I ordered take-out the other night and I was incredibly disappointed. The Jerusalem Salad was completely doused in a sauce, making it completely unauthentic and drastically cutting down on the amount of the actual salad. They put way too much olive oil and the hummus- we actually had to pour a good amount off. The falafels were good though- great flavor and and nice and crisp on the outside. I'm guessing the food is better if you eat in  but I don't care to find out because I was sick the next morning.
Review Source:I've always wanted to try this place... Been living in downtown Evanston for the past 2.5 years but never ventured inside. Finally visited a few days ago, and I enjoyed their food! Ordered a spicy chicken pita pocket as well as a pizza. The pizza was okay - decent, but nothing too special. However, I really enjoyed my pita pocket! The sauce was good, they were generous with the chicken, and the price was really good! (filled me up for around $6). Will be back to try some other dishes!
Review Source:Incredible value, warm, mouth-watering homemade food, extremely friendly staff. What more can you want??
I've been here more times than I can count, and I love it every time I go. The wait staff are so friendly that they recognize me and know some of my typical orders. The food is healthy and authentic and doesn't leave you with that gross bloated feeling that restaurants frequently give a person. Also, BYOB. Definitely a must!!
I will say I have had much better Middle eastern food. Â I would rather drive down to Pita Inn@Demspter then eat here.
The food is really dry and the service is not that good. Even the space felt tight (people moving to tables make you get up)
I had Veg Plate and my friend had chicken dish. Not a great experience for ether of us. Even their Baklawa was not worth it.
Not recommended unless you really want one
This place has affordable and delicious lunch. Â The lunch specials are a great deal and you get a lot of food. Â They also include a drink, which is always nice. Â The restaurant is also BYOB if you come for dinner.
I really like the falafel sandwich lunch special. Â I also really like the chicken shawarma I have never been disappointed by this Middle Eastern staple. Â Great for NU students who may be on a budget. Â
Fun tip - If it is nice out, you can order it to go and walk a few blocks to the picnic benches on the Evanston lakefront.
When I repeatedly patronize a restaurant, consistency is almost as important as the quality of the food and service. Olive Mountain is fastidiously consistent, while delivering delicious food, charmingly professional service, great variety, OK atmosphere, and good local delivery service. Having had almost everything on their extensive menu over the last 10 years, I think their lamb shank really stands out. All Middle Eastern stand-bys are great: creamy hummus, smoky babba, fresh rolled grape leaves, fava (fooel), okra, etc. For something different try their fattah, which is like a savory bread pudding; or, for something spicy, try Shank Leesh with pita, with your appetizers - it's like feta and hot sauce mashed up. Kifta kabob and chicken ticka are outstanding. The chicken schwarma is very well-roasted, but a little dry, so it's best as a topping for the hummous, or as a sandwich with juicy tomatoes and tahini sauce. I actually like it that way (who wants rare poultry anyway?) Another area where they deserve bonus points: drinks and deserts are not overpriced, coffee is decent. Fresh-squeezed orange juice and carrot juice are excellent. Overall, I give these guys four stars for the food on any given day, but up them to five for being so consistent for so many years, such a great deal, and so NICE to do business with.
Review Source:One of my favorite restaurants in Evanston! Lebanese House Salad with their house dressing is so tasty and always great. My favorite entrees are the Chicken Ticka and Combination Platter, which are served with rice, potatoes and roasted veggies- carrots, green peppers and tomatoes. Â The Chicken Ticka is juicy, spicy and always prepared to perfection. And the rice is to die for!!! I've never had rice that was so flavorful and tasty! This place is BYOB and the server Mike is ALWAYS very pleasant and ALWAYS very gracious and accommodating, which makes the entire dining experience that much more enjoyable.
If you are looking for a fine dining restaurant with lots of fancy decor then wait and go to Olive Mountain when you want a casual BYOB dining experience with excellent food and great service from Mike.
Olive Mountain is a must go to even if it's out of your way!
Weekends at work are rough. I'm usually not up early enough to pack a lunch, which means that I'm stuck with the fare of downtown Evanston.
