went here one time, i have to start with the fact i felt really bad for the bartender/server. Â There was one server, who was also the bartender, to the entire bar on a saturday evening about 6pm. Â This person did have about 30 to serve. Â It took about thirty minutes to get our food, which was just burgers and a salad. Â my burger was so overcooked that i could not finish it (so dry). Â I would have gotten some more water to help wash it down, but the lonely server was too busy. Â I ordered the homemade chips with the burger. Â They were so burned they were almost black, so i couldnt finish those either. Â I think the worst part of the meal was the fact I had to gargle for about 10 minutes to get the taste of burned garlic out of my mouth. Â I would not go back here for food ever again.
Review Source:I've been to O'Malley's just to come to O'Malley's, as a second stop after the now closed Stable, and after Wedding receptions. Â It seems to be a favorite stop after the open bars close at those receptions and nothing beats hanging with an already rockin wedding party. Â
The place doesn't try to be anything else but its own corner irish pub. Â They have plenty of stuff on tap and the drinks are pretty cheap. Â Also, Molly the bulldog will keep you entertained as she carries her chew toy and comes to visit to make sure you're having a great night. Â
Since it is so nice outside there are plenty of patio tables around so smokers can be comfortable chilling outside. They feature live music during the weekends as well and I've been present where some people used to have internet radio broadcasts from the location. Â
Definitely not a bad place to start an awesome night or continue an already exciting party or end an awesome celebration.
I had a nice night at O'Malley's. I had never been before, but I wanted to try something new and of course this was on my list of local bars to check out!
I had no idea that the night I went was going to be an open mic night with stand up comedy! It was a nice night to enjoy a bucket of beer and listen to some funny (and some not so funny) jokes. The people here are great, I could tell it was a bar with "regulars" and I didn't feel weird about that at all because I actually felt like I belonged there that night.
I wish I didn't have to work sometimes because I would have loved to stay for the entire show, but anything past midnight is not a good idea. I had to slip out in between acts; maybe next time I go I can stay a little longer.
As I said, the people were great and the open mic was a great surprise! Oh, and of course the drinks were cold and refreshing!
Had another good night at O'Malley's. Â I'm so glad it has become a non-smoking bar. Â By the looks of the extra large bucket full of cig-butts outside the front door, I'm guessing that many of the regular bar patrons are adjusting. Â Being able to take in a few hits of oxygen sure helps make a night of music, Guinness, and banter a lot more enjoyable.
Review Source:Maybe it's a great bar, but the food is terrible. Burnt chips and overpriced frozen food. Â I think the home made chips would have been excellent if they weren't so burnt... and I mean they were burnt. Â Then our server said that the owner was the one back there cooking. Â How could you let those go out of your kitchen? Â Our whole party was disappointed. Â Mixed drinks were also poorly made. We probably won't be going back.
Review Source:I hope people indeed read my update. Â I mentioned before that I had mixed views of this place. Â Well upon receiving a personal message from the owner apologizing I feel like I can over look some flaws. Â No place is perfect and knowing that one place does care enough about it's regular patrons to personally talk with them about flaws is huge in my book. Relaxed bar with cheap drinks...check them out!
Review Source:Great little neighborhood bar. Once you go in a few times, you're a regular. Love the staff and the owners, but especially Tank, the bar mascot (the adorably chunky bulldog that greets you at the door). *This review was written before we lost Tank. :( RIP Tanky! We'll miss you!) Cheap drinks, great music, awesome atmosphere. And there's a separate bar area out back if you want to smoke. Definitely one of my regular spots.
Review Source:I don't write this review for any specific visit. Â I've lived in Benton Park for about two and a half years now and most of that time have visited O'malley's on a regular basis. Â It is hands down my favorite bar to go to for a myriad of reasons.
First off.. Cheap drinks. Â O'malley's drinks cost what it feels like drinks should cost. Â Most places with good night life really charge through the teeth on them, but most of the beers are just $3 without a special. Â Mixed drinks are cheap and generous. Â Long Island Iced Tea for $5, Jaeger/redbulls for $5 (this might have gone up to 6 recently, not 100%).. Those are a couple of my staples that typically run $7-8 at most bars. Â And you get a full glass not the embarrassing ones you get other places. Â I do wish they'd bring back Boulevard on tap, but there's never a lack of things to drink there. Â Basically if you spend more than $50 at O'malley's for a night of drinking you probably drank way too much.
Next.. It's a real Irish Pub. Â I find it bizarre what is considered an Irish Pub in this town. Â I've never been to Ireland, but my vision of an Irish pub is a small hole in the wall with Irish patrons pounding Guinness and singing in unison to Irish fight songs. Â While I think Mcgurk's has an outdoor patio that is unparalleled, it in no way fits this bill. Â The Dubliner is a similar story without the outdoor patio. Â Seamus Mcdaniel may fit the bill, if only because it's located in such an Irish neighborhood. Â O'malley's is a true Irish pub and has the patrons, beer, and tunes to prove it.
