Nick's Pub

The hamburger and bacon tasted like it had been boiled.  Absolutely NO flavor!  The fish and chips were cold and the cod tasted like carp from the Mississippi River.  The shepard's pie was very salty and undeniably canned veggies thrown into instant mashed potatoes with frozen pre prepared sirloin.  At least the salt gave it some flavor.  And best of all, we waited 45 minutes from ordering until getting our food.  Yes, I timed it... How on earth can you mess up bacon?!?!

Having lived in Dogtown for 3 years, I have frequented Nick's more often than I'd like to admit. The food is actually great for the price (cannot beat the $2 burgers when the game is on) and their beer selection (65) is pretty great too. The service in the dining area is generally slow, so the best bet is sitting at the bar. Although slow, the waitresses are very nice and personable. Recently they have increased their prices which has been a disappointment for myself and some other Dogtown buddies. We would go to Nick's and never spend more than $20 per person for food and plenty of drinks, however now it's certainly more in line with other bar prices. With prices being equal, Nick's really doesn't offer more than plenty of cleaner places with better service.

"We are going to Nick's" is a phrase that is often heard around my work place every Tuesday and Friday. I thought this was just simply due to proximity. For some reason or another, I always missed these "Happy Benders" until a few weeks ago. It was a Friday and the place was already a little hopping. I was suprised at the range of ages, simply because it looked like it would be your standard Dogtown Dive Bar crowd. My suprise did not stop. $1 beers, 1/2 off appetizers. I was in heaven. Cheapness is not something to be taken lightly in this day and age, and Nick's delivered. The service was not stellar, which is why at Nick's it is customary to order two beers at a time. Fantastic.

If you don't mind smoking in bars (and double fisting) I would highly recommend Nick's for happy hour. You'll thank me when you leave at 8:30 and your tab wasn't over $15.
