atmosphere, and yes, the bacon is worth the price of admission alone.

Con: Fries are WAY TOO SALTY! Nobody at my table finished their fries. In fact, most left at least half their order behind. It's really a shame since the fries could be really good with about half the salt.

Do yourself a favor and ask them to skip the salt. Talk about overkill.

Consecutive days of trying out awesome bacon-themed bar/pubs.  Previously was Slater's and now Mother's..

You would think I had my cured pig fill after devouring a 2/3 lb mound of half bacon not more than a day ago, but well.. you don't know me.  I decided to change it up from our regular taco tuesday business, and with the pestering of a friend, we headed on down to mother's.  While its on the other side of town, I think I might be making the trek more often.

I ordered the two cuts of bacon, more like divine little slabs of bliss, and fried zucchini which were also good.  My buddy ordered the carne asada fries... DAMN!! Freaking amazing.  Whenever he would go to take his shot at pool, and I would sneak a couple bites in.  haha and I won!

The food is great, the service was fine, and the place is nice.  Still OB, but classy.  There's shuffle board and pool tables, along with a stage.  I didn't go when they had live music, but I plan to return and I'm sure I won't be disappointed.

I ate bacon, at a bacon bar, on Bacon St.

The beer was also fantastic as was the live music. Mother's Saloon is an Ocean Beach dive bar with great food, great drinks, great service, and great live music. Stop in and get yourself two slabs of delicious bacon and maybe even the Bacon Street Blues burger. Sure that might be over kill but you only live once!

Attention bacon lovers, proceed to Mother's Saloon immediately!!!  Seriously some of the best bacon I've ever had, pretty sure they cure it themselves.

Been wanting to check out the former DreamStreet location since they opened and finally pulled the trigger on an alcohol fueled bicycle mission last night.

Pretty fucking cool spot and very nicely done renovated interior.  Very friendly and attentive bartenders/waitstaff, killer craft beer selection and excellent food.

Started with the wings and a side of bacon...seriously, and continued with the bacon theme into the bacon wrapped jalapeños with bacon  mac 'n' cheese for dessert.  I planned on having dinner but was having too much fun with the glory that is cured pork, all were very tasty.

Who the fuck drinks bud light in a bottle when you have beers like Jamaican Red, Racer 5 IPA and Mad River Extra Pale on tap!  Seriously people, Shocktop is brewed by Michelob...yuck!!!  Mexican car bomb was a first for me, who knew Patron was making a coffee liquor...sheesh!

Live music was great, two bands from LA that had somne really unique sounds and rocked the hiz house.  Go there now!!!

This establishment is an entertaining place for a number of reasons:

    1. Shuffleboard (extra long table so even more skill involved as to where the puck curves)
    2. Pool tables
    3. More than your average draft beers
    4. Bacon Bacon Bacon

Reasons why I still give this place 3 stars:
    1. Pool tables are plastic and cheap
    2. The burger I ordered came out so greasy that I couldn't put it down at the risk of getting my bread soaked in oil.

All in all still a chill place but I found it strange that there is an AA center right across the street....how tempting....

Drinks are stiff, bartenders are friendly, live band was AMAZING. If anybody knows what the band's name was on May 26th evening, please shoot me a private message. The singer sounded like a young Janis Joplin, and the lead guitarist had some amazing runs. Too good to be playing at an establishment such as this, for sure. What a treat it was to have them.

Took 2 stars off for the rude, sumo-wrestler, wanna-be bouncer who harassed me to take off my glasses just because I am Asian. Are my eyes too small for you to see?

Can't say too much about diversity, but "all-caucasian" seems to be a trend in OB bars (see my review for Sunshine Saloon).

Mother's is becoming a new favorite spot for a quick dinner or after work drink.  They have a great happy hour and the food is delicious.  I haven't been disappointed by anything on the menu yet - a favorite is their mac n cheese with bacon (this place is all about bacon) or the chili bread bowl.

I've had Shannon as a server, she's always super accommodating and bubbly - like most of the staff there.

They have a couple pool tables and shuffleboard to keep you entertained.  There has been live music a few times that I've been there, too.  Pretty decent bands.

Check this place out, its about time OB upgraded to a nicer hang out like Mothers!

I live across the street from here so I tend to end up going here for a quick happy hour beer or a little late night munchery. I remember when it was Dream Street, they've really turned the place around as far as looks go. I enjoy sitting in the big open window and doing some sun-bathing/people-watching. They have shuffleboard and a few pool tables, also have had live music on a few occasions, although I wasn't really digging the bands. Kind of an older crowd that seems to have a very 'locals-only' mentality. Doesn't bother me too much seeing as I grew up in San Diego and have lived and spent a lot of time in OB.