Food.. O'malley's isn't going to win any blue ribbons for the food. Â It's a bar first and foremost, but other than peek hours it is also a family place so there is good grub to be had. Â While it's mostly bar food (chicken tenders, burgers, toasted ravs and other apps) it's much better bar food than most of your hole in the wall type bars. Â The chicken tenders in fact I would put up against any in town. Â And if you want some traditional Irish food they offer these as well (Shepherd's Pie and the like).
And last.. Good times. Â Very rare to not have a good time at O'malley's. Â While it's a small place barring showing up on St. Patrick's Day or some other big event it is typically not packed. Â Keeps an almost perfect level of patrons in it most weekend nights where there's enough people for a good atmosphere, but not so many you can't get a seat or order a drink.
If you live in Benton Park you're doing yourself a disservice to not visit O'malley's on a weekend night. Â If you're among the overwhelming majority who don't live in Benton Park, it's still worth an occasional visit with some friends.
Here's why I love O'Malleys, you walk in the door and you get some dude with tats up his neck, full sleeved, the kind of guy you'd expect to see at a Black Flag Concert. They are super cool and friendly. If you come in the middle of the day for a CHEAP lunch - more on this later- they are watching some movie on the TV and debating the the plot (Shark Week is a good time to be in this bar).
If you are dieting, DO NOT COME TO THIS PLACE, even the salad ain't good for you.
But if you want a good quick burger, you're in luck. You can get fries or chips OR fresh made potato chips.
Comedy on Mondays (haven't been yet), Music on Friday and Saturday nights with a musician that will let you sing along if you ask nice enough. Also, they have Big Buck Hunter Safari, my personal favorite of the series.
This place is fun. Â It was very clear as I walked in that almost all of the patrons have been here umpteen times before. Â Everyone singing, drinking and mingling about. Â But they clearly don't shun outsiders. Â As we walked in, a few of the bar patrons rearanged chairs so that the two of us could sit down. Â I didn't even ask. Â It was routine for them. Â
Drinks were stiff and cheap. Â Music was good, not great. Â But I grew fond of it as the night grew by. Â Partly because of the booze. Â Partly because everyone in the bar seemed to be singing along. Â It was like karaoke for stage frightened drunks. Â
On the down side. Â The place does get smokey. Â One of those places that you can smell the stench on your clothes as you get into your car. Â I definately will be back, but maybe not on a crowded Saturday night.
I will start this review by saying I am biased, this is my neighborhood corner bar, as everyone has one in St. Louis. Â However, I don't eat out often, as I would rather spend my money on cold beer and cook at home. Â Today I splurged, at O'Malleys the special is chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables and a starter salad for $7, a wonderful "home cooked" meal decision (almost enough to share) and someone else does the dishes. Â The specials here change daily and are made to order fast. Â If you find yourself in the neighborhood I suggest giving lunch or dinner a try. Â The kitchen is open until 9 M-Sat, the bar until 1:30.
Review Source:This place is a great neighborhood pub. Â Dog friendly, cheap beers and eats, friendly staff and unique extras (like the aforementioned bulldogs and irish sing-alongs).
Food-wise, I usually order the appetizers, which suffice in oiliness and fattiness. Don't ask for more here.
A great place to hang after a show at Off Broadway or after a stroll down the lovely Cherokee street.
So this place feels old, kinda the way any Irish pub should. Â The throaty singer in the corner was decent but the volume was a bit much. Â The bartender came right over and very attentive. Â The beer selection is ok and the food menu is a blend of St Louis favorites ie toasted ravs and Irish traditional fare. Â I was torn between the Shepherd's Pie and the corned beef and cabbage. Â At the recommendation of the bartender due to my appetite level, I went with the corned beef and cabbage. Â It was standard fare. Â Nothing too spectacular but not terrible by any means. Â I'll have to go back to check out the Shepherd's PIe.
Review Source:My firsts at O'Malley's:
1. T-ravs: toasted raviolis. Very Midwestern, indeed. Let's take something normal, and fry the shit out of it. Result: good shit is usually fried. The chicken cesar salad was pretty good too, minus about half of the dressing and it'd have been stellar, I suggest ordering on the side.
2. Boulevard: beer out of KC, who knew? I did not. I liked it. Light and mild, just my style. x2.
3. Smoking (not me, other people, its been a looooooong time since I was at a bar with people lighting up. My eyes burned!) I hate smoking in bars. This one has a lot of it. You've been warned.
I like :)
O'Malley's has that wonderful neighborhood bar feel, but with absolutely friendliness and openness to "outsiders." It doesn't hurt to have a handsome bulldog or two wandering around to break the ice either. Nor blinding the regulars with your brilliance in answering "Cash Cab" questions.
They absolutely pour one of the better pints of Guinness that I've had, so that's always going to win them points.
As noted previously, the food offerings are quality bar fare (fries, onion rings, wings, burgers) and it always comes out fast and hot.