Olive Mountain is one of my favorite go-to's for lunch. They have lunch specials that make me feel like I'm getting a good deal and the food is pretty darn good. Plus it's easier to be healthy, which is always an issue when you eat out.
I like their chicken tikka, although I think it could be spicier (then again I'm used to a different level of spice so no fault). I've enjoyed their lamb, kifta kabab, and chicken shwerma (although it's different than what I'm used to). They have a grilled fish of the day plate that was a tasty grilled salmon. I love their "white sauce". Falafel is decent, hummus is excellent, and the lentil soup is delightful (take note though, it's pureed). Even the side salad I've had before is good. Pita bread is definitely bought but it's good for store bought and frankly, you don't NEED pita bread. The food is all so good you just want to shove it straight into your mouth, sans "dumbing it down" with bread.
They've always been incredibly fast and courteous. I only ever get food to go but the atmosphere feels nicely casual. Everything is well prepared and the meat is always tender and cooked to perfection. It may not blow your mind but it will definitely be a meal you enjoy and one you may wish to have again.
This is my favorite place in Evanston! If you just walk in and sit down, you would not be impressed by the decor because it feels like you are sitting at your grandparent's house, but the food is so fresh and delicious that it gets addicting fast. They give you generous portion sizes, and I highly recommend coming in for dinner versus ordering out because you get an appetizer/soup or salad/entree/drink all for $10.95. It is a really great deal because you are bound to leave with leftovers. Usually take-out is about $15 for a salad or soup, plus entree. Also, the people that work here seem really honest and understanding about things, so if there is something you don't like they will give you something new without complaint.
Review Source:Nothing really bad can be said about our meal at Olive Mountain but for some reason I'm left a little, ehh.
I shared a good meal with my boyfriend with way more food than we needed, everything was pretty tasty but nothing much was a stand out, except for the falafel. I suppose I just have had better middle eastern food elsewhere.
They bring pita to the table and I have to say its pretty bad, unacceptable. Tastes like white bread, bad flavor, dry, not pillowy, soft awesomeness. I feel like this is something they need to get right.
Apps-
The falafel was very very very good. Probably the best Ive had, best flavor, not dry. The tahini served with it was just right, not too caustic as I sometimes find it.
The spinach pie with feta was OK, I was picturing spanakopita so I guess thats my problem - no flaky phyllo - the dough was a little too doughy, not quite right, Â not flaky like I wanted, filling good but not OMG YES.
Entree-
Boyfriend ordered the combo plate with chicken ticka (a little dry, not too interesting), chicken kebab (very moist, very flavorful, loved it), beef kifta (bland, not enough spice) and beef kebab (tender, flavorful, like eating very good steak) all served over rice and veggie. Veggies were disappointing, oily, not very flavorful and the rice was also not very flavorful. Â All in all the boyfriend was glad he ordered it because it told him what meat was good and what meat wasn't, basically the kebab meats are awesome.
I ordered the vegetarian combo. The babaganoush  was very good, creamy, sturdy, yummy. The hummus was good but not stand out amazing, just normal good. The Tabbouleh was very good, very minty making it probably the better of what I've tasted. Again served with falafel which were still great. The stuffed grape leaves were good but a little salty - kind of too rich to eat more than one (you get 3), they have a beefy, meaty quality. All in all a good vegetarian plate but I've had this elsewhere done all around better. Plus the crummy pita is my main device for shoveling this food into my mouth so that detracts from this plate.
Both entrees were served with soup or salad, we both chose Lentil soup - it was okay. In desperate need of salt and no visible lentil in sight - meaning it was so pureed or smashed that it wasn't like eating a bean soup - maybe this is how they serve it but I enjoy the texture of eating a lentil soup, not a pureed soup. Doesn't detract from the flavor though, it had good flavor, but just reallllly needed salt.
All in all I don't mean to be so negative. It was a good meal, we left well fed with tons of leftovers. Nothing was really bad (expect the pita) ..... I just wasn't really wowed by much and feel that I have had better middle eastern food at other restaurants in Chicago (even chains such as Naf Naf).
