Those who know me know that I am far from the biggest fan of sushi. Â It's not that I don't like sushi, it's just that I don't think there is enough variation of taste between specific sushi items or between different sushi restaurants. Â
So anyways, I'm probably a bit overly critical of sushi joints, but they are pretty ubiquitous and homogenous. Â So when one like Bob San offers nothing special but charges significantly more, I feel it is more than deserving of a below average rating. Â It's not bad, it's just not especially good and it's expensive, and with all the sushi options there are in Chicago I see no reason to go to Bob San.
As an aside: I used to live right around the corner at 1137 N Wood St. Â One weekday night around midnight (hours after they closed) I was walking home from somewhere and there was a line of about 50 people waiting to get into Bob San. Â This bizarre mystery haunts me to this day and I'm hoping that someone can shed some light on it. Â Please, someone tell me what they were waiting in line for! Â The curiosity is slowly eating away at my insides.
I have been meaning to write a review about this place since it is my all time favorite place for fresh sushi. Â My favorites are the super white tuna and salmon sashimi. Â Their cuts are fresh and so succulent. Â I have yet to find a japanese restaurant that cuts their sashimi the way they do (which makes a big difference). Â Bob, the owner, is usually there with his cheery attitude and the rest of their staff is also very friendly and knowledgable. Â Their prices are very reasonable for what you are getting. Â My only reservation is that their kitchen food is just average. Â I go just for their sushi and sashimi...oh and their sake.
