Definitely in the top 5 of worst dining experiences ever. After we'd ordered all of these bottles they informed us that there was no more food in the kitchen... This is at noon, which made no sense. Unless a very hungry hippo had been dining there just before we arrived.
Service was terrible and the management wasn't helpful AT ALL in resolving any of my concerns. I guess they'd already had $500 of my money when I complained so it didn't matter what happened next. This used to be one of my favorite venues to come to during my trips home. I don't plan on going back unless it changes owners. Ocean Bar represents everything that is wrong with the new South Bay.
I love coming here for happy hour. The week day happy hours are amazing here because it's usually not too crowded (if there's not an event going on or anything) and it's such a beautiful place to watch the sun set! The Abigaile beers (brewed there) are only $4 during happy hour, and I really like their beers. Also, the tasting menu available during happy hour always has new, interesting small plates that are only $6.88. Recently, I've had very tasty mussels there. Great deal!
That being said... I have been here a little later in the evening, when it was packed, and did not have the best service. The waitress was running in a million directions and it just took forever to get drinks, silverware, etc. which was frustrating.
I also went late night and it was very packed, loud, etc... a great place for singles, but I generally am not the type to like standing around all night - I like to sit! SO for me personally, I love this place for weekday happy hours, but try to steer clear of it when it gets super packed and meat-fest-ish late night/weekends :)
This is a pretty big bar! It's 3 floors!
Overall I had an awesome time here with my friends. I think I had like 2 trashcans and I was already feeling pretty good.
*1st floor: A big bar & bathroom on the right when you first enter
*2nd floor: A nice little patio, a dance floor and a bar(Dark as heck)
*3rd floor: Well lit, a mini bar with full of people just chit chatting and sipping on drinks
The dance floor was SUPERRR crowded! I bumped into this really tall guy who stood next to me and we just looked at each other like hayyy. My friends shouted that I should take a pic with him since he was so tall. He was 6'5!! So he lifted me up and we snapped a pic! Good times.
Crowd: Mainly Caucasians and a few Asian guys. The bathroom lady was such a sweetheart. She was dancin and shaking her butt when the music was blasting, so I joined her. Â Why do I always get along so well with bathroom ladies at clubs & bars? lol
Parking: We witnessed something extremely disturbing on the way back home. We were heading to our car and holly smolly this car was pulling out and hit the car next to him and just took off in the speed of light! This was in the underground parking structure. So word of advice, check your car before you leave for any damages!
Points  for the cleanness and friendly environment  .
Food????? tasty BUT greasy and fatty taste. IF you looking for fancy tasty junk food you would love it here.
Over priced  junk food. At first I did not mind paying $18 for two piece of chicken and two french toast for my son  and $14 for egg sausage sandwich-it's a price we pay for good quality food-which was not the case here. The food looked so delicious, however it was soooo greasy my body is still refusing to digest it. I am filling so sick that I for the first time tried making myself throw up the food-no luck. My son only took one bite of his chicken and changed his mind. That should have been a warning for me to not eat the food, he usually has good sense quality food.
Since we eat practically 95% of the time organic and natural, my son has developed a high quality taste, low tolerant for fatty greasy food. I regret having brunch here, on top having 20% mandatory gratuity added to my bill.
Soooo not coming back, unless for someone party which was why I came here in the first place.
I went on Friday night to see my friend perform and have some drinks someplace outside of Hollywood. Every once in awhile I like to get outta dodge and go someplace closer to the coast just for a change of scene and a chilled out vibe. After seeing the pictures on Yelp and Facebook, I decided I definitely needed to see what this place was about- firepits, really? and the view! Sold. I gathered an amigo and we ventured forth. Overall verdict? It's cute, it's casual, the view is rather lovely especially if you like being near the ocean like I do. I didn't try the food but it looked and smelled delicious. The service was 90% great and 10% this disgruntled bartender who I think hated his job. Parking was annoying, but would maybe be less annoying on a week night. Drink prices are decent; more than a dive bar which this place certainly isn't so I suppose that is to be expected. I'd go again if I had a reason to. It seems like it would be a great date spot, especially at the restaurant downstairs which I believe is called Abigail.
