Recently saw Pretty Lights here and theres some things that need to be pointed out. The venue itself is really nice. Its open, theres lots of space so you dont feel too cramped, and the ambiance is similar to something you'd find out in California with palm trees and sand around the place. Â The organization getting into the door was a little confusing with two lines, neither of which were marked so you didn't really know where will call was or where people had to go if they already had tickets. Security was REALLY light getting in, which was surprising. Only after getting through the door did we realize that none of us were patted down- which is a plus if you want to bring a flask inside, but a negative if someone brings a gun inside...
The cost of the drinks were unbelievably high, with shots being $10 each (to their credit, they were strong) a vodka red bull was $14 and bud-light bottles were $6 (the most economic choice). By the end of the night we had spent about $90 on drinks alone, which is ridiculous considering it was $50 a ticket to get into the show. Â
The sound system is alright if you are right in the middle of the pit. Once you back out of the mass crowds of people (like we did later in the night) it gets a little muddled and hard to hear. I think this has something to do with the massive open space, but its unfortunate. Maybe putting speakers all around the venue, instead of just by the main stage would help this problem.
To quickly comment on the people that go to this place, I would second most of what everyone on here has said. Although, there were LESS jersey shore wanna-bes than I was expecting. Because the venue is so spacious, you can walk away from people if you wanted to. One thing that I did find was the crowd got very rude by the middle of the show. People were throwing elbows and walking through the crowd like there was no one there. I actually think I was holding 2 people up at one point, as if I doubled as a wall for them to lean against. So that was annoying (especially being 5'3....) Eventually we had to leave the large crowd to save from getting any more bruises, and decided to leave the show early.
All in all, the night was fun, Im glad I went, but would I do it again? Only if an incredible act back on tour for one time only was coming through....other than that, I think I've gotten my fill of the Ocean Club.
If we're comparing this place to clubs in other cities, then it's mediocre at best. Â However it is one of the best clubs in Boston and it has greatly improved the electronic music scene up here. Â Obviously the drinks are expensive so it doesn't factor in to this review.
The Good: Â
Outside and on the ocean
Has been getting some well known DJs to come through
21+ events
Decent light set up
Miami/Vegas feel to it
The Bad:
The sound system is NEED A LOT OF WORK. Â Yes, if you're upfront the music is good but it gets exponentially worse the further you move back. Â It needs more powerful speakers in the back to make up for lack of acoustics since it is outside.
Location. Â There is no easy public transit route without taking a taxi
1PM closing. Â This is probably more of a Quincy thing than OC.
For this type of venue, the show prices are ridiculous ($70 for Armin? laughable). But it is the second best option behind Royale
BEWARE: I've heard of stories where the headlining DJs play less than an hour and then leave.
Conclusion:
I would say Royale has a better club/rave feel as well as a better sound system than OC. Â OC definitely is unique and changes it up a bit and may be the only venue some of these DJs will play in the Boston area this year. Â If management could put a little more money into upgrades then this place could be excellent.
Also get rid of the fucking palm trees...we're in new england. Â You're not fooling anyone
Good:
-They seem to land some great DJs.
-Security folks were very courteous, which is a nice change from most places.
Neutral:
-It's an outside venue, which I like, but I can see that not being everyone's cup o' tea.
-The soundsystem isn't bad, no complaints there.
Bad:
-This place is SUCH a dudebro fest. To be fair, I probably brought it upon myself for going to see a DJ that falls under the realm of dubstep. I didn't know that such stereotypical bros existed in real life, complete with fake tanner, gel, and lots of bro hugs. Hilarious, but not really my type of scene.
-These damn kids and their iPhones at concerts. Why are you texting at a concert? Lame. Put your phone away and dance.
-The sand all over the place. Maybe this isn't so bad when the weather is good, but I went on a rainy night and by the end of things, my shoes and pants were covered in mud. Forget going anywhere post club, I looked ridiculous.