Think of this as a gourmet version of Pita Inn. Â They serve the standard Middle Eastern fare and several other items you typically don't see on menus of similar restaurants.
The appetizers and salads are amazing ad and there is an endless variety of them to choose from. Â Seriously, they offer like 20 different types of salads alone. Â Their hummus, baba ghannouj, tabbouleh, and falafel are all outstanding. Â I especially love the thick, creamy tahini sauce and yummy yellow rice that accompanies the falafel and entrees. Â
Pita pocket sandwiches are also good but I would avoid the chicken ticka which is drenched in an insane amount of hot sauce. Â One knock against them is their pita bread isn't as fresh as Pita Inn's who bake theirs on premises. Â
Kefta and chicken shawarma are tasty, but I wasn't as impressed with the other kabobs. Â Seemed to be a bit on the dry side. Â Never tried dessert, but I like the fresh squeezed orange juice and iced tea here.
I'd like to give 4 stars to this restaurant.
I ordered Chicken Shawerma with Rice. Soup and Coke were included. It's my first time to try Lebanese food, but I was really satisfied with these foods. The chicken was fresh and the soup was really delicious. The quantity of each portion was enough to be full even some of us ordered the box to go. And the serving was wuite fast. But I'd like to point out the refill of drink is not free!
It's a nice asian food restaurant and I recommended to the others.
This place offers really authentic Middle Eastern food and at lunch the prices are crazy cheap. A great falafel sandwich, delicious side of hummus and a beverage is under $6. That's nuts! PLus, it's full table service, and the owner is always there to make sure things go right. Great restaurant.
Review Source:Olive Mountain serves the best darn kibbeh in ChicagoLand. Their dolma (stuffed grape leaves) and hummus are also very good. For lunch, I will often order their falafel pita sandwich stuffed with fried potatoes, which is outstanding. I have also enjoyed their baked spinach pies, but their tagin for me was only so-so. The ingredients at Olive Mountain are always fresh, and the service is always friendly and efficient. The prices, especially for lunch, are quite reasonable. I am not too crazy about the restaurant's decor, which I find to be gaudy, but no matter. If they keep serving such good food, and at these sensible prices, I can learn to love the decor and use it as a model for my apartment.
Review Source:Good place for a quick dinner and catch-up with friends. Â I ordered the Fresh Basil pizza for $7.25 and it was a good size for one person that was rather hungry i.e. me! :) Â My friends ordered the falafel pitas and wraps and seemed to be satisfied.
I like this place because they can split checks (a plus for large groups), it is cheap and they don't look at your group crazy when you're a little loud! :)
I've decided to give them 5 stars because THIS IS WHAT ETHNIC MIDDLE EASTERN FOOD IS. I've been to many other middle eastern/Mediterranean restaurants and they all server food one dull way. I've lived in the middle east and I've been searching for the authentic food made the way its made back home. I found it at The Olive Mountain. I tried the Chicken Ticka dinner entree and it was SPICY! Now I can handle spices no doubt but this was something. The rice was made exactly to the perfection, soft and long grains.
If you ever want to get AUTHENTIC ethnic middle eastern food, I recommend this place. I'll be back there soon !!!
I will go to the mountain and back, the Olive Mountain, that is, for DELICIOUS Middle Eastern food. Had our monthly office lunch here 2 weeks ago, and, everything was absolutely perfect. They were more than happy to reserve a table for our party of 15, which, in a place of this size meant we took up a good number of tables. They are very popular for lunch, and with a full restaurant they took great pains to serve us in a timely manner. Our waiter, Mike (I think)? A total riot! He was organized, together, quick, and didn't mess up or forget anything. We are seriously considering stealing him and adding him to our team!
They have great lunch specials, ranging from $6.95-$8.95, and for that you get hummus, salad, or soup, a main dish, and a beverage. Their hummus is delicious: creamy, garlicky, and fresh, served with warm pita. The lentil soup is equally good, and I can't wait to have it again. Everyone in our group had one of the lunch specials, and everyone loved what they had. I've already been back twice for lunch, and, next time I'll be going for a BYOB dinner. Love this place!
