When Village Chicken disappeared in favor of Boardwalk Fries, I about cried. Not that Boardwalk is awful or anything, just Village was my favorite little place to pick up a quick, cheap and tasty bite. My favorite part about Village Chicken is that the employees always seem to be in a good mood - it cheers you up. You don't get that a lot around here.
Now that "The Village" is back, I feel like my life is complete again. There are 3 go-to's on the menu for me:
-chicken quesadilla -- get peppers and onions and dip in the tzaziki sauce
-gyro
-house salad -- a true man salad, covered in gyro meat from the meat tornado, chicken, dressing....it's not a salad you eat when you're on a diet, that's for sure
I am a big fan of their chickpeas as a side dish, but am not particularly fond of the macaroni salad. Nobody's perfect, I guess. Most meals come with a drink and will set you back less than $7 overall.
Food was good but service was terrible. I ordered a chicken sandwich since I heard they were so good. Finally she gives me a gyro and I tell her this isn't what I ordered and instead of being apologetic about it he just keeps saying "no you didn't you ordered a gyro" Â after a little segueing I just had enough and took the gyro and ate it. It was good but come on, they need to learn some customer service.
Review Source:Great gyros and cheap for west springfield ($4.65). Â Also love their family meal for $10.95. Â Really fresh food and quick service. Â One thing that bothers me a little is that the roast chicken is still so hot when they put it in the foam container and it bends the container out of shape. Â Just wondering if this is releasing toxins into the food...maybe they need to wrap in foil first...anyways, great food and we may just have to eat there instead of take out for the really hot stuff.
Review Source:This is the best food bargain for miles around. The rotisserie chicken is fresh, Â impossibly juicy, and cooked to perfection.
Get the family special with a full bird, yellow rice, hummus and pita bread, and cucumber salad with feta cheese and feed your army for for about $3 per mouth.
Went here for my birthday lunch and did not expect this to be such a tiny place. Â The smells totally won me over and even though the freezing cold air would waft in every few moments while we ate, my family and I decided to stay here rather than go to Austin Grill. Â I ordered the gyro and hummus and others ordered the chicken.
The gyro was cooked very nicely and I enjoyed it tremendously. Â It was juicy and flavorful. Â The hummus however was subpar at best. Â I don't really remember the chicken but my family enjoyed it so much they ordered an entire chicken to take home afterwards.
The price was really reasonable for the gyro combo with two sides. Â I think it was under $8. Â Too bad the place isn't bigger.
This place is awesome. From the near-understandable English the minimum wage counter servers speak, to the spacious three-table dining room, it is excellent. It's even filled with fun gags, such as the ice machine not actually dispensing ice, yet the box next to it being filled with ice!
I digress. The gyros are the best in the area. My girlfriend discusses their chickpeas nightly. Even serve GREAT steak and cheese. Why the hell anyone goes to the Subway next door is beyond me. Their English isn't even understandable. This is one of the few gems in Springfield, where you can eat good food and not get shot at, unlike Tippy's Taco down in East Springfield, where your meals are best served with a flak jacket.
It's about time I got around to reviewing this place. I have been here over two dozen times in the last year and I never leave disappointed. The food is very good and the prices are excellent. My standards are normally the Chicken Slovakia (which you can get in either a sub or wrap) or the Gyro. They have many health salad options which include the tasty Gyro meat or signature chicken. This place is an excellent neighborhood eatery.
Review Source:4.5
If you've never had a gyro, this would be a good place to start.
If you've had a gyro, this would be a good place to start going
They've also got specials (5$ gyro on sunday i think), a great menu beyond the gyro's which includes rotisserie chicken and some great side dishes. Â My favorite side combo is the rice and chili (definitely get the chili).
This place can be addicting, you've been warned.
I eat here almost weekly. Â I highly recommend stopping on a Saturday or a Monday for the family meal special. Â For a mere $10.99, you get a whole chicken, two sides, and pita bread! Â It's enough to feed four adults, and it is DELICIOUS. Â If you go often enough, the ladies working there remember you and hook you up with some extra large portions. Â I love this place and I encourage everyone to give it a try!
Review Source:I've been to Village Chicken once and had the 1/2 white meat chicken meal; I chose the roasted potatoes and fairly plain mesclun green salad as my two sides.
The chicken was a little dry and all of the flavor was on the skin. Â There are several Peruvian style chicken places in the area that have FAR better chicken. Â The roasted potatoes were OK, but some chunks weren't cooked quite enough. Â The salad was unremarkable.
I rate the food two-stars, but added an extra star because the prices are  quite reasonable.
Village Chicken earns a rare fifth star from me for two simple reasons:
1) Â Their gyro is the best in the area, period. Â
2) Â They are not overpriced AT ALL
That being said, it does suck they are closed on Sundays. Â IF you want a delicious meal, get the gyro or gyro salad platter. Â I have been going here since 1995, and it is still delicious, cheap, and a great value.
I will continue to come here whenever I can and I am in the Springfield area.