Review Source:Went here for a Saturday funday with some friends. Â The vibe is really cool and I loved the atmosphere. Â It was not crowded and we sort of felt like we were hanging out at a friend's house in their kitchen and then on their roof. Â The service was great, the food was yummy and the drinks were reasonably priced. Â We also got to finish their (what I'm assuming) super old Guinness keg for $3 a pint. Â Sorry friends looking for deal, we killed that thing. Â As far as the "crowd" is concerned, I was reading the reviews for the crowds and I didn't experience the "abercrombie/flannel" individuals. It was much more of an "older" crowd. Â But I still liked it and I would definitely come here again.
Review Source:WHAT THE FLANNEL!!! Â This place has so many dudes in Flannel its no even funny.. Â Make a drinking game out of it, discuss with your friends and have a good time. Â Prices are a little high and the drinks are a little weak, but pretty decent space for the area. Â Will probably go back just for the lumber jack convention and dancing s**t show. haha
Review Source:Hot guys? Check
Nice venue? Check
No cover? Check
Parking? Hit or Miss
Music? CHECK
Drinks? Spilled.
Came here because we wanted to get away from the Santa Monica bar scene. At first I was like HOLY SHIT, ITS EYE CANDY CENTRAL. But then I realized its a much younger crowd. Probably early to mid 20's. Which I dont really MIND.... until the sloppy drunks come out. These kids dont know how to handle their liquior. Ive gotten more drinks ON me than IN me here. Also, ugly ratchets come here - the ones that are a hot mess & wanna fight you. Yea..... get some class lady.
The music is GREAT, makes me want to dance all night - but there isnt really room on the dance floor unless you throw some elbows up.
I honestly dont know how I feel about Ocean Bar. I really WANT to love it but I just cant stand the immaturity here. But i'll prob be back anyways LOL.
I came here for my sister's birthday party. Â It was ok. Â Honestly, I'm not much of a bar person though. Â Parking was easy because they have a valet parking lot. Â However, it cost $6.50 even with validation and we were only there for three hours. Â
My sister got two tables upstairs. Â We had about twenty people in our group. Â The food was ok. Â Very pricey for what you get. Â Unless you get a burger with fries, the food will be a small plate. Â It's not really meant as a full meal, think of it as tapas. The waitresses aren't very good at clearing the table which kinda annoyed us. Â Especially when everyone got food and had drinks. Â
Around 10pm, it becomes more clubby. Â A line forms outside, they put sound protectors over the window, and they turn up the music so you can barely hear the person next to you.
Overall, I think everyone had fun.
I was only able to stay for an hour, but it was a good start to the night. This place has a festive, yet relaxed atmosphere. That's probably not a very helpful description, but you just have to check it out and see what I mean. Handsome and helpful waiters and waitresses. The drinks were reasonably priced (your typical $10-$12 bucks) and the crowd wasn't extra arrogant or anything. We shall meet again ocean bar!
Review Source:I've only been to the downstairs bar part, so this review is not reflecting the restaurant at all.
We came here for a friends birthday, showed up around 10, lucky for us it was right before the line started, the bouncers were just headed outside. For the first 45 minutes or so it was fine, we sat at one of their couches and visited. Then all of a sudden there was this WAVE of people, and it was impossible to move. We ended up dancing just to get away from the crush near the bar.
The drinks are not nearly amazing as they cost so I wasn't very thrilled. If I wanted to be packed into a tiny bar I could have gone to hermosa and paid less for drinks.
Super bummed to give this place a one star. I was there 20 minutes with my girlfriend for a quick drink...I had to use the restroom and asked her to watch my purse. I came back and learned she turned her back and someone stole my purse which had my iphone, makeup, license, credit cards, car key, parking pass. I know it sounds like the kitchen sink, but I wasn't planning on going out. I asked the bartenders and they said to check lost and found the next day. The management was not helpful at all. One person said they have surveillance cameras and the next person said they didn't. Sorry to say but I will not be going back to this restaurant or bar.
