Mount Kisco is a great little Japanese restaurant located right off the main downtown strip in Closter, NJ. The establishment itself is very small, and offers a cozy and intimate ambiance if you choose to dine-in, though delivery and takeout are also available (and very popular, from the looks of it). There is both lot and street parking, and you typically won't have too much issue finding a space on most nights.
Now, onto the important stuff....
A wide selection of Japanese appetizers, entrees and sushi are available. All the western favorites are here, from chicken teriyaki to the ever-popular California roll and various udon and tempura offerings. The menu certainly leans more towards the American palate and brown rice is also available from the sushi bar.
Every time I've been here, the sushi has always been fresh and expertly prepared while the sashimi is top-grade. You can choose from modestly priced sushi and sashmi dinner combination platters or make selections à la carte if you also want to have one of their excellent entrees in addition to a side of sushi.
While sushi is certainly worthy of being the star attraction of your meal, the entrees and appetizers definitely should not be ignored. There's nothing better than biting into a crispy piece of shrimp tempura or delicious deep-fried soft shell crab to start off your Mount Kisco dining experience, and dinner entree choices like the classic katsudon are perfectly seasoned and cooked.
The service at Mount Kisco is also excellent, and the knowledgeable waitstaff can easily answer any and all questions you have about the menu, and their clear explanation of dishes you may not be familiar with might even encourage you to be a bit adventurous.
I've been here twice with my boyfriend and this place is amazing. Â I have yet to taste better sushi. Â We used to go to Sushi Village (for all you can eat) but their special rolls are very filling and we end up paying the same as we would for an all you can eat sushi place but with much better quality. Â Superb.
Review Source:I really enjoyed this place - first off - BYO with a liquor store right next door? Â Cant beat it. Â 2nd the sushi was really good! Â We had edamame and seaweed salad to start - both really good (but I feel like these are pretty standard and tough to mess up!) Â We also had 2 regular rolls and 2 special rolls - regular were spicy tuna and mexican roll (which was basically a tuna roll with some kind of spicy powder) both were pretty good and pretty standard safe bets... Â Also had the spider roll - very tasty AND the size was great! Â Often special rolls skimp on the size but this was a really long roll - at least 8 pieces and not too wide (I am used to getting these big wide spider rolls that you cant down in one bite and they inevitably fall apart if you try to eat them in 2) so this was not quite as wide and just perfect! Â Also got the Closter roll - this was the hit of the night for me! Â The batter on the outside could have been a litte crispier and alittle less.. betterrerry (ha) but really had a great taste to it! Â Overall - this place is tiny but kind of charming, the service was good, it was alittle pricey but the sushi was good = a solid 4 stars!
Review Source:I am not sure what everyone is expecting from a local sushi joint. I admit that this place isn't Masa, but it is a superb little sushi joint in town. I suggest you to try one of their "today's special" sushi. The owner has a interesting twist to many commonly available sushi rolls and they are great. I don't live in the neighborhood, but when I am around i definitely swing by for some fresh sushi. Also... BYOB! What more do you need?
Review Source:I don't think I've ever written a review for a place so quickly after eating there, especially a bad review. It's a shame too because I was hoping that this place was gonna be my go to place for affordable sushi.
I've been here twice. The first time during the lunch rush on a weekday. I got one of their bentos that came with 6 pieces of (very thin) sashimi, vegetable tempura, salad, and miso soup. For $10 that was a pretty good deal. Flash forward two weeks to lunch time today. I arrived at 2:32 pm and was handed a menu that looked different from the one I had last time. I flip through the pages to look for a lunch menu that wasn't to be found so I ask the guy whether they still have lunch. He said, "Sorry lunch ends at 2:30."
Really?? Two minutes? You can't give a guy a break for 2 freakin' minutes? Nevertheless I decide to order their winter roll which comes with an assortment of raw fish inside. When the roll comes out I'm wondering what happened because I could have sworn the picture came with 8 pieces for the roll. So not only do you guys not give me a break for the lunch menu, but you decide to jew me out of a few pieces for my roll as well. I see how it is Mount Kisco, don't count on me coming back anytime soon. There aren't very many Japanese restaurants in the area, but I'd rather save my money for a nicer place in the city once in a while, than come to a place regularly that isn't going to treat a customer right.
Small place but extremely cozy and welcoming. Â THe food is great - both fromthe sushi bar and from the kitchen.
I recommend trying their special rolls, especially their Caribbean Paradise Roll if you like the combination of mango, pineapple, and salmon. Their special menu usually has a lot of really creative sushi rolls, among other things, if you're feeling adventurous!
I LOVE THEIR TERIYAKI SAUCE. It's thick and has such a complex flavor.. sweet, salty, Â fruity, savory (umami?) Honestly, along with their ginger dressing, I could probably drink it straight up. Shots of ginger dressing and teriyaki sauce anyone?
Go eat here - you wn't be disappointed
Mount Kisco is definitely an average place with above average food. The sushi, however, doesn't hold up to the same standard. I'm not too sure what was bad about it, but I think if the rice is cooked poorly it makes for a really terrible roll. With about 11 or 12 sushi places in a small radius, you won't have a hard time going elsewhere.