I really enjoy this place. Â The food is good, well priced and quite plentiful (holy hummus!! Â I was almost disappointed when our entrees arrived... awwww....I have to stop eating the hummus now?) AND it's BYOB. Â That's enough to make this girl and her tummy quite the happy campers.
However, I honestly think the standout element is the service. Â The gentleman who waited on us was incredibly friendly, attentive and helpful in making our choices. Â It was obviously that he clearly cared about our experience.
I like Olive Mountain. The food is pretty good and reasonably priced. Most of the employees are super friendly.
HOWEVER, there is one waitress in particular who is terrible. This is the second time I've gone and had her. Originally, I thought maybe she was just having a bad day, but it's now been months since then and it's happened again! So I felt inclined to write a review. I don't know what it is that's she doing, but she seems to ignore us unless we specifically call her over. She takes forever to do everything: take our order, bring our food, bring the check ... everything! Â I'm not sure how long it would have taken if we didn't complain and constantly ask the other waiter to go get her. I'm disappointed in her service and it's a shame because I've had the other waiter before and he's awesome! I guess I'll try to get one of his tables next time.
I'd like to apologize to the rest of the people on the purple line while I stuffed my face with the chicken tikka...the smell probably made you jealous even if the sight was uncouth.
Wow. The food was insanely good. Great level of spice, seasoned with skill, and the rice and chicken were both perfectly cooked. The waiter was beyond friendly--he told me I'd be back after having the tikka, and he was so right
I'm probably Olive Mountain's biggest fan. Well, at least Mike's biggest fan.
The food here is good and incredibly affordable. It's not a 5-star restaurant and it doesn't pretend to be, so I'm not sure what some people are complaining about. I always enjoy my pita pockets and pizzas there. It's just as a good place for college students as it is for families, and it accommodates large groups. Plus it's BYOB. What's not to love?
The best part of Olive Mountain, and the reason is deserves 5 stars, is Mike. Mike has to be the friendliest waiter I have ever met. He is always smiling and happy, always making sure you have everything you need, and never too busy to stop to chat. I even went here for my birthday. That's how much Mike rocks.
I love this restaurant because the food is very consistent, and the owners are wonderful people. The lunch specials are a steal, since you get an appetizer, drink, and an entree.
I recommend their lentil soup (!!!), hummus, or felafels for appetizer choices. Their entrees are pretty solid, though I find that their meats to be a little dry sometimes. Nonetheless, I enjoy their catch of the day and kifta kabob with rice plates.
Come for the food, stay for the attentive service, even during busy hours.
I love this place! the portions are huge, the servers are nice and the food has always been good. For Evanston, this is a pretty good restaurant.
I've gotten the combination platter and shish kabob beef entrees. My favorite is their beef because it's so tender and so flavorful. Whatever they use to marinade the beef is just to die for. I liked the chicken and kifta that came with my combo platter, but I prefer the beef much better. Â The middle eastern rice and vegetables that come with the entrees are also very good.
I always have leftovers for lunch the next day, so that's always something to look forward to. haha.
Also, NU students, don't forget to show your wild card! They don't usually remind you, but we get 10% off.
I was meeting a friend for lunch and being that he's an Evanston resident, I asked him to pick a restaurant. He suggested Chili's or Buffalo Wild Wings... d'oh! A flawed proposition for this local business junkie. "How about something less corporate?" That didn't bode too well with the fragile male ego so I turned to my Yelp app. A nearby Middle Eastern eatery with a solid 4-star rating popped up... and that is how we landed on Olive Mountain!
As others mention, it's a cozy, simple space: No frills, just great food and genuinely affable service. We both jumped on the lunch specials - hummus with chicken shawerma for me, the shish kabob lamb with rice for my friend. Both meals included a choice of soup, salad, hummus or falafil for $6.95 and $7.95 respectively plus a drink! Crazy inexpensive, huge portions, and everything from my lentil soup to the warm, fresh pita bread to the delicately-spiced chicken shawerma was dead-on delicious. Oh, and the food was unexpectedly plated quite beautifully!
