This place was terrible.
I ordered some gnocchi with arribiata sauce. Little did I expect that the sauce would be made spicy using Jalapeños. I didn't know that Jalapeños were how you spice Italian sauce, but here we are. The gnocchi was heavy, drowned in Jalapeño marinara, and was almost inedible.
The tiramisu is served in a plastic dish, like what mass-produced deli meat comes in. It doesn't taste like tiramisu, but that's what they claimed it was.
My dining companion asked for her ravioli to be boxed up, which it was not- the waiter just took it away, never to be seen again. I count that as a blessing.
I had a good meal here once. I don't think I'm going to give it another chance anytime soon.
Looking for a reliably good Italian meal without all the crowds at the current trendy restaurant. Â Ordered the special-Jumbo Shrimp Parmesan-and was extremely happy with the preparation.Huge shrimps perfectly prepared topped with a marinara and cheese. Â Really delicious. Â My wife ordered the Chicken Piccata which was also nicely prepared.
Expect fresh food and attentive service by Juan and his family. Â Continue to highly recommend.
Ordered two of the specials on Friday, September 21st. Â OMG, the Salmon Piccata was outstanding. Â My husband had the lobster ravioli and wanted to lick the plate. Â
Last night we were there to share in their celebration of the restaurant being featured on The N Beat on ABC, Channel 7. Â It was a great evening with Luc and Sam who now own the restaurant after many years of working there. Â Great American success story. Â They always make you feel like family. Â Great food, great service, what more could you want.
I have been bed-ridden with a hybrid cold/flu for the past two days and since I just moved into my new apartment and have no groceries, I have been forced to resort to ordering delivery ("forced to"). So last night I decided I wanted to get some carbs to help this wave of bubonic plague pass.
I ordered the rigatoni alla vodka because from other yelp reviews, it looked like the most popular. Naturally I loved it, though it was enough to feed a family of 5. I will likely be eating it for the next 3 or 4 meals until I can't look at pasta again. The genoa salami is a nice touch to the vodka sauce (who doesn't like vodka sauce?) and the giant rigatonis. It also came with two giant rolls of homemade bread - I'm not sure if they thought the meal was for two people, but whatever I'm not complaining about more bread. It was good to eat with the pasta. I will also be eating that bread for like 2 more meals.
The only minor issue was that the delivery man went to the wrong building and bless his soul, went to my apartment number in the other building. But, the delivery was STILL 20 minutes before the projected time and he was nice and apologetic so I don't care. The food was still hot, and it was still early. All in all, a good experience and I will be ordering again maybe after I finish this one giant meal and then my appetite for pasta returns.
My wife and I have been here several times and the food is always fresh, homemade, and fantastic! Â We really love the chicken marsala and the rigatoni alla vodka, but everything we've tried is good. Â The rolls they bring out are out of this world and always freshly baked.
Atmosphere is very casual, and don't be turned off by simple decor. Â They have a full bar and a decent wine selection and the staff is great. Â This is a family run restaurant and we have talked to the owners and they are very passionate about what they do. Â Prices are very reasonable and with huge portions we always have leftovers.
We live in the neighborhood and can walk there but sometimes we're lazy and order delivery from here. Â They are always very fast to bring us hot food. Â We haven't tried the pizza but it looks good and we've heard they get a lot of pizza deliveries. Â This is definitely our go-to when we want Italian food and we couldn't recommend it any higher!
Such a great little Italian spot/cafe! Casual but makes you feel at home- the food was outstanding, my husband and I split a pasta and chicken sandwich and both were deliciousa. The bread they put on the table is also delicious. The staff is friendly, you almost feel like its family waiting on you- they were so sweet to us and to my son. Food came out quick, hot, fresh- loved it and the menu is huge so theres something there for everyone- prices were good too and complimented the portions. Will definitley be going back!!!
Review Source:I walk by here all the time when I take the dog out, and I just stare through the restaurant windows and look at all the people who are eating inside. Â While my mom was in town, I decided to redeem my http://grubhub.com coupon and ordered at this place. Â We were in the mood for pasta, and decided on the Rigatoni Arrabiatta, Rigatoni al Forno, and the Shrimp Linguine Provincial. Â They were all pretty good as the sauces were pretty flavorful. Â The prices are competitive to other Italian spots in the area, and would be a go to spot for me in the future if I'm too lazy to make it myself or a more complex pasta dish.
