Nostalgia and cheap prices for standard Cantonese fare. That's what you get here. To appreciate the 1920s decor (still in good to shabby condition) and Art Deco exterior, you really need to come here in person. So, of course, we dined in. Pretty good egg rolls. From other reviews, it looks like delivered carry-out can be chancy.

Orange Garden is my go-to for Chinese, and I was ecstatic when they started delivering.  Now I can have my egg rolls in the comfort of my own home.  I have been coming here for years, and it has been consistently great.  The old-school dine-in atmosphere is cool and the waiters have been there forever and feel like old friends.  You can sit for hours and no one will bother you to order more or leave.  The food is perfection.  I've ordered most things on the chicken and beef menus, and I particularly like the kung pao and general tso's chicken, and the lo mein.  The egg rolls are golden crispy bits of heaven.  The prices have remained consistently reasonable over the years, and since they now deliver, I see no reason to ever switch.

The owner is always delighted to see us, especially because he praises me for having three boys. Aside from that the staff is very friendly and accomdating when we ask for food with changes. The decor is pleasant...nothing over the top but you can tell that this location has not changed since it was first built. We enjoy the food, always the usual...Kung Pao chicken, Combination Fried Rice, Shrimp Lo Mein with Cantonese Pan Fried Noodles......YUUUUUUUUUUM!!!!!! We really enjoy their complimentary green tea.

I am not one to generally complain, but i have seen a drop in our neighborhood delivery services and Orange Garden is one of the culprits. I am also not one to trash neighborhood businesses but they need to listen to their consumers.  My wife and I ordered the kung pow chicken and orange beef extra extra extra spicy.  But they consistently deliver my food normal temp and with none of the alterations that we asked for, this seems be a problem with the host relaying orders to the kitchen.  This is the 3rd time our orders have not been delivered correctly, so i called in to complain.

When I called in and gave my address, I asked her to read me the order we gave her on the ticket.  She read back the order to me incorrectly and with none of the specialties we asked for.  I told her i did not want to yell at her but being a long time customer i found this disappointing. She did not seem to care and told me that the cooks must not have read the ticket.  I told her we would no longer be ordering from their establishment.

It seems a lot of our neighborhood businesses are struggling and that struggle is not turning into better service for its customers or even a pride in the products they are putting out.  That is something that has been made clear to me about this particular  establishment.

I will no longer be eating here or ordering delivery from them, they have no loyalty the the customer or care if the order is correct. THIS NEEDS TO STOP OR THEY NEED TO GO OUT OF BUSINESS....

    Sincerely,

    A Past Customer.

My husband and I decided to have lunch and ate here. The place was nice inside, but the food was not the greatest. I was very disappointed. We ordered Orange Chicken which was crunchy (hard) and the low mein was not tasty. We also had crab ragoon which tasted burnt over cooked and the fried rice was soaked with soy sauce. I do not recommend this place.

Since I moved to Chicago a few short months ago, I've been looking for a reliable joint to get sate my occasional Chinese food craving. This place is not as bad as others that I've tried in the Uptown area. I'm not writing this one off the list, but it didn't knock my socks off--the search continues!

The food is great especially their Egg Drop Soup!  I would not do delivery that is very expensive unless you don't mind paying a $5 delivery fee.  Other than that they have very good fried rice, Mongolian Beef, Great egg rolls etc.  Very old school inside the restaurant.  I love Chinese food this is great for kids too.

This place is okay for your standard dirty wok joint.

I have had the general tsao chicken and mongolian beef.

The general is different than normal, the chicken is cut very thin and fried to an almost crispy state...different yes but it is not bad.

Mongolian is just standard no frills stuff.

The individual portions are more than enough food and the price is right.

A decent option for a meal in a pinch and the carry out is very fast.

I love Chinese food and I am pretty picky when it comes to what I consider good Chinese food but I bet no matter what your personal Chinese food likes are you will love Orange Garden.