Would like to see a better micro brew selection. Have a few local beers but nothing too exciting. I do like that they have Racer 5 IPA, one of my favorite IPA's. Service is okay. Mostly girl staff one girl in particular is always very nice and sweet to me, but last time I was in here for a quick weekday happy hour with my girlfriend it took us close to 5  minutes to get a drink.. it wasn't busy, but the bartender took her sweet time chatting it up with a group of guys even though she made eye contact with me several times before wrapping up her conversation to serve us.

The foods pretty good, I don't eat meat but they do smoke their own bacon here so I'd suggest trying it if your into bacon. I've had a pretty good ahi salad and french fries here, would like to try more food from here sometime.

Overall, this place is good. I'll keep coming back when I'm too lazy (or inebriated) to hit up Pizza Port or Gallagher's.

Your mom would enjoy it here much more than the previous occupant of the space. When it was Dream Street it looked less like a bar and more like a sketch-balls anonymous meeting. Now...after the remodel and addition of some pool tables, My Touch Tunes jukebox, and shuffleboard it's actually a place you'd hang your hat.

The food was much better than expected. Menu is your basic bar bites, but make sure whatever you get to add a side of fries. They were the most memorably delicious part of the meal. There's also a section dedicated to the candy of meats, which is never a bad feature.

Our drinks seemed a little light on the pours, but it could have just been my imagination. Overall, a welcomed addition to the OB bar scene. Dust off your hippy gear and give it a go.

This review is going off what I recall about this place, which let me tell 'ya is natta lotta.

The service was quick, friendly, and efficient, despite being at what appeared to be full capacity. The drinks were pretty affordable.

Great service, great prices, great crowd = great experience. Since I was pretty tipsy the first and only time I've gone to Mother's Saloon, this review can only go so far.

Had a rock solid experience over the weekend here (3/31/12).

Came in on Saturday afternoon for a bite and a beer. Wasn't ridiculously crowded, but far from empty either.

A blonde girl (sorry, threw out the receipt so I don't have her name) was our server and she was on point. Quick to refill my multiple waters and our beers. Good with recommendations too.

My buddy and I split the bacon wrapped dates (the manager said they were insane, and he's right), but they had a lot of other good, but not good for you, apps I want to try.

I'm a big burger guy and my burger was excellent as well. Thick bacon, cooked medium as I asked, came out after the dates and overall just quite tasty. Not a huge fan of the fries. I think they tried to make them garlic fries... they weren't bad, just not rave worthy. The burger and dates more than made up for it. Solid collection of local beers on tap and enough bottles to satisfy people who just want a Bud or Corona Light.

Atmosphere is an OB mix. Some kids under 30, some people over 45. Lots of sports on TV, open and bright, but not ridiculously bright (they have windows that pull out when it's nice). Think an airier version of Cass Street Bar, minus the fish theme, add in great looking concrete floors, nicer bathrooms, better lighting and obviously newer. They have pool tables and a juke box in the back too.

Overall, I'll be back for sure. I know some reviews say they haven't had the best time, but it was solid for us. Give it a shot. I was stoked.

Mother's is the type of place you can bring your Mom while she's visiting San Diego. They've got great food, and good, relaxed atmosphere. Plus, you can grab a beer  with out your mom feeling like she's in a dirty bar. With that said, Mother's has a lot of potential.

Just be warned, or really patient when you come in, because the few times we've been in the service has been "painfully OB"

"Painfully OB service" usually consists of any combo of the following:

    (a) waiting painfully long to order a beer,

    (b) waiting painfully long to receive said beer (and even longer for the water you asked for),

    (c) a disappearing server,

    (d) having your appetizers come out after your food,

    (e) a sense of being rushed off a table when you've still got full beers, etc.

Good happy hr, and "Torrey" the bartender gave good service with a smile. Now this place is my once a week burger stop.

5 stars for food!  They smoke their own bacon and it sure makes a difference.

Our first visit to Mother's -- it's a pleasant hang-out type place with pool tables and  shuffleboard. Kind of non-descript until you taste the food. My husband ordered bacon-wrapped shrimp off the app menu and he said it was about as good as it gets. I ordered the SoCal burger and it was a feast for the mouth. They substituted fries for a salad at no charge, (which wasn't shown as a menu option,) so they get an extra plus for that.

The management must be paying attention to the Yelp reviews about the service, because they bent over backwards trying to please.  Super nice manager even brought out an experimental plate of chili cheese fries with bacon because my husband told him about a plate he'd had at a restaurant in another city.

    Will certainly go back again.

Tried checking at Bo Beau last night when in a crazy turn of fate, we ended up at Mother's - and oh, how glad I was.