Review Source:Great rigatoni alla vodka. Â Portion was enough for a guy and a half. Bread is fresh baked and delicious, though unseasoned so dip it in olive oil or butter. Pasta came out piping hot. Â Also great was the tortellini alla panna, and the cavatelli (the rigatoni alla vodka was prolly my favorite tho - but vodka sauce is always hard to beat). There s a tv if u wanna watch sports. This is a more casual spot. Â Hard not to like a spot that's run by a family from grandfather down to child.
Review Source:First time eating at Oggi and the food was hot, fresh, & extremely tasty. Very good, personable service and laid-back atmosphere.
We ordered a small cheese pizza, house salad, and an order of spaghetti marinara.
It was almost like getting four meals for the price of two! A small cheese pizza was only $6.95 and was more than enough for both of us.
Pretty straight forward casual-Italian. Would go back in a heart beat.
Pleasantly Surprised!!
Boyfriend used to order take out from Oggi years ago when he wanted consistently decent Italian!
As far as the dine in experience goes, I WILL revisit when i am looking for large portions, traditional Italian flavors, casual dining.
The Cons:
-The wine list was less than stellar....considering there are about 300 different bottles of wine lining the walls in the 20 table joint i was a little disappointed. Â Additionally, the first Cab that came out we ended up sending back because save for the tannic bite, it was more liken to a Pinot (should be noted that this was a PERSONAL preference, and there was nothing wrong with the wine itself.....the second Cab was delightfully big and full)
-One of the Chile peppers used to add spice my entree somehow found its way into my mouth which....a lesser man would have cried, but thankfully i appreciate all levels of heat....just was not what I had planned on.
-20 or so tables, casual and thoughtlessly thrown together ambiance...a little tchotchke
The Pros:
-Very friendly and accommodating service (though not overly knowledgable about the menu items and wine list) our server felt so bad about the Chile pepper that sheer offered to buy me a dessert.
-The food is traditional, the portions are HUGE, the flavors are authentic and met all expectations. Yeast rolls are slightly under-baked (MY FAVORITE WAY!!) and delicious. Blue cheese dressing tasted homemade but i didn't ask.
-2 TVs if you care about the game.
-Affordable, and a fair amount of variety offered on the menu.
Notes:
The Rigatoni Arrabiata was delish!! Noodles were perfectly Al dente, salami was rich in flavor and the Jalepenos had just the right amount of heat vs. flavor. Â The Chile peppers were a nice addition in terms of heat...as long as you don't eat them. Â Chicken Marsala was BOMB. The portions are enough for a small family of 3, and the mushrooms/sauce was perfect. Light, creamy, tart and flavorful.
If you are having wine and have a particularly snooty palate ASK FOR A WINE SAMPLE!!!
Bon Appetit!!
I've been coming to Oggi's for over 15 years.
It is my solid, go-to Italian foods spot.
Dining in is fine.
Carryout is fine.
Very consistent.
Great dinners, and great pizzas. It is RARE that a place does both full dinner entree offerings AND pizza well. It's usually one or the other, where one will slack due to the popularity and frequency of the other. But not at Oggi's- again.. they are both done very well.
Lunch or dinner, Oggi's is consistent and exhibits very well crafted and prepared flavors for their foods.
Very solid and reliable.
Cheers
Was referred to this place when I publicly declared "THE WEST LOOP DOES NOT HAVE ANY GOOD THIN CRUST PIZZA DELIVERY".
I ordered a pie from Oggi. Â While it wasn't the best pizza I had, I have definitely found a good thin crust pizza joint. I love how they slice it in triangles but I just wish it was a little thinner, and less cheesey, and er more New York.
Great prices and fast delivery. Def worth a try!
I wrote an earlier review and gave Oggi's 1 star because of an incident that happened several months ago while I was dining at the bar. Â Within about two weeks of that review, I received an unexpected email from the owner, asking me to please come back in for lunch or dinner to patch things up. Â I never wanted nor expected to be contacted, so this was quite a pleasant surprise. Â I did go back in about a week or so later for a late lunch/early dinner of whitefish cacciatore and it was delicious. Â The son of owner and manager of Oggi and I had a chance to talk and it was one of those things, miscommunication and slight oversight on their part. Â We've made our peace and I will continue to go back to Oggi when I need a comfortable, neighborhood Italian spot to go to. Â
I've been back there since on a particularly stormy summer night and had the linguine with red cream sauce.... SO GOOD and perfect for a stormy night. Â Don't forget the Oggi buns, they are completely delicious on their own or try the triple dunk, olive oil, parmesan, salt. Â
I completely appreciate that the owners of Oggi reached out to me to made good on a frustrating situation, and I will continue to support them.
i received a coupon in the mail for 1/2 off ANY size pizza at this place. I just tried ordering an XLarge Sausage and a drink and was refused service bc they said my order wasn't large enough for delivery? How could that possibly make sense when they were the ones who sent out the coupon? It wasn't like I was trying to order a small pizza, it was an EXTRA LARGE. Still bc the coupon took half off the price which made it $14 they REFUSED to deliver it.