Great old school atmosphere at one of the oldest Chinese restaurants in Chicago with  friendly servers that will help you with any questions about the menu. I have been many times and  they remember me each time I return give you that nice cheers happy feeling.

Great egg rolls with home made sauce not the packaged crap most places serve you. You can also get half app orders for some apps which is nice if you want to mix it up.

This last visit has Shrimp and Lobster sauce.. so tasty fresh with perfectly cooked shrimp I am not a huge  shrimp fan but these where great!! Also had Szchuan beef  perfect spicy tender beef crisp veggies and crunchy peanuts very very good. Last we had Chicken Lo Mein a noodle dish with all white meat chicken slices crispy celery mixed with noodles.  All the portions are big  but you might not have left overs because the food is so good.  The menu has a big selection with a good variety of Chinese food styles of cooking. This is a great place with a charming old school decor you won't want to miss.

I would have given it 4 stars 2 years ago but this place has GONE WAY DOWN HILL.

last year I asked for a five piece potstickers and they charged me for five orders, but the food was there and I was hungry so I told the lady to just take it off my next order. I let that go but when I told them about this 2 months later they said they didn't remember that haha..wow ok.

I order from orange garden this year for delivery.  The f#$#% delivery guy has the balls to complain to me about his 20 percent tip I gave him (the old asian guy with glasses!   I called the RESTAURANT to report this and you know what they did for there "loyal customer" NOTHING AT ALL.  I told them Im gonna post this on yelp if they didnt give me some kind of reinbursement so here I am.  If it was my restaurant I would have given them a free 20 dollar order so they wouldn't post something like this on YELP

Recently:  Family went inside orange garden,  Ordered orange chicken and they charred it.It tasted like burnt toast. First time this has happened in my life! She wouldn't even admit that it was burned but they did bring another one so I gave them the extra star.

U want great asian food with really low prices go pick it up at Lee's by Western and Lincoln meet. youll be shocked how great and cheap asian food can be

Was too kind with the two stars. Have had it for lunch a couple of times and it is really not good in any way, shape or form. Just bad Chinese-American food. Hot and sour soup was awful!

This is my favorite Chinese restaurant in Chicago. It's one of my favorite restaurants in Chicago, Chinese or otherwise. The food is not swimming in sugary sauces, which is the cardinal and most committed sin related takeout Chinese food, in my opinion. The servers are extremely kind and always remember my wife and me. I love the old school atmosphere of the building and interior. More importantly, I love the food. It's better than anywhere else in the neighborhood doing Chinese food, and frankly, I prefer it over the places I have been to in Chinatown in Chicago and in many other cities around the country. If you live in the neighborhood, this ought to be your Chinese food spot. If you don't, it's worth the trip.

The food is great! The fried rice is delicious but the lo mein is a little dry and not that amazing.  The lemon chicken and the bbq pork app is super good.  It is heavier food so you only need a little to be full and the portions are big.

I actually enjoy this place. My boyfriend and I came across Orange Garden via GrubHub, a few months ago, and now this is all we get when in the city. I am a big fan of their food, and not really sure why customers have reviewed so poorly. The only reason I gave 4 starts and not 5, is that they are not consistent with how they package and deliver their food.

I was craving Chinese food and we thought we would try a new place.  We ordered a lot of different things - crab Rangoon which was pretty good, sesame beef which was okay and a little dry, general Tao beef which was also a little dry, BBQ pork chop suey which was good and Beef egg Foo young which was good.  The prices were reasonable. All of the above was about $35.  I am glad we tried this place, but I won't be eating there again any time soon.  There are far too many places that are better.

Should have given the other reviews credibility... I figured most of the low ratings were due to pretentious douche bags who obviously don't know a hole-in-the-wall gem when they see it. But alas... I was wrong.