Review Source:Hands down the best place for EYE CANDY! I mean I have not seen this many beautiful people in one place...in the U.S. that is. lol. On a typical saturday night (summer night) its like abercrombie exploded in here.
ok now to the non-superficial review...The place is a typical beachy trendy lounge so the space is ehhh... and there is a combination of the type of dress here... casual and dressed up. You'll get the tshirt and jeans/flip flops to the sexy girl in a dress. Either way everyone here is great looking.
Atmosphere wise this place is awesome, I have yet to be here and not have a great time, people are friendly...very anti-hollywood crowd and more laid-back.
Drinks are moderately priced and well served by the good looking bartenders. I've never had the food here so this review doesn't reflect that. If your looking to have fun with friends, great music and awesome rooftop come here!
The only reason im posting on here is because of my disgust for Ocean Bar. Â My girlfriend was groped by some ahole & I confronted him to apologize to my gf...within seconds security intervened (which is valid). With not even putting my hands on the ahole OR security, one of the bouncers put me in a choke hold in which I couldnt breath at all. I think I almost knocked out & collapsed near the upstairs bathroom. Afterwards I had a minor cut on my nose & lip...today my throat hurts to where its concerning. Only go to this place if you think its okay for girls to get groped & security who use above & beyond excessive force. If my throat doesnt heal I will be suing this establishment.
BTW Im a local & active duty military. Please do not go to this bar/restaurant if you can avoid it.
I like the venue itself. Â Used to be a huge fan of the ambiance and the drinks.
BUT, watch out for the bartenders changing the amount you tip. Â We went their recently and I checked my credit card statement afterwards and it had been altered up to a 35% tip. Â Went and got a copy of the receipt and it had blatantly been altered (completely different handwriting and pen). Â When I complained, the hostess and the GM didn't seem sympathetic to me at all.
Came here on a Saturday night. This has the potential to be a really great spot, however, one of the security staff almost ruined our fun time... explanation to follow...
Pros:
A large dance floor
Crowd is decent looking and one of the few non-ghetto places left in Hermosa
An upstairs patio, so if you get hot you can hang out up there
Cons:
One rude security guard
DJ plays mostly electro not really dancing music
My gripe: The upstairs bouncer/empty glass collector was extremely rude!! As we were leaving the bar, I complained about him to the bouncer outside (who was a total professional). He was very busy but took the time to listen to everything I said, asked questions to find out exactly what happened and apologized for the other guy's hostile attitude. He told me  they are trying to steer clear of the typical "douche bouncer" so was disappointed to hear my complaint (about the one right upstairs).
Props to Ocean Bar for hiring such a great head of security! 5 stars to him, 0 stars to the upstairs security, 3 stars to the bar itself. Yes, I would definitely come here again.
Things have changed since my last review!
The happy hour goes to 7:30, Awesome!
The food is completely different in a good way! Same menu as downstairs but in the  revamped ocean bar atmosphere.
The night life is still just as fun! I personally like to party when I go out on the weekend, so walking up those stairs to the party awaiting is always fun and exciting for me! Two Saturdays ago my bf and I went up to Ocean Bar at midnight, needless to say it was insanely busy, Â line around the block. Easy solution, got in touch the bouncer who radioed the manager, got a bottle of champagne in the works. We were upstairs at a awesome table right in the mix in under 10 minutes. Its very hard to get this type of service anywhere, much less Hermosa!
Very cool experience, would recommend to any fellow good time seeker!
Douche bag every where including the bartenders to the staff. It seems as though they only want to cater to Caucasian, so if you're any other race you're guaranteed to be treated like 2nd class.
So don't waste your time or money here, spend it elsewhere, spend it at a business where they are truly happy to SERVE you.
Saturday, August 11, 2012. Five stars. PERIOD. Why? Because I can't remember sh*t. I do know I was there for a G.N.O., got bottle service, had a shot of kamikaze, and partied as though Armaggedon was upon us.
I woke up alone in the passenger seat of my car at 5:45 a.m. in a metered parking spot in South RB with a bag of puke double sealed in two Mitsuwa plastic bags (I keep a stash in my console for these occurrences). Either I had mad telekinetic skills to drive my ass to a quiet spot in the South Bay or I must have had a designated driver (thank you my angel!). Anyway, I, then, somehow collected the two ounces of consciousness I had in reserve to drive into the sunrise.