GUYS GET YOUR STUFF TOGETHER!
This food is a blessing to all Chicagoans!
A total stranger recommended this place when I posed a question about a great neighborhood Italian place. We came for our 19th anniversary. I must admit I was nervous about it when I walked in and noticed the casual pizza place vibe. Our waiter/and owner Sam came introduced himself. We ordered the grilled octopus and artichoke salad to start. The octopus was outstanding with an awesome sauce. My husband ate the rolled breaded steak and I had the whitefish with jalapenos. The food was amazing and prices very affordable.
Needless to say we came back Friday night with our daughter. Sam and his sons greeted us. We ordered the calamari and a salad, which Sam served family style, fetuccini alfredo, rotolo and lasagna. Wonderful, scratch food!
Good. Good. Food.
Oggi Trattoria is a casual/home-spun Italian place with prices just a bit too high for the atmosphere. Â This, however, should be overlooked because the food is fantastic.
The handful of times we've been there, we've never had the same dish twice, but everything my wife and I have ordered has been tasty. Â The gnocchi and the tortellini alla panna were the best examples of each that we've had in Chicago and remain the strongest favorites, for us.
Dining in is better than takeout, but takeout from here is better than most other takeout Italian that I've had, so it's still a win in my book.
I've been ordering delivery and carry out for years, and have been to the actual restaurant on numerous occasions since my last review.
The last two times that I've ordered from here for delivery, the order has been wrong. Â VERY annoying. Â This last time it showed up after an hour of waiting instead of the quoted 30-45 minutes. Â With a botched order. Â
Plus, the kitchen recently was shut down for "renovations" which always scares me... although I did try to look up and see if they got any health code violations and I couldn't find any. Â Thank god. Â
Still.... re-opening after a week or two with no visible changes or explanation is a little sketchy.
Eating in the restaurant is not the best atmosphere, service is generally pretty bad. Â Â
The bread and pizza are both still delicious, the gnocchi has been a little gummy the last few times I've ordered it.....
Oggi, sorry to say it, but you're officially out of rotation for a while. Â
I'll give you some time to improve your ordering skills and food consistency, and maybe I'll try you again...
I used to live in Ukr. Village and was a regular at Oggi's. Last week the hubby & I were craving Italian and discovered that they deliver to Bucktown.....yippee......I think.
I used to LOVE this place now I strongly like it. The bread is still by far the best I've ever tasted, but my dish didn't wow me like before. We both got the fettucini with spicy red sauce & shrimp. There wasn't nearly enough sauce. I like to dip the bread in the sauce, I was afraid that if I did that there wouldn't be enough left for my pasta, I will continue to dine at Oggi's but now I know to ask for extra sauce.
It is time for an Oggi update. Â I've been Oggi-ing it up since long before I had ever heard of Yelp. Â What? Â There was a time before Yelp? Â I can't even imagine such a world....
Anyway, I still pretty much only ever get the chicken marsala, and would eat a phone book covered in that sauce. Â I have had the pizza a few times which is solid and I will always love the calamari. Â
Right now they have $6 bottles of house wine, and let's face the facts, I'm cheap, and I'm a wino. Â This is the ideal situation for a gal like me. Â Where else can you get two entrees, a bottle of wine, excellent bread, and a room full of awesome regulars for only $36 plus tip? Â
Side note: Â I did not eat the two entrees myself. Â My boyfriend ate one. Â In fact, I only ate half my dinner. Â Just in case you were going to brand me as piggish.
I've never had a bad dining experience here. It's always fantastic and a good place for a very casual dinner or lunch. Really friendly service. The pizza is always good and the spaghetti and meatballs are super delicious. I seem to forget about this place a lot because there are always so many places I want to try but this is an excellent place. Â
I once was eating at Bella Notte right next to this place and was sooooo wishing I could have gone back in time 60 minutes and gone to Oggi instead. I love the laid back atmosphere of the place and the very reasonable prices.
I can't believe I have yet to write a review of my favorite neighborhood spot. Since we moved into the 'hood 3 years ago, we've been fans of this classic Italian- American family restaurant. That pretty much sums up the feel of the place- Red checked tablecloth (vinyl, of course), Parmesan cheese on the table, etc. Â The service is friendly if not super fast, the prices are more than reasonable considering the portion sizes. But what's really great is the food. Don't get me wrong, it's not Spiaggia. It's old school Americanized Italian food- Rigatoni ala vodka, Chicken Parm, etc. Â I love their red sauce and the pasta dishes are all pretty solid.