The dishes (egg drop soup, egg roll, mongolian combo, and sizzling war bar) were flavorless and watery. I dislike soy sauce and never use it... except for here. My war bar was absolutely gross. The fish was watery, flavorless, and spongy as if not cooked. Also, who gives customers mustard for their egg roll? Weird.

It's unfortunate because the building/decor was cool and the staff was über-friendly but overall, it was a WASTE of $40.00. I felt really bad that we used our hard-earned cash on this restaurant. And basically, my fiance did not order the mongolian combo like he thought, oh no, he ordered the "I'll have diarrhea-for-two-days special."

We ate there twice last year and thought the food was good.  But, ate their twice already in the last 2 months and was not impressed at all.  In fact, we had a take out Saturday nite and the fried rice was so greasy we had to throw it away and the egg foo yung was greasy too. The quality of the food was very disappointing.   And it doesnt stop there.  I started to have stomach aches immediately and then migraines along with heart papitations.  Forgot they use MSG, and there must have been a lot to make me so sick for not only the rest of Saturday but even into Sunday morning/afternoon.

Dont waste your time or money......

Two stars says "meh" and that's me.

Many moons ago I lived up the street from Orange Garden, and I wasn't a fan. Standard Chimerican at best. Nowhere near as cool as the design would lead you to believe.

But the other night I was in the mood for some Chinese, and wanted to try something new, so I figured I'd give OG a chance. Big mistake. The food tasted like ... nothing. Moo shu pork was so over-cooked -- or sat so long on a steam table -- that the cabbage had no texture. The pancakes were "wafer thin," and bled through half way through consuming. The only flavor came from the hoisin sauce. The chow fun noodles were gummy, which I admit can be a problem with delivery, but these were really bad. And again, pretty flavorless. The combination appetizer was generous, but uninspired.

Looking at some of the other reviews, it seems I ordered the wrong things. Forgive me if I think I should be able to order *anything* on the menu and be satisfied.

There's an old Woody Allen line about two old women complaining about the food in a restaurant. The first says, "The food here is terrible" and the other replies, "Yes, and such small portions." At Orange Garden, at least the portions aren't small.

I'm not sure what to think of you yelpers that gave poor ratings.....this place is the bomb!  Take out seemed to be a gripe, looked like it was flowing when we were there, but go eat here!
BYOB, awesome, nice prices on the apps.

Sampler patter $8.95 you get....drumroll.....fried heaven!!  2 eggrolls, 4 crab rangoon, 2 potsticker like things, 4 fried butterfly shrimp...sooo good!

Lo Mein: skinny noodles, not traditional fat, but sooo good
Sesame Chicken: well done, very good!

Maybe I'm missing something compared to some other users, or maybe this is authentic and I've just never had "real Chinese," but this was probably one of the worse Chinese food experiences I've ever had.

After moving to the North Center neighborhood from Lincoln Park, my family and the friends who'd helped us moved were starving. We ordered online [I can't remember what website it was, but it wasn't grubhub] and my husband went to go pick it up.

We ordered a variety of dishes and sides, but everything looked EXACTLY THE SAME. My tofu in garlic sauce looked just like my friend's general tso, which looked just like my husband's beef. Everything was drowned in a mysterious grey sauce, and it tasted like salt. It was like whoever was in the kitchen mixed together a buttload of soy sauce, MSG, and corn starch, and then threw our ingredients into it.

Everything also tasted the same: salty rubber.

To top it all off, it was expensive. I asked for a garlic chicken with tofu, and they gave me chicken AND tofu, and proceeded to charge me an additional six bucks for it.

I seriously doubt we will bother to give this place a second chance.

Ordered from grubhub and apparently they couldn't find which apartment I was in - although no one else has ever had that problem before, but they did contact me twice in order to figure it out so I'll throw them a bone for that. Thank you for making the effort to get my food to me in a timely manner.