Easily the BEST gyros I have ever had, period! Â They slice it off the lamb right in front of you, deeelish. Â I love getting the combo's to go (i'm not a fan of the chili in the combos, they overfill the section and it gets in my gyro), but dining in is also a treat. Â It's a quaint little corner store, and not a full on sit down restaraunt which is what i prefer anyways. Â
The only reason I knock a star off is because it is closed on Sundays.
I don't know what to make of this place. Â It's fine. Â I don't have too much to say in the way of 'bad.' Â In fact, the quarter chicken white meat that I had was good. Â Well seasoned, moist and tender--it was a well-made rotisserie chicken. Â I ate it all. Â The other stuff I had on my first (and so far only) trip there were not so good. Â I don't know why I agreed to chili as a side order, 'cause it was really bad. Â The kidney beans, or whatever it was they used, were too firm--hard, even. Â And yeah, what you'll spend here is recession-friendly, but is it palate friendly? Â It's hard to say, after enjoying only the chicken portion of my meal. Â The staff working their itty bitty kitchen, however, were just about the nicest people you'll meet. Â That alone is worth a return trip.
Review Source:I haven't been here for a good year, probably since I live about ten minutes from its vicinity and like to now eat out when I'm trying a new place in a different city... Â Anyways, the food is pretty good and pretty cheap. Â Most of the times I've been here was when I was a senior in high school and being the badass me and would skip... and.. eat... off... campus.. when I wasn't allowed... I know, sick the dogs on me and lock me up for forty years. The fact that it was walking distance and half my friends then didn't have cars, made it to the go to stop when they had a "headache and had to go home to get some medication" in other words hungry. Â I never had a complaint about the food, but since my other option was cardboard pizza in the cafeteria, probably made the food seem better. Â If any teachers are reading this, yea I skipped so what? are you going to give me detention?
Review Source:Good chicken! Â I went with the rotisserie half chicken (white meat) and bot let me tell you...this half-chicken had considerably more meat than the same order @ Boston Market for about the same price. Â The chicken was very good and juicy. Â However, i was unimpressed with all of the sides. Â I went with the black beans and chicken chili. Â I did not care for the chili and the black beans tasted as if they were straight out of a can with no seasoning. Â The bread was good and the chicken was good as well. Â I will try one of their sandwiches next time.
Review Source:I am so glad I finally stopped in here after passing it everyday. Â It's literally down the street from my house. Â What drew me in today was their Monday and Saturday family dinner special. Â $10.99 for a whole rotisserie chicken, 2 sides and pita bread. Â The chicken was seasoned really well and had a nice crust to it. Â We got the rice and chickpeas for our sides and they were good as well. Â
They also have gyro platters, sandwiches, and salads on the menu. Â I'll have to make a point to stop in for lunch to try everything out. Â A great local place to eat.
the perfect place for lunch.
i just found this place with the help of yelp and what a find. they have 10 different gyro paltters all for $7 bucks and under. what you get with your gyro (which isn't big, but sure is tasty) are a choice of 2 sides (choices from rice, cucumber salad, chickpeas, some kind of kickass beans, and more) and one soda fountain drink. i have had the chicken gyro and the village cuban. mmm damn mmm.
i haven't tried any of their many different bowl dishes, but it looks like i will more time to try out a lot more from their menu.
oh - this place is tiny. don't sneeze or you might miss it.
This place is a real gem.
Buried in the back of a strip mall in Springfield with only about 4 tables, this place serves great food at rock bottom prices. Homemade side dishes of vegetables and dishes with a Latin American twist. The sandwiches are fantastic and made to order. I love the Village Chicken which comes with lamb and chicken. The gyro is also fantastic.
Huge portions at a great prices. This place is tops for take-out.
A good meal? In the 'burbs?? ...
I'm serious!! Â And you won't be disappointed!
It's hard to find a good mom&pop shop in the suburbs where everything is overrun by chains and fast food.  But this is truly a gem in W. Springfield.  Their special platters are to die for - a gyro with 2 sides and a drink for less than 7 bucks! I had a med wrap? - hummus chicken, olives, lettuce, tomatoes and  tzaziki sauce on a warm buttery flatbread.  To die for.  My friend had their special wrap which was chicken and lamb on flatbread with all the fixins (tzaziki sauce, lettuce, tomato) and it was delicious. Meats were all perfectly cooked, and the delicious cucumber yogurt sauce was the perfect topper and really made the wrap.
The sides - the chicken chili was nice and light, the chickpeas were pretty good - not the greatest...but I'm hoping to try their cucumber salad next time. Â
I opened up my wallet the next day, stared at the receipt and thought..
"Wow, this is a steal!"
...Which compelled me to write this review...
My favorite deli and from the lack of reviews I'm guessing this place remains my secret. Chicken Souvlaki is awesome, gyros are awesome, even the cheeseburgers are huge and excellent.
The sides are just as good as the main dishes so make sure you don't skip out. My favorites: Cucumber Salad, Rice n' ChickPeas, Chicken Chili is awesome!... and they always sell home made cookies at the register.
One of my all time favorite cheap eats!