The fiance and I dined here last night- he had the chicken parm (which is really good), I had the chicken florentina. Â I was going to get some heavy, creamy pasta, but thought I should go for something healthier. Â Little did I know, my chicken, which was described as being served with spinach, mushrooms and zucchini in a white wine sauce, was COVERED IN CHEESE . Â A real health nut may have been annoyed, but since I wanted something cheesey anyway, I was pleased. And everything was very tasty. And we both had more than enough to bring home.
Basically, Oggi is a great neighborhood comfort-Italian place. Â A great place with great food an no pretension.
Ok, I really don't want to write this review, because I don't want you all crashing my favorite Friday night dinner spot, but it would be unfair to not sing their praises.
Best damned meatballs in the city. Â The cavatelli is better than my mom's, only I can't tell her that. Â If you don't do carbs, order the Chicken Vesuvio, but ask for peas (they don't put them in unless you ask) or the Chicken Marsala, they are amazing.
The service is great. Â Many of the waitstaff are family and they are wonderful and warm and attentive.
Parking - easy. Â Prices - reasonable. Â And they now have 1/2 price bottles of wine every night. Â
I love this place.
GNOCCHI! GNOCCHI! GNOCCHI!
Yes! Awesome! Delicious! Notice how everything is ending with an exclamation point? It's that good.
It's heavy food, and not anything I'd crave in summer but since Chicago is cold or rainy 9 months out of the year, it's perfect. I've never sat down to eat here but I have picked food up and gotten delivery. It is a little pricey for a take out Italian food but in winter, it's well worth it and VERY filling.
1. I knew we would do Oggi Trattoria again (this time dining in).
2. I knew it would be bumped (at least) another star.
Right on both accounts. Â
Off the top, this place is great for folks with kids...and that's not to say it's running rampant with toddlers kicking, screaming and running around. Â The place just has a nice open, active and bustling air about it; a sort of place you know people and family's are having a good time eating, drinking and overall enjoying themselves. Â
The missus, myself and bambino came with another couple and their 2 y.o plus a few other friends and ate, drank and just chilled for a few hours. Â
Food went as follows: Â Buddy swears by the Chicken Sardignola, only thing he orders there and polished his plate clean (i assume it was good). Â Spag and meatballs for the traditionalist at the table "lacked seasoning" but overall not bad. Their Rigatoni Alla Vodka (wife's choice) was exquisitely delicious as always as was the Gnocci for another guest.
I went w the Pasta Alla Pescatore and it was fantastic. It was a linguine in marinara mixed with shrimp, calamari and freshly chopped baby clams...total 5/5 and enough for another full on meal the next day (as were most of the pasta dishes). Kids shared a small Pizzetta but were more interested in driving Thomas the train, dump "guks" and Cars all up and down the table.
Love the area, the food, the place - will be back again.
Yep, this place is mostly a trattoria. Â And for a trattoria, it is only just meh. Â For that reason, I probably won't be coming back. Â Such a shame, so close to my house!
Wikipedia defines trattoria as "an Italian style of restaurant, less formal than a ristorante. There are generally no printed menus, the service is casual, the prices low, and the emphasis is on a steady clientele rather than on haute cuisine. The food is modest but plentiful and is served family-style (i.e. at common tables); Â Optionally, trattoria food may be bought in containers for taking home."
We were looking for casual, and Oggi delivers that. Â We were also looking for low priced spaghetti & meatballs, which according to the website (posted above) we were promised - BUT somewhere along the way $8 became $11 for a simple plate full of noodles with the most bland and boring meatballs I have tasted in my life. Â I am sorry, I went for simple, modestly priced Italian food and the bait and switch was pulled! Â The server was attentive enough, but probably would have been friendlier if we had spoken his native tongue.
This place is nothing to write home about when it comes to the simplest of dishes that I judge any Italian eatery by. Â Perhaps it is all about the calzones for take-out, and I just am missing out with my disdain for breadiness, but ultimately I can't see what all the other reviewers above are raving about. Â
Oggi isn't a bad place, but it isn't anything to write home about either.
I've never actually eaten in here. So why review it... I've gotten take-out/delivery from here many many many times. I'm not giving it five stars since I haven't eaten INSIDE this restaurant. So, this review is just on the food.
The food is fantastic! Everything I've ever ordered has been great, but the pizza takes the cake! The thin crust is always cooked just crunchy enough and there is always a plethora of toppings over cheese ratio.