I had one of the specials (a grilled cheese with tomato and bacon) and beer-battered parmesan, garlic fries.  Both, were to die for!  My boyfriend had the Tijuana dog and judging by the lack of crumbs on his plate, I'd say he enjoyed it just as much as I did.  Seriously, I can't say enough about my meal! It's not fine dining, but it was good, reasonably priced fare worthy of the trip!

My only complaint is that the service was a bit... actually, veeeery slow.  I think there was one bartender/server working and he was on 'island time.' Irritating, yes, but not a deal-breaker (at least not on a first visit).

I can't wait to go back and try more on their menu!

Hey look...another bar in OB! Ok, not exactly a revelation in the land of bars here. But this place is on point already in so many areas.I won't talk about decor (loved it, reminded me of bars back in the '70's, wood, wood, wood), or the brews, since others on here already did.

Not being much of a drinker myself....oooh, I know, shocking...I was SO excited to see a real gastropub (gastro=gastronomy, get it?) opening up around the corner from me. I talked to the owner, Colin a few times when they were still getting things ready and he told me that it was going to be a bacon based menu...he had me at bacon! Besides their own menu, they were going to have people bring in recipes from their Mothers, feature them on the menu, and have you bring in pics of your Mother to put on the wall. I thought, wow, very novel idea. Love that. But, after talking to their chef yesterday.....he didn't sound like that was going to happen, and here's why I don't really care anymore if they do that.

First, Colin had the amazingly good sense to bring in an already established, well known local chef, Aaron Lamot, from the Pearl Hotel on Rosecrans in Pt. Loma. Aaron's reputation precedes himself as I ate at the Pearl before and loved it. Aaron came out and introduced himself and proceeded to make me several dishes...each one blowing me more away than the last.

First, he brought out some BBQ wings, other flavors include Buffalo, teriyaki and Mother's Habanero. All sauces are made by Aaron. Fantastic and bold flavors in his BBQ sauce...finger lickin' good. Then he brought out what has to be the most incredible Baked Mac 'n Cheese I've ever had. In it were grilled corn, smoked Jalapenos and here's the kicker...Andouille Sausage! It even got a little crispy on top.  My friend and I could not stop digging into that. It's one of those dishes, that I will order every time I go there. First time I've had a Mac 'n Cheese that beats Bonnie Jean's Soul Food Cafe..and that's sayin' sumpin!

I also ordered one of their many burgers, the Bacon Street Blues Burger. Melted blue cheese with their house made Apple Wood Smoked bacon on it. He even asked me how I wanted it cooked! And for those who read my reviews, you know it's one of my pet peeves when I can't get my burger cooked MR which most places just won't do anymore. It was juicy, flavorful, smoky and cooked perfectly. The potato bun it was served on, was the icing on the cake, so to speak. LOVE it when they toast the bun...and this one was crispy inside and out! Served up with very tasty and crispy garlic, parmasean fries.

And as if my stomach could handle anymore, he brought out some tapas for me to try. Bacon wrapped dates stuffed with blue cheese and bacon wrapped shrimp....to die for! For right now, all their tapas are bacon based...even a Tijuana Dog wrapped in it!

The menu will probably be tweaked a bit over the next few weeks Colin said. But I hope they don't get rid of what I did try. Things not tried by me yet included, Chili, teriyaki beef skewers, chicken tenders, zucchini sticks, artichoke dip, wraps, sandwiches, for you veggie lovers and I've got to try it too...a grilled portobello, roasted red peppers, grilled zucchini, goat cheese and brushed with pesto sandwich! They even have a sesame-crusted seared Ahi Tuna with avocado and wasabi aioli sammie...yumm! Oh, and salads too...looking forward to Aaron's version of a Chinese Chicken Salad.

They are even ambitious enough to serve breakfast.(opening at 9 am on wknds) and I'm about to head over and try their biscuits and gravy....I am REAL hard to please when it comes to that. Breakfast burritos also on the menu. Bacon potato home-fries?? Gawd...I can feel my arteries clogging as I speak, but who cares? I've found bacon heaven a few doors away! We all know everything tastes better with bacon on it!

I guess I lied a little bit about not drinking...because they had $3 Mimosas and I'm a sucker for champagne, so I did have a couple of those. That's how much they were charging for bloody mary's and their well drinks too. Great prices on those. Menu prices run from $7-10....prettty good prices for top notch food. I will report back as I try more things on their menu. Thanks Aaron!!

For right now, they are taking cash only, with an ATM going in there real soon. Web site is in the process of being built, but their phone number is 619-221-8100.

Hoping to see my band, Whiskey Rebellion play there soon. Old time blues would fit in there real well.

I've got a new favorite in the neighborhood and if you don't live in OB, this is a for sure destination gastropub that should be on your list. Not on Newport, but still has big open windows to watch all the OB freakiness fly by!