I can't wait to return so I can try the baba ghanouj, a Middle eastern restaurant's ultimate test of validity in my book. Will Olive Mountain turn out to actually be worthy of 5-stars? Check back with me soon... I'm all over it with a bottle of wine (BYOB, people!).
Olive Mountain, consider yourself climbed! After a long day of movie-going, homework, shopping, coffee and shivvering in the cold, my husband and I completed our tour de Evanston with a fine meal at Olive Mountain.
The decor of Olive Mountain could ceratinly be assisted with a change of wall color and light fixture changes (think vivid yellow or orange walls accented with green hues and gold or brass light fixtures)
I had the lentil soup and falafal salad and my husband had the combo plate and barely soup. We shared some warm pita and stuffed grape leaves.
Definitely worth checking out if you're in the area!
*Note: I have never actually sat down, I did take out (often) - and it was for the chicken and for the price.
If it weren't for my brother, I would have never found this place. It is definitely a tad bit hidden, I often walked by it without noticing.
However, I like the food. The chicken entrees are amazing and the prices reasonable. The way they season the chicken is so good! The prices are great! The chicken came with rice and salad and there is something in their rice and salad that make it so flavorful. I love mid-eastern styled rice and salads, it just might be a matter of preference. But I am going to be honest, I don't know about the rest of the menu... but I have had the Olive Mountain chicken at least once every two weeks for the past three months. I am actually craving it a bit now.
3.5 stars, I'd say.
I like Olive Mountain for good, affordable middle eastern food.
I've only ever eaten their appetizer platters and salads, so here's what I think: The falafel is perhaps the best I've ever eaten So delicious, really. Great tahini and humus as well. The salad is fine. Not the reason to go here, but it goes well with all the rest. Â
I really did not enjoy the grape leaves or the  baba ganouj - the consistency of the latter just seems wrong to me, and I usually love baba ganouj.
I don't enjoy the atmosphere or the waiters here, either. When I walked in to pick up my food, there were two male waiters standing by  the back wall, staring at me and ignoring me at the same time, how odd.
It was good to go home and a) eat in a more comfortable environment and b) throw their generic pita bread in the toaster oven for a minute - so much better!
I've ordered lunch here for a few business meetings at work, but this is the first time I tried it for myself.
I had a Chicken Kabob pita, and it was really good.
I've had better falafel, but it still wasn't bad. Â The Jerusalem salad is yummy.
I really like Middle Eastern food, and I would go back here.
Food is good, but silly man who has worked their for ages makes it even better.
I preferred their original location, but I still LOVE the fried mushrooms and falafels. Their lunch specials are crazy cheap and substantial and everyone is very nice.
The guy I'm talkin' 'bout is always rushing like a busy bee, even if there are only two occupied tables and he has 6 people backing him up. Everyone is "my friend"... and "Desserts are for sharing, because sharing is caring." Â Wacky, eager-to-please guy. Not enough of those around anymore.
We saw this little place while we were walking around Evanston one day and wanted to try it. Â It's a BYOB, but that didn't deter us.
We went in one evening and weren't charmed by the sterile atmosphere - it was a weeknight and only two other tables were filled. Â Didn't matter to us how many people were there, we just wanted to give it a spin. Â We did notice that other diners were native mediterraneans and seemed to know the staff, which is sometimes a good clue to whether a place is going to be good or not.
I ordered the hummus, grape leaves and mediterranean salad. Â Everything was delish - although they could have used Greek olives instead of regular black olives in the salad. Â The hummus was just the right consistency and very tasty. Â Grape leaves were served warm and were some of the best I've had since I moved back to Chicago. Â The salad dressing was also tasty - with the right amount of oil, lemon and spices. Â Best thing is they don't pile on any raw onions, which I believe only overwhelms a salad anyway.
My s-o had babaganoush, which he said was terrific. Â He also had a lamb pita, which he devoured. Â 5 stars for the first visit!