The true test of pizza is not how it tastes when it's hot though, it's how it tastes the next day. Leftover's is the way I judge my pizza and this place wins my vote. Don't get me wrong it's so good there aren't often leftovers, but when there are I'm stoked in the morning! The pizza is great cold and twice as good reheated in a toaster oven =)
PS Delivery has always come quickly and hot!!
The best!!
i can't say enough about the consistent quality and great taste of the food at Oggi.
There is a large selection of everything from big salads to seafood. Wonderful pasta selections and all of the dishes traditionally made with veal, can also be made with chicken and vice versa....That's so great for those of us who don't do red meat!!!
yum!!
Try anything on the menu, you won't be disappointed and you will have leftovers for sure!!! Please don't pass on the bread basket, those rolls are sooooo good, warm and homemade and delicious!!!!
We used to live very close to Oggi, and we went all the time. Â Now we are in the burbs...sigh. Â The ambiance is very casual, but the food is quite authentic and consistently good.
I cannot seem to go there without ordering the Rigatoni Alla Vodka(mmm....Genoa salami), but these reviews are making me want to try the pizza, too. Â I also really like their Bruschetta. Â My vegetarian husband is addicted to the Rotolo Primavera. Â We also tend to eat way too much bread here. Â We are going to a concert in that neighborhood tonight...Oggi, here we come!
I am sad that Oggi is so far from my house. Or maybe I should be happy, because if I lived closer, I would eat here more often, and be fatter than I am.
As soon as I walked in, I knew this was the place for me. Very cute and cozy cafe setting, comfy without being precious, very laid back. A good place for a casual dinner after the theater, which is how I ended up here. The service can be a little "laid back" as well, but the servers are friendly as hell, so I'll cut them some slack.
Nice big menu of standard Italian favorites. It's your basic "red sauce" kind of place, but the red sauce is good, so who's complaining? And the portions are huge. I got the penne arrabiata last night, and after eating more than I should have, I still had half a plate left. My companion had the fish special, which came with a massive serving of vegetables.
Oggi's is basically an Italian diner, so four stars here means something very different than four stars at Bella Notte, next door. I'm not likely to make a special trip down here just for dinner -- it's a long ride on the Ashland bus. But if I'm in the hood, it's going to be high on my list of places to go.
I first tried Oggi on a recc from a friend. Â This was one of the first big tests of our food friendships. Â I get scared when I get a food recc from a friend and then it's bad. That means I can never trust him/her again! It's so sad.
Luckily, that was not the case for Oggi. Â He suggested the chicken parmesan sandwich and it was good. This is one huge sandwich. Â You can definitely split it and be happy with the amount of food you had.
Also, their pasta in vodka sauce was pretty good too.
EDIT: Wait! I forgot maybe the most important thing! Their panzerotis. Â If you like calzones, imagine them deep fried oooooozzzzziiinnnnggg with cheese.
Don't think about the calories/fat content, just eat it and be happy.
I miss being able to get delivery from this place. It's not the most spectacular Italian eatery, but for what you pay it is really pretty good. Very much homestyle Sicilian which touches a soft spot in this NYer's heart.
The pizza is very very East Coast, to the tune of resembling Lombardi's (the first registered pizzeria in the US). It's a thin crust that resembles music paper bread, but has a yeasty dough to it where it's gently burnt on the bottom and the layer by the cheese is slightly undercooked. The sauce is an acidic simple pizza sauce with a few herbs, but nothing ornate. The cheese is a stretchy mozzarella of sorts that's more light than dense with much less salt than your average Chicago pizza. If you like Chicago style pizza, you might not like this pizza because it's kind of the complete opposite.
If it's late and Bari's down the street is closed, this is also a great place to get a sandwich. Specifically my favorite being the eggplant parmigiana. Thin slices of eggplant in a crunchy breaded coat with the same sauce and cheese from the pizza on top in a crusty Italian bread. Absolutely delicious.
Everything is also fast here. Nothing I ordered ever took more than 20 minutes to pick-up.
I am giving Oggi five stars for the best italian beef I have ever had. They serve it on a giant crusty french loaf and it just melts in your moth. I'm drooling thinking about this - and I just ate!
They get bonus points for good onion rings and decent pizza. Oh - and they have the best family restaurant web site of all time. True story!
I wanted to really like Oggi's since I live closer to it than any reviewer on here. I've given it a couple of tries. The ravioli isn't bad. The pizza isn't very good. They must use as little ingredients as possible in their food. The pizza is so thin and has so little sauce, it's like you're eating flat bread with some cheese sprinkled on top.
One last note for everyone to mull over - the ravioli gave me diarrhea.