Ultimately, the sheer fact that I can recall 5% of what happened can only mean that my experience was SPLENDID. And that is why I heart OB.
I came here b/c I know someone who DJ's here on certain nights. Â No cover for ladies, guys may have to pay $5 bucks to get in. Â There are I wanna say three separate areas where you can drink, dance, hang out - 2 DJ's (each spinning their own style) & an outdoor rooftop-ish area w/ heat lamps on cool nights.
I would suggest grabbing a drink at the bottom level bar since there is less of a crowd in the room. Â I like the ambiance of the lower level room - low light, plenty of space, tables & chairs, good for groups/chatting/mingling. Â Chill music.
When you walk upstairs, that's where the main dance floor is w/ another bar that is usually hard to get to without squeezing through people.  There are tables/couches in the back and on the side of the room.  Music is amped up gets the crowd going.  The restrooms are in the hallway of the 2nd floor & are communal so men & women can use whichever one is available.  Sometimes the wait is forever  :( Â
Walk up one more flight of stairs and you're at the rooftop patio area where there is yes, another bar. Â Seating/tables also available if I remember correctly. Â
Never really witnessed any drama here either, which is nice :0) Â Just sucks how there are only 2 bathrooms.
Side Notes:
- Most people walk it or cab it, for those that are from out of town... there is a small lot down the street $5-10 & street parking if you find it
I booked a rehearsal dinner there 7/13/12. Greg, the manager was incredibly attentive. Â
They are revamping their appeal to private parties & we were one of the largest they've had to date. Â They knocked it out of the park. Â We had a mixed group of 60 people & everyone was thrilled with the unique, casual but chic venue & the killer view. Â The star of the show was Chef Tin. His menu & execution was flawless:
Hibachi chef grilling assorted skewers & a variety of sauces
Tray passed tapas were served by upbeat really friendly staff. The tuna tartare, chicken meatballs & bacon wrapped dates were big favorites. Â I loved the bacon flavored popcorn, fresh rosemary potato chips & marinated olives on the table for snacks.
The mixologist set a separate appointment with the bride & groom prior to the event to design their specialty cocktails. Â That evening was a great prelim for the festivities & added to their anticipation of the party ahead.
We brought in our own orchids & candles. Â They allowed us to buy wine via "Uncorked" Â in Hermosa & no corkage fee. Â The wine tasting was also a big plus for the group.
The music was perfect, sound adjusts in all areas to accommodate the speeches/toasts. Seating is comfy (modular sofas, assorted table heights), heat lamps if needed, retractable roof downstairs & open air upstairs. Lower level fireplace adds ambiance. Â
If you are planning a special occasion & are a disappointed with the same ol' same ol' you must call Greg. Â He & Tin make an exceptional team. They listen & customize brilliantly. Â Since this is their launch for special events, I can only imagine how great they will become!
I just want to dance!
This place is (pretty) popular, I guess. Not many people dancing though. Just a lot of standing around. Lame! Anyway, this is a rather small and cute place. Very chill, I guess this is expected for a "club" or "lounge" in a beach type area. The music was okay. It progressively got better as the night went on. Came here with a few friends, had a great time. The bartenders are pretty chill and nice. The drinks here are really strong. Got an apple martini (yes, it's a girly drink) and I could taste the alcohol. I couldn't finish it. Sorry! It's hard to find water in this place and the bathroom is really tiny. Had to wait in line, but that is not new for most women's restrooms. Why is it that women's restrooms never have enough stalls?!?
Anyway, if you're looking for a cool and chill place, come here. There is a seating area on the roof, which I thought was cool and has a beautiful view of the night sky and the beach.
Was invited to attend Ocean Bar's open bar event this past Thursday, in celebration of their re-opening following a recent remodel. Â Despite the fact we RSVP'd for the event a day beforehand, we were kept waiting in line for over thirty minutes, causing us to miss the event entirely.
I've never RSVP'd for an event and not been admitted. Can you imagine RSVPing for a wedding and not being allowed in? Â Not only that but it turns out their big "remodel" consisted of moving the DJ booth and slapping some paint on the wall. Not impressed.