Second visit, we wanted to try dinner entrees. Â We decided to try an appetizer - the musabahaha - which is warm chickpeas and tahini with a very lemony taste (made like hummus but stronger on the lemon). Â We were really glad we tried a different appetizer so we could test it out.
Dinner, tho....what can I say? Â I ordered the paella, which was terrible. Â Rice was served on the side. Â The main dish was eggplant, green peppers, red peppers (neither was listed on the description or I would have steered clear), onions, carrots, fish of the day, shrimp and chicken in a tomato sauce. Â It actually sounded interesting and they were nice enough to omit the chicken when I asked. Â However.....the eggplant wasn't cooked enough, I had to pick out a plate of peppers and it wasn't as tasty as I imagined it to be.
My s-o ordered the lamb kabob medium rare and it came well-done with some kind of funky marinade he couldn't identify. Â
So, all in all, we think the Olive Mountain is great for appetizers and salad, so we're going to stick with them as our target here. Â Some suggestions for the Olive Mountain folks: Â
Serve warm homemade Pita bread - the packaged kind isn't as tasty.
Make sure your help closes the front door if they need to catch a breath of fresh air - keeping the inner door open while someone has the outer door open just makes dining a frozen experience.
Taking one star off for the dinners and pita bread - we believe the place has possibilities.
Wow I'm in shock with the 4-star rating too! This is NOT GOOD Lebanese food at all!
I miss Aladdin's in E-town! Olive Mountain has the driest food I've had, from hummus to pita to falafel, which is just so hard to swallow. I had 4 glasses of water just to down it all.
Please go to Pita Inn for good falafels, lentil soup and hummus!
4 stars? Not a good start for my first impression of Yelp - Chicago.
This was, from start to finish, badly done Lebanese food. But I could have guessed that from the Chicken Ticka (sic) on the menu. This is an Indian dish, my friends...
My shwarma was dry, the hummus tasted almost pickled, and the tabouli was 90% parsley. Give me more couscous! The pita, as several people have mentioned, was worse than most supermarket brands. I think the only redeeming things (which is why I generously give it two stars, but more likely 1.5) were the service and the babba ganoush/babba ganouj. Let's not get into their curious spellings...
This is where the star system kind of falls down because 1) the food is great, 2) the prices are really reasonable for what you get, 3) the service is friendly and the owner is really cool, but 4) the decor is flourescent lights and it feels like you're sitting in a coffee shop. Â So do I nail the place for feeling like I'm in Fred's Diner or do I keep it at 4-stars because it's so good? Â Whatever - give em' the 4-stars.
Anyways, seriously the food is quite good here; I've had kabobs, the falafel, various appetizers, salads - all very good. My only complaint is the pita - you can get such good pita bread even at the grocery store and this is the dry stuff that doesn't taste so hot. But walking out of there having eaten a pita with falafel and a tabouleh salad for around $6 on Davis St. in Evanston is impressive. There needs to be more places like this.
So very satisfying!! Friendly staff, cute and cozy interior (even the bathroom), amazing prices and of course -- delicious food.
We got:
-- "Lentil soup" - though veeeery  mild, goes well with the warm pita pockets
-- "Honey Chipotle BBQ Chicken" wrap - doesn't sound Meditteranean, I know, but it was VERY good! Definitely a take-out material.
-- "Shish Kabob Lamp" pita
-- "Combination Platter" - rice with samplers of Kifta Kabob (lamb), Chicken Shawerma, Shish Taouk (chicken kabob) and Shish Kabob Beef
If that's not enough protein, I don't know what is. Meat was all very juicy and tasty, except for the shredded chicken (shawerma) which was a bit too dry and tough to chew.
In any case, I've never been a repeater of a Middle Eastern restaurant, but I think that will change from now...
* Special thanks to Dee W for strongly recommending this place!!
Oooooooooh man. Â
Time to go to sleep. Â I just ordered takeout from this place because last time we went here we had rockstar service. Â The server was very excited that it was our first time so he took some extra time to talk about the dishes and was very receptive to our bottle of wine (it's a BYOB place).