Unfortunately, that is where the compliments must end. The food was just not good. For one thing, I have never ever seen sweet and sour chicken look quite like this. It was giant chicken strips coated in so much breading, I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't any chicken in there at all and then the sauce was in a separate bowl and this sauce did not consist of any peppers, onions, or pineapple of any sort. Very unappealing. The other three dishes we had were just so unimpressive, I struggle to even remember what they were....sadly most of it ended up in the trash.

I ordered from here since my normal Chinese place is closed on Sunday. NEVER AGAIN!
I had general Tso's asked for it to be extra spicy but i Think they added more sugar not spice. It Came with rice that was wet and all stuck together. They added too much water and over cooked it. Side of broccoli had some kind of white sauce on it that was not expected nor was it listed in the items description. The Crab Rangoon was the best part of the meal I wish I would have got the large.

This place reminds me of the Americanized Chinese restaurants I used to go with my folks in the suburbs. It's not bad, in fact it is pretty alright. They like the sauces here and they fry the heck outta stuff. So saucy and fried is a combination that I can get behind. They have the usual stuff nothing to out of the ordinary. Decent Hot and Sour soup. Egg rolls, pot stickers, and crab Rangoon are all spot on. Noodles are decent, and like I said the fried stuff is good. A good spot to bring a bunch of people for some family style dinner.
The service is friendly and the atmosphere is very old school and cool. I don't think they have changed a thing since they opened. So for some A-Okay food and an atmosphere you will enjoy. Come on by.

Ordered today from grubhub, but never again.  service gets it two stars, the food gets it none.

General tso's chicken: the litmus test of any americanized chinese restaurant.  you would think that they have it down to a science, but no.  there is more breading than meat.  unacceptable.

Ribs: very tough, not very much meat at all.  6 ribs in total.

Kung Pao combination:  very little meat again, mostly vegetables and peanuts.  Chicken pieces were tiny, beef pieces had a gel consistency.

So this one will be quick. I work down the street. The other day I had a lunch emergency because the tortilla chips I had brought to make nachos were super stale. So I asked my co-workers and they suggested Orange Garden.

God bless them. This was the best Chinese food I've had in a long, long time. I know I raved about Wing Hoe, but Wing Hoe has been dethroned. Let it be known though, I tried Sesame Chicken here for the first time. It's possible that Wing Hoe's sesame chicken is as good or better. We shall see.

I'm just saying though, holy Jesus, this sesame chicken was good. Why aren't you eating there right now? Oh, they aren't open. Well, you should probably make your way over so you can be there when they unlock the door.

The older I get, the more I long for the things of my past. Ogden Nash once said "Progress might have been alright once, but it has gone on too long". I know how he felt.

Orange Garden brings to mind so many good memories from my youth. The great old Chinese restaurants like Jimmy Wong's and Hoe Kow are now part of history. A bit of the old days live on in this relic from a bygone era.

The decor is delightful. It is a throw back to a time when the word "fusion" referred to nuclear technology and not cuisine. I agree with the reviewer who said it reminded them of the Chinese restaurant in A Christmas Story. Yes it is old and has lost some luster, but it filled me with joy and nostalgia.

I wish I could say that the food lived up to my memories as well. I met a friend there and had a chance to sample several items. The egg rolls were ok, the pot stickers pretty good, the Mongolian beef was the best thing i tried. The garlic chicken was rather bland. All in all, the food was ok, but not great. If the food was better, I would give Orange Garden 5 stars and spend my retirement funds living in the past.

Even though the food doesn't thrill, I'll be back to relive my childhood.

    In a word, no.

I have friends that love this place. My mom loves this place. Me, not so much.

I've gone here twice and maybe I should give it another chance, but I just don't think my stomach can handle it. We ordered different items this time than we did the first time thinking we just ordered the wrong dishes.
As it turned out they were all wrong dishes apparently. We started with crab rangoon, it was passable. Fried rice was literally black, like it was made with entirely too much soy sauce, yet strangely had no flavor. The tenderloin with peapods was a misnomer. I think it was tendons with peapods. Inedible. Sesame chicken fared somewhat, but not much better. The few bites I had were all breading and no chicken, but the others seemed to enjoy it. Service was adequate although it took 25 minutes to get the check and close out and there were only 4 other tables on a Friday night.