Went on a Thursday night so this might not we a fair review but I am going to write one anyways..
I have to say that the Ocean's is a very cute place. A relax atmosphere. Nice was to be casual and to have drinks with friends. Open patio, so that's it's nice for summer.
My problem was the bartender. Young, short Caucasian guy who was obviously not there to make a buck... He was too busy trying to find himself a fu*k...
The bar was pretty empty and instead of trying to take our drink orders. He was too busy flirting with two mildly ugly Asian girls. Â
When he did ask us what we wanted. He was impatient and rude. We shouldn't have tip him but we did.
Maybe I'll catch this place on another night with a better crowd and a bartender who is there to bartend.
Nightlife is fun, drinks are strong and the staff are really nice.
I can honestly say I have made great friends here and even better the lovely  bartenders. They are all so nice and very quick making drinks.  Sean, Brad, Kyle, Rich and Josh are the BEST!!!
You are sure to have a good time with friends and watch the beautiful sunset at the upstairs patio.
I came here for a Happy Hour with coworkers after my last day of work with them. Â The ambiance and ocean views were amazing, especially at sunset! Â It was so cozy and comfortable. Â The drink and food specials were also great. Â
The reason I'm not giving it 5 stars? Â My bill came to a little over $16. Â There was a large group of us so I gave the waitress a generous (I thought) tip of $5 because she really did a good job. Â When I was checking my bank statement a few weeks after, I found that I was charged $51 instead of $21!!! Â My "2" might not have been written very clearly, because I was having trouble getting the pen to work, but the "5" for the tip clearly was! Â The waitress was good, but not that good. Â I mean, come on? Â A $35 tip on a $16 bill??? Â I called my bank to dispute the charge, but it would have been a big headache and I was on vacation at the time. Â So beware of what you are charged!! Â
I don't know if they did this deliberately (I hope not), but it definitely put a damper on my memory of a wonderful evening.
i was here last night for my bday dinner and hoping to end the night with music/dancing. Â Dinner went well and the food was good, beer sampler was also good, service was great w/ our server. Â
the reason i give this place such a low rating is because of the inconsistency of their door policy during the nightclub hours.  i tried to disregard the comments about the discrimination but not until my friends experienced it.  my party of at least 25 were denied entry because they were majority asians.  at first they said it was because of the flannel shirts the guys were wearing but then you would see caucasians wearing flip flops and tshirts, even shorts able to get in.  I tried to talk to the manager but he would give me the run-around answer.  One of the bouncers finally told us that its not about the  dress code it was about the "image" of the venue that they were tryin to protect.  Well the "image" they left with me is discrimination.
dinner was good, but dont plan to end you night here! i will never come back to this place.
I like to come to Ocean Bar earlier in the evening before it gets too "clubby". Â It's an upscale lounge with some TVs. Â
The burgers and fries are good. Â The flat bread pizza is large for one person. Â Do not get the tuna tower - not so good. Â Service at the tables is good.
Good views and sunsets in the evening.
After waiting for an hour in line to get in, a couple friends and I were denied entry by the manager because flannels aren't acceptable inside. Just a few feet away in the patio, some guy was wearing clothes similar to ours (we even pointed this out to the doorman). I don't think I've ever pulled the race card out, but when a friend inside texts us saying there are plenty of white boys inside wearing flannels, my brown skin can't just let it go.
Another friend of mine (not sure how) was in contact with some of the staff this morning and said the doorman remembers us. Apparently he was getting in trouble for letting people in with flannels because the managers are trying to create an upscale bar atmosphere. You can't tell me that when people with t-shirts and baseball caps are being allowed in. If the managers were getting mad at the doorman for letting people with flannels in, why did they tell him to enforce things when we're about to get in? Be fair and enforce your twisted idea of "upscale" on another night (if that's the real reason at all).
On top of that, come deny me to my face. The manager stayed away from the line the entire time like a coward and radioed the doorman not to let us in. We waited patiently in line (much more than I can say for anyone else waiting to get in) so I don't know what was so threatening about us.