Even for take-out the staff was wonderful.
The Hummos was great. Â Since it was the end of the night and they ran out of shwerma, they just put some chicken on there which was still delicious.
We had the Shish Kabob Beef and the Shish Taouk (Chicken Kabob) which was presented on a bed of soft middle eastern rice, cooked peppers, and thinly sliced potatoes. Â Each came with a small salad.
I'm still suffering from after-drool. Â
Great place to eat light and healthy (since the portions are definitely good enough for tomorrow's lunch, it's practically two meals). Â I just so happen to overstuff my pretty face.
Yes - a five star review from me and what put them up to five stars? Â Our waitor was really awesome - when he found out that it was our first time here, he was super friendly and suggested some great recs, and as Mr. Slapnuts (the fiance) put it, "the waitor didn't touch him" - he's noticed that waitors always touch him and it always irritates him (he doesn't mind when waitresses touch him though)
Anyway, back to the Olive Mountain - they're BYOB and no corkage fee. Â I saw a table with four wine bottles and a six pack of beer =) but we just had a bottle of pinot noir with us. Â We started off with a large chicken schwarma with humus and our waitor warned us not to eat too much pita bread but the pita bread was warm and cschwarma and humus was so good...
Then, with our entrees, we had a choice of soup or salad - we both went with the Lebanese House salad which was light and the house dressing - mint, lemon, and garlic - really amazingly good. Â Then, Mr.Slapnuts (the fiance) had the Chicken Ticka which he couldn't stop raving about how good it was. Â I couldn't make up my mind and just got the Combination Platter which included the Kifta Kabob (lamb, beef, etc), Chicken Schwerma, Chicken Ticka, and the Shish Kabob Beef and everything was cooked to perfection - even the rice was fluffy and perfect. Â We were way too full to enjoy dessert but Slapnuts did go ahead and get an iced coffee.
I'm very excited to have tried this place out in my neighborhood and even more excited that Mon-Thurs nights, they have this dinner special - $9.99 for a soup or salad, any entree, and any appetizer for one person - what a STEAL =) Â Oh, yeah - they're kid friendly, too - they have a special menu just for kids. Â Plus they do deliver and NU affiliates get a discount on top of that! Â They also have great lunch specials and lunch buffets so I will definitely be back for lunchtime.
EDIT: pictures are up! Â and lunch was such a great deal - for about $6.50 - you can get a drink (coffee, tea, soft drink), soup/salad/fallafil/or hummus, and a lunch sandwich/salad/entree - what a great deal!
The Olive Mountain was also reviewed in today's Chicago Trib - and got 3 Forks (out of a possible 4) under CHEAP EATS.
We used to eat here frequently - but have not tried it since the big move to Davis (mainly because we fell in love with Cafe Suron on Pratt in east Roger's Park - though we did stop in one night to check it out and the "new" upstairs space is quite appealing.)
The Trib reviewer offered high marks for most items on the menu - so beware - especially since it's falls under Cheap Eats (Eat for less than $13 an entree - which isn't really all THAT cheap...)
Side note to Dave H.
Never tried the Chicken Tica - but if it's like Chicken Tikka - I really like whatever it is they serve at the lunch buffet at  Mt. Everest (on Church across from Library) and - ahem (though a small portion indeed) the frozen Chicken Tikka entree from Ethnic Cuisines (available at Whole Foods and Wild Oats - wait until they are on sale to try.)
Pleasant little mid-priced Middle Eastern joint: competent hummous and nice falafel, but the real kicker is an excellent chicken schwarma, striking a perfect balance between tenderness/juiciness and the marvelous crispy burnt end bits. One personal favorite: something called "fatah" which is a hummous-like substance with sumac, crispy toasted pita crutons, lemon juice and some sort of pine-nut type thing. It's excellent, and one order of it is a good sized meal in and of itself or a nice appetizer to split two or three ways.
Gets a bit pricy at dinnertime, but the lunch specials are highly affordable, and even if they've cut back a bit on the portions compared to how the lunch specials were in the Decadent Old Days, it's still a decent deal.