It can get loud and smoky, there's no doubt about that. But generally at that point in the evening, I'm contributing to both aspects, so I cannot complain.
I can't say anything about the food or the drinks, but I can say that "Duchess" is a great bartender and you should give her lots of tips. Â
Also, I have to say that Tommy and his wife are real sweet people and after one smoky visit I can totally understand why people constantly go back to O'Malley's.
Also, Tank is the most precious English Bulldog I've ever seen - and I went to Bully Bash in Chicago! Â He's got the sweetest face and the cutest tail!
O'Malley's doesn't try to be something it's not- it's your typical Irish bar in the city. Their menu consists mostly of appetizers, but you can also get a good burger there. Beer selection is do-able. There's PBR on tap as well as a few ciders. It's smoky, but they like it that way too. And if the smoke bothers you, just sit outside.
I'm not going to lie- sometimes I crave buffalo chicken anything and O'Malley's has some pretty good wings. Â And I've never met a potato that I didn't like, including their skins.
Prices are reasonable and you usually don't have to wait long to get your food. Overall, a nice bar to hang out and order food!
Went here for the first time on a Sat. night about 10pm. Â The place was PACKED and SMOKEY as Hell....but hey, this is an Irish PUB! Â
We found our little pocket in a corner near the bar and settled in to enjoy some awesome Irish songs provided by the incredible Brendan.
Everyone in the entire bar seemed to know all of the words to all of the songs (not an exaggeration) and everyone sang along while swaying back and forth arms around each other holding their Guinness glasses high.
We had soooooooo much fun that this is now my new favorite dive bar.
I'm an instant regular!!!!
Great bar....pretty much everything you could want a good bar.
The food is not spectacular but of average bar quality. Â Mostly, the food consists of standard bar food, mostly deep fried goodness resembling nothing even a little healthy. Â The drinks are well made, and the beer is cheap. Â I can never argue with cheap booze...it always makes the bar experience that much better. Â Also, I am a huge fan of the atmosphere. Â The place is incredibly laid back, from the patrons to the workers, and they always make an effort to keep your drinks filled up. Â
This is just like a neighborhood bar, and everyone who hangs out here generally seems like they have been hanging out here for years. Â It's a nice place and a bar I really enjoy frequenting....
Often, before going to (or playing) a show at the Lemp Neighborhood Arts Center, I'll head to O'Malley's for a could of drinks. Â There have definitely been times that this has been more fun than going to the show. Â The drinks are cheap and it's a laid back, neighborhood pub atmosphere. Â One time, one of my friends was hungry and ordered what he thought was a little sampler platter of appetizers and ended up with gigantic amounts of chicken wings (or something chicken), fries, and onion rings. Â Of course, we all helped him devour these things, for myself, the onion rings and friend. Â Your average bar food, but tasty. Â
The best thing might be chance of seeing the owner's bulldog sauntering around. Â As every bookstore should have a cat, every pub should have a stout and friendly bulldog.
When you want to hang, pub-like, O'Malley's can't be beat. Â From the friendly faces of Bailey or Tank, to the wit of Tommy, you'll enjoy the place with a good guinness. Â Throw in a dart game or two and you're on to a great time with friends and neighbors. Â No pretense, no rap, just good people, drink and fun.
Review Source:O'Malley's Irish Pub is a nice little place to grab a drink. Located in the antique district on Cherokee, I popped into O'Malley's one day just on a whim. After having an afternoon drink, I thought to myself, "Hey, this place is pretty good." Well, I was right, as I always am I believe. Anyways, not to sound cocky, I brought my friends there one night and they soon agreed with me. This place was like a smaller version of McGurk's.
O'Malley's is a nice intimate bar where you can gather with friends and have nice long engaging conversations about many deep and wonderful things. Of course if you are not having a terrific talk with someone, then can always enjoy the live music that they have. When I was there someone was covering Oasis, which basically made my day since I consider them on the high levels of awesomeness.
O'Malley's is a great place to go for a night out with friends if you are looking for a place to enjoy a nice drink and a genuinely terrific atmosphere.
BEST GUINNESS IN TOWN!
I am a Guinness snob. The best I ever had was at the Gravity Bar at Guinness Factory in Dublin. This place has the second best.
But if you're not interested in Guinness, the other beers on tap are also usually quite fresh. The only food I've had at O'Malley's is their pita chips, which are good beerfood.
My friends and I love this place because it's usually not too crowded. It's a great place to sit down and actually be able to listen to each other. There's a couple of dart boards and arcade machines. Our favorite is the jukebox which is packed with bunch of Irish Music and a few guilty pleasures (like Meatloaf).
The owner Tommy is usually around, and sometimes his gigantic fat bulldog can be seen romping around inside. If you yell "who let the dogs out?" at him, he will bark the barks. I don't do that, but I've seen other people do it.
If you're looking for a laid back atmosphere to sit down and have some yummy Guinness, O'Malley's is the spot.