If it weren't for a friend's birthday, I wouldn't even bother wasting my time in that ridiculously long line for a BAR that's (quoting 2 different groups walking out) "not worth the wait".
was denied entry by the manager due to "what i was wearing". i guess a button up flannel ISNT up to par with the place even though half of the people there were wearing the same thing. The other half were wearing vneck t-shirts. maaayyyybbbee it was because i wasn't caucasian? thanks for showing me that racism and prejudice is still alive in the south bay, ocean bar!
i'll NEVER go to this establishment again and ill be sure to advise everyone that i know to do the same.
Being from Vegas, I often refer to clubs in other towns as "cute." Â Ocean Bar actually exceeds this term, as it has a few different rooms, a decent DJ, and overall a good scene.
The line wasn't too bad. Â Only took about $15 to get in, and the door staff was pretty friendly by Vegas standards. Â $5 cover is almost funny to me, as I don't think there's a club in Vegas that charges anything less than $20. Â Happy to give them $5 to get in.
The drinks are a bit overpriced... I think we were paying like $16 for a double gin & tonic. Â Also a pain in the ass to get to the bar, and there was very little waitress service. Â But what do you expect from a club that's packed?!
One incident that did rub me the wrong way... came in and went to the bathrooms upstairs, which are unisex. Â Two girls were in the bathroom I was in line for, and one was puking in the sink. Â We all waited outside for awhile, and then we were getting impatient. Â I told the "sober" one to take the drunk one outside for some fresh air as they were being really rude to everyone waiting for the bathroom. Â They wouldn't leave, so I told one of the staff about the situation. Â Rather than handle it and remove the overly intoxicated guests, he said there was nothing he could do and got mad at me for getting impatient after waiting 15 minutes in line with a full bladder. Â Kind of a joke.
Oh well, it was a fun night, so Ocean Bar gets 4*. Â But oh so close to 3* with a staff that doesn't seem to give a f*** what goes on.
I really enjoy coming to this bar. It's amongst the only nightlife options in Hermosa where you have a few drinks in a classier atmosphere. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of backwards hats, and hooded sweatshirts as much as the next guy...but sometimes I like to "class" it up everynow and again. Â I know it's to be expected when living in a beach community.
The drinks prices are what you'd expect them to be in a place that doesn't want to be inundated with too many people. They do have a solid selection of alch options.
There are different levels, which give the place a bit more class. It's worth checking out if the places at Pier Plaza feel as though they are missing something.
It is so freaking hard to find house music in LA with a good crowd. Luckily, Ocean Bar has provided the mecca that I've been looking for on Friday and Saturday nights. There's typically somewhat of a line, and occasionally a $10 cover, but it's all worth it. (this review is for what's on the 2nd floor, not the 1st. That's union cattle.)
The DJs always drop the best tunes - uplifting house and top 40 hit remixes. The crowd is great - local beachgoers and people who are into the music. The ratio is usually pretty good too, even at the end of the night. Furthermore, the place isn't too big, so there's not a lot of table service going on, which means plenty of room on the dance floor and no issues with having to avoid certain areas and bumping into bouncers. On top of that, you can always go chill out on the 3rd floor with firepits and a view of the ocean.
The drink prices aren't too bad, although of course they are on the high side for what's in the area. But when you compare to Hollywood and the Westside, it's definitely well priced.
If you're looking for some good dance action in the Southbay, or even in LA, I highly recommend checking out Oceanbar.
Ocean Bar is crackin. Iv'e been here twice and yeah it's always packed, but you have a good time. It's right above Union Cattle. You'll always see them hermosa locals.
Every night I've been there, the DJ was good, chill music. Full bar downstairs, up stairs and on the top deck for all you smokers. Still haven't experienced sunday funday, but one of these days I will.
I would definitely come with a couple heads and try to get in soon, and beat the line. It's also helpful to start meeting and being cool with the bouncers, people who work there etc. They might pull some strings for you, and make your long line experience , shorter.
and also what still trips me out is the resturoom downstairs, aside being actually clean, they have a guy give out napkins when you're down pissin and a ton of gum, candy, etc for you to get. Craziness.
Party at Ocean Bar