Never going back again. If I want to eat mediocre chinese food in a dining room that hasn't been updated since the '60s, I'll stick with Wing Hoe.

It's ok, standard Americanized Chinese food.  Nothing spectacular.

We finished up pub trivia next door at The Globe and wanted take out on our way home.  It was exactly 10, their closing time, but decided to pop in to see if they could help us.  It was empty, but a guy came out to help us.  He said two of the cooks had gone home, but that the guy responsible for apps was still around.

We ordered an assortment of apps and in 10 minutes we were on our way home with hot Chinese food.  So super nice that they did this...they could have just as easily sent us away.

The potstickers were tasty, but the dough was a little thick.  The eggrolls were ok.  The ribs and bbq pork were good.  The crab rangoon was really good.

I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here, but if it's in your 'hood and you get a craving this place will fulfill it in a pinch.

This place is my temple of chinese. My Grand parents use to take me there when I was little. I love that it is still the same owners and you see the kids my age working their now who I use to color with  at the back table by the kitchen.

I always come back home for great food here. even if I try  a new place they just dont cut it. I love the egg rolls the fried rice, beef and broccoli garlic lobster sauce, I could go on and on.
But now I want some ..............

I love Orange Garden. I'd give it 5 stars, but both times I've been, the people I was with both hated it, so I feel like maybe I've been lucky. It is a bit pricey for Chinese food, but I liked the older decor and service was very attentive and nice.

I had the orange chicken and liked it a lot and also the hot and sour soup. I tried a bit of my boyfriend's lo mein and while I liked it, he definitely did not. I can't blame him because it really wasn't like any lomein I've ever seen, so it wasn't technically what he thought he was ordering. The noodles were thin, ramen-type noodles and the taste was not really soy-based like most traditional lomein dishes. Still, I've really liked everything I've tried, so I'll be back if I can find someone to go with me...

After a bad Chinese experience at a different restaurant recently, I figured I would review this place.

This place is really really good.  The best I've had in Chicago (although, admittedly, I haven't tried a lot and usually end up coming here cuz I know it's good).

My ex took me here and we have gone several times for lunch.  Their lunch special is amazing with soup, and egg roll and your meal (they will also give you other things for the lunch special that aren't on the menu).

The veggie Lo Mein is basic (think Panda Express), but I always order it for leftovers.  I also really like the Shrimp with Veggies (although I think it has a special name).  They are generous with the Shrimp, and it's the big ones, not tiny ones.  It also is nice because it has just a bit of a kick to it.  The ex would always get the Pineapple Chicken and loved it.  The portions are HUGE and often when we would dine in, I would see people sitting by themselves (this is totally a place you feel comfortable doing that).  The service is usually pretty good, and very quick.

Minus one star for not delivering (but they seem to do a big take out business).

The food is really, really good.  It might be my favourite Chinese place in the city (that I've been to).  However, their delivery radius is like four blocks.  I dare say, it might be the smallest delivery radius I've ever encountered!  Since I've moved out of that area, I now can no longer enjoy their food, as I feel Chinese food is best enjoyed via delivery and in your own home.

The egg rolls are crispy and flavorful - I have yet to find any that compare.  I have had chicken and beef dishes and have enjoyed those as well.  Prices are very reasonable, and portions are usually enough for multiple meals.

I have eaten in before, and I will agree with the description - it's cool.  Some places that have not been updated just look tired and run down.  Others have character.  Orange Garden is definitely the latter.

I broke up with Orange Garden last night and I'm still a little upset about it.

We have had a long and tumultuous love affair that began when I was seduced by the beautiful vintage exterior.  Inside I discovered the classic Bad Chinese food that I grew up eating that I still get wicked cravings for from time to time.  Call it Pre-war Chinese, Jewish Chinese or Chop Suey House Chinese, it all amounts to the same thing: little greasy, totally inauthentic Chinese food that I absolutely love.

Orange Garden isn't best of class, but it is very good and was previous to last night my favorite in Chicago.  It's one major flaw though has always been it's service, which is very, very slow.

Last night though, it reached new levels of bad when we waited for a half hour without water or so much as eye contact with our waiter.  We did however witness him clearing other tables, re-setting the tables, collecting tips and disappearing into the kitchen for long stretches.  Finally, we had enough when after waiting 30 minutes without any contact, he took the order of a table that had only just arrived while continuing to ignore us.  I can't remember the last time I walked out of a before last night.

I don't care how good your egg rolls or pork lo mein are Orange Garden, you can't treat me like that.  It hurts me to say it, but we are through.  I know I've said it before, but I mean it this time.  We're done.

I have only had take out from Orange Garden, so this review is solely based on that.

I had wanted to try this place ever since driving by one day and thinking "damn, that exterior is killer."  But of course, as anyone will tell you, never judge a book by its cover!

The cuisine Orange Garden offers is Pre-War Chinese.  Don't know what that means?  Ask anyone who was alive in the 1930's.  This was when Chinese-style food was gaining popularity in the States and any authenticity was completely destroyed by amateur chefs.  Chop Suey and Chow Mein ruled the scene and most people who were introduced to this food are still pretty passionate about it.  But it has little resemblance to actual Chinese cuisine.

I ordered an egg roll, crab Rangoon, and Mongolian Beef, which was touted as a "spicy" dish.  The crab Rangoon was a joke - there was maybe a 1/2 teaspoon of filling in a huge wrapper with absolutely no crab whatsoever.  The egg roll was decent, but it as well as the crab Rangoon both had a terrible aroma of old oil which completely detracted from any enjoyment of them.  The Mongolian Beef was beef strips, green pepper and green onion bathed in a thick, gummy brown sauce.  The "spice", if any, was undetectable.

This place is great for people like my BF's 86-year old father, who will eat plate after plate of Chop Suey when he otherwise would just pick at other food, or people that don't care what they are eating and just want something in their stomach.  Either way, the coolness factor of the outside of Orange Garden sadly does not translate to the offerings inside.

I really wished I enjoyed the food at Orange Garden but if I'm being honest....it sucked a big one. Egg rolls....have a funny taste to them and I have never had worst Mongolian Beef...oh wait yes I have, okay this is the second worst Mongolian Beef I have ever had.

The restaurant itself is so cute and the staff is so friendly and attentive that it made me sad that the food sucked so bad because I knew that I wouldn't be back.

Really - for what it is, this is an amazing restaurant.  And what is that?  A classic, "American" Chinese Chop Suey house.  You couldn't most of these dishes in China, and really, would you want to?  This is the chinese restaurant that most midwesterners grew up on - Sweet & Sour Chicken, with the "dinner special" giving you an enormous fried Egg Roll and bowl of Egg Drop Soup.

Go forth, and be transported back to the days of the Red Curtain - where Chinese food meant "American" Chinese food served by immigrants whose families had lived in the states for 150 years.  It's a trip back to the 50s and 60s, and the food is just as good as you remember it.

    Smart business, good food.

They don't take checks or credit cards, they don't deliver and they don't hire anyone, using family instead. Overhead has to be nonexistent at Orange Garden.

The only thing I can really recommend are their egg rolls but man oh man do I recommend them. Not since Pekin House on Devon in its heyday have I had better egg rolls. I'm in the peanut butter camp and these things are rich and delicious, especially slathered in their slightly tangy, slightly spicy sweet and sour sauce. Say that 10 times fast.

Definitely worth the trip but bring cash!
